First Day Back 2020 Edition
Date of Scene: 15 September 2020
Location: Swimming Pool / Patio Deck
Synopsis: Great times are had by the pool soon after the start of the school year!
Cast of Characters: Jean Grey, Bobby Drake, Piotr Rasputin, Samuel Guthrie, Julio Richter

Jean Grey has posed:
It's been a busy first day of school back at the Institute. New kids learning the ropes, older kids dealing with being back in the grind, and teachers trying to stay one step ahead of said kids. So, to try and keep things light... and to take advantage of the warmth while they still can, the new Headmistress decided to have a pool party and barbeque dinner to welcome everyone back.

She also might have encouraged the faculty to be a little light on homework that would be due the next day...

In any case, Doctor Grey (or Jean, if you prefer) is standing near the grill, telekinetically fetching drinks from the cooler for the kids. Showing off a bit, maybe, especially since she seems to know what they really want before they even ask. She's wearing a simple green top and matching sarong, looking perfectly casual despite her recent promotion.

Bobby Drake has posed:
Bobby has the distinct advantage/disadvantage that at just 22, he's one of the youngest teachers at the school, which is probably why he teaches math to some of the youngest kids. But it also means that he tends to fly beneath the radar and doesn't trigger the 'it's a teacher' response among most of the older kids. He's currently sprawled in a chair nearby with a drink in hand, enjoying the warmth and not manning the grill in a pair of navy blue swim trunks.

Piotr Rasputin has posed:
Piotr is also around, wearing a Swole Patrol t-shirt and red shorts, having since grabbed a pop for himself. The upside of art is minimal homework, Russian, not so much. Gotta hit the ground running, but he keeps it fun. The large Russian gives Bobby a wave and makes his way over to the grill to fill his plate, because (surprise surprise) Piotr is hungry. He gives Jean a nod and a smile as he grabs a large pile of food.

Samuel Guthrie has posed:
Sam Guthrie has pretty much the same thing going for him as he is a younger ex student, but he has started taking some college classes and working at the police academy. This does bring him back home a bit late some evenings, but after the first week he has a bit more of an idea what times, he will be available. He comes looking for Jean. Some of the kids see him, and some start calling out about the popo, as Sam is in the police cadet uniform having not changed yet.

Jean Grey has posed:
Jean looks over at Sam as he approaches, "Going to tell me how fast I was going?" She smiles slightly, looking a tad amused at Sam showing up in uniform. Flashing a quick grin at Piotr, she gives the big Russian a wink, letting another teacher take over the drink fetching duties as she can sense Sam wants to talk about /something/. Though she doesn't pry on what that is, yet.

Bobby Drake has posed:
"Heya Piotr," he says, raising his drink in salute as Piotr goes by on his way to the grill. His gaze shifts over toward Sam when the other kids start calling out and he lifts his head in an up-nod of greeting. Then he peels himself up out of his chair to head over to the grill and take his place in line, hanging back to let others go first. He's in no particular hurry.

Piotr Rasputin has posed:
Piotr nods to Sam as he arrives, but looks to Jean and says, "Thanks for hosting, Jean," he flashes a grin and a wink before going over to the cooler to help hand out drinks as he occasionally munches from his plate. "Hey Bobby, how's it going?" Piotr asks Bobby as the other teacher stands in line, "What you wanting to drink?"

Samuel Guthrie has posed:
Sam Guthrie nods to the guys and says to Jean "Think Ah am a bit out of my jurisdiction." He jokes a bit. He will move to grab himself a drink and says "Ah wanted to check if you still needed an assistant for teaching some of the flight classes." He will tell her. "I found out what times, I could put in to help out here and should not change again this semester."

Jean Grey has posed:
Jean smiles over towards Bobby, "No Julio?" She glances back towards Sam and nods, "And that works, forward me the schedule and we'll work around that. It shouldn't be a problem. Meanwhile, stick around, have a bite to eat if you want. Decided to just have a bit of a relaxing first day, especially since it's a Monday."

She then flashes a cheerful grin to Piotr, making her way over towards him and placing a light kiss on his forehead. "Hey you, having a good time?" One eyebrow arches, just a hint, as she looks around at the various students.

