Interview with the Vanisher
Date of Scene: 20 February 2021
Location: Interview Room: Triskelion
Synopsis: Telford Porter comes to SHIELD to talk about the rising problems between mutants and the Friends of Humanity. He gets to walk away with his raisins. Lucky.
Cast of Characters: Telford Porter, Daisy Johnson, Elena Rodriguez, Lance Hunter, Melinda May

Telford Porter has posed:
Telford, (Telly) Porter, the internationally suspected smuggler who is wanted for questioning in just... sooo... sooo many cases of smuggling illegals across borders and across oceans, plus being suspected in a series of robberies which were perpetrated by mutant gangs during Loki's attack on New York has been on the wanted list for a long, long, time but he's been a low priority because his crimes are usually property based or helping people leave bad places to get to better places. No murdering or terrorism, yet. No one really expected him to show up on the roof of shield headquarters and ask to speak to the manager.

Politely turning himself in to custody and agreeing to being escorted inside he waits. He's nice and handcuffed to a table like a good little suspected criminal with all his fancy tattoos. He's just wearing a t-shirt and a pair of jeans. Nothing that can hide any bombs or weapons. He agreed to be searched. There was nothing on him except and open bag of chocolate raisins. Not even a cellphone. He came prepared to be detained.

Daisy Johnson has posed:
It's training day at the Triskelion. Or rather, it's 'lets run a physical check' on Lance. Which meant combat training. It also meant Daisy had brought in Elena because Lance had to be properly checked to see if he was up to being a field agent!

"So, Agent Hunter. We meet again." She says to him with some amusement. "I brought in Elena." a beat, "Bobbi's orders." of course it would be Bobbi behind this two on one training. Of course..

Yet it seems Lance is saved by the bell, an agent coming in to talk with them. Telford Porter has been apprehended? And came in of his own free will? A frown creases Daisy's features, "Seems we will have to delay this. There's someone waiting to be interviewed, apparently they just turned themselves in. Telford Porter, rings a bell to anyone?"

Changing clothes is quick, and so is making a quick search through the SHIELD databases while walking back to the room. "Telford Porter, smuggler, suspected mutant. Travels all around. May have some way of easily moving from place to place." she sighs. "Lets see what he wants."

Walking to the interview room door she opens it, walking in. "Good afternoon, Porter."

Elena Rodriguez has posed:
To say Elena would be considered one of the heavy hitters might be something of an over exageration, but she is definitely a good measuring stick when coupled with Quake. Thankful to Lance, someone comes in to get them just before training can kick off properly, switching the Columbian's serious switch over to work mode? It's hard to tell the difference really.

Walking with Daisy and Lance towards the interrogation rooms, likewise flicking through what the database has on Porter with a flick of her finger across the screen. "Have not heard of him specifically, but this is quite a rap sheet." Specifically the strings of robberies during the attack on New York. "And he just shows up on the roof, POOF? Maybe he takes wrong turn at Albuquerque? Like rabbit."

Lance Hunter has posed:
He and Bobs were going to have words about this training just as soon as he dreams up suitable revenge for her. But for now he's happy to go do just about anything else. He's dressed casual, t-shirt, black jeans and his SHIELD lanyard around his neck. No weapon in the Trisk, especially not when seeing a suspect that can teleport. "Bunny," he corrects. "And good point, if I could teleport like that, I'd never turn myself in," he says glancing at the tablet. "And would have a waay longer rap sheet," he observes.

Telford Porter has posed:
The bald, tattooed mutant is sitting at the interview table looking at it. Running his fingers over the cool surface when the agents walk in. He looks up at them and nods his head in greeting but doesn't make any sudden moves or seem nervous. A friendly, "Yo." Is all that is offered in greetings. "Are you the boss?" he asks not that he's complaining, Daisy is a much nicer looking boss than he expected. He eyes her up and down, his hairless eyebrow ridge rising a little as he gives another, more subtle nod, like he's acknowledging her general hotness at a dance club. Then two more people come in and it totally ruins it. "Three people, just for me? I'm honored."

Daisy Johnson has posed:
On the way Daisy comments to the others, "Well, I am sure FitzSimmons must have something to counter it. But lets talk first and see what he has to tell us. I am not expecting him to stay here for long." a roll of her eyes, "Just like Mystique escaped all those months ago."

