Downtown In Mutant Town
Date of Scene: 24 June 2022
Location: Bushwick <Mutant Town>
Synopsis: Mutant meet and greet.
Cast of Characters: Cheyenne Brawley, Hannah Montalcini, Gabby Kinney, Logan Howlett, James Proudstar, Robert Marksman

Cheyenne Brawley has posed:
As nightfall descends on the big city, the sounds of merrymaking echo between the ramshackle walls of Mutant Town. One hitherto abandoned building is a hive of activity tonight: cyclone wire fences, surrounding a construction yard, are decorated with paper ribbons, and the aromas of grilled meat and fire-roasting onions wafts on the cool summer breeze drifting in from the sea. Overhead flies a banner that reads: Mutant Works: Employment Solutions For The Talented.
It seems that, before renovations have even been completed, Buster is keen on getting people connected, and there's a job fair being thrown, albeit with only two organizations being represented; one, The Centinel Hotel, and the two, Hope House. A few local mutants, some clearly only having come for the free food - pork carnitas tacos with a sauce made of avocados, carmelized alliums and tomatoes mashed together; along with a choice of coconut milk horchata or cranberry juice-like agua de Jamaica - stand in line to fill out forms, or stand around mingling with the other partygoers. A few have even set up an impromptu jam session, with several guitars and a banjo in attendance.
Amidst the melee stands Cheyenne Brawley himself, dressed as always in his black suit, introducing himself and shaking hands here and there as newcomers drift in. "Where is my girl Miss Hannah," he mutters to himself, looking around.

Hannah Montalcini has posed:
Hannah Montalcini hadn't been expecting this many people. Nonetheless, she musters her courage and approaches... largely with the aid of the (as-yet-uncooked) food she's delivering. Maybe that'll keep others from paying much attention to her, even if her baldness and 4'9" height makes her rather distinctive. Besides, she's a volunteer at Hope House and someone needed to carry this.

She notices Buster in the crowd and hurries to drop off her burden so she can go to the one person she kind of knows around here.

Gabby Kinney has posed:
It had been a short while since Gabby had made her way to Mutant town. Her time lately was split between the group she ran with in Gotham, the school (she still had classes darnit), and sometimes traipsing off to the astral plane where only those who knew could find her. It was perhaps a bad way to get used to dealing with her new senses but it was SUCH a relief to not have to deal with them for awhile, too.

Now? Now she's rather happy to have them as the smell of carnitas gets to her from down the street luring her to this building endeavor. Dressed in an actual dress for once (she was off duty darnit!) she none the less wears her high-top sneakers, and probably has shorts underneath the skirt to the sundress. Practicality was always drilled into her even when she was attempting to look nice.

Making her way through the crowd she spots Cheyenne while he's glancing around, and quickly breaks into a grin. "Hey, cowboy!" she calls out her arm shooting up to wave toward him in greeting.

Logan Howlett has posed:
Wolverine was dragged close behind Gabby Kinney. Mutant town can be dangerous at times so is Logan is here to keep gabby from adding or subtracting from the population. Gabby may think she doesn't need an babysitter but Logan is still here partially of his own accord and partly on behest of the school.

Logan looks Gabby's friends up and down judging them.

Cheyenne Brawley has posed:
A great wok has been set up on a propane-fired cylinter in the center of the makeshift pavillion, with several mutant cooks attending it; one woman with a large stainless paddle stirs the contents around and around, until she pronounces it done and begins scooping out crispy tidbits of old-fashioned chicharrones, many with good-sized hunks of meat still attached, which get salted and spiced. "Come get it while it's hot," she calls with a big smile. "Churros are up next." Nearby, a large pot of chocolate sauce is held just below a simmer.
"Hey Gabby-girl," hollers Buster in response to her greeting, raising a hand to wave in kind, "glad you could make it. Who's grumpy Gus? I be..." he says with a grin, words trailing off as Hannah appears in his peripheral vision. "There you are, gal. You can quit workin' now, right? Chillax and multislack for a while." He gestures to the loaded table, "Have you ever had horchata before? If not, I bet you'd like it. Sweet and smooth, with a hint of cinnamon. Oh, more importantly, have you met Gabby?" he indicates the teen with an upturned palm, "She knows Central Park like the back of her hand, including all the best ice cream spots." He says a little louder to her: "Gabby, this is Hannah; I reckon she's about your age." A note in his tone implies a plea to make the Italian feel welcome. Meanwhile, the motley band has coalesced around a rousing rendition of Tom Petty's Free Fallin'.

James Proudstar has posed:
James Proudstar draws a crowd in MutantTown. He had seen the fliers and was curious more than anything thing else. He was still finishing his final paper, needed to get it proofread by someone. But the idea had merit and he was looking for some help for the Club. He also could smell the luxurious scents of the feast, the spices, the people. He recognizes sone of them and a group gathers to talk with Jim good naturedly as he makes hos was way towards the job postings.

