Cast of Characters: Harper Row, Phoebe Beacon, Tim Drake, Gabby Kinney, M'gann M'orzz, Cassie Sandsmark

Harper Row has posed:
November 18th, 2021: It's Harper Row twentieth birthday. As it is also a Thursday she spent her day at work and as it is the week before Thanksgiving, her brother Cullen was at school.

At work there was the obligatory grocery store birthday cake and the singing with the paper hats. Her boss didn't orgainze it but he hasn't ever suppressed the Party Planner in the office from doing this for people's birthdays... as long as the day's work gets done also (naturally it did).

After work, when she got home, she found that Cullen had made a lasagna and managed to time it so that it came out minutes before she arrived so that by the time she'd changed out of her work clothes it was rested. After dinner he brought out cupcakes (also acquired from a local grocery store). They talked for a bit before he had to buckle down on homework - the actual celebration was planned for the weekend when they plan to go bowling, what with it being a school/work night.

However, despite it being a work night, Harper slips out of the apartment and changes in the shed on the roof to go on a light patrol... more a roof top, freerunning exercise routine in full costue as Bluebird. While not expecting anything she's ready just in case. But she definately would prefer to just enjoy the activy on this cool autumn night as she has solid hopes not to cross paths with problems that might draw her into danger on this night of all nights.

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
    Crossing paths with Problems?

    In Gotham?

It's more likely than you think. On Bluebird's rounds, she may spot a shadow coming at her from the side, hood pulled low over her face, wearing matte gray armor with what looks like a single snake winding its way up a staff on her chestplate. The figure keeps up with Bluebird as easily as Harper makes her way across the rooftops, there's the sound of a grapple, a hitch of breath, and the capeless shadow swings across a particularly wide alleyway, coming to a skidding stop on the rooftop. The whited-out screen eyes of her domino are visible in the shadows cast by her hood.

"Good Evening, Bluebird." she states, and then she reaches in to her backpack , one hand up -- and she produces a brightly wrapped package in blue-and-purple foil wrapping paper. The bow's a little smooshed.

"I come baring a message. A little bird told me it's a Special Day."

Tim Drake has posed:
Even despite the smooshed bow, it's still a very nicely wrapped package. The edges are all crisp and perfectly folded, done by someone with enough care that they've put effort into making sure there are no signs of tape marring the shiny wrapping. It's the real heavy, bougie kind of paper too, the type that has weight and texture, and cuts like a breeze.

It's also possibly glued down, so it's a real pain in the butt for Harper to get open without some sort of blade.

But once she does--with one of her own or a borrowed knife from Phoebe, if it comes to it--it reveals... a box. Gasp, shock, etc. The box is about a foot square, black, and apparently under pressure because when Harper pulls the lid off the top the sides all fall away.

Colorful paper confetti and little bat-shaped cutouts explode into the air around her, and attached to a 3D printed base glued into the bottom is a standard Bat rebreather, the kind that fits over your mouth and nose, capable of removing just about any contaminate from the air and also providing a slight concentration of oxygen in low-air environments, in a pinch.

Watching through Balm's HUD, Tim lets out a wheezy burst of laughter onto the private frequency he has open in Phoebe's ear.

Harper Row has posed:
There's a momentary pause as the shadowy figure approaches Bluebird which is replaced by a dawning recognition that can still be seen in the provergial light of her eyes though her mask. "Hey there Balm," she says greeting the Outsiders' Magical Medic with a smile as she surpresses the urge to voice the word that passes though her mind at the mention of the little bird... ("Yum." In the sense of the iconic Red Robin restaurant chain commercials).

Then she opens the box and looks surprised as she says, "Woah, really?" and quickly follows it up with, "Is this from both of them or just Robin," in hushed tones to Balm as if she suspects this is information that the other woman would be able to provide.

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
"That one is from Red Robin. Who thinks he's very clever -- because he is." Balm gives a smile, and she motions with a nod of her head.

"Unfortunately not all of us can afford such generosity -- so I hope you'll accept --"

The hand goes back into her backpack, and pulls out a cheery thanksgiving/fall tupeware container, with bright blue and pink cookies.