Bobby Drake has posed:
"Going alright. My students took pity on me today and haven't eaten me alive yet," Bobby tells Piotr with a grin and then says, "Just a coke's good if there's one in there. Thanks, man." Then he smiles at Jean and says, "Not sure if he's coming or not. I'll shoot him another text." He grabs his plate and then moves over to one side, pulling out his phone and tapping out a quick message.

Piotr Rasputin has posed:
Piotr gives another rare grin before responding to Jean, "Da. Very much so," and quietly, "Kroshka," giving her a kiss on the forehead. He relaxes his posture and chucks Bobby a cold coke, if it's not cold enough Bobby can probably fix that himself. The Russian grins and takes a sip as he looks at the assembled people, again looking down at Jean with a smile.

Samuel Guthrie has posed:
Sam Guthrie nods and says "Ah can send you a email with it in a bit." He will smile a bit, and rubs his hand through his hair, and says "Just glad, Ah aint having to go back with the buzz cut." He jokes a bit and will look over to the food and gets a hotdog when he can. "So everything go well here today?"

Jean Grey has posed:
Jean grins back at Sam, "Well, the school didn't explode, so that's always a good day as far as I'm concerned." She chuckles, smiling back towards Piotr as he returns the kiss on the forehead, then sighs a bit, relaxing, "Now, I can unwind a little bit. Though I think enough people were tired from the first day they didn't really want to loiter..."

Bobby Drake has posed:
Bobby reaches out and catches the can when Piotr throws it to him, "Thanks!" It is true. Bobby is good for many things, but keeping drinks cold at parties is one of the fan favorites. "Seems like it," Bobby says to Sam. "How're things going with you? How are classes and the Academy?" He shrugs his shoulders and tells Jean, "Their loss. The food is great. Thanks for grilling!" He lifts up his burger and takes a bite, then sighs contentedly.

Julio Richter has posed:
Julio's return text arrived on Bobby's phone with a muted 'bwip' sound, and the man himself shows up not much later, toting an overstuffed backpack and flopping into a deck chair with a dramatic groan. "Mutant practice in the summer was bad enough. Now there are /classes/," the Latino grouses. "And there are rules against wearing spandex to class, so I have to change, PLUS there are rules against sleeping through English, so I can't even get a nap. Those naps were the only thing that made getting up at five in the morning bearable. I am going to cave in the Danger Room. No one will miss it, will they?" There's a short pause, then, inevitably: "What is cooking? That smells good."

Piotr Rasputin has posed:
Piotr nods to Jean, "Da. Kids are likely up to their own mischief, making new friends, and whatnot," he says kindly. He nods to Bobby, "Da. Probably best I did not grill, then!" Piotr may be a good painter, but he will never get a Michelin star.

Julio's arrival gets a raised brow, "Could be worse, at least you did not sleep through Russian. That only ends poorly, same for art class." He chuckles, "But there is food on grill, and soda in coolers. You have preference?"

Jean Grey has posed:
Jean grins, "And the school didn't explode Julio, count your blessings. But I know right, classes, at a SCHOOL. So unrealistic." She laughs lightly, "Just be glad you didn't have a class with /me/ teaching. I tend to deal rather... effectively, with people that fall asleep out of boredom in my classes." She grins impishly, not clarifying, but a few students look a bit spooked and hustle back inside to finish eating. "Figured we'd do one last hurrah with the grill before we have to put things away for the fall."

Bobby Drake has posed:
Bobby stands there with his burger in his mouth, watching as Julio flops into a chair and LAMENTS, and tries not to laugh with his mouth full. "You poor unfortunate soul," Bobby tells him, sounding only marginally sympathetic to his plight. "You want me to bring you a plate?" he offers, reaching for one. And if Julio does tell him what he wants, he'll throw some food on it to bring it over to him, too. Then he grins over at Piotr and says, "Do you become an objet d'art if you sleep through art class?" He doesn't want to know what happens to you if you sleep through Russian.

Julio Richter has posed:
Julio laughs, and has the decency to say, "I wasn't /bored/, I was just really, really tired," when Jean teases him with the possibility of dire psychic consequences. Then, to Piotr, he asks, "Art is in the afternoons, right? By then I'll have slept through lunch, so I should be fine. But that does mean that I've skipped lunch, so..."

