Super Science House Call
Date of Scene: 04 November 2021
Location: Emily's House, New York
Synopsis: Emily Roberts receives an unexpected visitor and an offer to join G.I.R.L.
Cast of Characters: Emily Roberts, Nadia Pym-van Dyne

Emily Roberts has posed:
A small single-story house in a quiet suburb; it likely wouldn't be notable at all if not for the shed next to it looking slightly more run-down than one might expect from the area. Even the residents themselves hadn't been particularly noteworthy until relatively recently. Just a retired elderly couple peacefully moving through their golden years.

Then their granddaughter became an orphan and needed a home.

At the back of the house, the last bedroom off the long hallway that seemed to divide it in two, the third resident Emily Roberts sits cross-legged on her bed with a laptop perched upon her legs. Headphones on to block out the world, and head bobbing as she lazily browses the internet for interesting new knowledge. It wasn't necessarily her favourite passtime. But after the... mishap in her 'lab' she'd been forbidden from entering the old shed; a punishment that had yet to be undone.

With a soft sigh, she opens up yet another tab in her internet browser, this one focusing on the potential adverse outcomes of high energy particle collisions, and starts reading.

Nadia Pym-van Dyne has posed:
Ever since founding Genius In action Research Laboratories (G.I.R.L.) just over a year ago, Nadia Pym-van Dyne has been on the hunt for female talent, particularly young female talent, that might otherwise get overlooked without the resources to shine or in some cases just need a safer environment to practice science experiments the regular world is just not equipped to handle. This coupled with GIRL's tendency to monitor science threats means there are few incidents like Emily's that escape her notice. The fact she was trained by a secret cabal of Russian assassin-spies doesn't hurt either. Luckily, Nadia is a lot nicer and more fun than the government Men in Black.

So it is that Nadia arrives at the dwelling of Emily and her grandparents, dressed in her usual casual clothes, a red and black plaid pleated skirt, a T-shirt with a stylized neon pink wasp design, and a pink and red bomber jacket with a metallic decal bearing the G.I.R.L. logo on the back. For a change, she actually demonstrates that she knows how doors work, or at least other people's front doors, by ringing the doorbell instead of just bypassing the obstacle.

Emily Roberts has posed:
"Just a minute!" While it's a female voice that calls out, it's an elderly one. Footsteps can be heard approaching the door and then, of course, it opens to reveal a woman with a weathered but smiling face and gray hair with a little copper left tied up into a bun.

Her momentary surprise is visible, as is the quick once-over she gives Nadia, but after her brows pull into a thoughtful frown for a few moments she grins. "Well, for a moment I hoped we'd be able to get some more Girl Scout cookies, but you must be one of Emily's new school friends!"

Without waiting for confirmation, the woman turns her head back towards the interior of the house and calls out "Emily sweety, you have a visitor!"

Nadia Pym-van Dyne has posed:
It's honestly a pleasant surprise for Nadia not to be recognized. The past year and a half has been a whirlwind from not even legally existing to being a hero during the Brainiac invasion, fighting with the Titans during the Warworld invasion, being the kid of Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne and even joining them as second string Avenger at times, not to mention founding GIRL at only sixteen. Needless to say all of the attention can be a bit much at times for someone who lived most of her life nigh anonymous.

Nadia smiles at the old woman. "Cookies! That's a brilliant idea, we could sell cookies..." The last part she says mostly to herself as if making a mental note. Everyone likes cookies after all, they could make super delicious SCIENCE! cookies! Nadia shakes off that train of thought pulling herself back to the present. "Hi! Yes, I would like to speak with Emily."

Emily Roberts has posed:
For a hopeful grandmother who has been worried about Emily's lack of friends, the confirmation that Nadia really *is* here to speak to Emily even if that's what she'd already assumed seems to take a weight off the woman's shoulders.

"Emily!" She calls out again, and at the lack of a response sighs and smiles wryly. "Just go on through, down the hall last door on the right. That girl always gets wrapped up in her own little world, I'm glad she's got someone to drag her out now and then."

She steps aside to allow the girl at the door to pass, gesturing down the hall with her hand as she adds "Oh, and if I heard right and you two are planning some sort of bake sale you be sure and let me know. I'd love to help out."

