When Shopping Goes Awry
Date of Scene: 12 March 2020
Location: Chinatown
Synopsis: Glaive and Iceman run into some thugs on the streets of Chinatown and put a halt to their escape.
Cast of Characters: Bobby Drake, Jason Wylde

Bobby Drake has posed:
It's a Wednesday evening in Chinatown and lights hang from above the myriad open storefronts with their vast array of items. Market stalls sell fruit and vegetables and some meats that aren't entirely identifiable. There are knock-off perfumes and jewelry and clothing. There are people wandering everywhere, shopping, browsing, or merely congregating in the streets.

Bobby sometimes wanders around Chinatown when he's in town during the week attending classes at Empire State. And tonight is one of those nights. He strolls along in a pair of jeans and a light grey sweater that doesn't look like it should be warm enough for the chill March weather, and some navy blue chucks. For the moment, things seem pretty chill.

Jason Wylde has posed:
A former ESU student on his own right, Jason Wylde lives in the area, not too far from Chinatown in a penthouse in Manhattan. He'll come down here and get food to cook for himself, or tonight, he's not feeling like cooking so he's actually looking to order something to take home.

At the moment he's just got on a black leather jacket and a pair of jeans, doesn't look like anything too crazy. He's standing at one of the stalls, considering his options.

Bobby Drake has posed:
It starts with some shouting, which isn't too surprising for the area. Whenever there are lots of people gathered in tight quarters there are bound to be disagreements from time to time. Shouting isn't all that unusual. The shouting continues to grow, however, and people begin to take notice as a trio of men come running down the street and fire weapons back into the crowd behind them. The gunfire sends shrieks from the nearby shoppers who go ducking into the stalls, into alleys, behind anything that they can find for cover, chaos ensuing.

It's the sound of gunfire that has Bobby spinning around from where he stands, quickly trying to take stock of the situation -- who are the shooters? Who are they shooting /at/, and what's the status of the crowd. He spots the shooters by the parting wave of pedestrians attempting to escape. Behind them, two men and a woman give chase, and they draw their own weapons, taking shots at the escapees.

Jason Wylde has posed:
The sounds of gunfire is one that's unmistakable at this range. Jason turns his head to look in the direction of the men firing into the crowd, and then others firing back at the men running away. Great, just what the crowd needs, a running gun battle.

Jason is quick to move away, running into a side alleyway as the crowds disperse, figuring that he's going to be able to get a nice distraction so he can swap to his outfit. Once he's out of his street clothes and dressed for superheroing, he forms a knife in his hand and throws it up into the air, porting up to it, and then tossing it down to the roof above the street, teleporting onto the roof.

From here he should have a good enough vantage point over the two groups shooting at each other, "Come on, get out of the way. Damn civilians.." He mutters as he waits for an openining.

Bobby Drake has posed:
The civilians seem more than happy to comply with getting out of the way, whether that's their intention or not. They seem more concerned with not getting shot than anything else -- a healthy sense of self-preservation prevailing. The crowd parts and from Jason's vantage point on the roof he can clearly see where the three escapees are headed. There's an old van with its door open and motor running waiting to pick them up at the end of the alley nearby.

Bobby starts a run toward the pursued and pursuers, and suddenly out from beneath his hand shoots a stream of ice that forms a ramp along which he slides up along the side of one building, over the street and the heads of the fleeing, coming up on the pursuers from behind, his entire form becoming translucent, a rapidly moving statue of ice as he closes in.

Jason Wylde has posed:
"Well that's something." Glaive says from his position on the roof, as he spots the van. Perfect. He jumps off the rooftop, and throws his knife through the air. He teleports to it, so he's directly over the van, and then the knife vanishes into a puff of smoke, replaced by a massive two handed claymore. He twists and throws the blade down into the hood of the van, intent on penetrating it with the blade, making sure the van isn't going anywhere.

Of course now he's stuck in midair, and he can't fly, so he starts to fall downwards, jacket billowing behind him as he waits. He has to time this right or he'll hit the van hard.

Bobby Drake has posed:
The claymore crashes through the hood of the van and steam hisses up through it as shouts of surprise ring out from inside. The driver comes stumbling out of the van with a gun drawn and points it at Glaive, taking a shot but missing wildly due to the fact he wasn't expecting the guy to be falling mid-air. He'd thought he was /on/ the van already. Another guy inside comes stumbling out through the open door and goes to take a shot at Glaive.

The three running for the van stumble in their flight, seeing some guy appear out of nowhere and suddenly slamming a claymore into their van. "The fuck!?" can be heard coming from down the alley. But there are others still pursuing them, and so they barrel ahead onward.

Bringing up the rear, Bobby sails around the corner of the building just in time to watch the situation with the van. Both icy brows go up and he grins. "Uh oh, guys, looks like your ride isn't going anywhere. And neither are you." Since Glaive has that end of the alley under control, he begins to form an ice wall that seals off their retreat, making a very slippery surface and hemming them in.

Jason Wylde has posed:
Yeah being up in the air tends to throw off people's aim. The sword vanishes from the engine of the van, and Glaive pulls out a kukri blade and throws it sideways, teleporting to it, and using the change in momentum to roll to a stop in front of the van.

