Noir Movie Night at the Outsiders
Date of Scene: 23 January 2021
Location: The Robin's Roost - Chelsea
Synopsis: The gang gather to watch Dirty Harry and talk about the latest missadventures. Problems will not all be solved with a .44. Probably.
Cast of Characters: Conner Kent, Phoebe Beacon, Rose Wilson, Laura Kinney, Dick Grayson

Conner Kent has posed:
It is movie night at the Roost. It has been a while since the last one, as Christmas and life scattered the team for a couple months. But they have a movie theatre for themselves; it would be a crime not to use it, right?

Speaking of crime, it was Conner and not Tim the one that picked the movies. Dirty Harry and Serpico. Two classical movies he has not seen yet. Someone else should get the pizzas and nuke some popcorn.

"So, Phoebe," he comments, "I heard the police got pretty much nothing from those gangsters trying to catch you. What should we do now?"

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Phoebe was in a comfy oversized donation bin sweater, worn jeans and slightly mis-matched slipper socks, balancing a Bart Allen-sized bowl of popcorn on one arm (the biggest mixing bowl they had), and Scout's begging on her legs as he looks forlornly up to the popped grain. She might not have picked either of the movies on Conner's list, but she was happy to be spending time with her 'family'.

"To be honest? Tim was considering turning me in and seeing what happens, bug me or track my movements once they had me. Not only will it show if someone outside of the Newspaper is looking for me, but if they've discovered my secret identity, then we still have the Bad Guys following." she explains, leaning her head back from her spot on the floor as she looks up to Conner.

    "Thoughts?"

Rose Wilson has posed:
Rose Wilson hauls the popcorn in a garbage bag into the movie roost, looking pleased that she's contributing. She has spiked her juice she carries but not the popcorn. The juice would smell it but it might be masked by the movie popcorn, because there's a whole garbage bag of it. She flops it down in front of Conner with a smirk, "Snack's on," she reports to Conner and over at the Phoebe.

She takes her drink to another row of seats near Conner and spreads herself out over two of them, "Nobody's turning shit in. You're not goin anywhere," she tells the Phoebe, "But since you can't go anywhere without being kidnapped, I guess we should do somethin soon."

Conner Kent has posed:
Conner looks at the truckton of popcorn Rose brings and grins. "I'll get some bowls," some rummage through counters follow. "Sounds risky, Pheebs," he replies to the other girl. "I mean, we don't even know why do they want you, or who they are past that woman that might be your aunt or some kind of distant relative."

He fills a bowl with popcorn and passes it to Phoebe. "In fact, there might be more of one group after you. Plus another after the Gotham Gate guy. We should ask him about it, by the way. Someone put a straw doll in his lead-covered safe and burned pig blood in his basement. Weird."

Laura Kinney has posed:
It's rare that Laura joins in for movie nights. Or social stuff in general. But today is one of those rare days where she has no leads to follow up on and no-one to hunt down. She's even cleaned all her weapons. Her excuse of last resort for getting out of things she'd rather not do.

Still she keeps true to form by practically disappearing in a corner. Quiet as a mouse as she considers the various questions, answers and suggestions.

"Did you have any indication your parents might have abilities Phoebe?" she muses. "Healing abilities are some of the most widely sought after powers. Wealthy criminals or unethical business people mostly." She considers the situation some more with a frown. "We could snatch the Aunt and dose her with some truth serum?"

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Scout gives another whiiiine from Phoebe's lap, until Phoebe starts using her free hand to scritch at the ancient dalmatian's ears. She accepts momentous bowl of popcorn, +1, and draws it down to the side of her.

"Well, there's a couple of possibilities. They want me because it's presumed the property and power of attorney would have flowed to me, which it didn't because I'm not an adult yet," she recounts, holding up one hand, "They're in it for my trust fund, which was invested in Wayne technologies and builds up pretty well from my dad's passing -- or, yeah, they know about my healing powers and want to abuse it, which is why I think the guys who tried to kidnap me as Balm were after me. Which means someone in the homeless camps might have compromised my identity." she frowns, and then she rubs the back of her head as she looks to Laura.

"I have no idea who my birth parents even are. No one could ID the people who dropped me off, no one ever stepped forward before a couple of months ago, so if it's a heriditary power it'd be news to me. The only thing I do know is that it's 'probably not' a mutation. It doesn't feel like one." she considers a moment, and she frowns.

"I'm... hesitant to hurt either of the Johnsons. They seem like they're decent people."

