Mairin Gets Visited by GIRL
Date of Scene: 31 October 2021
Location: Columbia University
Synopsis: Mairin accepted an invitation to join GIRL.
Cast of Characters: Mairin Moran, Nadia Pym-van Dyne

Mairin Moran has posed:
It's the weekend, which means the building is empty, aside from the random student working a project, the odd professor or lecturer doing some grading or prep for the next weeks lessons, and of course the occasional workaholic researcher. Mairin just happens to be the latter.

It isn't hard to find her. Anyone in the department can point someone to her lab. But getting into it is another matter. Top Secret clearance, badge access required and all that. But Mairin happens to not be in the actual QNCI lab. She's in the adgacent one, sitting at a computer with binders and notebooks strewn around her in the organized chaos sort of way only brilliant people have.

Nadia Pym-van Dyne has posed:
In recent years Nadia has become a bit better about actually using doors, still old habits die hard and she's not one to let a few security systems stand between her and a potential new recruit. Still, Mairin at least gets a courtesy not afforded to some of the earlier recruits in that there is a knock at the door to her lab, rather than someone simply appearing in front of her.

On the other side of the door is a young woman, on the young side even as undergraduates go. There is no mistaking her for a teenager. She's wearing an outfit like something out of a Vivienne Westwood catalogue, fashionable with just that hint of goth and punk influences. There is also no mistaking who she is, Nadia Pym-van Dyne. How she got in here at this hour with no appointments of any kind scheduled is anyone's guess though.

Mairin Moran has posed:
Either Mairin doesn't hear the knock, which seems unlikely given that it was quite clear and she's not actually that far from the door, or she ignores it. Either way, she doesn't look up from her notes and her fingers don't stop typing. In fact, the only motion of any kind at all is what looks to be a large moth roughly the size of a man's hand that flutters up from somewhere near her at the sound, perhaps startled into motion. It flutters up, then a bit closer to the door, then lands on a nearby chair and just.... watches Nadia.

Only from that range, Nadia can clearly see that this isn't a moth at all. At least, not unless moths have begun to morph into something far more like metal then anything organic.

Nadia Pym-van Dyne has posed:
Moths may not be of the Order Hymenoptera but both insects and robots are dear to Nadia's heart. Combining the two into insect robots is just plane cool. She gives a little wave to Robo-Moth grinning and makes a mental note to make some robotic wasp drones! Why didn't she think of that sooner?!

Not one to stand on formality and knowing what it is like to be lost in lab work, Nadia doesn't actually wait for Mairin to look up. When no immediate response is forthcoming, she steps around the ajar door and into the lab. She stops a comfortable distance from Mairin, not infringing upon the woman's personal space, but doing nothing to hide her own presence, waiting patiently.

Mairin Moran has posed:
The moth flutters back up into the air as Nadia passes it, and begins to orbit around her in erratic lurches before sweeping over to settle on Mairin's shoulder. Once there, it plays a soft tune that causes Mairin to jerk her head up and look around.

Back... forth... and *there* it is. That frozen look of surrpise that has her blinking her eyes vacantly as she stares at Nadia standing nearby.

3.. 2... 1... and there's the lurch up to her feet.

"Miss Pym-van Dyne! I... What brings you to Columbia?" Mairin fumbles as she hurries over to offer her hand. "I hadn't heard that you were going to be visiting, though I admit I've been on vacation the past week."

Nadia Pym-van Dyne has posed:
Amusement plays across Nadia's face at the startled reaction, she at least tried not to be stealthy this time, though more out of knowing the feeling and having been there herself than anything else. Though she reacts to being called miss about as well as any teenager might, in that she briefly makes a face before laughing it off. "No miss, just Nadia. I don't have any formal itinerary and didn't really want to attract attention, so I just sort of ducked around security." As one does, at least when one can freely control their size and has elite Soviet spy training.

"Actually, I'm here to see you. I've read your work on quantum phase state shifting and found it really interesting." She gestures towards the fluttering Robo-Moth, "-That- is really cool, too!" She doesn't even try to hide her excitement about the critter, wearing her emotions on her sleeve. "Anyway, last year I founded a new think tank and research collective, Genius In action Research Laboratories. Our primary objectives are to encourage young women in STEM and shatter the glass ceiling, providing more female role models for them to look up to and getting the truly talented who might otherwise get overlooked the resources they need to shine. We also sometimes collaborate with SHIELD and some hero teams to help them deal with Super Science threats. Anyway, it looks like you have a pretty good setup and funding here, but I was wondering if you might want to be part of that?"

