Happy Harbor: Weekly Check-In
Date of Scene: 04 December 2021
Location: Central Plaza - Happy Harbor High School
Synopsis: The students at Happy Harbor get a karaoke evening!
Cast of Characters: Morrigan MacIntyre, Madison Evans, Keli Quintela, Vivian Vision

Morrigan MacIntyre has posed:
Some probably heard that Karaoke was going on at the school on Saturday and well...there were some that were excited and there were some that had made it clear that they were NOT going to be making an appearance. Because public performing is weird to some. There is a gaggle of teens that are perusing the song menu in the big binder and there are a few giggles as some songs are pointed out.

Tiyo, Happy Harbor's new Japanese popular kid has made it a point to show up fashionably late to the event with a few other teens in tow. Chasha and others have settled off to the side and are in quiet conversation as people start to take their turns singing.

There are refreshments for the afternoon and plenty to munch on until things end around dinner. Duncan is on deck currently to watch over things, but just observing and letting the teens have their fun.

Madison Evans has posed:
Look - Madison is not known for showing shame of embarrassment, so she's right up there looking over the list of songs and suddenly exclaining, "Oooo! Ooo! Let's do some Queen! We should do, umm... We Will Rock You! And Bicycle Race!" she suggests, waiting eagerly for the ideas to be put onto the list.
Tonight the teen is wearing a band t-shirt in honor of the Karaoke event - but of course it's not just any band. Nope, it's the Max Rebo band, complete with its strange elephantine front man. She bounces up onto her toes once or twice while she waits - but once she sees her songs programmed onto the list, she runs off to the refreshments table - securing a slice of pizza to enjoy until her turn comes up.

Keli Quintela has posed:
Keli's new, and only just starting to poke her head out of getting her dorm room set up, so she hovers at the edge of things for a moment before she notices at least /one/ face she recognizes. She doesn't run right on up to Madison, though--that would be kinda weird, right?--and instead goes to find out if there are any Spanish songs in the book. (Please let there be Spanish songs in the book!)

Assuming there are, indeed, Spanish songs in the book, Keli puts in a couple and then makes her way over to get some pizza. Everyone can appreciate pizza.

Vivian Vision has posed:
Vivian always wears her school uniform for school functions. Even though it's not mandatory there's a certain formality which fits in with the school environment. But it does rather help people tell she's a student and not a robot there to assist around the school.

When it comes to the singing part... Well she's rather less confident. Having never sung before in her life. Still as a synthezoid she can always fall back on her ability to perfectly replicate any sounds.

Is that cheating? Yes. Is it better than public humilation? Yes.

Morrigan MacIntyre has posed:
Duncan is giving one of the students a thumbs up after a question is asked of him, "It's no problem and there's no cursing. Doctor MacIntyre got the safe for school package." he tells the girl that came over. She gives a nod to him and then hurries over to the group of girls that she was sitting with and proceeds to get into a whispering match with them.

Kids were weird, alright?

The machine is ready for it's next guest. Who would be brave enough to go?!

Madison Evans has posed:
Madison is still mid-pizza slice when she sees 'We Will Rock You' come up on the screen. "Oh gosh!" she exclaims. That was faster than she was expecting. She hastily swallows the bite she was chewing, looking around for her usual friends - but spotting none of them. What is she going to do?! She'd wanted it to be a group song!
Poor Keli gets snagged just by virtue of being nearby. "Kathy, right?" she tries. I mean - it's almost close. "Come sing with me!" Madison invites, trying to take the poor girl by the hand, and lead her towards the mics. "It'll be fun!" she promises, assuming that //everyone// in the world knows We Will Rock You.

Keli Quintela has posed:
"Keli," she says, eyes a little wide. "And I... I mean I kinda..." Well, there's words on the screen, right? And they play it on American television things. So... what the heck? Keli lets herself be led up to join Madison in singing 'We Will Rock You.' Enthusiasm! That's the ticket.

Vivian Vision has posed:
Vivian Vision clasps her hands behind her back and stands rather prim and proper. Observing the event curiously.

A portion of her mind gets assigned the task of researching karaoke etiquette while another sets about downloading every song within the machines database.

The virtual Vivs on song duty then further split to listen to hundreds of versions of every song. From live performances to album releases and cover versions. From there it's a simple matter to map her own vocal patterns over the various songs and run a predictive model to work out which would suit her best.

Not that she currently plans on volunteering! It just never hurts to be prepared.

After each song she applauds politely. Because it's important to acknowledge the effort people are putting in. Even if she can't really guage how well they've performed.

Madison Evans has posed:
Enthusiasm is key - at least with 'We Will Rock You,' and while Madison may not have much skill, she has enthusiasm in spades.

"Buddy, you're a boy, make a big noise,
Playing in the street, gonna be a big man someday!
You got mud on your face, you big disgrace,
Kicking your can all over the place, singin'!"

As the song gets into the 'We will, we will, rock you!' part, she starts gesturing to the other students who aren't holding mics to join in, calling loudly, "Com'on! Everyone sing it!" There's a huge grin plastered on her features - somehow, it seems like Madison doesn't care if she's making a fool of herself or not. This is //fun//.

Keli Quintela has posed:
Keli does not know the words to the verses at /all/, but she sings the chorus with gusto. And she's not... tone deaf or anything, but she's not exactly a practiced singer, so it's going to be kind of weird and warbly, but look--you can impress your peers with your skill or you can be the fun, confident one, and Keli's /way/ better at the second.

She does /try/ for the second verse with Madison, though.

"Buddy you're a young man hard man
Shoutin' in the street gonna take on the world some day
You got blood on yo face
You big disgrace
Wavin' your banner all over the place!"