Rose Wilson has posed:
Rose Wilson has a sip of her spiked juice and says, "I'll hurt em for ya," she reports to Phoebe, "If needed," she explains and shrugs a little, as if it's nothing, and she's being really nice. She contemplates punching these 'decent' people for Phoebe and then maybe stabbing them. Yes, stabbing. Hmm. Could work.

She leans forward and hands her bowl to Conner with a little nod toward the huge bag of popcorn, maybe hoping he'll fill it up for her, "Hey Conner," she mutters in the suggestion. She leans back to her seat casually.

Conner Kent has posed:
"The Johnsons are lying about being your parents, though," points out Conner. Which is a pretty scummy thing to lie about. Not that he ever had parents to really understand some things.

Bowl of popcorn for Rose, and another for the sneaky Laura.

"I bet they know more that what they are saying," adds Conner, not completely sure snatching the aunt is the way to go, but not willing to discard any idea. "Someone also falsified the DNA tests from Gotham General. That's not cheap."

Laura Kinney has posed:
"Decent people do not falsely claim to be the parents of their long lost relatives," Laura notes with a shrug. "It's likely if your powers are hereditary then they would know about them in more detail. That's motive. And as your legal guardians they'd gain access to at least some of your accounts. More if you die in a few months time. Again a motive. Perhaps Tim should dig into their financials?"

She shifts so her legs are tucked underneath her.

"Gotham is rife with gangs, cults and secret societies. The newspaper would make an excellent front for one performing an investigation it couldn't otherwise carry out discreetly. It certainly did not seem like a legitimate news enterprise from the inside."

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
"Okay, yes, they lied about being my parents and she's apparently related to me and the idea that they fudged the DNA tests is... really, really, really disturbing." she admits quietly, and breathes out as she closes her eyes a moment.

"Still, the idea of just turning myself in was... y'know, a plan. And Tim wouldn't have come up with it or considered it if he thought it was beyond a reasonable risk." she points out. "But if I'm tracked, and on the inside, that means that we can figure things out faster, and if I'm in danger there's always extraction plans." the girl points out, "I'm probably in less danger being tracked there than I am on the outside." she states -- and then when Laura points out her death, she gives a soft 'hmm' sound.

"The Gate /used/ to be a rumour rag. They ran pieces like 'Batman's Secret Identity Revealed to be 1950's Batboy from Carnival Freakshow' or assumptions that the Justice League were a cabal of evil alients out to enslave humanity." Phoebe tilts her head back, looking to Laura and then to Conner.

"... and yeah, Gotham has its... issues." she frowns, and she rubs the back of her head.

"And Bart was able to confirm that the Johnsons are really from Montana. Bank accounts from the last three years and everything. Just live in a place in the middle of nowhere homesteading."

Rose Wilson has posed:
Rose Wilson takes the bowl back from Conner and baps him on the shoulder in pure gratitude. She's so nice. She slumps into her seat and sighs a bit, probably annoyed at all this back and forth, "I can't follow this shit," she mutters to nobody in particular, "Do you know what you want done or not?" she wonders, asking the Phoebe directly. Rose will surely do it if told. While the Phoebe contemplates her question, she chomps on some popcorn while the others continue to muse over her ultimate fate. "Are we watching the movie or we not watching the movie?" she wonders.

Dick Grayson has posed:
The Outsiders hideout, such as it is, is not the sort of place Nightwing spends too much time. He's been making his best effort not to seem like a big brother keeping a close eye on the kids, even if that is what he is in a lot of ways. He's still in costume, domino mask upon his face, as he enters via the side alley. There's a little bit of dirt on the suit, and what may be flecks of blood that he nonchalantly wipes off against his flank.

"Dirty Harry, huh?" he asks, tilting his head, "I know someone who'd have a conniption hearing a bunch of impressionable young super-kids were watching this."

Conner Kent has posed:
Conner opens a can of soda and fidgets with the remote, smirking at Rose. But decides the movie can wait a minute or three. "Didn't know that about Montana. But it links up to the idea they know who you are and what you can do. And, yeah, if Tim thinks he can protect you, maybe we should try that plan." Kidnapping the aunt for interrogation looks like a very logical idea too, if a bit disturbing. Probably not Superfam-approved behavior.

He glances at the door of the theatre as Dick steps in. "What? Oh, hey. They told me it is one of the best neo-noir movies out there," not that he will admit he is digging for ideas on how to proceed with this case. (He totally was).