"Homemade cotton candy sugar cookies." she offers. "I tried to catch you earlier. Slipped on a banana peel." she jokes.

Tim Drake has posed:
The confetti soon scatters to the wind that whips across the Gotham rooftops--don't worry, they're all made of eco-friendly biodegradable paper--except for one that stands out amongst the rest. Firstly in that it fell to the rooftop and stayed put, secondly that it is made of shiny red foil paper cut into the shape of, not a bat, but a bird. And it looks like it's folded in on itself, too.

And it will certainly stay there while Harper and Phoebe take a cookie break. In Phoebe's ear, she gets to hear a moment of obnoxious cookie-eating sounds from Tim too before he mutes himself.

Harper Row has posed:
Harper starts to speak excitedly and loudly but cuts it off before too much sound went out of her mouth. Speaking more sedately, she says, "Cookies. Thank you, Balm," as she opens the container and takes one, holding the ontainer out to the other Outsider to offer her one of them as well.

With a half joking tone in her voice she says, "So glad I was already working out what with all the sweets I've had today," before taking a bite and making an mmmmm noise of appreciation.

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
"Bah, trust me when I say as a medical advisor and magician that calories consumed on celebrations of celestial circumnavigations don't count." Phoebe gives a smile, accepting a cookie. They are indeed cotton candy flavored sugar cookies. Sugar sugar cookies; how novel!

She does, though, motion with her ring and pinky fingers downwards.

"Looks like Red Robin has an additional message."

Tim Drake has posed:
Indeed, upon the folded bird-note, in neat handwriting Phoebe will recognize as Tim's:

        Double double toil and trouble
Smog clouds burn and Cauldron bubbles

Upon the brow of our fair Herald
            Your next clue awaits imperilled

Harper Row has posed:
Upon reading the note, Harper chuckles before saying, "A riddle. Seems safer to follow his then the last ones I was following," to Balm. She seals the cookies back up and slips the container into backpack.

"The Cauldron on its own could be the neighborhood or an indy rock popup club I've been hoping to find but with the mention of 'our fair Herald' its clear that its the neighborhood...," Bluebird starts to explain to Balm, pausing a moment and says, "The newspaper's HQ is in the neighborhood on West Livingston Street." Before asking her semi-teammate, "Care to join me on a scavenger hunt?" with an inviting and broad smile.

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Balm gives a smile, and she gives a nod. "Sounds like a plausable explaination." the young woman states, and she checks her backpack, sweeping some of the bio-glitter off her shoulder as she takes a deep breath, and motions Harper on.

"Lead the way, Birthday Bird." she grins. "Let's go see what Red Robin's got in store."

Tim Drake has posed:
And off into the night they go! Whatever means the employ to island-hop from Miagani to Bleake, soon enough their expedition takes them to the quiet industrial area of Sheldon Park. This place is known to be something of a hotspot for organized crime of the fairly normal variety, with business fronts for the Falcone Family, Black Mask, and the like.

However, it isn't particularly common for the type of street crime that the Bats frequently intervene in to occur here. There's just not enough foot traffic at night for that, at least not of the type who would be worth the effort of mugging.

The Gotham Herald Building is the definition of the proto-Gothic Deco style that was beginning to emerge in the early part of the 20th century. It doesn't have the same sweeping architecture as more modern buildings do, but it is still an impressive six storeys, standing tall amongst its neighbors having withstood the test of time.

Up upon its roof, a gaunt figure seems to be teetering on the edge of the Herald's sign.

Harper Row has posed:
Rooftop crossing is easier when working with a partner. The transition from one island to another is handled by stowing away on the roof of a train. Once near the Herald building Bluebird calls for a slow down of their pace however.

"Any chance you have enhanced optics or 'mage senses' that can help you figure out who or what that figure is, Balm?" she asks her companion.

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Rooftop crossing can turn into 'Follow the Leader' pretty quickly; Phoebe's got a bit of a leg up. She's been running along rooftops and back alleys for a couple of years now, long before she'd even been an Outsider. She'd like to think something more than dumb luck protected the naieve girl then.

So as the two cross on the train, Balm adjusts her gloves a little, stretches her shoulders, preparing apparently for a fight.