He barely gets to start on his puppy-eyes at Bobby when the offer of a plate comes in. "You're my favorite person on Earth," Julio says, dropping his backpack by his chair, then clapping his hands together and waggling them, as if in grateful prayer. "I could murder a hamburger or five. And an orange soda. And fries. Lots of ketchup. Have I mentioned that you are very, very handsome, smart, and fashionable lately?"

Piotr Rasputin has posed:
"It is good the school," Piotr nods to Jean, "Though apparently over here the line marking 'too cold to swim' is a bit higher than back home!" He laughs and looks to Bobby and Julio, "It is a secret. As long as people do not sleep, they will not find out what happens." Piotr taps his forehead.

Piotr tosses over an orange soda to Julio, as he is still stationed by the pop. "Also do not skip lunch, bad for health. Must eat all meals and miss no classes."

Jean Grey has posed:
Jean laughs, "Yeah, we're not polar bears, love." She grins at Piotr, leaning in to give him another smooch... which is when her cellphone chirps. She glances down at the cellphone, sees the text, and wrinkles her nose, "Oh, shoot. Business calls." She smiles at Piotr, "I'll see you later, and No Yeeting Into The Pool!" She glances between the others, looking mock fiercely at them for a bit, then she laughs and waves, gaze lingering a bit on Piotr as she sashays her way back into the Mansion.

Bobby Drake has posed:
"Uh huh," Bobby says with a laugh as he piles up a plate for Julio with a couple of burgers loaded with the toppings he knows he likes, grabs him an orange soda, and finds him some potato chips since there aren't any fries that he can locate. That'll have to do. He shakes his head with a grin at the flood of compliments, deeply entertained. He sets the plate down next to Julio and says, "No fries, but I got you chips. You want dip to go with them?"

He then goes back toward the food table to rescue his own plate and drink that he'd left there to carry Julio's over. He grins at Piotr and says, "Well, I guess I missed my shot at finding out. I never fell asleep in class." He was certainly a pain in the ass in class, the class clown if anything, but he never fell asleep. "I don't mind swimming in the cold!" Of course, he wouldn't.

Julio Richter has posed:
Julio catches the thrown soda fairly easily, so at the very least, the physical X-men training seems to be taking hold. "If I eat lunch during lunch, when do I siesta?" he asks Piotr, pleadingly. "Can that be my fifth period class? Naptime? I didn't miss any classes, I promise -- I was just doing the thing where your head goes down, down, down, then suddenly up again, like 'I'm awake! I'm fine! I'm here!'"

He pantomimes this, and on his jerk back 'awake' bonks his head on the stretchy material forming the chair back. It's intentional, and not at all painful; he's just being dramatic again. He waves to Jean as she heads away, then cups his hands over his mouth and hollers after her, "Congratulations on being Professor Headmistress!" More quietly, he adds for the others' benefit, "I forgot to say so earlier."

He gratefully accepts the plate from Bobby, nodding his assent to the chips, and dives right in. "You two can go freeze-swimming, if you want. I'll be in the hot tub, falling asleep and then probably drowning. But it will be a warm and bubbly death and at least I won't have to get up for training at Satan's hour anymore."

Piotr Rasputin has posed:
Piotr returns the kiss to Jean and smirks, "True, but I hope the call goes well, and I make no promises on yeeting into pool." He grins and looks to the others. "Naptime is for children, Julio," Piotr jokes, looking to Bobby, "Da, probably best. But at least most students who take my classes choose to, Russian is not mandatory, and not all students take every art class. Hopefully math goes well this year!"

"Bah, just go to bed earlier!" Piotr notes to Julio, "It is like on farm. Make straw while sun shines." Idioms, not his strong suit. "But da, early training can be pain, but it helps in long run."

Julio Richter has posed:
"Siestas aren't just for kids, back in Mexico," Julio says, pouting a little. You know, like adults do. "And I would go to bed early, but things keep happening at night! Movies, or clubs, or dates, or that sort of thing. I need my social development." He takes a bite of hamburger, chews, and swallows, then continues, "Is there maybe a night shift? You know, for..." He raises his eyebrows significantly and sort of waggles his head. He's obviously talking about the X-men without actually saying 'X-men' in front of the other students.

