Date of Scene: 14 July 2022
Location: Big Belly Burger - Amusement Mile
Synopsis: Helena catches up with Bette as a fellow Bird of Prey member.
Cast of Characters: Helena Bertinelli, Bette Kane

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli hadn't had time to work with Bette Kane as part of the Birds of Prey so far. It was just a matter of timing and assignments. It didn't help that Helena was busy for three quarters of the year teaching as well.

Finally Helena decided she needed to make something happen since waiting for the timing to work out, well, hadn't. She texted Bette.

<<Hey - feel like grabbing a bite at BBB? My treat. Really want to catch up with you! - Hels>>

Bette Kane has posed:
Bette Kane had a busy schedule too, between the tennis circuit and her job as a literal poster girl for the Army, and recruiter. Still, her real passion was always in the Gotham night time. Getting a text from that 'Huntress' was a serious surprise, and she even made sure by checking with the clock tower database. That's why it took like twenty minutes to reply.

<Of course, sure.. Love to, see you there in a few minutes.>

Then she grabs her gear, and hops in her Corvette. Parking in an alley, she heads on over.

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli had grabbed a booth when she arrived. She'd just orderd a chocoate shake to work on whle she waited for Bette to arrive. On seeing the blonde woman, she smiled and moved to get up. "Bette. Hi. I'm Helena." She offers a hand in greeting. "I'm sorry it's taken us this long to catch up. But I'm glad we could make this work so we could fix that."

Bette Kane has posed:
Better quickly offers her hand in return. "Hi, a pleasure to meet you." She smiles brightly, and gives a quick gentle hand shake before moving to get a seat. "Hi, umm, I have heard of you." Though she gives up little more than that about the where and when, and which, a thing with the costume crowd that also has a bit of a name in their private life too. "I never know who I can bother, so, thank you for the invitation."

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli nods, "Well I'll take having been heard of." A wink. "C'mon. Let's get our order and we can get to the fun part - fries in chocolate shakes while we chat!" She's joking. Probably.

Moving toward the counter to order, she blinks, "Bette. You can talk to absolutely any of us. Any time. We're all here for each other" She offers reassuringly.

Bette Kane has posed:
Bette is quick to line up, and equally quick not to order fries. Still, she offers a bright smile and nod, getting the fried chicken sandwich, and going along with the chocolate shake. "It is just a little intimidating sometimes. Some people might be considered a freind of the family.. I feel more like the family of a friend sometimes. You know?" She says as she follows back to the booth. "I know everybody, but, it is my cousins that make up the in-crowd. I tried when I was younger, before.. But.. It didn't work out as well, so I try to help, but not to bother so much."

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli orders a double burger, a large fry and a second chocolate shake. Because, 900 sit-ups a day learns an reward sometimes.

Once back to the booth she drops in with her tray of food. "I can understand. But you're on the team. There's a reason and it isn't just that you have the same last name as our Number 2." She smiles. "You have skills. You belong. Don't talk yourself out of why you're with the rest of us."

She lifts her shake, offering a toast of sorts, "To getting to know each other and to being teammates."

Bette Kane has posed:
Bette has a rather natural, and trained self-confidence to her thanks to being a Kane, and in the top of her class at West Point. So, the slightly self-conscious manner naturally easily out of place on her, making it look a little like she is unsettled appearing unsettled. Still, she has a ready smile and a cheerfulness that seems to do battle with the ackwardness. "Thank you, and of course, I am always ready and happy to help out when ever I can." The toast is met with the plastic cup, that Big Belly promises is recycled, and made from recycled plastic. "Teammates." She says a bit more upbeat again. "I really do need to train more. And if you have time I would love some pointers, you know, if you don't mind, and when you aren't busy."

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli slurps on her shake and then nods "It's my pleasure, Bette." She takes a bite of her burger and listens. A nod as she swallows, "The tower has plenty of training facilities. We can absolutely train. I'd love to. And I'd love to have Huntress go out with Flame Bird. It'd be a privilege to work along side you."

