Cast of Characters: Baxter Stockman, Groot

Baxter Stockman has posed:
It's been weeks, really. After the first experiment, and the damages it caused, Baxter Stockman was both hopeful, and more cautious about working with the space wood. The first experiment had to be destroyed. It was strong, but of course, too unruly. But it had taught them a lot. A lot that was about to be put into the second test.

"Inhibitor is here," one of the techs tells him. The mental inhibitor was designed to hopefully restrain the mind and put it under their control to prevent the rampaging.
"Good, mutagen is ready? Lindsey?" Baxter asks.
The asian young woman nods. "I altered it a little to compensate for how rapidly the growth takes place. It'll be hard to know what to exactly expect, though, at least, until we try it. This is a pioneer experiment with the mutagen."
"That's what we're about," Stockman comments. "Time to see if we can't make history. If this works, we may be able to actually regrow human limbs." Needless to say, Stockgen would become a massive entity in the health sector if such a thing was accomplished, and overnight it would become the largest biomedical company in the world. Very justifiable risk.

"Okay, let's get this started." The team this time is working from outside the test room, just in case. A heavy shatterproof glass wall protects them, triple layered. Robotic arms on remote pilot units move around the experiment, handling the equipment that actually is in the test room. Much safer than placing his people actually IN the room. Stockman holds his hands behind his back, and nods. "Let's commence, shall we?"
Lindsey takes the psychotropic compound, this time on a smaller piece than last time, hopefully to keep it contained more easily. A container within the room should be large enough for the smaller alien that would be created in the process, and by their estimations, should hold its strength. So far, it's something that has some known quantities that they are working with.

Groot has posed:
Its a bad idea to use inhibitors on beings from Planet X. Their DNA is VERY VERY different, and mutagens are another thing altogether. Sure, they have DNA, but that's like saying rocks have it. They're just...different. VERY different. The Not Groot being is very unhappy and just beneath the threshold of sapience. Its primary mission is to destroy itself since it doesnt have the all important protien authorizing its existance. It has knowledge and experiences that are dangerous for others to have, memories that must be kept but thus far it hasnt been able to act on it. The compound, however, works well enough for now. Not Groot can adapt quickly but right now its enough and it seems to seem...stupider. Never sapient, but also not ruthlessly lethally cunnning either.

Baxter Stockman has posed:
The lower level of intelligence is helpful. "Let's..." Baxter frowns. "Let's see if we can find a way to calm it. We don't want to introduce the mutagen until it's a bit more docile. Do we have any idea /why/ it's so violent? Is it experiencing pain?"

The tech monitoring shakes his head. "It doesn't seem to be having any pain receptors being triggered, not that we can tell. It's alien biology, so maybe? It does seem to be incomplete, though. It's missing something, but we aren't sure what."

Baxter nods. "Let's try five milligrams of diazepam," he suggests. Yes, he wants to use valium on it.

Groot has posed:
Not Groot may be stupider but it still understands english and can read lips. So that is what it needs to do. He slowly seems to act calm and docile. The drug, of course does nothing and wouldnt for a while since his physiology is plant based, but it sure seems to as his skin color turns green and his eyes change color to a more normal almost blue and black. He rocks back and forth on his heels contendly, humming a tune wordlessly that in his own language would be "gonna kill you all lalalalal"

Baxter Stockman has posed:
The team nods appreciatively. "There we go," Baxter says, "Is it singing?" he asks.
"It does sound like that, sir," Lindsey agrees. "Interesting. That is likely a good sign."

Of course, they have no idea. "Very well, let's see about introducing the mutagen compound. It should stimulate a little growth. Make sure we monitor the progress, and record the cell division. And.... go." He points at the creature, and Lindsey moves forward the device, and the flourescent green fluid is injected into the small wooden creature.

Groot has posed:
And grow he does. The sunlight he has been absorbing in the last few weeks is burned off and he grows and grows and grows. Soon he is filling the container and roots and branches begin to fill it. Still, even now, so close to unleashing destruction he bides his harmless time....not going to rampage not going to kill them all. Everything is harmless and good and he is all but just a happy camper who responds to the mutagen better than Baxter could possibly imagine.

Baxter Stockman has posed:
"That...that's really good," Baxter says with surprise. "Any idea what may be missing still?" he asks.

"The best I can say," the tech says, "It's some protein, but we haven't been able to isolate which one.
"Very well, give it a little more to stay relaxed. It looks like we will need to lift the container. Of course, there's still the wall separating them, but he doesn't want the container damaged. "Prepare to give it the UV light, see how it responds."

Groot has posed:
The UV light helps and it grows more, pushing the limits of the container, but he really needs more plant matter, with enough of that he can crush them all. He still enjoys the light, and basks in it, preens in it, dreaming of fire for himself and his captors.