Piotr Rasputin has posed:
"True, but balance your time and perhaps schedule naps for afternoon," Piotr says with a nod of understanding. "Though if you wish for a night shift job, perhaps that is doable. But I am not one who posts schedules for such." He takes a big swig from his bottle, "It will take time, still working on my own schedule shift with school back in full swing."

Julio Richter has posed:
"It is ... interesting to have to balance the two," Julio agrees. He doesn't sound resentful: in fact, he gets a little more food in while Piotr is speaking, and it seems to have cheered him up a bit. Possibly his moping and moaning was spurred on by a bit of hanger. "It's not bad, though. Coming back to be part of the school keeps you connected to what people are going through in their ordinary lives. Not like some people, who live on the moon or a gargoyle or a magic island, or whatever. I just wish it weren't so hard to do it and also have luxuries like sleeping and eating."

Bobby Drake has posed:
"I'm not going to let you drown in a hot tub," Bobby tells Julio. "Besides, I like the hot tub. And I can even make sure not to turn it into a tepid tub by sitting in it." He smirks just a little bit, heading that possible joke off at the pass. Then he plops down on a chair next to Julio's and takes another big bite out of his burger.

"It's going well so far," Bobby tells Piotr, "But the year is young! There is yet time for math to go horribly, horribly awry." He smiles wryly. "Going to hope that it doesn't, though. They're good kids."

He then grins at Julio and says, "We can also stop going out on dates on school nights. If /I/ can get up early and teach classes, you can get up early and go to them," with a teasing grin.

Piotr Rasputin has posed:
"Indeed, classes can turn on you like that," Piotr snaps, "Fortunately they can be righted just as quickly." He takes a seat nearby and munches on his food, "Though yes, the school keeps us grounded. It reminds us of our overall purpose." The Russian gestures with a half-eaten burger to the grounds, the building, and the students, "Our past, our present, and our future. The last being the most important." Piotr does not comment on the two's talk of date nights, taking the opportunity to devour the food mountain on his plate.

Julio Richter has posed:
Julio reaches out with one hand, palm toward Bobby's face, as if to nudge his face to point away when he suggests cutting back on their dates. He's not actually putting any force or effort into it; Bobby can easily brush him aside or laugh it off, as he chooses.

"What a horrible thing to say," Julio protests. "You take that back or I will drink coffee at you. They will just have to be sleepy dates. Testing out the mattresses at the mattress store. Picnics -- I will go under the blanket. Slow, quiet movies that I don't like. Problem solved."

He slouches a little lower in the chair and nods over at Piotr. "That makes sense. I wonder if the Professor set it up that way on purpose. Then again, he'd probably say 'you are all the future' or something wise and thoughtful like that, and I would think something stupid like 'the future needs to catch up on his history readings,' but he'd know I thought it so I might as well say it out loud." He shakes his head and goes back to work on his slowly shrinking hamburger pile.

Bobby Drake has posed:
"The school gave me a place when I didn't have one, a home, taught me how to control my abilities, and now I am doing the same for these kids," Bobby says a little more seriously, nodding to Piotr. "It keeps us going, and we keep it going, and around and around it goes."

He laughs a little when Julio reaches over to push at his face and smirks. "I see, so dates where you get to fall asleep. Got it." He shakes his head in amusement, and then says, "I think it's probably what he hoped would happen -- that we'd learn here, and then pass it on, and you know, make the world a better place for others so they could do the same -- and on and on it goes."

Piotr Rasputin has posed:
"The trouble with learning history is that instead of not repeating the past, you get to watch others repeat it, and be like Cassandra," Piotr says, at least knowing enough about Greek mythology to make the reference. He eats a brat burger next, because he can. "But Bobby is right, this place has given a lot, and has a lot more to give, and I fully trust Jean to lead it into that future," Piotr says.

When the talk shifts to the other two's dates, Piotr takes a swig and says, "Time management is all I can advise, though sleeping under picnic blanket could cause problem, especially if there are ants."

