Dog on the Farm
Date of Scene: 09 October 2020
Location: Jones Farm
Synopsis: No description
Cast of Characters: Donatello, Vanessa Carlysle, Kainashi, Alopex

Donatello has posed:
The past few days at the farm have been quiet. Donatello had mostly kept to himself and found ways to keep busy tending to the farm's burgeoning electrical systems. He had been up there earlier in the month, luckily, to set up electrical mains supply, but the whole thing still needed work. Presently, the turtle stands near a roughspun barn -- totally missing planks of wood, paint chipping off, the whole thing! Suspended in the air is a thick black cable, going from the barn to a nearby pole. Donatello stands underneath it, his purple eyemask knot blowing in the wind. He stares up at the cable and folds his arms across his chest. A toolbelt sits nearby.

Vanessa Carlysle has posed:
A dark blue SUV pulls up at the front of the farm. The door opens and Vanessa Carlysle climbs out and takes a moment to look around the view of the farm. She's wearing a pair of jeans and a green long-sleeve top, and pulls a leather jacket out of the car, but after second thought she tosses it back inside before closing the car door.

She begins making her way over towards where she sees Donatello standing. The woman walks with a noticeable limp. Favoring the leg that was mauled by a Rodent of Unusual Size, though it would have been easy enough to miss that event in the chaos of the battle.

As she draws near to Donatello, she gives a little wave his direction. "Hey there," she says. "Ok if I come and visit? April said you guys had relocated out here, and I wanted to stop and see if everything was ok. And also, didn't get much chance for introductions before the alarms went off," she says.

Kainashi has posed:
Kainashi had not had a good time. Turns out, unless she had a window seat the canine got pretty carsick, so she had spent most of the trip up exhaustedly dozing against either Donatello or Alopex.

At present, though, she was wearing a pair of denim overalls over a T-shirt, having no masks to flow dramatically in the breeze.

Currently she was running patrol, making sure that no one had followed from NYC and playing the perfect guard dog, which when she drops out of a tree, and onto the top of the SUV and makes a loud, metallic 'THUMP' sound behind Vanessa, and she gives a soft huff of breath. The scarred up canine head tilts.

"Uh... you're the other one, right?"

Donatello has posed:
Donatello does not wear clothing, generally, but today he has a loose-fitting hoodie with a zipper front. It's not a thick garment, but it covers up any physical difficulties he might be having. The turtle's eyes remain focused on the mains wire draped overhead and his arms grip his sides, crossing tightly over his chest. He takes a breath and turns to watch Vanessa's approach. Donatello manages a faint, rehearsed smile before lowering his head towards the ground.

Donatello takes a breath and bends down to pick up the tool belt laid on the ground near his feet. It has a typical assortment of tools: screwdrivers, wire-cutters, and things of that sort. "Hey," he replies quietly. "Yeah, of course it's okay." The turtle's voice is hesitant. He's gone from knowing one human, to two, to three, and then four all in a very, very short period of time. As Kainashi drops out of the tree and onto the SUV, Donatello's smile manages to extend a touch before he looks down to start fastening the toolbelt around his waist.

Vanessa Carlysle has posed:
Vanessa Carlysle glances over as she hears the sound of Kainashi landing on the car. She gives a slight wince, eyes on the roof of the SUV as if wondering how many dents or scratches there may be. "I suppose after bullet holes, a few dents won't probably register," she comments to herself under her breath, though Donatello can likely hear it up close, and with Kainashi's hearing, she might catch it as well.

Vanessa raises a hand to wave towards Kainashi. "Yes. The one with the bow," she says. "Assuming you meant the other one with April? I'm Vanessa," she offers. "I haven't really gotten all of your names. Or, even where I've gotten names, I'm not quite sure who goes with which one yet," she says. "So apologies if I mess up there."

Kainashi has posed:
Kainashi's ears flick back at Vanessa's statement, but she does look down, and then carefully hops off the top of the SUV and hits the ground.

"Well. Donnie's the tall one in the purple. Leonardo is the serious one in the blue. Raphael's the angry one in the red, an' Michelangelo is the loud one." KAinashi states, cracking a bit of a grin. "Alopex is the white fluffy one, I'm Kai an' I'm the scarred up one," she states, pointing indeed to her scarred up face, "an' Splinter's the calm one who will bring you tea *when you least expect it*." she states, going around, and then she counts on her fingers.

