Cast of Characters: Sarah Rainmaker, Mary Bromfield

Sarah Rainmaker has posed:
It's a rainy day in New York. Not a downpour, but a steady fall of warm rain that's cooled the hot summer air down a few degrees, with enough of a wind to swirl around loose debris as overcast clouds rumble with distant thunder overhead.

Thus, on the NYU campus, most students are hurrying between classes. Those who planned well have their unbrellas out, or their hoodies up. Those who didn't think to check the weather or decided to roll the dice if they could beat the rain are reduced to hurrying between buildings, trying to avoid being drenched by the time they arrive.

    Save one place.

On the square today, a tall young woman with long black hair has found a tree that she's leaning back against, apparently not bothered by the possibility of thunderbolts. Or the rain, in fact, as for some reason, in a small pattern around her rain just...doesn't seem to fall on her. All the benefits of enjoying the sounds and scents of a rain storm, with no risk of ruining the book she's reading. Since most people are focused on their own hurried progress, she gets looks, but few are coming close enought o realize just how unexpectedly blessed with the water just...missing her.

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary is just heading out of her classes, having finished for the day as she hauls the backpack over her shoulder. She does have a jacket on, but the hood is down as she seems to enjoy the feeling of the rain. At the distant sound of thunder, she smiles a bit more, walking past Sarah...

And then she notices the gap in the rain around her as she reads. Even with the wind and everything else. And she pauses, "Wow, that is a /very/ cool trick." She gives the other girl a warm grin, tilting her head curiously as if wondering how she did it.

Sarah Rainmaker has posed:
Sarah blinks and looks up at Mary. Shit. Someone noticed. Her first thought is that she needs to release the effect and try and brush it off, but she struggles with the idea, that moment of suprise and concern fading on her face with it as she relaxes slightly, letting out a breath. "Think so?" Well. She IS trying to be more public, right? Though she's still torn on how much. Little things like this, people don't notice as much, but she's already aware there's at least one college group pro-human group that would probably hassle her if they knew she was here.

"...thanks." she says in a quiet alto. "Keeps my book dry, if nothing else. Doesn't bother you then?"

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary grins, "Not at all. Honestly, a bit jealous. I wish I could control rain like that." She gives Sarah a curious look, "Not used to people being cool with it? I can understand that... I mean, not me personally, but I have friends and." She pauses, thinking about it.

"Well, they're mutants, and they definitely have a hard life. Especially with Kelly doing the crap he's doing." She makes a bit of a face, then coughs, "Sorry, that's a whole other rant. I'm Mary, by the way."

Sarah Rainmaker has posed:
Those brown eyes light on Mary, focusing more on her as she looks her over curiously, just a brief flick down her outfit before returning to her face. "I'm fairly sure I'm not a mutant, but I don't think it matters to a lot of people." Sarah says, frowning. "And Kelly's an ass. Just one more example of a demagogue politician trying to stir up emotion and hate to get themselves elected. Going for the segement of the population who feel they should be able to hate and oppress whoever they want just because they're different."

She purses her lips. "Not that Luthor as the capitalist's capitalist is that much better, just he's a issue in other ways." She sighs. "Does make me wish we had more a European party system with lots of them instead of just two." She shakes her head. "Gah, now I got started, sorry. It's a sore point for me. Not too fond of how the government operates often."

She tilts her head a bit, then pushes herself up to her feet, brushing loose grass bits off her jeans, then offering a hand. "I'm Sarah. Sarah Rainmaker." She has a subdued twinkle in her eyes. "And yes, I know, appropriate name. Shows the spirits had a sense of humor when my mother named me."

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary grins, "Yeah, not much in the way of coincidences. Mary Bromfield. Which means, well, absolutely nothing as far as I can tell. But it works for me I guess." She does, however, nod in agreement, "Yeah, it's like the old Alien versus Predator tagline, 'no matter who wins, we lose' right?" She makes a bit of a face.

"Honestly, I guess that makes my major all the more important these days. Just started sophomore work as a journalism major, and interning over at the Daily Planet. Thank goodness for the Hyperloop, right?" Otherwise that would be a really wild commute!

Sarah Rainmaker has posed:
"Wow, yeah, that's quite a run to work and back." Sarah agrees. "I haven't picked a major yet, though I'm leaning towards Gender Studies or Sociology so far." She looks thoughful. "Or maybe some sort of Minority Studies, not sure." She shrugs her shoulders. "I've got a lot of interests in those areas at least."

She looks curious. "Oh? Have you actually written anything yet, or is it more doing background work for stories and stuff like that?"