Laura Kinney has posed:
"Tim is in charge of operational matters," Laura notes with bland indifference. "If he says you'd be fine then we simply make that the reality." She glances at the screen and shrugs. She can follow along no matter how much other noise there is. "I am considering putting the owner of the Gotham Gate under surveillance. Unless anyone objects? If they are involved with a gang they'll need to contact them at some stage."

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
"No, I don't know what I want done, if I knew it would already be done, unlike everyone else I only have like, six months of hero training under my utility belt." Phoebe replies with uncharacteristic shortness to Rose, her shoulders rising up. "... andif I go with them, maybe that will stop all of *you* from getting hurt on *my* behaaai D--Nigh- you know what, I'm just gonna..." she mutters, giving a wave at Dick and looking defeated.

Rose Wilson has posed:
Rose Wilson frowns as Phoebe gets snippy with her. With her? Wow, what the fudge? She smirks, "Why don't you stop worrying about it? I'm not gonna get---" she begins and throws up her hand as Conner pauses the movie, "Come on," she whines. She doesn't say anything about Tim's stupid plan but will probably help anyway. She doesn't return to finishing her snippy comeback at Phoebe because Nightwing saunters in and interrupts, "Dad, the movie is fifty years old. I think they have worse stuff on television now," she tells him, "Just sayin."

Dick Grayson has posed:
"What's happening?" Nightwing asks, moving towards the kitchen sink to fill his hands with water and patting his face down. The gloves are likewise peeled off and hung over the back of a chair, reddened and raw knuckles flexing as he stretches his fingers and runs his hands under the faucet.

"It's a good flick, just don't want you all to go solving any problem with a 44 Magnum."

Conner Kent has posed:
Conner tsks at Phoebe. "We can handle a couple creepy relatives, some gangsters and a scummy yellow press rag owner." He shrugs at Dick. Who has a .44 Magnum in this team, anyway? That is, besides Rose, and probably Laura, and Hope.

Okay, so maybe Nightwing has point. Not admitting anything, though!

"Surveillance on the Gotham Gate people seems a good plan," he comments to Laura. "Let me know if you need help with it."

Laura Kinney has posed:
"I much prefer a silenced .22 caliber pistol," Laura assures Nightwing. "Easier to conceal and it's much less likely to attract attention. If you're firing a large obvious round like a .44 you may as well be using a full on rifle and put the extra distance between yourself and the target."

A nod to Phoebe. "I should be able to plant some bugs and establish a viewing post. But anyone who wants to look into the electronic records is welcome to assist on that front." She blinks a few times. "As for getting hurt.. I was not aware anyone on the team had been injured or even remotely threatened by the situation." Which is probably Laura speak for don't worry about it.

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
There are a lot of big guns on the team, just not all of them are .44 magnums.

Phoebe does look over to Dick a moment, eyeballing his hands, and she scritches Scout -- the aged Canine having rested hsi head even harder against Phoebe's lap with her irritation. He yawns, and hops to his feet to pad to the side and instead, give The Eyes to Rose, looking to her bowl of popcorn.

"There was an issue last week." Phoebe explains to Laura, "Cassie and Rose got some pretty nasty gasoline fire burns on my behalf, and there was this awful... silly... putty type person." she frowns, her nose wrinkling.

"And I do worry about it. Not everyone on the team has a healing factor, or their healing factor isn't as strong as yours. So, that is literally my job on the team to worry about people getting hurt." she states, her gaze going to Nightwing again.

Dick Grayson has posed:
"I see you looking," Nightwing calls from the sink, turning off the faucet and wiping his hands down with a cloth, "But believe me, this is so par for the course I barely feel it. It's a good lesson when you start this sort of life without super-strength or the ability to heal quickly or whatever. Punching someone in the face? Hurts a bunch, so try to make it count."

"Putty type person? Sounds like Clayface. Well, one of the Clayfaces."

Rose Wilson has posed:
Rose Wilson raises her hand and looks over at Nightwing, "Yeah, she's right, I got set on fire and shot through the f***** air," she reports hyper-cynically, "But that was Conner's fault for not helping with the damn goo monster. Maybe if I had a tazer," she muses, thinking about the fight.

Rose is quiet a second while she tries to think if she has a .44 Magnum glorified on her wall or not, "I'd have to check the stock to see if I have a 44," she says, pretending she's Wal-Mart or something, ready to check her inventory. She returns to major league smirking at Phoebe.