Bette Kane has posed:
Yes, Bette does at least watch to see if french fry and shake connect. "That would be really great. I have never really done the patrol thing with anybody, but Kate." And then, it is well, challenging at time because Kate and Bette can be more different than two Robins. She takes a couple of bites and nods. "My friend Ollie taught me how to use a bow, but I am not much better with it than a kid with one summer camp in their background." Of course, compared to Queen, most people would see themselves that way, or with a crossbow, compared to present company. "So, anytime, really. It would be really great."

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli does indeed pause to dip a fry into chocolate shake. Who _does_ that? Helena does. Munching, she smiles. "Well I can say that patrolling with Kate? Yeah. She's intense. Damned good. But intense."

"Let's start with some training and sparing at the Tower first? We can get used to working together before we need to really count on each other." Not because she has doubts. Because it is just that important to understand how each other is going to respond in a given situation." Another bite of burger.

"We'll get out on the rooftops too." She smiles. "So.. other than play dress up like the rest of us.. what other things do you like to do, Bette? If you don't mind me trying to get to know you better."

Bette Kane has posed:
"That sounds like a good idea." Bette taking a bit more attention to her own shake, though not adding anything. The whole fry matter doesn't seem to bother her seeing it. Only good could come of actually training in Bette's mind.

"I play tennis and I work at some of the local recruiting offices for the army.." Some people don't follow it, but Bette manages to finish high in the big tournments like the US Open, and actually second in the last Australian Open. "I also handle a lot of the 'appearances' for the Kane family." While she doesn't raise her hands, the air quotes are that sort of audible in her voice. "But, I have a few other hobbies: skiing, base jumping, and swimming."

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli listens and nods. "I... feel like maybe I've heard your name regarding tennis. But I have to admit I am not an active fan. Just catch a few of the events on TV when I've been grading papers." She nods, "That has to be a challenge - putting in appearances." She makes a face, "I can't really imagine." She might have had she actually grown up in The Family as she had been destined to as a young girl.

"Base jumping? Wow. That's kind of useful for being able to run the rooftops and buildings in our night job." She grins a little. "Everything has some relevance I suppose."

Bette Kane has posed:
"Grading papers and teaching school, that takes courage. That's real stuff, important. I could never imagine trying that. Doing the social thing is not so bad, I rather like it. It is a way to help out, in so much as the big charities do. I usually stand in for Kane functions, but a few times, I get to deliver the Wayne check too. Kate hates it, usually.. Bruce is often too busy and Damien and Dick are not going to do it. Sometimes, I even represent for Army too, but that is usually different things." The blonde says, sturring her shake to loosen it with the straw through the lid.

A little tense shiver, "But teaching, that must be a mess of rewarding and frustrating."

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli laughs quietly. "It.. is a bit like patrolling at night. Only I can't but the difficult ones into a head lock or cuff them and leave them for GCPD to take into custody. Well. SO far. I'd do it if I had to" she admits to herself.

"But.. it is rewarding, you're right. It's a way to be able to give back. Maybe influence some of these kids to continue to get an education and better themselves." She laughs at herself, "That got deep quick didn't it?"

Bette Kane has posed:
"Hey, teachers don't get near enough credit. Politics get in your way more than the Army." Bette pauses to eat a little bit more. Then she puts the sandwich down for a couple of slurps, "Nothing wrong with that. But yeah.. When in the summer, and not dealing with your night job, what other hobbies do you have?"

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli sits back. "Well, other than eating fries with my shake..." she grins. "I tend to work out. A lot." Tell her about the 900 sit ups every day, Helena.

"I.. love to cook." SHe smirks, "I'm Italian. It's kind of mandatory to love to cook I think. I love just going out for rides on my motorcycle. Even when it isn't related to working nights." She sips her shake, "If you can believe it, I like to cross-stitch. It's relaxing to me."

Bette Kane has posed:
There is a brow lift, "I eat mine with mayo, so, you know, eat as you like." Bette says and then adds, "When I eat fries, try to avoid the starches a bit." A slight grin and she shifts her shoulders. "That's a thing.. I don't do, haven't mastered, honestly.. I think my great grandmother was the last Kane woman to actually know how to cook. But we hire great cooks. My Dad had to teach me how to do laundry before I went off to West Point. So, that I can do.. But most practical domestic stuff.. I learned a bit in the army, but most of it is just a thing that magically forms. I appreciate the people that do it though. I can work a microwave though." Bette says in a rather honest tone, not a bragging one.