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary chuckles, "Honestly, I'm mostly just handling a lot of social media and doing some minor writing and reporting. My supervisor, Mr. Kent, he's a really sharp reporter, and I'm learning a lot from him. It's definitely more than just fetching coffee and bagels, which I did enough /before/ my internship." She flashes an easy grin at Sarah. "I worked as a barista before, but dropped that with the internship... especially since it's paid. That helps a ton."

She nods, "And those all sound pretty cool, honestly. I just like getting out there and in the middle of things... journalism seems like a good way to do that for me."

Sarah Rainmaker has posed:
"Nothing wrong with knowing how to make good coffee." Sarah says simply, smiling a bit. "But lucky that you found a good paying internship, most times they just want you to do it for the experience or something...or pay you absolutely minimum wage for it." She shakes her head. "What kind of news do you want to do?" she says curiously. "Opinion pieces? Social, or political, or slice of life sort of stories?" She mmms. "Social media stuff...I admit I haven't gotten the hang of that. Where I grew up, it just wasn't much of a thing.' She frowns. "And it just seems really tiring trying to keep up with all the constant tweets and such."

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary snickers, "Oh, it's worse than that, I'm actually a gaming streamer. Mostly roleplaying stuff, but sometimes other games too. Actually, the whole family does stuff like that. Two of my little brothers do a superhero-themed podcast, and two of the others do a Minecraft stream. I helped set that up for them." She grins cheerfully, "Doing my part to corrupt the youth, you know?"

She snickers, "And, well, I run a Twitter account... that mostly deals with cute cats living in coffeeshops. Just recently got verified, don't ask me how that happened."

Sarah Rainmaker has posed:
Sarah raises a brow. "Also something I haven't done a lot of; I know a little bit about computers but haven't played a lot of game soutside of like solitaire or tetris or such." she admits. "Superheros, like a fan thing?" she asks curiously, idly sliding her hands in her pockets as they talk. "Uh...I'm guessing verified is a good thing?" she offers after a moment.

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary chuckles, "Yeah, I guess... I just take pictures, or get pictures, of cool cats in coffeehouses." She shrugs, "But yeah, Billy and Freddy are huge superhero fans, they have a whole /thing/ they do with the podcast. Occasionally they even manage to get a superhero interview, though that's hard to do for obvious reasons." She grins at the mention of games, "Well, for me, it's not about the game, it's about telling a story, that's why I like the roleplaying, you know? Just feels great to tell a story you want to tell."

Sarah Rainmaker has posed:
Sarah hmmms, thinking as she reaches up to idly brush a stray strand or two of black hair behind an ear. "Oh, I can get that. It's fun to have the fantasy and forget about the real world sometimes." she agrees. "This is, what, Dungeons and Dragons?" she wonders curiously. "Or that one with the..vampires?" There's a slight hesistation on the last word. "Or wizards or faerie or such."

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary grins, "Actually, yeah, it's D&D. Come a long way since where it used to be, which is great. Honestly, some of that early stuff was totally cringe." She makes a bit of a face, but smiles, "Anyway, it was nice to meet you Sarah, but I gotta book to make it to my internship."

She pauses, and hands over a business card, "Hey, here's my info. If you ever want to talk or want a friendly word in the press, let me know. With my friends... well, I'm thinking of doing a series of articles in the Planet about powered folks. Just something to humanize them, you know? And if you wanted, I'd love to get your input too."

Sarah Rainmaker has posed:
The Apache woman reaches out to take the card, looking it over curiously. "Sure...uh...wait..." She crouches down, rummaging around in her bag to pull out a sticky note and writes her name and number on it, offering it back to Mary as she straightens. "Here...and..sure? I mean..." She frowns. "I'm sorta...still getting used to the idea of being more public with what I can do, but if you think it'd help, we could grab coffee or something?" She not really going to turn down meeting a new person when she's still feeling fairly isolated in a new setting.

Especially a cute one, though tragically she's doomed to disappointment there considering Mary is taken.

"Give me a call sometime, either way? Maybe this...D&D stuff. I've never tried it, it might be interesting." she admit, smiling a bit. "Don't let me make you late though, good luck at your job."

Mary Bromfield has posed:
Mary smiles and takes the card back, "Sure, coffee would be great... would be a novel experience not to have to serve it, honestly." She laughs a bit, "Great to meet you, Sarah, and I hope to see you soon!" And the best part is, even if there's no ulterior romantic motives at the moment, she gives the sense that she really does mean it.

Mary is not one for insincerity, as she waves, "I'll definitely give you a call, for sure! Take care, Sarah!" With that, she books off, waving back towards Sarah as she hustles towards the Hyperloop station.