Conner Kent has posed:
"Hey, I helped!" Protests Conner. He used his heat vision, just not full strength. "That guy didn't look like Clayface, I think. He was more water than mud?" He is not sure. "But yeah, you should wear one of those fancy utility belts full of tricks. Hell, everyone in the team should. You never know when a tazer-gun, or even bat-shark-repellent might be handy. I had to fight this shark-guy when I was in Hawaii a couple years ago..."

Hand-waving at that. "Anyway, we do have a couple plans now, that's good. Now lets see about that Magnum guy?" He turns on the movie again, although he is okay with following the conversation. He can multitask. And also avoid more of Rose's murder glances.

Laura Kinney has posed:
Laura Kinney rolls her shoulders.

"Yes I read the mission report," she points out. "Not to mention you made the news." Admittedly she made the news too that same day. Although only in the blurry retreating from the scene of the crime sense. "I don't consider that serious harm though. Everyone still has their limbs and vital organs." Anything you can crawl away from is just a scratch in Laura's world!

"Once I've set up a listening post overlooking the Gate I'll notify everyone of the location so we can take shifts."

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
"Healing your hands at the base not nearly as awkward as the first time we met." Phoebe points out from her place, giving a slightly wounded look at Dick, but she doesn't illuminate or elaborate. That one's between them and Tim.

"My point is, Laura -- it shouldn't have happened. That means people were watching the neighborhood, and I lived only a couple of blocks from here -- that's... way too close for comfort." she frowns.

Scout, seeing as he's not getting popcorn from Rose, proceeds on to beg at Conner for popcorn, delivering The Eyes in a manner that only an aging dalmatian can.

Rose Wilson has posed:
Rose Wilson shakes her head at Phoebe's logic, "Doesn't matter, we can deal with it. Everyone's fine. Battle wasn't that bad. Stop complaining----we'll deal with this," she explains helpfully. She frowns at the dog trying to get popcorn. Rose has more of her drink through her straw and it makes a drained sound after she finishes it off. "I broke my sword, Conner. That was a good sword," she reminds him.

Conner Kent has posed:
Conner can't resist Scout's old puppy eyes, of course. Although after the first handful of popcorn he does glance to Phoebe for approval. Popcorn is probably not healthy for dogs.

"You have about fifteen swords," he mutters at 'stop-complaining' Rose, tossing a piece of popcorn at her head for good measure. "Phoebe, we went with you to protect you. So, it happened as it was planned. More or less. You are safe. Rose and Cassie are tough, and an argument could be started about being more careful with thrashing SUVs so they don't explode."

Laura Kinney has posed:
"Was the sword an antique? If so if you have the broken pieces I can probably find a swordsmith able to repair it," Laura offers to Rose, shifting to the side so she can better see the rest of the team. "It might not ever been the same again, but you can at least keep it for sentimental reasons."

Of course there is no guarantee Logan will know a master swordmaker willing to take on the job. Let alone be willing to put Laura in touch with them. Still it never hurts to ask.

Rose Wilson has posed:
Rose Wilson frowns, "Antique?" she asks herself, thinking about her sword she broke during the fight cause of Conner, "No, not really. The scabbard belonged to my Dad, though. I was able to find it and---" she begins and then grows quiet because figures she shouldn't be talking about Deathstroke, "Nevermind, forget it," she adds. She looks at the movie again contemplatively.

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
"He can have a /couple/ of kernels, otherwise he has difficulty going oh-you-tee." Phoebe replies to Conner's questioning.

At the comment about the scabbard, there's an even guiltier look to Rose and she rubs the back of her head. "... if it's broken, I'll... pay for its replacement. After this mess is taken care of. I can borrow against my trust fund." she states quietly, rubbing the back of her head.

Conner Kent has posed:
"We can build swords downstairs," points out Conner. "Haven't you seen the fabricators and 3D printers? They are so good Hope used them to rebuild her laser guns." And now it is time for him to shut up for a minute, thinking about the redhead, with a side glance to Rose.

Looks like relationships in this team last three months tops. But at least they have a big movie theatre for Saturday evenings.

Laura Kinney has posed:
Laura Kinney looks at Conner like he's grown a second head. "You don't 3D print a good sword. That would be like using ammunition you got in a store," she states. This is clearly something she has a strong opinion on. "A quality blade is like art. You need a master to produce the best examples."

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
"On that, we can agree." Phoebe states, "I mean, it's not like I simply generate one whenever I need it." Phoebe adds on, drawing her legs up so that she can rest the popcorn bowl in it, and leaning back to watch the movie, though her mind is appearing elsewhere. There was a lot to think about, and so much more to consider.