Hannah Montalcini has posed:
Noticing Gabby seeking Cheyenne's attention, Hannah decides to hang back for now; he may be the only one here she knows, but she also realises he's working and she'd rather not recklessly interfere. When he calls out to her, however, she finds herself out of excuses. She approaches to greet Buster and his possibly-friends, trying to get over her nervousness by picturing how nice it'd be to have a job where she gets paid to punch people... and deliberately avoiding thinking about how rare that's likely to be in practice.

"Nice to meet you," she says, putting a friendly tone into her generic greeting. "I... do not believe so? Perhaps i have forgotten, however. I rarely eat ice cream... um... i mean, my senes of taste is faulty..."

Maybe this is why she doesn't seem particularly interested in the food.

Gabby Kinney has posed:
Gabby Kinney reaches back to drag Logan along in spite of his grumpy once-over of everyone earning another roll of her eyes. He meant well. He was trying to be a good dad. But she could really see the similarities between him and Laura with how rarely they seemed to trust anyone. Grinning in response to the greeting she offers, "This is my dad," she offers out before he distracts her with bringing Hannah to her attention.

"Hi! No we haven't met before but that's okay! Good to meet you!" Mention of not having a good level of taste earns a thoughtful nod as she considers. "Oh, yeah, I guess that would make getting icecream hard if it didn't taste much different. Still it's cold so that's always good on a hot day. What do you like to do for fun?" The fact that she's only a bit taller than Hannah? Well that was a nice perk she's not about to bring up. She knows how the short jokes get oooold real quick.

Logan Howlett has posed:
"hello" Logan says in a half grunt.

Logan can tell the 2 arent a danger so he's softens a tiny bit. "Name's Logan" Still not really ready to comitt to niceties.

Robert Marksman has posed:
Robert Marksman comes walking out of the hotel, heading up the street to the gathering. He has let others run the booth for the hotel, and is out taking some time for himself. He still wears the jacket and shades even on a late warm night. He looks over to Cheyenne giving the man a nod but not interrupting him talking to the others, instead he does take a moment to check in with the hoterl recruits.

Cheyenne Brawley has posed:
"Not a fan of ice cream, or tacos either, huh?" says the Texan to Hannah. "What's more your style? I could ask someone to rustle up a foccacia sandwich or somethin', if you like..." Still half-listening to his new security guard, he says to Gabby's pappy in his friendly drawl, grinning as he approaches the man and offers a hand to be shaken: "It's a pleasure to meet you, Logan. I'm Cheyenne Brawley, but everybody calls me Buster. You know, your daughter is the first local hereabouts that I would dare to call friendly." He chuckles, "Jake and I were talking about the evils of putting guacamole on hotdogs for weeks. Speaking of, where is that ol' boy?" He half-turns to glance about over his shoulder, and in the process observes James reviewing the job postings at the twin booths set up by the hiring organizations. "Looking for work, pard?" he calls, "or are you looking to hire?" In the same motion, Robert gets a wave and broad smile.
Meanwhile, at the wok station, churro batter is dropped into sizzling lard in a long, spiraling ribbon from an enormous piping bag with a star tip. When the pastry is done, the woman in charge of the fryer slides it onto a paper-lined tray and cuts it into ten-inch long sections with a pair of scissors. Cinnamon and powdered sugar soon follow, and a server escorts the first batch, along with several little paper cups of hot chocolate sauce, over to where Buster and the others are gathered; the server lowers the tray between Hannah and Gabby, waggling his eyebrows.

Hannah Montalcini has posed:
Hannah Montalcini gestures to her outfit (which currently includes a Small Horse Adventures t-shirt - the official version is too upmarket) and attempts a joke: "Well, you could already see that i have no taste."

She shrugs. "It is not all bad. I can just drink cold water when i am hot and not feel like i am missing anything. Strong spices still work for me, though. Also mint. It makes food selections uncomplicated. As to fun... um... this might sound bad, but i like fighting. I mean, not to cause harm, just the fighting part." Hopefully she'll get a job doing that very thing; her powers disqualify her from becoming a professional boxer, but there are no such restrictions for a security guard.

Thinking of her possible future career, she consciously looks around at the other people present... oh, there's that giant Native American guy she met before... and there's another unreasonably tall man too. Are people just generally bigger around here?

Gabby Kinney has posed:
Gabby Kinney grins over at Logan when he introduces himself with a nod of approval. "I met Cheyenne at the hot dog stand. They were having a buy one get one deal for his son opening his own stand, too," she explains matter-of-fact. Nevermind her stuff is usualyl revolving around food. She liked food. Who didn't like food? Okay Hannah maybe.

