Cast of Characters: Evangeline Whedon, Clarice Ferguson

Evangeline Whedon has posed:
Mutant Town rarely had cops trying to patrol the area. At least not within it, but the borders of Bushwick were patrolled all the more for it, maintaining the barrier between mutants and non-mutants was enforced in a sort of de facto manner. After all mutants were a threat to insurance companies everywhere. As a result, that was where one Mutant Rights Lawyer found herself more often than not. On the side of the street, offering council to a teenaged mutant that was cuffed and sitting on the sidewalk. A cop car on the side of the road with lights flickering.

She slipped the kid a card, murmuring to him about his rights, and shooting the officer in question a glare as she stood. The dark haired woman exhaled a breath, and if it looked more visible than it should in the warm summer morning.. maybe it was a trick of the light.

Evangeline wore a simple dark grey suit and stepped away as the teen was carted off. She'd likely have some long hours that night to deal with. A sigh pulled from her lips as she turned and the car with lights drove off down the streeet.

Clarice Ferguson has posed:
Clarice has found herself more and more drawn to spending time at Mutant Town, both to help but also to sense out those that would be willing to join the Brotherhood, to continue the legacy that was supposedly lost. And with some of her beliefs questioned by a certain bald, wheelchair-bound professor she was currently roaming down the streets of mutant town, skirting the edges. The exchange is watched from an alley, she taking note of the woman, the card being given...

A moment of indecision later Clarice steps out into the light, slowly, making her way closer, "It is a good thing what you did, but do you believe it will be enough?" she questions, no malice on her tone. Simply curiosity.

She is dressed in a rather plain t-shirt, jeans, a long jacket. The hair is held up and away to show her ears, no hiding of her mutant heritage.

Evangeline Whedon has posed:
Evangeline had dug out her phone, typing away an email as she walked, her gaze half distracted as Clarice strode from the ally and into the light of the cracked sidewalk. She paused, clicking her phone off as she turned to face the purple haired woman and glance over at her. "Well, it depends heavily on the judge. But most cases like his don't have more than a public defender that's overworked with hundreds of cases. Even a half slapped together defense will likely get him off with something lighter than he'd get otherwise." She murmured, archined a dark eyebrow upward.

"I'm Evangeline Whedon, attorney. I'm with the Mutant Rights League." She offered, holding out her hand to Clarice.

Clarice Ferguson has posed:
Clarice's gaze go up and down on Evangeline's form when she mentions being part of the mutant rights league. "Clarice. Clarice Ferguson." she introduces herself, extending her hand to shake Evangeline's. A faint smile creeps up to her features. "And I suppose I meant in a more general manner. If ..., this help will be enough." a pause as she lets out a brief sigh. "More and more I find myself thinking if all we are doing is enough, you know?"

Her unnatural green eyes turn up to settle on Evangeline's, watching, clearly what she is talking about something that's been on her mind for a time now.

Evangeline Whedon has posed:
Evangeline's grip was firm but not overly so. Confident, without the need to prove anything or make any attempts to be domineering. "And what would the alternative be, Miss Ferguson?" She let her hand fall away as she nodded her head to the street around them. "Give up our claim to live as equal members of society? Hide away and refuse to deal with humans at all?" She tilted her head.

"Most people at the end of the day just want to live peacefully. I find that working within the system to change it from within most effective. Even if that change is slow."

Clarice Ferguson has posed:
"That's the million dollar question, isn't it?" Clarice replies, her own shake rather normal and unassuming, hand returning to rest inside a pocket of her jeans. "How can we make sure we are respected?" she asks, her eyes following Evangeline's gaze to the rest of the street. "Hatred will always exist towards us, should we respond in the same measure?" her shoulders rising in a shrug.

With the mention that she is trying to work within the system both brows quirk up. "Have you noted any visible change so far? Working within the system?"

Evangeline Whedon has posed:
Evangeline's lips twitched into a smile as she shifted her weight on her black flats. "Change of the type I'm speaking of is slow, extremely so. It makes people with hotter heads less inclined to work for it. It's not rewarding. But it's typically longer lasting." She mused, and exhaled a breath slowly, thoughtfully.

"As far as visible changes? My contacts in the various legal departments still speak to me after being outed from time to time, and I haven't been removed from the bar association."

Clarice Ferguson has posed:
"Waiting and trying to be diplomatic made Genosha's fall happen." Clarice notes, not hiding the intensity on her tone when she says it, her frown growing slowly. "We have taken serious steps back after it happened." she adds, also thoughtful.

"I suppose if you are competent enough people still want to work with you. That's a good thing." She takes in a breath, lips pressing together, "And already groups are speaking up against us and demanding action." perhaps she is talking about the purifiers!

Evangeline Whedon has posed:
Evangeline hesitated and turned to look at the woman again, her arms folded as she rocked her weight back on her heels. "I'm sorry you went through that. Truly, I am." She offered softly, her voice measured and her dark eyes soft. "But Genosha was an isolationist nation prior to the attack. Part of that was political necessity as I understand the UN had little interest there." She continued onward.

"But Sentinels existed before Genosha, and are separate from diplomatic relations therein. It was because of activists here in the States that their use was banned on civilians." She arched a brow upward, letting her hands fall away.

"And it's their right to speak, just as it's our right to do so. It's why I'm working with the MRL."

Clarice Ferguson has posed:
Clarice inclines her head. Clearly what had happened was still vivid in her mind and heart. But the words were accepted, lips pressed to a grim line. "It was also a place for mutants to live in peace, it was all we wanted. And look at what happened." she murmurs, arms moving to fold together. "I don't think it to be a question of diplomatic relations, but an attack out of fear on us, or whatever it may have been." a shake of her head given. "It's still to be discovered what truly happened."

At those last words she pauses a moment though, considering them. "Not sure if hatred should be given a voice to speak up. But things are as they are I guess." and sure, she knew there were those who called for hatred on her side too. Even people close to her. But then she breaks into another smile.

"I am sorry, just a lot of questions on my mind and not yet as many answers as I would like."

Evangeline Whedon has posed:
Evangeline listened with patience and a warmth in her gaze as she did so. "No one has answers to these questions Miss Ferguson. It's why the debate remains. But I find that ignoring the outside world, and silencing hate doesn't stop it either. It simply goes under the radar and blows up when people least expect it." She murmured, her voice gentle.

"It's better to let people scream their lungs out, they tend to listen more when they're tired." She added, a small smile curing at her lips.

"And it's in that moment, that I find it best to speak."

Clarice Ferguson has posed:
That brings a brief laugh out of Clarice, amusement on her features for a few moments. "Cunning. But I suppose you have been doing this for a while now." and noooo, Clarice isn't calling her old! Just experienced and confident on what she is doing. She doesn't want to risk the dragon's breath afterall! "I just can't stay still while everything happens so..., I will have to find my own way to help. A work in progress but one I look forward to."

She then nods. "You seem to have find yours. I can respect that. I would like to talk to you again sometime. Can I have one of your cards?" She then asks, quirking a brow up in an hopeful manner.

Evangeline Whedon has posed:
Evangeline shrugged once, and moved to dig into her backpocket for her wallet. She pulled out a single crips white card, the lettering in simple plain back script. She held out the card for Clarice and she flashed another small, gentle smile. "We all have different roles we must play, but that doesn't mean any of them are less important than the other. I just happened to be damned good at arguing." She joked lightly, as she slipped her wallet back into her pocket.

"Call me if you need to. Or if you find anyone that needs legal help."