"Oh. And Casey, but he's a human. He's around."

Donatello has posed:
The Tall One In The Purple gives a brief wave with one of his hands before he takes a couple of steps towards the pole feeding the power line to the barn. A hand is brought down to the belt and produces a utility knife. As Kainashi and Vanessa continue their introductions, Donatello unfolds the utility knife and begins to cut into the thick cable going up the pole.

For now, Donnie is content to be quiet and continue with the work on the pole. Once the utility knife gets through the cable, Donnie lowers it a few feet and makes another cut. The knife goes back into his tool belt before Donatello wraps a fist around the section of cable he's isolated and he gives it a sudden, violent tug. His eyes close tightly and his mouth opens to expose his teeth. It's unclear if it's a gesture of rage, strength, or pain.

The piece of cable is tossed on the ground before Donnie silently walks away from the pair, moving towards the Turtle Van parked inside the van. Moody!

Vanessa Carlysle has posed:
Vanessa Carlysle gives Kainashi a little wave and a smile when Kai looks at the SUV, a gesture that together suggests it's ok. And indeed, Vanessa seems in a good enough mood. "Donnie tall and purple. Leonardo serious and blue. Raphael angry red, that pairing makes sense I suppose, and Michelangelo loud," she repeats to get them all straight. "So, you guys tend to stick with your favorite colors then, I gather?" she asks.

"And Kai. And Alopex. Nice to meet you Kai," she says. "Yes, had met Casey before. April and I have known each other for awhile," Vanessa adds.

She watches Donnie work, and spots that expression as he exerts himself. "Anything I can help with there? I noticed you seemed like you were recovering from something before all of that happened. I can't imagine it was much help there," she says. "I just got over a few bruised ribs myself."

She looks back to Kai, and then to Donatello again. "So your parents must have been big Renaissance fans I guess?" she asks. "April really hasn't told me a lot about you all. Just that you were friends. Good people. And faced some threats. Mentioned the Foot. I've run into them once before," she says.

Kainashi has posed:
"Pretty much wraps it up--" Kai replies to Vanessa -- and then she blinks. She turns to Donatello, uncharacteristically quiet -- and walking away! She frowns a moment, looks to Vanessa, and giving a wan, embarrassed, uneasy smile, she turns and makes her way to Donatello, trying to get ahead of him.

"-- are you all right? How can I help? Do you need me to lift anything? I'm good at lifting!" she comments quietly, those little patches of white on her face rising up with her ears coming forward.

She is very purposefully moving herself into Donatello's way.

Donatello has posed:
"Yeah, I guess he was," Donatello replies, joylessly. Splinter had named them all after Renaissance artists, after all. The turtle stuffs his hands into the front pockets of his hooded sweatshirt and continues towards the entrance of the barn and the Turtle Van parked inside.

Donatello takes a large step to the side so he can avoid walking into Kainashi, but also avoid stopping. He gives her a smile -- this one is much more genuine than the rehearsed, artificial smile given to Vanessa, earlier. "I know you are, Kai," Donatello replies quietly before lowering his eyes. He watches the ground in front of his feet as he makes his way back to the Turtle Van, avoiding her eyes. "But, I don't need any help lifting anything. I just need to get some new romex cable from the Van so I can fix the pole."

He's just as bad at lying as Kainashi is, even without a tail to betray his intentions.

The back of the Turtle Van had already been open, as Donatello had been shuffling supplies from it for the better part of the afternoon. He leans forward to rummage through the storage boxes near the edge of the cargo area.

Vanessa Carlysle has posed:
Vanessa's past occupation left her with a bit of a knack for reading people. The body language and expressions of both Donatello and Kainashi register with her. As Donatello moves away and Kainashi goes after him, Vanessa motions towards the barn. "I'll just go take a little look around," she says, making space for them to be able to talk. "I haven't been on too many farms before," she says, supplying an explanation for that.

With that she turns to give them some time and space, moving over to glance at the state of the barn, and then moving along it to get a look out at the fields that stretch out away from the stone farmhouse, this set covered with old corn stalks that are already harvested, dried out and looking like something out of a good Halloween movie. She leans down to break off a long stem of grass with seeds on the end, placing it in the corner of her lips as she walks along, hands going into her back pockets.

