Finsihing a First Day.
Date of Scene: 30 March 2020
Location: Entrance Hall - Happy Harbor High School
Synopsis: A new student meets two less new students and they go get burgers.
Cast of Characters: Naomi McDuffie, Samuel Morgan, Roy Harper

Naomi McDuffie has posed:
It had been a bit of a long day for Naomi. Constantly trying to find classrooms, going to classes she was not familiar with. Making sure she knew where they were in the school year and that she was keeping up. The whole incident in her home town and the like really messed everything up for her. Well, that and what she found out about her past. Now she's finally finishing up her day and is leaning against a wall in the entrance hall of the school, taking a look over some notes in her notebook and shaking her head slowly. Meanwhile, people are starting to clear out, either heading home or going back to their dorm room.

Samuel Morgan has posed:
There is one truism in Happy Harbor, and that's that there is always someone going the other way. Schedules that don't quite sync up, classes that are taught at unusual times, students who seem to come and go as they please and o pretty much whatever they want, within reason. Sam fell very much in that latter category, at least at first glance. While the rest of the school is heading out, he's heading in, a German Shepherd at his side. The dog, wearing a high visibility vest, steers the teenager away from the crowd of other teenagers making a break for freedom, and ends up sitting down right next to Naomi. New human!

And so, once again, Sam finds himself introduced to someone new through dint of Bear, giving Naomi a friendly nod, staying away from the rush streaming out the gate. "Hey there. Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm pretty good at remembering faces, and I don't remember seeing you before Spring Break. New?"

Roy Harper has posed:
Roy Harper is one of those characters that comes and goes here and there with little explanation. He does manage to attend his classes though, and since that's a marked step up from the past, it seems that most folks are satisfied with that. He's dressed in a pair of faded jeans and red chucks with a red hoodie on, his hands shoved into the pockets. No school colors today.

He grins a little when he sees the familiar Bear and Sam, and then glances over toward Naomi, taking her in as well. New face. And so he wanders in that direction, catching Sam's question as he approaches and hanging about to hear the answer, now that he doesn't have to pose it, himself.

Naomi McDuffie has posed:
A look up from her book, she blinks and then looks down to see the dog only to look up to see the guy with the dog. She reaches up to adjust the glasses she is wearing only to blink a few times, "Oh, yeah, I'm new here. I moved in at the end of spring break." She nods her head and then smiles down at the dog only to blink at Roy and smile at him as well, "Naomi." She offers, "Naomi McDuffie." She nods her head and then she looks down at Bear before looking up, "Am I allowed to pet him?" She tilts her head a little at Sam before smiling at Roy.

Samuel Morgan has posed:
"Not at the moment, I'm afraid, he's working." But Sam does extend a hand, and a smile, even if it looks like he's barely slept in the last 48 hours. "I'm Sam, Sam Morgan. Pleasure to meet you Naomi." His hands are calloused, to a degree unusual for anyone not used to frequent manual labor. Except he neither looks nor sounds like your typical midwestern farm boy.

"Welcome to Happy Harbor, home of the Seals as soon as we manage to assemble ourselves a sports team."

Roy Harper has posed:
"Roy Harper," he offers when Naomi offers up her name. "Junior. I mean.. third year student, not ... that my dad was also Roy Harper," he tacks on after the fact. "Nice to meet you." He glances over at Sam then and asks, "We have sports teams? I'm still trying to figure out what's going on with athletics since that first announcement that we'd find out later." He grins a little lopsidedly and shrugs his shoulders. "Welcome, Naomi."

Naomi McDuffie has posed:
A smile and she shakes Sam's hand before nodding her head, "I am a senior." She states to him and to Roy before she pulls back, "I probably won't be here all that long but it is where I gotta be for the moment thanks to the parents." She nods her head as she chuckles, "Not that I mind but that's just the way it is." She looks over to Roy and then back at Samuel, "Go seals, I guess." She nods her head and then she shrugs, "I hope to make some friends before I go but honestly, after all that happened back in Oregon, just kinda eager to get done and move on." She nods her head.

Samuel Morgan has posed:
"Sometimes you need to move to the other end of the country for reasons." A sage nod, and Sam remembers that other student he knows that had to quite quickly move away from the West Coast bonanza to the relatively obscure shoals of Staten Island. "It happens. I'm only from North Carolina myself, so it's not that bad. And you have Manhattan just a ferry away, so it's not all doom and gloom." A wink. It's almost a cheer up comedy routine at this point. So he needs to break that slapstick and turns to Roy.

"Haven't heard anything more than the name, myself. I'm hoping to join the football team once we have one." And what year is he in? Didn't say. In fact, didn't say it quite loudly.