But then it's serious mode, the door opening, dark eyes taking in the bald mutant, studying posture and demeanor. All very standard to SHIELD procedures, "I am Daisy Johnson. These are Agent Rodriguez and Agent Hunter." a faint smile on her features when the man speaks those last words. "With a rap sheet the size of yours what did you expect?"

Chairs are around the table, Daisy moving to one to sit down, waiting for everyone to settle in before asking in. "So, what brings you to us today?" her own posture being rather relaxed even if showing some curiousness.

Telford Porter has posed:
Telford says with a mixture of sincerity and cocky arrogance that he is in total control of this situation, "I'm here as a concerned citizen of mutant town. We've suffered two terrorist attacks in a month and the only people being held in prison are the people being attacked. The cops let the humans out on bail but kept the mutants as prisoners. Now, I help a lot of people in mutant town and around the globe. I've got connections. I hear a lot of things and I'm concerned because I think," he says motioning to himself as best he can with his chained hands, "Just the vibe I'm picking up, that if you don't let those mutants out on bail just like you did the humans it's going to start trouble." He says lowering his hands back to the table, "I think, you should think, really-really, hard about how bad it looks that you are labeling the people who are being attacked by suicide bombers as the terrorists just because we're a different race than most people." He says then he pauses and looks up as if to think, "I seem to remember there being a word to describe that kind of bad behavior." He says then looks at Lance, "Can you think of a word that describes that?" he asks.

Elena Rodriguez has posed:
Agent Rodriguez quirks a brow at Lance's correction, "There is a difference?" Clearly not fully catching the pop culture reference she's used. Eyes still going over what little SHIELD actually has on Telly, the tablet is put aside before they enter the interrogation room. "We do not have any of the responsible parties in custody, at this moment." Elena points out, finding a corner in which to lean with her hands resting on her hips. Brown eyes on Telford as he goes into his speach, it puts a great many things in perspective hearing him though. "Why have you chosen to come to SHIELD with this and not local New York law enforcement?" She can almost guess the answer to that quesiton, but it's an obvious case of her wanting to hear him say it.

Lance Hunter has posed:
"Well one's his name and..." Lance begins before Daisy opens the door and he says to Elena. "I'll explain later," he says before stepping into the room with Vanisher. "What she said, mate," he says. "We don't go around locking up people for being attacked." The NYPD? Wouldn't put it past them these days. Though he does whisper to Daisy. "We don't, do we?" best to be sure!

Melinda May has posed:
As the three agents move towards the interrogation room to meet with Mr. Porter, they're joined by Agent May. It's inevitable at least one of the L7's or L8's on site would get directed to the site. "I'll sit behind the glass," she tells them just before they enter. "If you need backup, I'm here. If I have a question--" she taps the comm in her ear-- "I'll let you know."

But, really, there are three of them. The guy will either be telling the truth or he won't be. And May can make that call just as easily watching him through a mirrored window and on monitoring displays as she can in the room.

Besides... everyone knows she prefers not to do the talking.

Daisy Johnson has posed:
"We don't." Daisy confirms up to Lance with a 'really?' look as she regards him for a few seconds. Eyes then go to Elena and she nods. "Like Agent Rodriguez says we have noone in custody related to the attack. Yet it's being investigated, and we have looked over the site personally." she says, leaning forward and placing her elbows on the table. She chooses to ignore the threats and simply smiles, asking directly. "What are you going to do to help us in this investigation?"

She gestures, "Seems in this we have the same interests, mmm?" another glance back to Elena, curious at the answer to her question as well.

Telford Porter has posed:
Looking over at Elena, then looks back at Daisy then looks back at Elena, Telford says, "Because the people under the Friends of Humanity hoods are the cops. The blue protects its own." As if she should know this, then he looks over at Daisy, "I read about shield. It works with international governments. It isn't as bound to the U.S. as most federal agencies are. You have the flexibility and leverage to do what's right and I think most of the people working her probably want to do what's right. You don't take this kind of job unless you care about strangers. Even the mutant ones. When Mutant Town was ripped out of the earth Shield didn't wait for congress to vote on whether fighting a superior alien force to save a bunch of mutants was worth the cost, you just acted. We remember that."