Despite stretching the length of the house the hallway isn't terribly long due to the house's small size. And as suggested, at the end of the hall on the right an open door leads into Emily's room, the faint sounds of far-too-loud music escaping her headphones audible as one draws close, along with mumbled song lyrics.

The interior of the room is fairly bland for a teenage girl; a single bed with a blue comforter spread over it, a small wooden desk and chair, and most notable a large bookshelf full of rather thick books. And, of course, one Emily Roberts sitting cross-legged on her bed oblivious to everything outside her laptop screen.

Nadia Pym-van Dyne has posed:
Nadia flashes the elderly woman an amiable smile, "Thank you! I definitely will if we go that route." There isn't really a bake sale, but she's heard rumors, legends, of 'grandma cooking'. This is filed away for later as she confidently strides down the hall.

Once she has reached the designated door, she simply opens it. Not having grown up as a normal teenager, she completely missed the 'come on would you /please/ knock first?!' phase. "Hello!" She waves in Emily's direction. "I'm Nadia. You're Emily right?" The last part is said a little quieter than the rest, not really wanted grandma to realize she doesn't actually know Emily from school.

Emily Roberts has posed:
The opening of the door is caught in Emily's peripheral, and thus she looks up just in time to see a complete stranger step into her room. She tugs her headphones off her ears (in the process making it very clear just how loud the volume was turned up) and stares in confusion at the girl opposite her.

It's only perhaps a second after Nadia introduces herself that Emily's eyes widen and she seems to connect the name to the strangely familiar appearance of the unknown before her. Visibly swallowing and doing a poor job of containing her excitement, the redhead seems almost afraid to ask her burning question and almost breathes out the words "Nadia... as in... Doctor Pym's daughter??"

Despite making no further sound, the 'squee' is visible in her facial expression.

Abruptly she realises just how audible the generic rock she's listening to is, and quickly mutes her laptop before returning her hopeful and excited gaze to the other girl.

Nadia Pym-van Dyne has posed:
Standing there in the doorway, Nadia claps her hands together and grins, "Oh! You know who I am, that makes things so much easier."

She steps into the room, closing the door behind her. "Yes, Hank Pym is my father and I am Nadia Pym-van Dyne. Building a particle accelerator in your basement, that's no small feat. How would you like a place where you could do that sort of thing... a bit more safely. About a year ago I founded Genius In action Research Laboratories to help encourage young women in stem, find the young female geniuses overlooked by the old boys club of science and give them the resources to succeed and inspire others. We also sometimes help other teams tackle super science threats and things like that. I was wondering if you'd like to join us?"

Emily Roberts has posed:
While initially excited, Emily's face quickly pales at the revelation that Nadia *knows* about the particle accelerator incident, or at least that she tried to make one if not the fallout.

While she'd have otherwise been over the moon to receive such an invite, all the redhead can manage is a hesitant and concerned, and perhaps slightly suspicious murmur. "I never said anything about having built a particle accelerator to Vivian. I was just asking if I could use yours. I guess... she must have gotten confused... haha."

Despite the words, Emily doesn't seem to believe that Vivian was confused. Very carefully she closes her laptop and starts to slide it off her lap, a strained smile on her lips as her eyes dart around as if looking for hidden cameras.

Nadia Pym-van Dyne has posed:
Nadia gives a little shrug, expression unshakably happy and upbeat. "Full disclosure, we fully investigate everyone we consider for membership and our head of security is frighteningly thorough. Though we've had a couple incidents, so it's kind of warranted..." She trails off. "Look, we're going to tell anyone anything you don't want them to know. That's not what we do. We deal with some of the most advanced technologies on Earth, PymTech, Fantastic Four Tech, StarkTech, all of it and more. There are a lot of people who would love to steal that tech, so we can't be too careful. I think you can do great things though and if you join us, you'll have the resources and equipment to do them."

She takes a step forward spreading her hands. "Vivian says you're brilliant, everything I've seen supports that, not that I would ever doubt my Great Niece." Great Niece? She can't be over seventeen, how could she have a great niece. "So, that's the offer. Want to help us change the world?"