Alopex has posed:
Is it too cliche for a ninja to be hanging around in the upper structure of a barn? It's too bad if it is, because Alopex has been there for a while. Meditating? Scanning the horizon? Watching thec coming and going of anyone else around the farm? ... Well, honestly, it's a bit of ALL THREE.

When Donatello and Kainashi wander in this time, however, the ceiling-fox actually glances down. Sure, Donnie had been coming and going a lot, but she just felt like paying attention to ... something else. Hmm.

Kainashi has posed:
Kai's ears flick back a moment, then she practically dances about to get back into Donatello's way as Vanessa investigates the outside of the barn.

"I'll carry it for you! So you can concentrate on getting it up. I mean, I c an climb too, the whole 'also a ninja-though-not-as-good-a-ninja' thing?" she counters, her squeaky voice ringing through the barn. "I can remove the outside! I don't even need tools, 'cause my teefs!" she states, lifting the edge of her lip to purposefully show Donatello that she does, in fact, have teeth.

Donatello has posed:
Donatello lets out the air held back in his lungs. "I'm okay, Kai," he replies gently. "Thank you." He takes a spool of romex from the boxes in the back of the Turtle Van and takes another breath. His eyes stare at the wooden spool wound with the thick, black cable. After several seconds of staring at the spool, the turtle shifts his gaze down to watch Kainashi and her eagerness. He opens his mouth, as if to protest, but he doesn't. There's a hitch in his breath before he sets the wooden spool back down into the cargo area of the van. Donatello's shoulders relax, his eyes lower shyly, and a smile forms on his face again. A real one.

"Okay," he agrees, looking up from the ground to point the smile at Kainashi. "Let's fix the pole." The spool is picked up and held with one hand, tucked under his arm.

"Thanks, Kai," he adds softly, totally unaware that they're being spied on.

Vanessa Carlysle has posed:
Vanessa Carlysle has no idea the fox is there. She wanders along one side of the long barn, reaching the corner to get a view of other parts of the farm. The large field that's bordered with fencing holds a few cows, and Vanessa walks over towards them. She stops at the fence, looking at one of the animals a few feet away that is grazing on some of the grass.

"Hello there. Bessie. For lack of a name," Vanessa tells the cow. "Do they name cows? I guess maybe it depends on how many there are. No collar anyway," she says, revealing how little she knows about farming. The cow ignores her, grazing away, and eventually Vanessa moves on. Being careful not to step in any cow patties, thought hose seem to mostly be in the field itself, or on the little path that has been worn between the field's gates, and the barn.

Alopex has posed:
The white fox is mostly observing right now. There's no need to interrupt people in the lives they're leading right now. Don and Kai are being.. well, adorable. Vanessa is letting them have some time to continue with the adorableness, and Alopex isn't at all thinking about dropping down to scare the life out of brother purple. Why would -anyone- think that anyway? It's not like she's evil! She's just in the rafters. . watching. Without a word. And has been for a while. ... IT DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING.

Kainashi has posed:
"... any time, Donnie." Kainashi replies gently, and she hoists anything he would ask her to, and follows behind. Donatello -- until she leeeaaans her head back, looks up at the rafters with a confused expression, and then tottles back behind Donatello. She is, in truth, seventy percent adorable, twenty percent badassery, and ten percent dumb as a sack of rocks.

It lends to a critcally high adorable score. She's also probably .75 percent hamburger after eating last night.

She follows behind Donatello, and she inquires cheerily.

"So, what's the wire for? Super secret stuff? Intel collecting? OH! Is it for a slushie machine?"

Donatello has posed:
"No," Donnie replies quietly, giving Kainashi a brief glance over his shoulder. "I'm trying to make sure the farm has power. By the time Mikey gets here, I'm sure he's going to be wondering about the video games." There's a pause. "Wait, slushie machine?"

He turns to face forward again, trying his best to fight the smile that wants to appear on his features. Puppy love is a heck of a thing, but Donatello is trying to remain loyal to his bad mood. It's hard when Kai's around.

He hadn't asked her to carry anything, though perhaps he should have. She's stronger than him exponentially and the turtle's shell was in critical condition. The loose sweatshirt did a good job keeping that secret hidden. "Come on, Vanessa," he calls out to the unfamiliar human as they pass by. "Come help with this pole." His words lack the uncontrollable joy from when he was talking to Kai, but it's an improvement from earlier.