So when the two make their approach, she looks up to the gaunt figure, and she narrows her eyes. She raises her hands, circles of silvery light forming on the backs of her hands before she states.

"... an old friend. No bones about it." she gives a smile, and looks up before she hops from the train, catching on a flagpole and swinging onto a rooftop.

Tim Drake has posed:
Indeed, it is a terribly ominous figure, looming over the edge of the rooftop. Its skeletal hand lifts from the dark, ripped cloth that enshrouds it, pointing far off into the distance...

...wait, is there something shiny and red in its boney fingers? Gotta get up there to find out!

Harper Row has posed:
Harper's a bit less practiced at the rooftop acrobatics then Balm, but she keeps up and starts laughing as she sees that the skinny figure is apparently a leftover Halloween prop skeleton. "Seems like it's not a threat at least," she observes towards Balm as she catches up with the young mage.

If Balm doesn't take the shiny read MacGuffin then Bluebird definately does so!

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Balm gives a grin. She's careful, but she might have an inkling in her ear watching for any other dangers. Or it's Tim eating more cookies. Honestly, she's OK with both.

The be-domino'd healer and magician stays crouched at the side, motioning Harper forward. It's her scavanger hunt, after all.

She should be the one with the foil in hand.

"How's it hanging, Senor Bonesalot?" she questions to the shrouded, mustachioed skeleton.

Tim Drake has posed:
It's another bird-shaped cutout of shiny red foil paper, with the same handwriting inside.

        Some hilarity for you:
            (546 * 19 + 8^3 - 326)/2

After the recent split between two heterographs
He went crying home to mummy.

Harper Row has posed:
After a glance at the shiny paper and a glance at Phoebe with a questioning expression in her eyes about the figures she nods in response to the I'll-beg-off-of-that-expression from Balm and pulls a phone out of her backpack and fires up the calculator app. "So, eight to the third plus five forty-six times nineteen minus three twenty-six and then take half of that... five thousald, two hundred and eighty."

"How's that amusing... OH! Do you see what he did there?" she asks Balm with a grin. Before any reply can be given she says, "Lets get there and figure out the rest once we're on site!" and starts moving off in the direction of the abandoned themepark that Senior Bonesalot is pointing towards and which is a major landmark for another section of Gotham to which it has lent its name.

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Phoebe had shaken her head at doing the math "You don't want me helping you. There's a reason why I'm a magician and not an investigator." she jokes, but she gives a grin. "Five-to-mate-ohs. Let's head down and find us a Mummy." she grins, and she goes to follow Harper to the coffee house, giving a hum as she goes.

It might just be 'Walk Like an Egyptian'.

Tim Drake has posed:
The hulking behemoth of the slowly decaying rides of Carson's Wonderland linger on the horizon, not far from Sheldon Park. Beyond it, the newer, glitzier attractions of Fun Land light up the night sky, though it is nearly empty at this time of night and this late in the season. Still, there are tourists about, walking the main thoroughfares that are the safest of the area.

Further afield, though, things are liable to get dangerous.

There's no reason for Bluebird or Balm to deal with any of that tonight, though! Harold's may be closed down for the night, but the door is curiously propped open, awaiting them. The museum-slash-shop-slash-coffee-house's most (in)famous resident is near the back wall, the mummified remains of... wait.

How did Senor Bonesalot make it over here so fast? And where's the bog body that Harold had cosplaying as a Pharaoh???

In the plastic skeleton's hands, folded over his chest, is another piece of red foil paper.

Harper Row has posed:
It's after hours so Harold's is closed but this doesn't deter Bluebird. The novice vigilante extracts a lockpicking gun from her backpack and kneels down in front of a back door. It only takes a few moments for the mechanical device to do its job and, with a twist of the knob with it in place, Harper is able to get the door open.

"After you," Bluebird says to Balm as she pushes the door open and then follows the mageling into the shop.

Having fully embraced the game, she laughs slightly when she sees the sparkling red, bird-shapped paper in the hands of (another?) mustachioed skeleton.

"Am I the only one thinking he's got us on a snipe hunt, Balm?" she asks the Outsider's Healer.

Tim Drake has posed:
One last clue awaits Bluebird, with that same steady penmanship:

        Good work, young bird
            You've flown the nest

        Now head back home
            It's time to rest.