He rises back up to his feet, and aims the knife at the guy with the gun that was driving the van, "I can hit you with this before you get another shot off, so drop it."

He seems to be entirely serious, because he is showing no hestitation. When the ice guy shows up, he is a bit surprised at having an actual meta here, but he's not gonna say no to the help either.

Bobby Drake has posed:
Iceman draws the attention of those toward the rear, who take a couple of shots at him, which he dodges without too much trouble. He sails along the side of the building, that ramp of ice providing him a slick surface as he makes his way toward the van.

The guy who saw the claymore come out of nowhere rethinks his life choices and he just bails and runs, dropping his gun on the ground. He isn't blocked by the van, so has a clear exit to the street, and he takes advantage of that, leaving the others to deal with the meta and the blade guy on their own.

The guy who came out of the van who did not see what was going on, however, fires off another shot at Glaive, this one looking like it might hit, since he's had time to take aim and all. And the three escapees are closing fast, still pursued.

Jason Wylde has posed:
Glaive sees the second shooter, and he ducks, bringing his knife changing into a shield in his hand, and he blocks the shot with it. Then not wanting to switch weapons, he throws the shield like a cut-rate Captain America, hurling it at the guy who just shot at him.

The idea is to either knock the gun out of his hand, or at the very least stumble him enough to close the distance and engage him in melee combat, which is where Glaive specializes.

Bobby Drake has posed:
The shield flies through the air and smacks the guy right in the wrist. Ow. His gun goes flying and he pulls a knife but let's face it, he's no match for Glaive, who should be able to take him down easily without too much trouble. The larger issue are the six others who are rapidly approaching the van and the pair. And they still have their guns.

That's when Bobby creates a sheet of ice beneath their feet as they are running and suddenly all six go sliding every which way. Some manage to grab onto a dumpster or the wall, or a nearby fire escape, while two fall on the ground and slip around in an effort to get back up. That doesn't mean that they don't keep shooting, however. Three shots hit the van. A fourth clips Bobby's shoulder, sending shards of ice flying through the air and causing him to mutter in frustration.

Jason Wylde has posed:
The shield vanishes after it hits, and Glaive reforms it in his hand, moving in on the guy with the kinfe. With his training in hand to hand combat, he's able to whack the knife away from the guy, and then bash him in the head with the shield, and knock him out.

Now of course he has to deal with all the gunfire. He moves around from the side of the van and spots the shooters and the shunk taken out of the meta, "Drop the weapons and get on the ground!" He yells at the group, shield between himself and them.

Bobby Drake has posed:
"When has that ever worked?" Iceman asks Glaive as he comes sliding around the wall nearby and comes to a stop, giving him a little skeptical look that might be hard to read on his translucent features.

True to form, the six remaining attackers do not drop their weapons, though two are on the ground -- through no control of their own. They just can't get up from the ice as they slide around. The other four, however, start to fire a few shots at Glaive and Iceman once more.

Two try to rush Glaive and his shield deciding to try to knock him over, shield and all, while the other two take shots at Iceman.

Jason Wylde has posed:
"It's worth a try." Glaive replies to Iceman, before leaning behind the shield. As the two rush him, he lowers his right hand down and forms a club in it, waiting until the first opponent hits his shield, before swinging around with the club and trying to bash him with it, trying to knock the gun out of his hands, "I'm starting to get pissed off at these guys. Go down!"

Bobby Drake has posed:
One of the two gets clocked with the club and goes down, knocked out cold. His buddy, however, gets a grip on Glaive's arm with the shield and tries to keep the shield between him and the club all the while attempting to pull Glaive down.

There are, however, two more advancing and taking shots at them, so Iceman slides away from Glaive so they're not shooting at him while he tries to deal with the guy on his shield. Suddenly there are two ice batons, one in each hand, and he brings one down on one of the guys' guns, knocking it out of his hand, and brings the other around in a swift crack against the other one's temple, dropping him to the ground.

Jason Wylde has posed:
Glaive goes down, the guy landing on top of him and the shield, and pinning him down to the ground. At least he managed to take one of the guys out. He grunts and tries to get a good hit on the guy, but being held down is making it harder than you'd think.

At least it seems Iceman is having a better time of it. Glaive suddenly gets an idea, of course. He throws the baton away from himself, where it clatters against the van and falls to the ground. He then teleports to it, disappearing from under the guy and appearing next to the baton. Now free from his attacker, he kips back up onto his feet, both weapons vanishing, "Come on then. Lets do this like men."

Bobby Drake has posed:
Iceman has had a bit of practice, but then he was a very young kid when he became an X-man. And so he manages to hold his own pretty well, checking over his shoulder to make sure Glaive is doing okay. He watches him teleport and grins a little, "That's a pretty neat trick." But he still has a guy with a knife that is trying to carve him into an ice sculpture, and those other two on the ground are starting to finally find purchase in the melting ice. It won't be long before they're back on their feet.

The guy on the ground on top of what was Glaive's shield manages to drag himself to his feet and launches himself at Glaive again. He's going to do it like something. Whether that's men, or like a rabid angry weasel is up for debate, but he's pissed and determined.