Elena Rodriguez has posed:
Elena's hands remain on her hips, eyes on Telford as he explains why he'd chosen SHIELD rather than more mundane law enforcement agencies. She looks visibly comforted by Daisy's answer to Lance's question. She'd not have suspected SHIELD was keeping captives, but it's good to hear it out loud. A casual glance around the room, one hand coming up to scratch the underside of her jaw before dropping back to her hip. "Seems so." She agrees with Daisy, quiet for a moment considering the mutant come to speak with them. "The more information you can provide to us, the more of a whole picture we can put together. As Agent Johnson said, an investigation of the site of the bombing was conducted-" She put in a report, so there's no reason pretending they didn't go, now. "- But if you are on the ground in Mutant Town, you could fill in a lot of the gaps for us."

Lance Hunter has posed:
Lance holds up his hands in surrender at Daisy's look. "Just asking," he drops his voice hopefully low enough so Vanisher can't hear, but in this tiny room who knows. "We've done our share of shady things lately, I'm just making sure."

Melinda May has posed:
Behind the glass, May spends a few moments bringing up information not just on Porter, himself, but also on the riots and attacks he mentioned. She brings up the names of all those still in custody -- looking to see who might be held by SHIELD and who might have been picked up by public authorities. Porter's complaints aren't about SHIELD. They're about the cops. That's a whole different focus.

"Focus on the cops," she suggests to her team. "Where's his proof? This could be a personal beef between him and some blues, given his rap sheet. But it there could be something legit in his complaint. I'm running a check on who the cops are still holding and why."

Telford Porter has posed:
Telford grins an awkward apologetic grin, "I was in... I was.. well, somewhere else at the time helping a nice family move." Which is one way of saying moving refugees across a border illegally, "All I know is that the Friends of Humanity have people inside the police and probably the FBI because they sure seem to know a lot about us. Where we will be, when to strike to do the most damage. How to get past our citizen patrols. We are considering building a wall around Mutant Town and setting up strict access requirements." Ironic for him, "The police can't be trusted. At least not many of them. Tell you what though, give me your phone number." He says looking to Daisy, "I'll make sure the Brotherhood gets it. You can coordinate with them." Bet she wasn't expecting that.

Daisy Johnson has posed:
Well, what Lance said was true enough. SHIELD was, in the end, a spy organization. But she at least nods in resigned agreement to Lance. She looks back to Porter, "Or could be that they have people infiltrated in mutant town itself. Do you have any proof about these cops being dirty?" even as she then admits, "Though in our investigation of the attack site the van seemed to have been property of the Friends of Humanity. No arrests as of yet though." a brow then arching when the man confirms having contacts with the Brotherhood.

While she waits for May's info on those cops she smirks when her phone number is asked for, reaching inside her uniform to bring out a card. "Assuming you are just going to walk out of here?" then a faint smile. "Ah, maybe not walk." she slides the card across the table.

"So what, you are a neutral party? Just an in-between? Or actually interested in helping taking down the real culprits? But for that we will need more than just gut feelings. Proof, that would help."

Elena Rodriguez has posed:
Elena narrows her eyes curiously at something said, tapping her index fingers against the hard leather belt circling her hips. "There is always corruption in local police forces." She says this from experience, it's one of the reasons she works with SHIELD actually. A chance to strike out against those agencies. If not for that fact, she'd usually she'd be throwing her chips in with the rebels. With Daisy having asked a rather important question, Yo-Yo waits to see what Telford has to say on the matter before adding anything further.

Lance Hunter has posed:
Hunter too seems to be, for once, keeping his mouth shut, attention on Vanisher. Though he seems to nod at the idea of the cops being dirty, he'd had his own run ins with corrupt organizations in the past. "Whatever you can tell us only helps your chances of us actually doing something to help out down in Mutant Town, so let us know what you can." Okay maybe keeping his mouth shut was too big an ask...

Melinda May has posed:
May starts sorting through information, brown eyes darting quickly between her tablet and the window. "Every single one of the humans charged in the incident was granted bail and was able to pay," she tells the team over comms. "They were bailed out by a fund from the Moore Foundation. The mutants who are left in custody were either deemed too dangerous to be granted bail -- and the footage I've got of them suggests there's some merit to the judge's decision on that -- or simply couldn't afford it."

