Date of Scene: 12 March 2022
Location: Hell's Gate
Synopsis: Phoebe and Kara meet up for a brief rooftop chat
Cast of Characters: Phoebe Beacon, Kara Danvers

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Hell's Gate. Hell's Kitchen. Hell's Knees. For some reason Phoebe always felt comfortable in the places with the downtrodden. That should probably be cause for concern.

But, she had a Weird Encounter earlier today, and need to find some place Thin to think. Sometimes the ideas just came easier, and you find thin places easier where there's been a lot of misery.

That should also be cause for concern.

So she was sitting, with a paper bag full of fried junkfood and a pair of cardboard cups with soda-pop that was horrible for you, on top of a ratty building, surrounded by a protective circle, etched in white spraypaint.

Kara's phone would probably buzz <Hey! In the area.>

Kara Danvers has posed:
It doesn't take that long at all once Phoebe sends the message. Somewhere out there, Kara not only receives it but zeroes in on the familiar set of biological rhythms that belong to her friend. There's the sound of rushing wind, a blur of red and blue, and then she's sitting there alongside Phoebe on the roof.

"Hello! Oooo, soda. I love soda."

She reaches to take one of the cups, holding it up and sipping deeply through the straw.

"Mmm."

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Grape soda, in fact, The sickeningly sweet might-be-too-much-syrup from an older place down below somewheres.

"Help yourself." Phoebe comments to Kara, giving a wave from where she's reclined on the circle. "Just needed to take a bit of a walk and clear my head. Hope you don't mind me showing up out of the blue... I... don't know how you an' your cousin deal with outsiders in your city."

Kara Danvers has posed:
"I do not think there are rules," Kara admits, touching a finger to her chin and looking thoughtful for a moment, "I suppose anyone is welcome. After all, Kal and I are both outsiders ... neither of us is from Metropolis originally. It would seem wrong to force people out."

She leans to one side, momentarily resting her head on Phoebe's shoulder as she takes a sip of her grape soda.

"Besides! You are so helpful! Why would we not want you to visit?"

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Phoebe tenses a moment as Kara leans her head on her shoulder, but she relaxes, with a breath out, and she leans her head over Kara's.

"Keep in mind where I'm from. Batman was so concerned with me on patrol that he adopted me." she offers as a joke, and gives a slight smile. "You and your cousin are Metropolis Superheroes through and through. Pretty much this whole city feels cleaner than Gotham. More wholesome. It's like... a graham cracker." she ventures, and she gives a wry grin "Gotham's a three-week-old deep-fried fishstick compared to this place."

Kara Danvers has posed:
"I do not think there are plans to adopt you," Kara answers, sitting back upright to look at Phoebe, "You could be Phoeb-El ... hmmm, perhaps not, it sounds too much like the word 'feeble.' Hmmph, I have to admit I am getting tired of English. I am told I do not use contractions, and it makes me sound like a robot. Which is ridiculous, because robots can sound however you want them to sound.

She offers a broad, shining smile at Phoebe.

"I have to admit, I find Gotham ... smells."

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Phoebe gives a small laugh. "I don't think Batman would want to give me up until I'm a constructive and complete member of society. That and having the whole dark knight thing kinda fits me, you know?" she gives a wry grin to the blonde, and she breathes out. "It's already weird enough to think of myself sharing a last name with him. And yeah, take it from someone who speaks like, six languages at this point -- English is *confusing as heck*. It's three languages stacked on top of one another that chases you down alleys for spare syntax."

Kara Danvers has posed:
"I should teach you Kryptonian," Kara offers, "Though there would not be many people to speak to. Kal speaks it, but he learned it from a book and it is ... very stuffy. It feels like talking to one of the machines that used to do laundry on Kandor. Do not tell him I said this!"

Kara takes another sip of her soda, clasping the cup in both hands and resting it in her lap.

"I will work out contractions eventually."

She pauses and makes a focused face.

"Don't ... y'all ... worry ... 'bout ... it."

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
"I'd be happy to learn it. Most of the languages I picked up are... ah... magic... related. For instance --" Phoebe holds out her hand -- away from Kara! -- and she pulls back the spiderweb-and-spider-token bracelet she was wearing and whispers in Latin "Subleco, circulus ligandi"

-- and the spelled circle on her wrist glimmers white-hot in the night, lighting up the area, and also the circle below them. It is warm and protective.

"You'll get it, Kars. But hearing you say 'y'all' is a bit weird." she gives a smile, leaning her head back against Kara's.

Kara Danvers has posed:
"A circle of binding," Kara repeats in English, looking around thoughtfully, "I understand a little bit of Latin. Spanish, Mandarin. Russian was difficult. I have tried a little bit of Themysciran. Languages are not so hard, but there are just so many of them. On Krypton, we only really had the one."

She leans her head back with a faint smile.

"Well, here, I will give you your first lesson: nimodh khap ... like sap ... w ... like a soft 'wah' ... :zrhueiao ... "

She grins, wrinkling her nose as she does.

"You'll need to wait until your next lesson to get the translation."

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
"YEah... it was... a gift from someone important to me. It helps to hide my aura so that I'm not broadcasting all the time." Phoebe explains.

"So you had a centralized, world-wide language? I know America loves to think it's American English here... but my second language was Japanese. And my third was *Elvish*." she jokes, and she returns Kara's smile, her nose wrinkling back as she looks to the blonde girl, and she sounds out the words:

"Nimodh khap... w :zrhueyao? -hueiao?" she stumbles a little bit, and she looks at Kara, her eyebrows rising up. "Why am I going to have to wait until my next lesson?"

Kara Danvers has posed:
"Because I am feeling mischief ... mischievous," Kara answers simply, tilting her head back and giving Phoebe a sidelong smile.

"There were other dialects on Krypton, but all formal documents and communication used the same global language. The regional dialects were more for art ... we did not speak Kandorian at home, but we learned it in school."

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
"Kara feeling Mischevious..." Phoebe gives a wry grin. "I feel like that's going to spell all sorts of trouble for me." she whispers quietly, and she leans back a little. "Kandorian? So is that 'Proper Kryptonian' or is that the... Official Language Name? I mean no one calls English 'Earth Language'. If there was a universal one... holy cats, what a mess it'd be. Someone speaking Manderin with a Joisey accent." she jokes, and she smiles up at Kara. "For Art, though. So... like performative dialects?"
