Date of Scene: 06 April 2020
Location: Bryant Park
Synopsis: Alanna and Mustang meet at an arts & crafts fair and talk books and families.
Cast of Characters: Alanna Lyons, Mustang Hawthorne

Alanna Lyons has posed:
Every couple of weekends, Bryant Park is home to a small arts and craft fair. Blankets and some booths are spread out across the large expanse of grass and some of the nearby pavement. People from all walks of life have their wares displayed: from multicolored glass baubles, woven blankets, shiny pieces of silver jewelry and other items one might want.

Currently, Alanna Lyons has placed herself at a booth where there are collections of different books with intricately carved covers in designs related to each of them. The one she's examining is a copy of Alice in Wonderland, a white rabbit expertly etched onto the front looking down a hole.

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
The sound of skateboard wheels on pavement can be heard a moment or two before Mustang comes cruising into view. He glances about the park and the fair within it curiously. He's dressed in tight jeans and Converse, along with a faded Nirvana shirt. He slows on the skateboard when he accidentally bumps into someone, and he veers around them...

Which puts Alanna in his sights instead. He manages to kick his board up and stop suddenly, ending only inches from her. "Whoa! Sorry!"

Alanna Lyons has posed:
Thankfully, Alanna has a good grip on the book and avoids dropping it. "Oh! Hey, you okay?" Nevermind that he was the one on the skateboard, she has to check in anyway. Her eyes make a sweeping motion over him before she's sure the sudden stop hasn't actually harmed him in some way.

"Bound to be pretty hard to skate over here, lot of people about today. Sorry if we're in the way of your regular haunt or something."

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
He looks alright. No injuries or anything! He kicks the skateboard up into his hand and tucks it under his arm. "Yeah, I think I'll walk the rest of the way," he says with a soft chuckle. The young man has a deep, pleasant voice with a bit of a Gotham accent.

He glances down at the book she's holding before curiously glancing past her at the booth.

Alanna Lyons has posed:
Alanna looks at the book, then in his direction. "These are pretty neat. They're all just these intricate covers for books. This one reminds me of someone I met once, so I thought I might just get it. Funny what gets stuck in our head as an association with a person."

She glances over at him. "You have a favorite book?"

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
He grins softly and considers that for a few moments. "Huh. I don't know." He brushes his fingers back through his hair before he reaches out to pick one of them up. "I have a soft spot for Treasure Island," Mustang admits. "But I've read On The Road about twenty times," he admits with a small chuckle. "WHat about you?"

Alanna Lyons has posed:
"Well, Alice here reminds me of someone," Alanna notes, but she searches through the covers carefully. "Little Women, though, is my favorite. It's kind of a guilty pleasure... you'd think you'd get tired of reading a coming of age story over and over, but there's really so many good characters that I always find something new."

She lifts up a book to examine the cover, smiling at it a bit. "Been thinking a lot about books lately."

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
"Oh, Alcott. Totally. Great book." Some skater kid knows who Louisa May Alcott is? He brushes tattooed fingers over his chin and clears his throat before he glances down at the books again. He finds one resembling Treasure Island and turns it over in his hand, considering it.

Alanna Lyons has posed:
Alanna already seems impressed. Never judge a skater book by its cover. She gives a nod in his direction. "If you want it, I'll cover it. Hard for me to pass up seeing literary appreciation get rewarded." She notes, already fishing for her purse so she can buy the Alice copy.

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
He blinks at the offer and furrows his brow a bit. He considers it for a moment before he shrugs a shoulder. He offers a hand to her. "Hell, sure. How can I turn that down? I'm Mustang, by the way. You a local? I'm not. Just visiting at the moment."

Alanna Lyons has posed:
"I'm Alanna," she says, offering her hand as well. Shortly after, she's fishing out the money for the two books and passing it over to the retailer. "Yeah, I'm local. New York's my haunt, I guess you could say. I don't get out of it as much as I'd like to. Work keeps me busy."

She nods in his direction and offers him the newly purchased book. "And now you have a souvenir for your visit."

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
He shakes her hand before he steps aside so she can buy the books. "Gotcha. I'm from Gotham, but I'm living out at Happy Harbor now. Came into the city to hang out before having to head back tonight." Mustang shrugs a shoulder before he grins and reaches out to take the offered book. "Very cool of you."