She drums her fingers lightly on the back of the tablet, thinking. "I've got nothing concrete to suggest the cops are dirty, but there's clearly something bigger at work. His perspective might be skewed, and walls are never a good idea in cases like this, but his complaint looks legit."

That's rather something coming from the jaded agent.

As for letting him go, given the length of his rap sheet? "Ask him how willing he is to become a CI," she says. "How willing he is to work with us. If he is... maybe we can ignore some of his indiscretions for a while."

Telford Porter has posed:
Accepting the card, Telford says, "In-between is literally my line of work." shruging his shoulders, "I don't have much I can do other than get people talking, I have no power over the legal process which doesn't involve crossing a line I really don't want to cross. I just wanted to show up and tell you, someone needs to act because mutants are at a breaking point. I'm just trying to keep the peace. Peace is good for business and I like business. But if they keep treating us like we're terrorists long enough, eventually mutants are going to start acting like it and that is not good for any of us." He says then suggests, "You might want to start with who was first on the scene after the bombing. Those Friends outfits are easy to remove and hide in your car. If a whole bunch of cops who shouldn't have been on patrol near mutant town arrived on the scene before the cops who should have been there, you might want to talk to those extra-fast cops. " as someone who is extra fast, he knows all about that.

The question about walking out of here? He dodges that like he's The One. "Say, can I have my raisins back? They are from France. I love those things."

Daisy Johnson has posed:
What Daisy hears from May on the comms has her furrow her brows, lips pressed to a thin line while considering the implications. Yes, it ran deep apparently. And involving important people. For SHIELD that didn't matter though. "You came to the right place." she then finally says, "As I told you before, we have looked into it and we have found some .., irregularities. And SHIELD *wants* to help in this." she opening her hands to the sides, "I am .., different myself." Inhumans..., Mutants..., mostly the same. Mistrusted by humanity in the same manner. "So your plea isn't falling in deaf ears. And we are willing to believe you have an honest interest in this."

It's when the man dodges the question about getting out of here that she smiles, perhaps expecting an escape attempt to happen soon. "Before you try to get out of here please consider I will be writing the reports. And I *don't* want to be here writing out reports in triplicate about an escaped prisoner on my watch." Bureaucracy. Got to hate it. "So why don't you become one of our CIs? We'd be willing to ignore your rap sheet for a time."

The raisins aren't handed back. They are being held hostage.

Elena Rodriguez has posed:
If Elena finds out there's raisins, they might get eaten.

Chewed up and spit out by the executive branch.

Her hands remain locked around her hips, lips curled just so in a little frown at what she's head from May. She doesn't look at the window, but it's no secret how much Yo-Yo hates corrupt law enforcement. It cuts deep to the core of her. Almost as much as she hates being deceived. She's also not very good at hiding what she's thinking, which is a terrible, horrible, not so good trait for a spy.

Unless you need a bad cop.

Which she's pretty good at.

"There's raisins?"

Uh oh.

"No he comido todo el día, estoy hambrienta..."

Lance Hunter has posed:
Hunter for his part leans against the walls arms crossed, offering just a little push of his own on Telford. "Unlike the cops, you can trust us to keep our word, so if you to become a CI, we're going to keep you safe and nobody's going to hear a word about it. Trust me, haven't been back with SHIELD long but the one thing I know is they're good people, the sort you want watching your back, and also not for nothing, they're not the sort of people you want to piss off lightly either." Might as well cover all the bases there.

Melinda May has posed:
"I don't know about the first responders," May says, eyes again skimming footage. "But the instigators are definitely not among those arrested. They did a quick fade into the crowds, I think."

She snirks some, though, recognizing that Porter isn't directly answering Daisy's question. Frankly, he didn't directly answer either of her questions; he has no proof. But she's got enough that she can ignore it.

His raisins are sitting in the observation room with May. Protocol means anything he came in with is *NOT* kept in the room with them. So, while Yo-yo's probably plenty fast enough to come get them... May lays her hand over top of them lightly. "Don't touch the raisins," she cautions them in a very definite Cavalry tone.