Vanessa Carlysle has posed:
Vanessa Carlysle is walking along the fence line, watching some of the chickens who are scurrying around in the farm yard, when she hears Donatello call. She looks up and over that way, and then moves over to join them. The perching Alopex still unnoticed.

The young woman walks over to them, giving them both a small smile. "Sure thing. Just tell me how to help," she says. "Working on running power out there?" she asks of the barn, as she glances up at the pole overhead. "I've managed to not electrocute myself while dealing with the bad wiring in my old place, at least," she says as she eyes the pole and the distance to the barn.

Alopex has posed:
Spotted? No. Maybe. She couldn't tell Kai and nearly looked straight at her but didn't really have any kind of follow up, so, shrug. It's fine. She watches them wander out, but after hearing mention of the 'pole', the fox decides to move.

When folk arrive at said pole, it seems the fox is already there, sitting at the base in a lotus-like sitting position. Her legs aren't exactly human-like. When anyone draws near, she offers a polite wave as she glances toward them.

Kainashi has posed:
"Donatello's pretty much the smartest person I know. He made an aye-aye! ... ah ache-ai?" Kainashi continues, singing some praises for poor Donatello. "-- a fake person smart thing, not really smart yet, but he's learning!" she states in a more friendly fashion, apparently satisfied by something that she doesn't has to be on total guard mode now.

She probably picked up stuff on her own, far more stuff than Donatello probably needed but she might have grabbed just to be helpful. Including a very confused chicken.

Who buck-cawk!s indignantly, and flies away as soon as she's set down.

"Hi 'Pex!" the canine greets the fox, casually, as if it's just a thing.

Donatello has posed:
Donatello's green cheeks briefly fade to brown as his hands busy themselves with the wooden spool held under his arm. The smartest person she knows can translate. "An AI," the turtle replies softly. There's a pause. "Sort of."

"This whole place didn't have electrical service when Casey told me about it," he explains to Vanessa, the brown in his cheeks fading away. "I was able to handle that a few weeks ago, luckily, but the barn needs to be connected. There was a hook-up but the cable oxidized." A surprisingly well-informed turtle.

Donatello winces and leans down to start unrolling the spool. He straightens up and takes a deep breath. Just as his lungs empty and the turtle begins to relax...ALOPEX. Donatello cries out as his muscles all tense in surprise. He leans forward and leans his elbows against his thighs.

"Hi, Alopex," he greets, meekly, as he catches his breath. One of his hands moves to gently touch the side of his sweatshirt to check for any wetness from where his shell split the first time. His eyes rise to look at the fox, worry forming on his features.

Vanessa Carlysle has posed:
Vanessa Carlysle moves over to join Donatello as she notices his difficulty with the spool of cable. She gives a little start at Alopex being there when she could have sworn a few moments ago that wasn't the case. "Oh, hello," she says towards Alopex. "I'm Vanessa," she offers, figuring her name might not have survived in anyone's memories after the surge of rats into the lair happened.

"I can get that if you want, Donatello," she says of the cable. "Best thing for a hurt... for hurts, is some rest," she says. As if she isn't visibly limping as she helps unroll the cable over towards the pole.

Alopex has posed:
The pupper gets a smile, Donnie gets his wave, Vanessa gets the greeting nod. "Cable for the pole?" she asks, pointing upward. "Good ears.." she admits with a far too feral grin before she stands. "I can help too if you like."

Kainashi has posed:
"Alopex, the white fluffy one." Kainashi states as she motions to the fox, "Noticably not a turtle." she smiles, and then she turns to Donatello, and she taps him on his shoulder.

"... might not be the brightest crayon in the cookie jar... but if you tell me what to do, ... let me help. Please. I'm not... I'm not as hurt as you guys." she pleads to the turtle, but might just be loud enough that Vanessa could hear it. The super-strength doggo rubs the back of her head a moment.

"... Donnie, your shell's still healing. I've seen Animal Planet, it's connected to your spine."

Donatello has posed:
"Oh, I've had enough rest this past week, I guess," Donatello replies to Vanessa, though he sounds a bit unsure. The turtle rises to his feet, managing to catch up on his breathing. "Though maybe it looks like you should have some?" He points a squat finger at her leg.