Emily Roberts has posed:
There's a few more moments where it seems like Emily is still very much hung up on Nadia knowing things she shouldn't, but finally it seems that the reassurances work. Releasing a long and heavy sigh of relief, she clarifies just to be sure "So... I'm not in trouble, right? Oh my god, for a moment there... god."

Closing her eyes and shaking her head to dispell *that* train of thought, the redhead takes a few more slow deep breaths to calm herself down. Finally, with far more natural looking smile she nods her head "I mean, yeah I'd love to join Sign me up! I just wanted to use your particle accelerator for a bit, if I'm gonna get even more than that I'm totes on board! Just... uhh... you know the one I built kinda... blew up right? I mean, I don't want you like... making the offer under false pretenses y'know?"

Nadia Pym-van Dyne has posed:
Nadia gives a double thumbs up when Emily agrees. "You built it in a basement using sub-par equipment. That's not exactly ideal circumstances. The parts to safely build a particle accelerator cost a small fortune if you fabricate them yourself and a larger fortune were you to buy them. That you managed something semi-functional under those circumstances is incredibly impressive." There is no judgement from Nadia.

"You're not in trouble," She glances back towards the door and brings her hand up to her mouth like a conspiratorial whisper. "I've definitely done worse than a small crater," Before she straightens up again. "Failures are part of science, trial and error. Besides, that's one of the reasons we stand together as a group, we call all benefit from each other's talents and discover even more. If you want help with particle physics, just ask."

Emily Roberts has posed:
A faint blush appears across Emily's cheeks, and she awkwardly shrugs off the compliment. She bites her lip, and her hand slips underneath her ponytail to rub the back of her neck as she grins sheepishly "God, wow. I did *not* expect this when I woke up this morning. Now I feel a bit embarrassed about sending that long-ass email to Vivian when I coulda just said 'Oh I built a particle accelerator and it exploded'."

There's still a slight awkwardness to her, a hesitance, almost as if she's waiting for the other shoe to drop, but with a clap of her hands she does her best to exude all of the excitement obviously bubbling up within her. "So! Uhh, what do I need to do? Like, I guess there's probably like an NDA to sign. Uhh, do you... do my grandparents need to sign stuff? They're my guardians. Or uhh..." She trails off, giving Nadia a chance to actually answer.

Nadia Pym-van Dyne has posed:
Nadia stifles a laugh, "Science! is messy, that's part of what makes it fun." She winks. "I mean, yeah that would have worked. Explosions happen, they're nothing to be ashamed of, nobody died."

When the subject of paperwork comes up she pauses and for the first time falters a bit. "Uh, yeah they'll need to give you permission as your guardians. I'm not sure if we have an ND-what? We probably do. Janet and her lawyers handle all the legal stuff." Nadia may be a science genius but paperwork and bureaucracy is the bane of her existence. She waves a hand, as if dismissing the topic. "Just get your grandparents to agree. The rest can be sorted out later. When you're ready, come by our headquarters on the Pym Technologies campus, it's hard to miss and we can do the final security stuff and tour and whatnot. Cool?"

Emily Roberts has posed:
Emily has to try and stifle a confused giggle at the idea that the person recruiting her doesn't actually seem to know what recruitment entails. "Uhh, NDAs are Non-disclosure agreements. It's a contract to say I won't share any information covered by the contract with people I'm not allowed to by the terms of the contract. Or... something like that? I think they're pretty standard in like jobs and stuff where you're dealing with important secret stuff but I admit I don't really know the specifics. Never signed one before."

The entire unnecessary explanation seems more a way for the redhead to try and ground herself, the brimming nervous excitement of this whole meeting causing her to babble a bit in addition to the almost frantic way her fingers are twisting around each other. "But uhh... yeah! I mean my grandparents should be fine. I mean, I kinda got grounded after, y'know, the explosion. So I think Grandpa will just be really happy that I won't be accidentally blowing his stuff up. And, y'know, happy that I'll have proper tools and like... supervision and stuff. And Grandma is always going on about how I need to try make friends. What better place than a cool place with a bunch of other girl geniuses right?"

Nodding to herself in response to her own question, she grins. "So, I'll uhh... see you soon! I guess! Man, I can't believe Doctor Pym's daughter personally came to recruit me. Umm, is it weird if I ask for an autograph?"