Roy Harper has posed:
Roy Harper nods his head, "Know a few of the seniors. And I get that, the being ready to just move on with things.. thing." He looks out toward the exit and the world beyond. Maybe he feels that way, a bit, himself. "But.. I'm here for the next year and a half or so. So I guess I'll deal with that as it comes." Then he glances back toward the two of them. "Starling City." That's where he came from before arriving in Happy Harbor. He nods to Sam about the football team. "I was thinking of trying out for something. Maybe baseball." He has the arms for it, even if for entirely different reasons. "Or an archery club if they have one. I miss competing."

Naomi McDuffie has posed:
A smile at Sam and she nods her head, "I haven't really been anywhere but there and here." She nods her head, "Seems nice so far though." She nods her head and then hears the conversation change and she nods to both of their options before saying, "If I were sticking around, I wouldn't mind seeing something like archery. I have never done anything like that but it sounds fun." She rolls her shoulder and puts her notebook away, "For me, though, it doesn't seem all that important as in a few months I'll be moving on." She laughs, "I am just trying to survive these next few months." She smiles and reaches up to adjust her glasses, "Though, I will say, I have had more odd excitement here than I ever had back home."

Samuel Morgan has posed:
"Never be in too much of a hurry to move on. Live in the moment when you can, while you still can. New York isn't too bad, you might even end up staying." Bear gives a bit of an odd look towards his human and leans in against Sam's legs, earning himself a half distracted fuzzle between the ears. It erases the sudden distant look that had come over the teenager, and seems to return him to his amiable self. "Archery sounds fun. There's a fencing club being organised by one of the new teachers, been looking forward to his engineering class all through the break."

Roy Harper has posed:
"I've been doing it since I was a little kid," Roy says, when Naomi mentions never having done anything like it. "If you ever want to learn before you go, hit me up." He seems happy to teach if she's interested. "But yeah, I get that -- just trying to make it through." He slides his hands into his pockets and leans up against a spot of wall on the opposite side of Naomi from Sam, relaxing there comfortably.

He grins a little bit as he watches Sam and Bear interact, his attention shifting down to the dog and then back up toward Sam. "Fencing sounds cool, too. That's another sport I wouldn't mind picking up." He flashes a grin. "I'll have to check it out."

Naomi McDuffie has posed:
A smile to Samuel and she laughs, "I intend to stay in New York. Probably." She nods her head, "Just not really here." She nods her head before looking over to Roy, "I'll keep that in mind." She nods her head to him before she crosses her arms and looks over at Sam again, "Fencing might help me out. I don't know. I have been thinking I should have some way to fight even if not with my hands." She laughs a little to herself and then looks down at the dog briefly before up at Sam, "So, what was North Carolina like?"

Samuel Morgan has posed:
"Bit less crazy than New York, that's for sure. But I lived around Lake Marion, so ... probably not the most happening place in the state. Lots of seasonal tourists, hated their guts." There's a slight hesitation in that answer, but not too much, although Bear now has to deal with a whole hand kneading him behind the ears. Honestly, the Shepherd doesn't seem to mind, giving a comically melting happy face impression, including full tongue lolling action, and sets his tail to 'wag'. Something kicks Sam in the memory, /hard/, and he suddenly hopes that neither of his two friends are geography enthusiasts. Crap crap crap crap crap!

Roy Harper has posed:
Fortunately, Roy knows which state North Carolina is, and where Charlotte and Raleigh/Durham are, and that is the extent of his entire North Carolina knowledge. So, if there's something to be known geographically, it slides right on past him and on out the door. "Guess there's a little more excitement to be found in New York, then. You ever miss it?" he asks Sam, curious, perhaps. "I went back to Starling the weekend before break for a while. See my uncle."

Naomi McDuffie has posed:
A smile and she nods to Samuel, "Yeah, we didn't really get tourists where I came from in Oregon. We didn't even have a Wal-Mart." She laughs a little before shrugging and then turning her gaze over to Roy, "Starling? I heard of the place but never been. Of course, like I said, I've never been to any of those places." She shakes her head, "I suppose I really should spend some time seeing more than here and where I came from." She laughs a little while looking a little awkward, "So, hopefully you had a good trip?" SHe looks to Roy.

Samuel Morgan has posed:
"Never been to Starling. Or Oregon for that matter." Not for long at any rate. Sam has been many places for some very short, very intense visits, meeting interesting people quite briefly. Bear's ears have perked up, noticing his human relaxing. Yes human! Speak with more humans! It helps you relax!

"What's it like? Starling I mean and... where in Oregon are you from, Naomi? Bit of a big place."

Roy Harper has posed:
"There's no real reason to go to Starling unless you live there," Roy says to Naomi, reassuring her that she's not missing a whole lot. "I just went back because my.. family's there." There's a slight hitch there, a little pause, but then he just continues on. "Anyway, you should definitely explore while you're here.. both Happy Harbor and New York, in general. There's a lot to see." He shrugs his shoulders, "It was alright. I wasn't really thrilled with my uncle for sending me here. But.. it's not so bad." There's a bit of tension there, but it ebbs once more and he smiles. "It's a place, kind of like most other east coast cities, just smaller than here, really."