Jason Wylde has posed:
Glaive waits, expecting the guy to attack and when he does, moves in on him, lowering his shoulder and hitting the guy under his arm, grabbing it and twisting to launch him into the van, following it up with a knee strike to him while he's upside down in order to put him out for the count.

With that guy taken care of, it seems all they have left is the two on thin ice. Glaive opts to take the one on the left, forming a throwing knife, which he throws out and it hits the ground in front of the guy, missing him by about two feet. Glaive then starts running and uses that forward momentum when he teleports to appear in front of the crook, dropping back to kick him with both feet and send the both of them skidding along the ice. Should leave just one more for Iceman to finish off.

Bobby Drake has posed:
Glaive takes out another one of his attackers, and adds to the pile of unconscious guys on the ground. With Glaive taking out the last of the slip sliders, that leaves one woman who has managed to climb onto the fire escape and get her gun trained on Iceman. He slides on up toward her, the pillar of ice rising to bring him up to the same level as she takes her shot. It clips him in the arm, sending another shower of ice shards flying, but he catches up with her and pulls her off of the fire escape, dragging her back over to the van after freezing her gun in her hand. "Stay," he tells her as he turns to look back toward Glaive. Seeing that he has his attacker under control, he turns back to the woman in the van and keeps an eye on her while the sound of sirens approach.

"Time to go," he says, and drags the van door shut, freezing the handle so that it won't open up. Then he turns toward Glaive and says, "C'mon, I'll buy you a drink. Let's let the cops clean this up."

Jason Wylde has posed:
"That sounds like a plan to me." Glaive replies, as he hops back up to his feet, heading after Iceman as the more experienced hero leads the way away from the cops. This is definitely something for him to learn, how to best deal with the arrival of the police. Or more importantly how not to be there when that happens.

Bobby Drake has posed:
Iceman holds out a hand to Glaive and says, "Come on.." He then creates that slick ice-slide that will take them away from the scene quickly, simply melting and evaporating away without leaving a trace, or footprints. If Glaive takes his hand, then he pulls him along, down the back alleys for a ways until they come to the end of one. If not, then Bobby just lets him keep up as best he can until he reaches the end of the alley and comes to a stop.

Jason Wylde has posed:
Glaive does grab the hand, letting Iceman escort them away down the alleyway and somewhere safely away from where the firefight had gone down, "Gotta say. That's one interesting way to travel." Plus it probably has a hell of a lot longer range than his teleportation does.

Bobby Drake has posed:
It's a very slippery way to travel, but Iceman manages to get Glaive to their destination in one piece and without either of them sliding off. He grins once they come to a stop and then there's a kind of melting as he shifts back from the ice-man into just Bobby once more. The ice seems to evaporate around him and then he's standing there in his regular clothes again. "I like it. Yours is pretty handy, too. Popping around like that. I know a guy who can do something like that." He then offers a hand to shake and says, "Thanks for the help back there."

Jason Wylde has posed:
"You're welcome. Didn't honestly expect someone else would be in the area.." He looks back down the alley, "Any idea what that was all about? Didn't exactly have time to interview them.."

Bobby Drake has posed:
"Oh, I come down here from time to time and wander around after class sometimes. Sometimes I grab food, sometimes pick up a few little things. I go to Empire State," Bobby says as he gestures with a thumb back over his shoulder in that general direction. Then he shakes his head, "No idea. Just knew that I don't want those guys out on the street randomly having a shootout on a street full of pedestrians. Figure the details will be something for the cops to work out. There were plenty of witnesses to tell them what happened." And to point out that the Iceman was there, but he'll deal with that later during the inevitable questioning.

Jason Wylde has posed:
"Yeah I suppose that part's not my job, huh?" Glaive asks, "Not that this is my job either, uh." He considers for a second, "I used to go to Empire also, for what it's worth. Good to see the school is still producing good students."

Bobby Drake has posed:
"Oh yeah? What'd you go for?" Bobby asks, since this is a perfectly normal conversation to have after beating up some bad guys in an alley. He offers a hand then and says, "Bobby, by the way. Or Iceman. Either one. It's not much of a secret." He then glances back over his shoulder and shrugs, "I mean, it can be. But cops tend to get annoyed when people go all vigilante rather than letting them handle everything. But if we'd waited for the cops to show up, they would have been long gone so.. you pick your battles with how much you want to deal with them."

Jason Wylde has posed:
"Business management." Glaive replies, before he takes the offered hand, and shakes it, "Uh. We'll just stick with Glaive for now." He replies. Iceman may have heard of a hero going by that name active in the 80s and early 90s, or even one that worked with the allies in WW2. This is clearly NOT the same guy, considering the age difference. He's no Captain America.

Bobby Drake has posed:
Bobby Drake grins and says, "Mathematics," and doesn't seem phased at all by the fact that Glaive gives him his superhero name. "Nice to meet you, man. I'm sure I'll see you around from time to time. But, I suppose I should head back. I've got some studying to do before tomorrow. Stay safe, huh?" He then gives Glaive a little salute, and begins to head back toward the school.