Glancing back to the other teen she offers a shrug. "Nothing wrong with that. I mean like martial artists and boxing clubs are a thing for a reason after all. If you enjoy it, nothing wrong with it! Plus it's great exercise." Her attention drifts away to spot a few other familiar faces, and she grins. "Hey James!"

Logan Howlett has posed:
"you hve no taste? do you smell?" Logan is confused by this revalation. "those senses are tied together."

Robert Marksman has posed:
Robert Marksman will stop by and get himself a bit of food, before walking over to the group, listening to the last of the conversation but not speaking up yet. He looks over to Logan nodding a greeting to the man he has met once before briefly.

Cheyenne Brawley has posed:
Noticing that most of the foot traffic into the work yard has slowed, Buster relaxes and takes a seat nearby on a wooden pallet stacked with paper sacks of Portland cement. "Won't be long before this place is ready to open proper." He strokes the point of his beard, reclaiming a plate of tacos he abandoned here some time before. "Y'all have any suggestions on how to do it with a bang?" Taking his own words a little too literally, he adds, "Maybe some fireworks? I bet the permit application is probably a mile long..."

Hannah Montalcini has posed:
"Hot dogs..." She sighs. "I have been working as a cook lately. Sometimes i am asked to make hot dogs. They should be easy, but somehow i can never get them right. If i can, i usually prefer to cook things i learned before the nerve damage." She nods to Logan. "Poor sense of smell, yes, though not as bad as my taste, and some smells are vivid. I do not understand why."

She greets Robert as he approaches, resisting a sudden urge to demand to know why he's so unreasonably big.

Buster's words provide a welcome distraction. "Um... maybe someone has powers that could... maybe... substitute? Is that safe?"

Gabby Kinney has posed:
"Churros? I heard churros. Excuse me," Gabby offers to both Logan and Hanna as she heads over for the line for that. "I haven't had churros since I was turned into a dinosaur that one time!"

That thought was left behind as she vanishes off into the crowd of those seeking food.

Logan Howlett has posed:
Logan gives an acknowledging nod to Marksmen "hey bub"

Logan is suddenly dragged along too with Gabby's exist. "Nice to meet y'all." logan says actually deciding to speak. "Sorry she's so impulsive but churros are hard to say no to."

Cheyenne Brawley has posed:
"Later Gabby-girl," Buster mumbles through a mouthful of carnitas, "and nice meeting you, Logan." He swallows and turns his attention on Hannah. "Last time we talked about it, sounded like you meant to stay at Hope House. I won't discourage you from helping a good cause, but when we're open for business on the daily, I'll need someone in charge of security full time. If you're interested." He dumps a mouthful of horchata into his piehole and chews, ice and all.

Robert Marksman has posed:
Robert Marksman looks over and says "Looks like things are going pretty well, and you could probably find someone with powers to do it but you will still want to get clearance with the city so they don't think it was an attack or something."

Hannah Montalcini has posed:
Hannah Montalcini shakes her head. "I do nothing they could not do without me, and with an income, i could make donations that would likely help more than my volunteering does. But... when you say in charge of security, do you mean a management position? I doubt i would be suitable. And i lack the imposing stature so often useful for security guards who attempt to prevent violence through intimidation... really, my value is limited to after the violence begins... nonetheless, i am interested; i am not trying to talk my way out of the job, merely to make sure i do not get hired for the wrong position." A thought strikes her, and she adds, "If it would be useful, i could fight someone to demonstrate? Remember, they would not remain hurt."

Cheyenne Brawley has posed:
"I'm not thinkin' management per se, but someone in a leadership role." Buster indicates all of Mutant Town with outspread arms. "I see a lot of potential in you, gal. You know your way around these parts, and you must be able to avoid conflict as much as handle yourself in it, or else you wouldn't still be alive. Besides, I like ya." He chuckles and turns to Robert, adding: "Do you know anony with some flashy sort of powers that might do it, buddy?"

Hannah Montalcini has posed:
Hannah Montalcinis shoulders slump. She doesn't want to disappoint him, but... "I may know my way around, but no better than a street map. Avoiding conflict? No; if i am attacked rarely it is because there is little reason to attack me. Potential? Maybe... but if you plan to make me a leader right away, you will be disappointed."

She attempts a smile. "Still... at least you can be sure i do not hide the truth?"

Robert Marksman has posed:
Robert Marksman looks over and says "A little training and you could learn more about the things he wants ya to improve in." He looks over to Cheynee and says "Not off the top of my head my own powers are not very flashy."