...why there's a little scribble-doodle of a slice of steaming hot pizza is anyone's guess.

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
"I'm just following along since you have my tuppeware." Balm replies with a little grin, though after she steps in and looks around to Senor Bonesalot.

"Senor." she greets the skeleton, as if it were a teammate who's particularly speedy, and she doesn't think it's odd at all. She's all smiles as she looks over the note.

"Hmm... where do birds go to rest?"

Harper Row has posed:
Laughing at the fun of the whole thing, Harper answers with a simple statement of, "That's easy..." followed by a quick question of, "You can't teleport us back to the Roost can you?" which she just goes ahead and says, "Of course not, that would've been the highlight of your file if you could," before the pair grab another train-top ride from Amusement Mile to Chelsea where they clamber up to the roof of the Roost only to find...

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Phoebe gives an amused sound. "Teleportation's not my speciality." Phoebe admits, and she motions out. "Anything like that I have to rely on someone far stronger than I am."

But the two make their way up to the rooftop, Phoebe hanging back a little, since she was all part of The Plan.

Tim Drake has posed:
The reason Tim's been muted rather than chatting away in Phoebe's ear is not because he's been eating cookies this whole time, oh no. Well, he has been, but he's also been productive.

Up on the roof of the Roost, there are strings of twinkling lights and paper lanterns illuminating the well-tended garden. Colorful braids of crepe streamers flutter in the wind with paper bird cutouts add extra decoration, all in shades of... you guessed it, blue.

Well, Tim's had help setting that up. He's also had help getting Senor Bonesalot in place with his costumes and notes across the city.

There are blankets and cushions forming a casual seating area, and several recently-arrived pizzas from the Ultimate Slice waiting nearby with real glass bottles of sodas in a tub of ice.

And, of course, several Outsiders waiting for Balm's signal for the arrival of the guest of honor.

"Happy birthday!" Red Robin says, and more of that paper bat confetti is thrown into the air from the *pop pop* of party poppers as Harper arrives.

Gabby Kinney has posed:
Just like many of the other locales, Senor Bonesalot is here seated at a table. This time he's wearing a motorcycle helmet though, jaw hanging wide as if he'd perhaps had a very windy, speedy ride, upon the back of one and had not yet had a chance to regain his composure. Gabby sits next to him with her own helmet taken off to rest on the table in front of her. As the pair enter she jumps to her feet with a broad grin of delight, and raises her hands to set off a party popper. It's tugged firmly, and with a resounding POP it explodes sending a spray of colorful confetti into the air. "Happy birthday!"

M'gann M'orzz has posed:
Decorations everywhere! Streamers, ribbons, balloons, and of course party poppers. M'gann has taken careful notes cross-referencing several different sitcoms and is certain this is the best possible setup for an Earth surprise party.

There is also a cake, it has tiers, no really, did she think this was a wedding? and each of the three tiers is a different kind of cake. There are also intricate sugar sculptures in the shape of frolicking blue birds. M'gann's cooking adventures in the Outsiders kitchen are well known, but she really seems to have outdone herself this time.

"Happy Birthday!" She springs to her feet when they appear, colorful confetti shooting forth from a party popper in each hand.

Cassie Sandsmark has posed:
Cassie is at risk of being a little late, with all her constant commutes between cities for both school and her various hero team duties, and makes up for this arriving by a method somewhat faster han rooftop parkour: flying across Gotham at just short of speeds that tend to annoy the authorities. It's cutting things a little close, but she drops out of 'nowhere' to land on the roof near the whole birthday setup just before the guest of honor arrives. She's in Cassie Costume #2, which still isn't really a costume, but consists of a blue, red & gold 'WW' merch shirt, black skirt and tights, and throwover brown hoodie jacket.

Also, even though she's nearly late, she DID know there was a party and IS doing her part for the whole thing. Because apparently, she made a stop on the way over: her arms are filled with two brown grocery bags, packed to the tops with a variety of extra snack goods that Tim might have communicated would be necessary. Well, probably half ot is Tim's list, the rest is just whatever looked good!

"Did I make it? Ohshit here they-"

She hides the bags behind her back, as much as one can hide bags of that size. "Uh, happy birthday!" Does she even know Harper? NOT AN ISSUE.