Alanna Lyons has posed:
"Well, like I said, I like to see people appreciating books. Especially people who clearly have other hobbies. Multitalented, I see." Alanna gives him a small nod. "Yeah, I've heard of Happy Harbor. Seems to be a decent school, I've seen a few kids from there hang out around here."

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
Mustang Hawthorne chuckles. "I guess so. I mean, I suck at most school subjects, but I like to read." He arches an eyebrow at that and glances about the fair. "I'm actually new there. I haven't really had the chance to meet anyone yet. I'm hoping it doesn't suck. Public school in the Narrows in Gotham was...well, it was an experience..."

Alanna Lyons has posed:
Alanna laughs. "Yeah, I can imagine. High school wasn't too bad for me, but that's cause I've got a big family. Everywhere you looked I had a cousin and we all looked out for each other. Wasn't easy, but it meant no one physically pushed me around... and if they did, they didn't do it twice."

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
He grins at that and nods. "Not much of a family. Well, I have a new foster family with two girls in it, so I...guess I kind of have sisters now. Depends on how you look at it, I guess." He shrugs. "They don't suck too bad, yet, but we'll see. I've never had a good luck with families."

Alanna Lyons has posed:
"Just between me and you? Having a family is overrated." Alanna says with a grin. "You're better off gathering a bunch of friends to be there with you for the rest of your life. The key thing is, family we don't get to choose. It's luck of the draw. Friends? You get to pick. You get to decide who stays and who goes and who is worth it."

She taps her book with a fingertip. "That being said, it's usually good for your general health and well-being to at least get along with your family on a cordial level."

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
He chuckles softly and nods to that. "Well, that ship sailed with my biological parents, but...I'll remember that for the new one." He glances down at the book again before he slings off his backpack and tucks it into it. "And, I dunno...never had much luck with friends, either. Maybe the new start will help but..." He shakes his head, as if Mustang doesn't think it's likely.

Alanna Lyons has posed:
"You still didn't get to pick the family you have now, did you? Same concept." Alanna offers a smile all the same. "New start, new friends. Sometimes it works out with people not really knowing you. No judgment. Just go in with an open mind. You seem nice enough, don't see why they wouldn't all get along with you."

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
He shakes his head at that. "Eh." That is Mustang's response about him seeming nice enough. He glances down at his skateboard and then around the fair again. "So, uh...this thing happens a lot?," he asks, as if eager to chance the course of conversation.

Alanna Lyons has posed:
Alanna doesn't seem to mind the change in the course of conversation. Especially since it's pretty obvious he was ready to /not/ be talking about making friends. "Every couple of weeks. New York has got some really great live events and stuff if you ever drop by on a weekend or after school or something. It'd be nice to see more people attending them."

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
Mustang Hawthorne nods to that. "Gotham has stuff like that sometimes, but..." He shakes his head. "You really need to be in the right neighborhoods for them, you know? I didn't have anything like that in mine, but I went to some of the others a few times growing up to go to the circus, or...a few small local fairs."

Alanna Lyons has posed:
"You can bring them to some different neighborhoods if you know who to talk to in order to arrange it. Cities are full of politics, and I'm not talking about the politicians. People on the street know who to talk to in order to get things done." Alanna gives a small nod. "So you get the right people interested in your little fair and you've got it wherever you want it."

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
"Hm. I guess so." He shrugs again and brushes his tattooed fingers back through his dark hair before he wanders down to the next vendor. He glances back towards Alanna and watches her curiously. "So, uh...what do you do?," he asks, clearly just looking for more things to talk about.

Alanna Lyons has posed:
Alanna moves on to another vendor, glancing back over at him. "Kind of complicated position to explain, but I do a lot of organizing and managing things at the company my family runs. Family business so it's more like I just do a bit of everything. Nothing gets done right if I don't do it."

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
Mustang Hawthorne chuckles and nods to that. "Got it." He moves to follow her over to the other vendor, though he pauses as his cellphone beeps. He fishes it out and glances at it, grumbling. "I should get back to Happy Harbor. School in the morning, you know? First day."

Alanna Lyons has posed:
Alanna gives him a nod. "Well, get on back then. Don't let me be a bad influence on you." She grins. "Enjoy the book, alright?" She looks at her own book for a moment. "Literacy is important."

Mustang Hawthorne has posed:
Mustang Hawthorne grins to that and nods. "It is. Alright, take it easy." He then turns and makes his way out of the fair. Once he's a good distance from people, he drops his board and hops onto it, cruising off.