Telford Porter has posed:
In response to the offer to be an informant "Does it pay?" escapes out of his mouth before Tedford even realizes he's talking. Reflex really. "I mean," he says trying to recover, "if it does, I'd like for that money to be put towards getting the mutants in jail lawyers. The court appointed lawyers aren't exactly top shelf." The money from his last job is already spent. His financial record will show he spends money almost as fast as he makes it. A lot of it is taken out in the form of cash and never seen by his bank account again. He's rarely negative but he's not someone who keeps a fund to fall back on. The kind of bank account of someone who doesn't plan on living to be old.

The idea that he has some kind of travel powers pans out if you investigate his bank account. He makes withdrawals from ATM around the globe much faster than it's possible to travel the distance between them. "But I'll be glad to help either way." Then he holds up his hands and presents the shackles to Daisy. "I won't run off. I swear."

Elena Rodriguez has posed:
Elena can almost SEE May's hand sitting ontop of that box of raisins. It's enough to shrink her shoulders and lower her head in response because she really wanted those raisins and was absolutely willing to speedball in there to grab them.

Outwardly, she just stands there with her hip jut out slightly, watching Telford as he tip toes the landmine of his own quick mouth. "Very altruistic of you. In return for your assistance with this investigation and future information provided about situations in and around Mutant Town, I think we could probably get a lawyer to look over the cases for all of the arrested mutants." A smirk curls one corner of her mouth.

Daisy Johnson has posed:
"That's what you always say." Daisy murmurs at Elena when she speaks about not having eaten all day. Typical! But yes, those raisins may have to be thoroughly investigated later on by the uh .., tasting team. And France? Good, she might even eat one with her pinky up. Haute couture! But those thoughts about basking on food are put aside soon enough, "It pays in terms of bringing those people to justice."

"But as for the lawyers." She considers a moment then says, "There's a firm who can help with it. Nelson and Murdock, out of Hell's Kitchen. They do pro bono in cases like this usually." and she knew Matt would help them. "They are also the best lawyers you can get in New York." she may also be biased about that because of REASONS.

"If you won't run off does that mean you accept?" she gets up from her chair, going around the table and approaching to take those cuffs out from the man.

Lance Hunter has posed:
"Least we could do," Hunter says, smirking faintly. Should have held out. SHIELD has some deep pockets. "You're making the right choice mate, trust me on that one."
5rHe glances over at the glass, the talk of raisins made him remember he missed lunch.

The look over at the glass also covers the little eye roll at Daisy's choice of lawyers, because of course that's who she'd choose.

Melinda May has posed:
May watches the man now, setting her quick research aside. There's a lot more to dig into here, from the arresting officers to the Moore Foundation, nevermind the Brotherhood or anyone else. She sets her tablet down and crosses her arms, eyes narrowed in thought, but waits to find out for sure whether or not he'll play ball on their terms.

Telford Porter has posed:
Rubbing his wrists and standing up to stretch the bald mutant says, "Yes, I will be your informant. I know things are getting hot and people on both sides will be angry, so calmer heads need to prevail." Telford says all reasonably then he looks down at the bottom of the table he was sitting at for some reason. He eyes the corners at the floor then looks back at Daisy, "You're right, sounds like I came to the right people. So, you said there was paperwork to fill out?" he asks like he's ready to answer all (Or at least most) of her questions. He just really isn't a very informed informant, "I'll talk to some of my contacts at church and get your number to the brotherhood. I suspect they will know more than I do. I'll try and convince them you're willing to help. The lawyers will go a long way towards that."

Daisy Johnson has posed:
"There is paperwork to fill out IF you run away." Daisy says, squinting her eyes at the bald mutant briefly. Sort of threateningly too! Noone makes Daisy get buried in bureaucracy and comes out safe from it! "Do that." she says about getting the number to the brotherhood, "We are willing to talk with them. You can tell Mystique I said hello." she says back to Telford, not hiding the fact she has met the woman.

"Also, Nelson and Murdock are good people. As I said, they will help you out." A look towards the rest inside the room. "Anyone's got any more questions for now?" she asks.

Nope, the raisins aren't being handed back yet. If ever!