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Phoebe, from where she sits on the side of the Root's roof, pulls out one of those little party buzzers that roll out, which looks utterly ridiculous concerning the rest of her Very Professional Gotham Vigilante costume. Especially since the little party buzzer is bright pink and blue.

Harper Row has posed:
... A surprise party! And this is Bluebird's first Outsiders social event, what with her not even being a full-on member of the team yet. She blinks at the cake also and smiles.

"Wow guys, this is amazing," she says sounding like she suddenly was hit deep in the feels and that she's finding that she completely feels at home with these people.

"Is there an official stance on the unmasking on the roof of the Roost?" she asks the gathered group, specifically directing it to Balm and Robin. "I assume its frowned upon but as some of you already know who I am I guess I want it to be official at this point," she adds so that it's been said officially.

Tim Drake has posed:
Red Robin manages to flash a quick, covert thumbs-up Cassie's way as she lands just in time for Harper's arrival. Then Harper's being engulfed in a cloud of Batfetti, and that gives him a chance to step back and help Cassie deal with the snacks.

Because it's always better to err on the side of 'too much' with the Outsiders.

"Thanks for making the snack run," he tells Cassie, as he starts unpacking one of the bags. It's a good mix of junk food and healthy snacks, because of course he's the type to put three kinds of chips on a list and then counterbalance that with fruit and veggies. Whatever, it all gets eaten in the end!

And then it's time for introductions. "Wonder Girl, this is Bluebird, one of our new members. The birthday girl." He grins, and then at Bluebird's question he shakes his head. "Up to you. The Roost is the tallest building in the neighborhood for a reason."

He glances around, weight shifting from one boot to the other, and then with a slow inhale Red Robin reaches up. The domino mask is peeled off, and then Tim extends a hand to Harper. "Happy birthday. Welcome to the Outsiders."

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Phoebe takes off her domino as well, and pulls back her hood. She's now recognizable as the girl the loudmouth in the trenchcoat had put into a bubble in the tree that one time outside the zoo, and she gives a bright smile as well.

"Welcome to the coolest group of friends in Gotham." the dark-eyed healer gives a grin, and clasps on Harper's shoulder a moment, looking to the rest of the crew with a grin.

Gabby Kinney has posed:
Gabby Kinney steps over as others begin unmasking, though she wasn't wearing one herself. Not unless those scars on her face were makeup as a means of disguising her identity. It doesn't seem so on closer inspection though. Still grinning she introduces herself, "Hi, I'm Gabby. Honey Badger," she informs as to what her code name is. "I'm not really so well-known that secret identities are an issue for me, yet, but I'm trying to follow the rules for Gotham and all. Congratulations and happy birthday!"

Harper Row has posed:
Removing her own mask as the greetings and introdutions are said, Harper smiles and says, "Bluebird in the field. Harper when in private or out of the uniform," as a way of introducing herself. She then looks at Red Robin and blinks in recognition and smirks at him in a We're-going-to-talk-later way while shaking her head and muttering something about her bother Cullen.

M'gann M'orzz has posed:
M'gann doesn't have a mask to remove, the is the mask, or rather the infinite amount of other faces she can assume depending on the situation are.

All the same she beams at Harper, "Welcome and congratulations! I hope you like cake! There's a lot of cake. Bart will probably eat anything you don't, but it is still a lot of cake."

Cassie Sandsmark has posed:
"Cassie works too," offers the so-called Wonder Girl as Tim makes the introductions, apparnetly weighing in on her particular care for secrecy as well. She does not seem the mask type! "Since so much of what Diana does is in the public eye, I kinda figured trying to play super secret was going to be a hassle. So, Bluebird huh?" And she looks back over at Tim, quirking a brow. "You trying to start a bird brand? Some kind of rebellion from Bat-dad?" She grins.

Carrying the other bag over with Tim to unpack, she peers at each item as she takes them out, and wonders, "Huh, I coulda sworn... well, I guess they coulda fallen out." The cashier at the grocery probably didn't pack the bag in anticipation of high-speed flight. "Hopefully they landed on Penguin's car or something."