Vivian Vision has posed:
If there's one thing which a good karaoke night needs, aside from the alas forbidden alcohol which online research strongly recommends, it's a good light show to accompany the singing. And even if the school has got the full karaoke package it probably can't compare to a synthezoids holographic projection system.

So to liven things up Viv projects a full on laser show. Borrowing elements from famous performances of 'We will rock you' to add a touch of authenticity. But adjusting them to better fit the pace and delivery of the two singers.

Morrigan MacIntyre has posed:
Duncan looks up when the light show starts and there's a bit of an amused smile, "Nice one, Miss Vision!" he calls out. Because hey, Duncan's an adult, but he's not like...an adulty adult. He's just one of the faculty and Morrigan's right hand. He makes sure that pizza and other food options are kept tidy and drinks are cold and aplenty. He seems to be at home in this setting and doesn't mind caretaking the teens as they sing and converse.

Madison Evans has posed:
"That's it!" Madison says excitedly, giving Keli a high five as she joins on the second verse. She also tosses Vivian a broad smile and a thumbs up as the lightshow starts - bringing the song home into the final verse.

"Buddy, you're an old man, poor man,
Pleading with your eyes, gonna get you some peace someday!
You got mud on your face, big disgrace,
Somebody better put you back into your place, do it!"

She sings loudly in the final chorus - without relying on the mic, as she claps her hands in her continued effort to get everyone involved in the song. As the final notes die out, poor Keli abruptly finds herself the recipient of an enthusiastic hug - assuming the girl doesn't back away or put her hands out to stop it. "That was great!" she exclaims as she hands the mic off to someone else. "Keli. Sorry I got your name wrong," she says hastily, beaming at the other girl with her never ending supply of enthusiastic cheer.

Keli Quintela has posed:
Keli seems quite happy to return the hug. She might be hesitant about joining in on things at first but she's no wallflower--she's just feeling out the local culture still, unsure of when and how to do things. But there's singing! And light shows! Which are /very/ exciting. "Thanks! It's no problem. That was fun!"

She searches the crowd for the source of the light show. "That was really cool! Do they do that all the time? The lights, I mean."

Vivian Vision has posed:
There's no apparent source for the lightshow. Viv simply thinks and there is light. Although she's also clearly not a normal human girl with the green hair, reddish pink skin and glowing yellow eyes. So perhaps it's not hard to guess that maaaaaaaaybe she's involved somehow.

"It was the least I could do to contribute," she replies to Duncan. "If I had known in advance about the event I would have offerred to provide the audio system as well."

Morrigan MacIntyre has posed:
Chasha, one of the new students approaches Duncan and asks a question of him. There is quiet conversation for a moment before the shy girl gives a nod to the faculty member and then heads off towards the wing where dorms are. Duncan then gives a look to Vivian, "You know, we'll remember that the next time we do this. Production is probably a lot more quality than renting." he admits. "Only if you'd want to do that and you can have fun as well." he adds.

Madison Evans has posed:
"Oh, it's probably, ummm- well. One of the students is an artificial, sentient... robot person? I mean, basically. And she projects stuff. So when stuff gets projected, it's usually her. I can introduce - com'on!" she says brightly, taking Keli by the hand, and leading her through the other students towards Vivian.
"Viv! Hi! This is Keli - not Kathy, that's silly, who would call her Kathy? - definitely Keli, and she's new, and she's curious about the stuff you can do - can you make me look like a twi'lek from Star Wars? With like... hrm... lavender skin?" she requests. No, she doesn't pause for breath in any of that. She must have circular breathing down pat.

Keli Quintela has posed:
Keli lets herself be dragged away by Madison. "A sentient robot? Oh my /god/, I /love/ robots, I am the /biggest/ Red Tornado fan--"

She stops babbling as Madison drags her over to actually introduce her, eyes getting /very/ big. "Hi!" she manages with a squeak. "I'm Keli," she repeats, needlessly. "You're a robot? I mean, sorry, that's rude, it's nice to meet you!"

Morrigan MacIntyre has posed:
Duncan gives a smile as he heads over to get himself a slice of pizza and a soda. Time to sit down for a minute and enjoy things. The tall man stretches his legs out in front of him and takes a bite of his pizza before getting an idea as Declan heads up to sing, "Play Freebird!" he calls out with a laugh.

Vivian Vision has posed:
"Oh. Yes that would be no trouble," Vivian replies in answer to Madisons request. Thankfully the request is broad enough Viv can select a Twi'lek in a costume that's age appropriate. "It's a pleasure to meet you Keli. I'm Vivian Vision, Viv for short, and technically I'm a synthezoid. The main difference being I'm capable of fully independent thought and have free will. While a robot is simply a computer controlled machine."

There's a pause while a portion of her mind maps Madisons features to the holographic image to ensure she's still clearly the same person.

"I will have to find time to properly introduce myself and converse further, but sadly it seems I do not have time to perform. I've received a notification about an experiment I'm needed for at the G.I.R.L. labs."

Madison Evans has posed:
When the image of the twi'lek is projected over herself, Madison looks down at her hands, then gives a little twirl for Keli's benefit. "Whatcha think?!" she asks eagerly. "It's like what Reagan does - only Viv can do it on other people! And she uses technology, obviously, rather than like... some sorta biological based super power. I think it's fun," she says brightly - before grinning at Viv. "You don't need to keep the projection up - I just wanted to show Keli. Good luck with your experiment!"

Keli Quintela has posed:
Keli's eyes go /even/ wider. "Oh, wow! We won't keep you. Have fun! Good luck! Oh, I'm jealous," she turns to Madison, "GIRL is /amazing/, I really need to go there and show them my gauntlet once I've got it working. You look good as a twi'lek!"