The canine gets a smile from Donatello. "Animal Planet had an episode about turtles?" he questions with a smile. "Must have been pretty boring." Truly, without a mutation and ninja training, turtles can be DULL. Donatello reaches out with a hand and then pauses. Alopex is given a worried glance before the turtle retracts his hand.

Nevertheless, the smile lingers while the turtle explains the plan.

"The old cable is down, but we need to get the new one up," he explains. Donatello points to the top of the barn. "Kai, maybe you could climb up there with one end of the cable?" He looks up at Alopex. "And maybe you could hold the other end of the cable up there on the pole?"

Donatello stops the plan right there and looks up at the barn and considers the climb he'd need to take to get up there. "Kai," he wonders. "Do you know how to solder?"

Vanessa Carlysle has posed:
Vanessa Carlysle gives a warm grin to Donatello. "When hurt, rest doesn't work like that. It's only enough rest when you're healed," she says. "Trust me. I get lectured on this regularly," she says with a good-natured sigh.

She glances down her leg. "Just some scratches and bites. A few stitches and... three more rabies shots to come, and I'm good as new," she tells Donatello, doing basically the same thing as him as she marginalizes her own health situation.

Vanessa's phone rings and she looks at it. "Speaking of the doctor. Probably wondering if we managed to catch 'the dog' that bit me," she says. She looks to everyone else, assuring they are ok without her. It seems like Donatello has it arranged, in a way not likely to injure himself worse. She steps away to take the call.

Alopex has posed:
"Ah, yes, I suppose I am the white fluffy one. As for the help... "Yes, please, Don, a little help from your friends isn't a bad thing. I'd recommend letting us. Especially with the current circumstance." If she means his shell or just the trip to the farm, she isn't saying. Let purple stew on that.

Kainashi has posed:
"... but she wasn't bitten by a -- /I/ didn't bite her -- I don't /think/ I bit--" Kai blinks a moment, then she pauses, and looks down at the cable she's worrying in her hands, then back up at the group around her, and then back to Donatello. Her head tilts, one ear rising up. The one reminding everyone who can read Kanji that she's useless.

    "What's a solder?"

Donatello has posed:
Donatello gives Vanessa a nod as she goes to tend to her phone call. Her phone gets a brief, wistful look before he glances down at Kainashi. "You didn't," he assures. "She told her doctor that a dog bit her so she could get a rabies treatment without saying there are mutant rats in the sewers." He manages a faint smile at the end, though it's clearly false.

The turtle nods up at Alopex, agreeing, but then Kainashi asks about soldering. Donatello looks up at the barn, once again, and imagines having to climb up there to solder the end of the cable. He winces.

"I could teach you," he says to Kainashi, smiling. Before she has a chance to inquire further, the turtle lowers himself to his knees and unfolds the utility knife from the tool belt. He begins to make six small pieces out of the original, broken cable that was sitting there in the grass. Six practice pieces: two for each of them.

Kainashi has posed:
"... rabies shots are awful. That's probably the *one* thing I can thank the Foot for." Kainashi mutters. "... even if it was in the stomach after --" she pauses, glancing about "Ah... nevermind. SO--" she drops to her knees in the overalls, and purses her lips as she watches Donatello cut the small pieces out of the original cable, and she purses her lips.

"What is soldering? Is it hard?"

Donatello has posed:
Meanwhile, Donatello removed the insulation from the ends of the practice wires using a pair of wire strippers. His hands move through the task like it's something he's done a million times. "Everything's hard the first time we try it," Donnie explains with a smile, looking over at Kainashi as he strips the insulation.

"/This/ is solder," Donatello explains, cheerfully. The turtle holds up a tiny spool of lead-based solder. "It's a metal alloy that we can use to fix up the wire."

Donatello grabs two of the practice wires and places them end-to-end. He twists their exposed wires together, forming a single wire. "So, to fix the wire, we twist the ends together, like /this/," he describes with a smile, watching Kai's reaction to this. "And then..."

From the toolbelt, Donatello produces a cordless soldering iron. It looks new -- totally unlike the usual garbage Donatello uses! "This is a butane-powered soldering iron," he explains, his eyes flickering towards Kainashi again. "Splinter..." He pauses and takes a breath, briefly looking away. "...gave this to me for my last birthday." The turtle presses the soldering iron's power button, which begins blinking to indicate that it's heating up. "The end gets really, really hot, so we need to be careful. We absolutely cannot touch the end."