Julio Richter has posed:
"It's fine. I will burrow into the Earth, like an ant, and the ants will accept me as one of their own. I will be Julio the First, king of the ants, and change my superhero name to Ant-Man," Julio says confidently, around another mouthful of hamburger. "There are no possible problems with this plan."

He nods over at Piotr, then says, "I think Jean will do a great job. I know her better than the Professor, but I can see that they are sort of on the same wavelength. She's just younger and a little more fun. Don't tell him I said that, although he'll know. He always knows."

Bobby's comment gets a shrug from his boyfriend. "I don't know if we're making the world a better place yet, but at least we can keep saving individual people. Not a lot of places would take in a guy who accidentally blew up his hometown, even if he did promise it was an accident."

Bobby Drake has posed:
Bobby nods to Piotr and says, "I think Jean's going to do a fantastic job with it," a broad grin spreading across his face. "It's really cool, you know, to see the people you grew up with all kind of stepping up and taking their places in keeping the whole thing going in that way." He laughs then and says, "Yeah, probably want to sleep /on/ the picnic blanket rather than under it. Unless you want me to balance the picnic on top of you like those cat memes where people stack things on their sleeping cats."

"I think there's already an ant man," Bobby points out the one possible flaw with that plan (just the one). He reaches over and ruffles Julio's hair, then goes back to eating his burger, finishing it off. He smiles, "I like to believe that we are, even if it's just a tiny little bit at a time." He leans over and bumps his shoulder against Julio's.

Piotr Rasputin has posed:
"Might be a little trademark infringement," Piotr notes, nodding at Bobby's comment. "Though it is a clever plan." He has since cleaned his plate off. The Russian chuckles at Julio's comment, "I've known them both for what feels like forever," even if it has only been a few years, "And to make the world a better place you do not need to make grand gestures, just do the right thing, and even if you only save or change one life, that alone does wonders." Piotr frowns as Julio tells his story, "And I believe you. I do. You want to make the world a better place by doing the right thing, and I firmly believe you will succeed in that."

Julio Richter has posed:
"You can balance things on me until I start an earthquake and knock them all over," Julio says, doing his best reasonable voice. "Ant-Man, bah. Isn't he in jail or something? He can't sue me from jail." Julio Richter, legal expert, everyone. More hamburger: his brain obviously needs the calories.

"I hope you're both right that things are getting better, in big or small ways," he says around the food. "It's just hard to see from down here on the ground. Or even under it, with my ant army." As he chews, he thinks over Piotr's finishing comment; or chews it over, perhaps. When he's done with his bite, he answers, "I am trying, and I think I am getting better. I appreciate that you believe in me -- both of you, actually."

He flashes a smile over at Bobby. Obviously these are two very different relationships, but having people in his corner is a big deal for Julio. He still feels like an outsider most of the time, but it's good for him to be among people who don't see him that way.

Bobby Drake has posed:
Bobby can't help but chuckle a little bit as Julio claims he'll just start an earthquake and knock everything off. "Fine, fine, no stacking things." He takes a sip of his coke and leans back comfortably in his chair, poking at the remaining food on his plate slowly as he slows down, having devoured his burger pretty quickly.

"It's always harder to see when you're right in the middle of it -- and for us, when we have to constantly respond to tall the crazy stuff that's going on. Sometimes it doesn't feel like things are getting better. But for those that we do reach out and help -- the kids who have a place to learn and be themselves, the ones we rescue from bad situations and bring here, and all the other stuff.. It all matters. And nothing'll ever get better if we don't keep working on it, a little bit at a time."

He grins over at Julio and gives him a little slug on the shoulder, "I believe in you. You've got a good heart."

Piotr Rasputin has posed:
"It's easy to miss changes for the better when you're up close," Piotr says, "It is like a painting under a microscope. You only see a small part." He smiles and nods when Bobby talks, "He has it right. It may take time, but you will see it." He takes a drink, setting his empty plate aside.

Piotr leans back in the seat, "But always remember to be kind to yourself and to forgive yourself. Our road is never easy, and you should always take a chance to recover, both mentally and physically."