Elena Rodriguez has posed:
Elena shrugs helplessly at Daisy, unable to contain the grin when her friend comments on the predictable nature of her being hungry. "I am slave to my metabolism.." Quiet, defensive, but playful. Her dark eyes turn from Daisy, back to Telford, "No, I do not have anything." Glancing, over to Lance to see if he's anything to add. It's also a glance at the one way where May is watching from the perch.

Lance Hunter has posed:
Lance shakes his head when Elena looks his wat. "All good here," he says with a shrug. "Let's say we wrap this up and get some lunch." He suggests, a touch unprofessionally but all this food talk was making him hungrier by the minute.

Melinda May has posed:
May picks up the tablet and the raisins and starts moving to the door of the observation room as it becomes clear they've concluded the interview. She steps out in the hall and enters the interrogation room. "Thank you for your help, Mr. Porter," she says, swiping a screen on her tablet until a Confidential Informant Agreement is revealed. (It's SHIELD. There is ALWAYS paperwork.) "Sign here," she tells him, lifting a stylus from the side of the tablet. "Then you can have your raisins back and be free to go."

Talk about holding raisins hostage.

Telford Porter has posed:
Seemingly happy to comply, Telly takes the tablet and the pen signing and leaving his fingerprints just like May wanted. "If I ever meet Mystique, I'll tell her you said hello. I don't exactly run in her circles. She's not really a church person and I'm not really a shooting people and blowing things up kind of person." Telford says. Wouldn't that just be freaking horrifying if he was. "I don't really have a phone number." He says, which makes sense seeing as he travels so much it's hard to get a phone that goes everywhere "But I have a crypto-mail account on the dark web, you can reach me at. TPBandit@Cryptomail.7844e.onion I check it every morning for jobs offers." Doing odd jobs like helping people move... totally that.

Daisy Johnson has posed:
A brow quirks when Telford finally signs it up, her eyes going to Melinda as if asking 'do we really have to give back those raisins?!'. But she appears resigned about it. So she simply nods. "Duly noted." this about the mail account. And then she can't help but agree with Lance. It was lunch time. "Lunch sounds good.."

Yet Lance does merit warning, "But don't think I have forgotten our scheduled training." nope, never forgotten. You can't escape it Lance!

She looks back to Telford, "Don't be a stranger, mmm?"

Elena Rodriguez has posed:
Lunch /does/ sound great, but there is rarely a time where that is not true for Elena. The only bad time to find something to eat, is when you're already eating. Even then, concessions could be made. "Glad to have you aboard." Hands fall off her hips when May makes her appearance, Yo-Yo ready to go to the cafeteria. All the paperwork is fine and good, but if she can get out of it by 'not being there' when the shits starts rolling down hill? "Hunter, last one there springs for dessert?" Unfair. So unfair.

Lance Hunter has posed:
Lance grins, "A very long lunch then... no time for training..." he says before laughing as Elena offers to race him for dessert. "Might as well just grab my wallet it's quicker and I'm less tired by the end," he says but that doesn't stop him for making a break for the door.

Melinda May has posed:
May takes the tablet and stylus back from Porter and passes him the raisin box in return. She then steps back towards the door and lets the rest of them precede her from the room. "Have a good day, Mr. Porter," she tells the mutant as he passes. She given gives him a smile -- abeit a small, simply polite one.

Once everyone has retreated to the hall, she steps out of the room and closes the door behind her. Tucking the tablet under her arm, she says, "Why don't I escort you to the foyer, Mr. Porter? You can grab a taxi." Instead of just appearing on the roof.

Telford Porter has posed:
Accepting his raising back Telford says, "Thanks. That would be lovely." The man says smiling at May. He doesn't seem to want to pull his vanishing act in front of the shield agents. He notes the hungry looks about his raisins and considers offering them but... they are just so good.

Poor, poor, May, doomed by her sense of responsibility. Escorting out Telly takes time because he is looking around and noting everything of interest. Especially any nice office desks asking questions about the things on the walls. What all the computers do. Where they keep the Iron-Man suits. I mean, they must have extra suits, right? It would be irresponsible of them to let him keep them all in one place where they could be blown up by any maniac with an attack helicopter. That would just be silly.

Once he is outside he does indeed call a cab. Which he leaves a note to charge shield for when he vanishes from the backseat once it's far enough away. He didn't bring his wallet!