"Cannot touch the end," the turtle repeats, gravely, before allowing his smile to return. "So, first we heat up the wires by touching them with the hot end..."

Donatello places the soldering iron against the twisted cables, leaves it there for a moment...

"...And, while we're heating it, we can touch the cables with the solder...And....this happens..."

And, like so, Donatello solders the wires together. The solder from the spool quickly liquefies and flows into the twisted strands. Without thinking, Donnie blows some air on the solder joint, trying to push the fumes away.

The turtle pulls the soldering iron back and presents the mended cable to Kainashi. "Wanna try?" he asks with a noticeable eagerness, hoping that he can share something he cares about with someone he cares about.

Kainashi has posed:
Kainashi sits down in the grass, her eyes set on Donatello's hands as he begins to solder the wire, showing step-by-step.

HEr head tilts, and when her attention begins to wander, her right hand reaches out, and plucks a stalk of grass. And with that stalk, she doodles against the ground, occupying her need to move as she pays attention to the soldering actions.

"... so, rule number one, don't touch the tip." she sniffs the air. "It evens /smells/ hot."

And she grabs her two practice wires. She looks at them, and gently twists them together, making sure they're nice and tight.

Kai holds her hand out for the soldering wire, turning to look up at Donatello with a smile.

"Good so far?" she questions with a smile.

Donatello has posed:
Donatello nods his head. "Yes. Rule one, don't touch the tip," he agrees. He sets his mended cable down and watches Kainashi's work, carefully. "Looks good!" he exclaims with a return smile. As Kainashi holds her hand out, the turtle puts the solder spool into it. With a quick twirl, Donatello spins the soldering iron so that the handle is facing Kainashi and the hot tip is pointed in his direction. He holds it out for her to take when ready.

"The key here is to use the tip to heat the wire and then touch the solder onto the hot wire," the turtle explains softly.

Kainashi has posed:
Kai takes a deep breath, and oh-so-very-gingerly, with the same care that she holds her pencils, she hesitantly accepts the soldering iron from Donatello. She holds her breath a moment, breathing out, and she closes her eyes.

She stretches her other hand a moment, and brings the iron close to the twisted wires, and her hand shakes a little bit.

    "... I don't want to break it."

Donatello has posed:
"So don't," Donatello replies gently. He looks across at Kainashi and smiles. His words suggest the utmost of confidence in her ability to handle his birthday soldering iron. In fact, Donatello tucked his hands under his legs -- a symbolic gesture.

The turtle leans forward to watch closely, his smile bright.

Kainashi has posed:
Kainashi's ears draw back, her tail lowering behind her as she breathes out, and she touches the hot end of the iron to the wires, heating them up. She takes a deep breath, waiting for the smell of hot metal, before she brushes the tip of the solder to the heated wires.

The blob of solder on the wire was a bit bigger than what was really needed, but it was there.

Donatello has posed:
Donatello leans forward and purses his lips. He gently blows on the solder joint to get the fumes off into the wind and then leans back. "Excellent!" Donatello exclaims, smiling. "You did it." Trying to connect it to something from the past, Donatello adds: "Soldering is how the Shell Phones were made."

With all that done, Donatello points a finger up at the barn. "So, if you can get up there, you can solder the wire to one in the barn, right?" he asks with a smile.

Kainashi has posed:
"Wait, wait, was that an 'if' I can get up there?" Kai gives a bright grin, her eyes narrowing as she hops to her feet. "No problem. I can solder that to the barn! I could do it with one hand tied behind my back -- ... but I wont, 'cause that's dangerous and I don't want to break your iron."

Donatello has posed:
Donatello grins back before taking a breath. Wincing, he brings himself to his feet. "So, it's a plan then. You'll go up there and solder the wire...but without a hand behind your back, then?" he asks, smiling. A finger is pointed at the barn as the turtle watches for Kainashi's enthusiasm for it.

Kainashi has posed:
"Consider it done. I'll be very careful with the iron... ah... for both its and my sakes. Alopex would be pretty mad if I couldn't spar against everyone because I burned my hand." Kainashi states, giving the brightest grin.