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli nods. "I've done fries with mayo. It isn't bad. I just like the salty with sweet from eating them with a shake." She blinks, "I don't think I'd have been allowed to life, let alone leave home if I didn't know how to cook the staple Italian dishes.." Families are so different aren't they?

She points a finger at Bette, "That settles it. You're coming over to my place soon. I'm going to teach you how to _properly_ make spaghetti and a good bolognese sauce. Every girl has to be able to at least prepare a good sphaghetti.." She says it like it is a cardinal sin. And one she is on a crusade to resolve in at least this one case.

Bette Kane has posed:
There is a soft laugh as the woman slips in to a clearly more natural relaxed state. "I would be happy to, fair warning though. I thought briefly about criminology, until I had to do lab practicals in chemistry. Just so you know, and you are okay with it." A few more bites, and as most soldiers, she is a fast eater, and finished with the sandwich with little effort. "And I certainly like to eat it."

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli grins, "Challenge accepted, soldier." She raises her brows playfully as she finishes off her meal. Now she has a second shake to finish. And she sets in on that. Apparently she is not too worried about excess carbs and calories.

A nod, "But yes. the eating is a good part. The best part? Cooking with family or friends. Watching it all start to come together. The colors. The aroma. It's.. an amazing way to share time with those we care about."

Bette Kane has posed:
"Sounds like it would be great." Though it obviously is well outside her experience, much of the early meals shared with family having been in a dinning room with one of those tables of entertaining size. When it was just the family, one could rarely reach someone else with a long stretch from both. "And I do always feel a since of pride when I learn to do something myself."

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli smiles warmly and nods. "We're family. Just a bigger one. More nebulous. But it's no less true. And I will always enjoy helping my family out. Besides, once you learn I'm going to enjoy hearing how you blow Kate's mind when you cook for her..." There's always a little mischief afoot.

Bette Kane has posed:
There is a sudden puzzled look on the blond haired woman's face, "I had not thought about it. Kate.. Might be able to cook, I don't actually know. It seems like something she would do, as an act of rebellion. It is how she can be sometimes. But, she would be shocked if I suddenly could cook for certain." A slight smile, replaces the 'hmm?' expression quickly enough. Bette absolutely admires her cousin, but the two are most different in that Kate is in constant pursuit of doing her own thing, where as Bette is the conformist of her generation in regards to the family expectations.

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli smiles. "Well we'll make it happen. And what you do with your knew-found power of meal creation? Well that will be up to you. Just use it responsibly" she jokes. She sits back, looking around the room, then outside absently. Always trying to keep aware of surroundings. Old habits Bette would recognize no doubt.

Bette Kane has posed:
Another light laugh, "I will try to only use it for good." Bette states in a bit of a mock serious tone. The paper is folded from her sandwich. "It has really been great meeting you. I have to make an appointment with scholorship student at Gotham University to make sure all their paperwork is processed. Call me anytime, Helena. I look forward to the lesson, and maybe you can teach me that ninja poof thing too."

Helena Bertinelli has posed:
Helena Bertinelli nods seriously. "Yes. Only for good. The nourishment of family and friends, or the winning of hearts you have your sights set upon" because Italian food is the language of love. Right?

She smiles. "It was really good to catch up with you Bette. I'm glad we did." She moves to stand and offer the blonde a warm hug if welcomed. "Good luch with navigating the paperwork. I will. The same goes for you. Any reason, any time." A laugh, "I can teach you what I know, but I'm no Bat" she jokes.

"Take care of yourself Bette. I'll clean up the table, don't worry about it" she offers as she watches the blonde prepare to leave.

Bette Kane has posed:
Bette nods, but she does dump her own stuff on habit without a thought. It is just a natural thing for the military training. "Talk to you soon, I hope." She comments on the way out. "And thank you again."