Mairin Moran has posed:
"You.. I..." Mairin lowers her hand and takes a step back, her brow furrowing as she tries to take it all in. "The friends that Ghost Spider was talking about..." she says, more to herself than to Nadia. "So, you... want to hire me?" She doesn't sound disspointed by the idea.

Leaning back to sit on the desk behind her, she waves the same hand Nadia didn't shake in her direction. The moth leaves her shoulder to flutter over to Nadia, landing in her hand if she holds it out, on her shoulder if she doesn't.

"I mean... I'm flattered. Really. But I..." she laughs a little. "I'm hardly a genius."

Nadia Pym-van Dyne has posed:
Nadia perks up at the mention of Ghost Spider, "Oh you know Ghost Spider?" She grins, though it falters a few moments later as she seems confused by the use of the word hire, having never really thought of it that way. "I don't know if 'hire' is the right word. I mean we do have resources to offer members financial support. Huh, I never really thought of GIRL as a job, more a fun science club where I get to hang out with my friends and do cool science things to help people and make the world a better place. Oh and we have cool adventures sometimes too."

When Mairin says she is hardly a genius, Nadia just gives a little shrug. "It's not really about being a genius. I don't think I used that word, did I? I mean we definitely have individuals who can be called geniuses in our ranks. I don't think I've ever met anyone smarter than Valeria and the things Shuri can do with Vibranium are basically Clark's Third Law incarnate, but it's not really about that. It's about inspiring more young women in the sciences and giving people with cool ideas the resources they need to make those cool ideas a reality. I'm not even sure I like the word genius, I get called that a lot, but genius can take many forms. Iron Heart is a whiz at mechanical engineering and metallurgy, but if I start babbling about the fundamental nature of the Space Wall that seperates the Macro universe from the Microverse or the nature of quantum entanglement of photons and how that might be used in teleportation, her eyes kind of glaze over. Nevermind the genius of a brilliant painter or a gymnast. But if you don't want to, I'm not here to press gang you or anything. I just thought you might want to take those interesting ideas of yours and push them to the next level. No offense to Columbia, but our labs are decades ahead." There is a hint of mischief in the way she says it. Decades may still be being a bit generous, as good of an institution as Columbia is, the GIRL labs have access to equipment and restricted tech from the likes of Pym Technologies, Wakanda, the Fantastic Four and Stark Industries.

Mairin Moran has posed:
Mairin takes a step forward, raising her hand a little. "No! No..." she repeats a little shyly. "I didn't mean that. I just meant... Obviously I would love to have access to the kinds of knowledge and equipment that you have. It's... a dream come true. Really. And to work with all of those people... People I admire... You!" She takes a deep breath and lets it out. "I just... don't know that I would belong." She slumps back onto the desk and looks off to one side, a nervous blush coming to her face.

Nadia Pym-van Dyne has posed:
Nadia holds up her hands and lets them fall again, "Well, there's only one way to find out. Anyway, like I said, it is up to you. I can leave you to your work if you want time to think it over. No rush. Do you know where the Pym Technologies campus is? Our building is kind of hard to miss. If you decide you want to be part of things just show up. But, I will say this. I wouldn't be standing here if I thought you weren't a good fit for what we are doing."

Mairin Moran has posed:
She considers this... her brow furrowing. "No... No, I guess you wouldn't." She takes a deep breath and stands. "Thank you. I'd be happy to be a memeber. I appreciate you asking me." She chuckles. "Even if I'm not sure why. But this is an opportunity I can't pass up. I'll... do my best not to dissapoint you."

Nadia Pym-van Dyne has posed:
Nadia gives Mairin a bright grin from ear to ear, "Oh, I don't think you will. Just drop by our headquarters when you're ready and we can start the next steps. Welcome to G.I.R.L."

She turns to leave but no sooner has she stepped through the door than she seems to just disappear entirely, leaving Mairin in solitude once more.