Naomi McDuffie has posed:
"Ever heard of Colton?" She asks and tilts her head, "No, neither has anyone else." She laughs a little and shrugs before nodding over to Roy, "And I intend to but I got a lot to get used to." Ya know, like transforming into what equates to a demigod. Either way, she turns her gaze over to Sam briefly before adding, "And, don't go to Oregon. It's boring." She nods her head before looking back to Roy, "I hope to see a lo tof things before I finish up with school."

Samuel Morgan has posed:
Bear seems to have decided that something is required, and looks up to Sam. The teenager looks down into the Shepherd's eyes with a questioning frown, and something unspoken seems to pass between them. Then follows a shrug, and Sam seems to have understood the meaning of that intervention. "There's a tradition when you join the school..." he begins, smiling towards Naomi. "Or, as close as this school can come to a tradition anyway."

"Either before your first day, or after your first day, you need to go to Happy Burger to have their Happy Burger. You're not a proper student here until you've eaten there. What do you say? My treat. Want in on this Roy?"

Roy Harper has posed:
"Nope, can't say as I have," Roy says with a shake of his head when asked if he's ever heard of Colton, though that comes as a surprise to no one. He smiles a little wryly and nods and says, "Yeah, well, take your time getting used to stuff, too." He has no idea what it is that she has to get used to, but he can imagine anyone having to move from another state probably has /something/ to adjust to.

The mention of a tradition draws his attention back to Sam and both brows go up a little bit, wondering if he'd missed a tradition along the way somewhere. Then the mention of the burger joint gets a grin and he chuckles, "Yeah, sure. Let's go grab burgers. I'm starving."

Naomi McDuffie has posed:
"I am always down for a good burger." She nods her head as she shifts slightly, "And tradition?" She laughs a little, "Hasn't this place only been open a short time?" She grins, "Sounds like someone just wants a burger but I'm totally game for it." She nods her head, "Gonna have to be good though. Max back in Colton could make a mean burger. Not much in Colton but the diner I worked at had good food."

Samuel Morgan has posed:
"Traditions start somewhere. We may not have a long and storied history at this school, but I will let you know that we were founded four score and twenty... days ago. Y'know. Roughly." Exit tourguide mode, engage friendly grin. "This way, and may our humble purveyors of grease and mostly genuine meat products rise to this challenge." The only thing more prone to showmanship than a bored Sam is a sleep deprived Sam. And dammit, he just got back from Korea, he has earned himself a burger.

Roy Harper has posed:
Roy Harper just laughs, seeming more than content to go along with this new tradition since it involves burgers, and burgers are good. There's a little shake of his head at Sam's showmanship, but it seems an amused one. "Sounds like a good tradition to me. No way to keep at tradition alive like.. you know.. keeping it alive." And with that, he pulls away from the wall and begins to head out of the entryway, leaving the school behind for the promise of burgers and fries. "They have damned good fries, too."

Naomi McDuffie has posed:
"Ok, sure." She grins and nods her head, "I'll buy that." Naomi nods with a smile before she pushes away from her spot and starting to head toward the exit as well, "So, I'm assuming this is a favorite place of students or something?" She looks over and then forward, "I personally could use a new hang out for food as all I have now is fast food restaurants and whatever I can scrounge up."

Samuel Morgan has posed:
And joining this procession, not quite twirling a baton but at the very least accompanied by the ever cheerful Bear, is Sam. Whatever he was coming to the school to do can clearly wait. "There's a few spots in the city I can recommend, but not their prices. Not as bad here, being the less fashionable island and all, and a lot of people hang out in the burger place." It is, in fact, where he first met several of his fellow students, just before the school opened. See? Tradition. "Welcome to the school, Naomi, and I hope you enjoyed your first day."

Roy Harper has posed:
"That's true," Roy agrees. "It's where I ran into my first friend at the school." Maybe his only friend at the school. "And yeah, everything in Manhattan is crazy expensive. But it's fun to go hang out there from time to time." He strolls along at an easy pace as they go. "What places do you recommend?" he asks Sam. "I've only been a few places, really, since getting here." That he'd admit to being to his classmates, anyway.

Naomi McDuffie has posed:
The welcome has her smiling as she looks over at Samuel and nods to him, "Thanks a bunch." She then nods, "Oh, I learned about the expensive of Manhattan on day one when I just wnated to try a hot dog." She sighs and shakes her head before she looks over to Roy a moment and nods to him before looking back to Sam as they head toward the burger place and listens to all the fun places of Manhattan that Sam knows.