Hannah Montalcini has posed:
Hannah Montalcini nods gratefully to Robert. "Yes, certainly, i am willing to learn! I was concerned because it sounded like i would be expected to immediately take on a leadership role, which i am unprepared for. As it is... my only qualifications involve hitting and healing. As well as cooking and mental arithmatic, but those are likely irrelevant."

She realises that she's been largely ignoring Robert, conversation-wise, so she makes a clumsy attempt to rectify that. "So... um... you have powers too? I seem to be meeting a lot of us lately..."

Cheyenne Brawley has posed:
Buster points at Robert in a 'he knows what he's talking about' kind of way. "Try as you might, gal, you're not gonna talk me out of it. Sometimes others see beauty and talents in people they don't see in themselves." He nods sagely, "And I see a lot of both in you, Hannah." He leans toward Marksman, equally keen on learning the scoop on his abilities.

Robert Marksman has posed:
Robert Marksman nods, and says "Well we do sorta stay here in Mutant Town." He motions to the area "I am Dr. Robert Markman, I have a few subtle abilities but I can also make portals from one place to another, you say you heal? Yourself or others?

Hannah Montalcini has posed:
Hannah Montalcini is surprised by the 'beauty' comment. Is he coming on to her? And possibly in need of glasses? Well, she'll ignore it for now. Power discussions take precedence.

"Portals... that must be very useful. Do you work in goods transportation? As for me... all I do is do more damage when i hit, but also cause people i hit to subsequently heal more than i damaged them.... and i also heal myself as a side effect. Please do not ask me to explain how this makes any sense - i would like to know that myself."

Cheyenne Brawley has posed:
Buster's face lights up like a little boy at Christmas. "Portals? You mean, like:" he make an O with his left hand, motions popping something through, and it appearing in a different location. He learns forward, interest piqued, "What about the healing?" If his 'beauty' remark made Hannah uncomfortable, he is blissfully, naively, oblivious.

Robert Marksman has posed:
Robert Marksman looks over and says "Yea but most people who go through them are creeped out by going through them, so is a power I use less with others." He admits. He looks to Hanna, and says "Sounds like you impart of your bio energy into them and somehow draw it back but as you do it repairs damage on them and yourself. Have you tried healing yourself or others without punching someone first?"

Hannah Montalcini has posed:
"Buster, i am sure you remember that time i punched you in the hand and, a few minutes later, the pain was completely gone? And... that man in the crater earlier: when i found him, he was badly bruised and had a severe torso lasceration. I... punched all that away."

Hannah considers Robert's words. "That could be useful, if i knew how. So far, the healing has always increased with the damage, so a weak blow means a weak heal... and i cannot use it directly on myself. It was different when i was comatose, but as it is i know of no way to use it non-violently." She shrugs helplessly. "Believe me, i have tried."

Cheyenne Brawley has posed:
"Shucks, Hannah, I know how your power works," Buster shakes out his hand in memory of the time she punched him, "what I meant was, Robert, do you somehow use your portals in your practice? Like, wizz-bang, you make a portal and granny's breast cancer is gonzo?"

Robert Marksman has posed:
Robert Marksman shakes his head a bit to this and says "Trying to make portals inside someone would be messy, not the power I use in my practice is X-ray vision, no need for an x-ray machine when I can give a glance over you, and see whats is or has been busted.

Hannah Montalcini has posed:
Hannah Montalcini looks at Robert nervously. "Just to confirm: you are not emitting x-rays continually when you look at people? Or... are you just using the phrase 'x-ray vision' colloquially? The equivalent without the dangers would certainly be useful."

She hesitates, then adds, "Although portals could still be useful: sometimes it can be dangerous to move a patient through conventional means."

Cheyenne Brawley has posed:
Buster strokes his beard with a grin. "I tell you what, buddy. I wanna go through a portal, someday, just for the hell of it. How many people can say they've done that, I mean..." He looks over Robert's shoulder and observes the manager in charge of staffing at the Centinel motioning for his attention. "Sorry y'all, I better skidaddle." He drops his half-eaten plate of tacos once again and is off in a dash.

Robert Marksman has posed:
Robert Marksman looks over and says "Just so people understand it easier, does not seem to produce any radiation, and I can control how much I look through from a sheet of paper to people if I need to." He offers. He looks to Cheyenne "See ya man."

Cheyenne Brawley has posed:
With a rolling motion of a hand, Buster beckons Hannah over. The look on his face implies an emergency has indeed emerged.

Hannah Montalcini has posed:
Hannah Montalcini blinks and rushes off, waving to the doctor as she goes. "Duty calls, or something! We'll chat another time, maybe?" That shouted comment was probably directed to Robert, but as she was already running and not looking back, it's impossible to be certain.

Cheyenne Brawley has posed:
Buster leans in and whispers so only Hannah can hear, "We had someone try to set fire to the building. Will you help us track them down, before they get too far?"