"So yeah, welcome to the team, happy b-day, make yourself at home, all of that. You like sugar-Os?" What kind of weird things has she bought? "Though I'm sure T-" And here she does pause and do a little look around to make sure everyone is on the same page ID-wise. Cassie is actually TERRIBLE at keeping these (ask Kate Bishop!) but she's well aware of how the batlings like their secrets.

Tim Drake has posed:
Once more, Cassie gets flashed a quick thumbs up. No need for secrecy on his part; judging by that look from Harper, he knows she recognizes him. So Tim only gestures her towards the food, because there's a lot of it--pizza and snacks and CAKE and probably some of Phoebe's cookies too--before he steps away.

First, to hold his hand out to Pheebs for a fistbump. "Thanks for chaperoning the scavenger hunt," Tim tells her, and there's a smile growing on his face as he walks away, towards that enormous cake.

He puts his hands on his hips.

"So, when are we retiring from the superhero business so we can all work in M'gann's bakery?" he asks.

Harper Row has posed:
"I'm really looking forward to the cake but I've been known to eat Sugar-Os also, Cassie," Harper replies to Cassie. She then also says, "Yeah, Tim and I will catch up at some point I'm sure," acknowledging the name that wasn't said. "Bart and Conner already know my identity plus all three of the guys know where I live and work so... its not so much of a secret in this company at least," she explains quickly adding, "I have a brother though and he's not in the loop," before cutting a large piece of the top layer of the cake which she steps aside to eat while observing the ongoing interaction of her new teammates.

Phoebe Beacon has posed:
Phoebes walks over to tim, blows the party horn with its paper 'tongue' unrolling as she fistbumps her partner in crime, and then takes the streamer from her mouth.

"I already work in the food-adjacent business. Pretty sure Chas would be sad to lose his favorite dishwasher and barback." she shrugs, "But if M'gann makes a sweet enough deal --" she considers playfully, "The cake looks absolutely fantastic, M'gann."

And yes, there's the bright blue and pink cotton-candy sugar cookies. Phoebe made plenty.

M'gann M'orzz has posed:
"A bakery? Now there's an idea!" M'gann's expression lights up. "We could have cakes, and pies, and cookies, and croissants, and.." She leans on Tim for a moment and smiles at Harper. "I'm glad you like cake, come by the Roost's kitchen any time, there's usually something in there and if there isn't I can make you something. Though I often do that anyway while everyone is sleeping, it can get kind of boring sometimes waiting for everyone to wake up. But that's why TV marathons and cooking exist, I guess."

"I can make all the sweet deals, with extra chocolate. My bakery will lose to nobody's sweet deal!" She grins at Phoebe.

Cassie Sandsmark has posed:
"Cool, cool cool," Cassie acknowledges, ID worries handled. "I probably won't screw anything up then!"

After she's done making sure everything is unpacked from the grocery bag and spread around so that people can get at it as they like, Cassie's quick to make her way back to the center area where the best goodies are on display. Her eyes are big, taking it all in, and she looks like she can't decide over everything they have on display. Yet... maybe Harper has it right: cake does sort of take priority over the secondary snacks. Even the pizza! Because while pizza is pretty much an anytime food, if you randomly eat big frosted cakes without the excuse of a birthday or a wedding, people treat you like you're some kind of weirdo!

So she grabs a plate, a slice, and a spot amongst all that comfy seating Tim has set for them. "Professional baking? Pass for me. All evidence suggests I belong strictly on the consumer side of the food equation. You can count on me as a future customer, though!" She is way better at eating. "

Tim Drake has posed:
"Cronuts! M'gann, have you ever heard of a cronut?" Tim's helping himself to a piece of veggie pizza first, but somehow he ends up with a slice of cake on his plate right next to the 'zza. Well, thankfully he's not the type to get bothered by his food touching.

As everyone else fills their plates with the impressive food selection on hand, Tim too settles down on one of the cushions, next to Cassie.

It's late in the evening which means they can't be too loud, but it's also not a residential area, so maybe the Outsiders can get away with a little bit of celebrating. Nothing serious, but they're a bunch of superhero teens and young adults.

Birthday cake and sugary snacks and pizza are the perfect mix to sustain a party well into the night.
