Date of Scene: 26 December 2021
Location: Sara and Cael's apartment
Synopsis: Sara gets Artemis on the way to understanding life, law and culture outside of her own.
Cast of Characters: Sara Pezzini, Artemis

Sara Pezzini has posed:
After seeing to the police reports regarding the gang bangers who attempted to 'assault' Artemis, Sara headed back to the apartment she shared with Cael. The trip from the precinct to the apartment had been a lesson in and of itself, as clearly Artemis has never ridden on a motorcycle, let alone on the back of one. Two near misses and Sara had it down as to how Artemis moved.

The apartment wasn't a fancy place, two bedrooms, a kitchen and a large living room, but for an NYPD Detective and an FBI agent, both who also worked with SHIELD, it was more than enough. Sara showed Artemis inside, leaving her helmet by the front door before heading down the short fall to the living room.

"Make yourself at home," she offers as she removes her leather jacket and then the loose jacket that was used to conceal the shoulder holster and her police issue side arm.

Artemis has posed:
The motorcycle was a new experience, but for someone trained in mounted combat, the general concept was the same - don't shift too far off balance. She may let out a whoop or two however, as the speed of the motorcycle is a bit exhilarating. Once they arrive, she follows Sara up to the apartment.

When Sara tells her to make herself at home, there isn't much for her to do beyond sitting down. The hooded cape had been folded up and stowed in a small pack she had been wearing under it, as wearing it while riding the motorcycle would have been a terrible idea. The pack is dropped beside the sofa and she takes a moment to look over the apartment from where she sits.

"I am not entirely sure how I managed to upset your friend so badly, but it was not done on purpose. Does she often succumb to such anger?"

Sara Pezzini has posed:
The jackets are both hung on a hook by Sara's bedroom door before she runs her fingers through her hair and looks around the room. The usual 'did anything get moved' check to indicate if someone had been there.

"Yes," she states bluntly. "Cael isn't afraid to state her mind, even in anger, if that's what her mind is telling her. I'm the same way, which is why we usually work so well together. Open communication."

She heads back down the hall to the kitchen to put some coffee on. "Would you like something to drink or eat?" she calls out. "Got some juice that hasn't gone back, looks like left over pizza is on the menu... I'm making coffee as well."

Artemis has posed:
"I would not mind some of the pizza, but perhaps just water with it. I have tried juice and pizza before, and they did not mix flavors terribly well. But as for Cael, I was more wondering why she got so upset, not that she spoke her mind. It seemed just a bit excessive to the situation, after all, nobody got badly hurt. I was merely trying to make it understood that he should not touch me without my permission. I would not have actually choked him."

She is still looking around the living room even as she speaks, then adds "This is a pleasant enough place, but it hardly looks lived in. But then, as one of the protectors of a city this large, you must not be here all that often."

Sara Pezzini has posed:
Pizza goes into the microwave for a quick zapping, while Sara gets a couple of bottle of water out of the fridge. Taking the water and pizza back into the living room, she sets them on the coffee table before she herself sits on the couch. Coffee will take a little time to brew.

"Whether you would have choked him or not," she begins. "To people like Cael and I, that is excessive force. According to the law your response to their actions needed to be of equal force, in other words.... you get shoved, you shove back, not you get shoved, you shoot a man in the face. Cael was angry about the amount of force you used in return, and legally, she's right, we should have arrested you as well."

She sighs, beginning to unhook the shoulder holster but decides she doesn't want to go all the way into her room right now, so leaves it. "You also have to understand that Cael is a normal human being, no special abilities or powers, no magical weapons, nothing like that." She continues, sitting back for now. "She believes, and rightfully so, that those of us /with/ those sorts of things, still need to be held to the same standards of law as everyone else. The only reason you aren't in a jail cell right now is because I can put two and two together and realize, you have no idea about the law here, or that you broke one."

Artemis has posed:
Artemis nods, "I will keep that in mind for the future then. You do seem to have a very confusing set of laws from what I have seen, with rules for just about everything. Where I come from a person knows their place and duties. But then, we are much less numerous than you are here. However do you manage to keep so very many people safe all the time?"

She picks up a slice of pizza and takes a bite, then opens the bottled water and drinks. Looking over to Sara, she asks "So, unlike Cael, you have some form of powers then? No doubt that helps you in your position."

She pauses for a moment, then tilts her head slightly and asks, "How does Cael manage to do her job with no powers? From what I have come to understand, there are many with powers who choose to use them to enrich themselves or harm others, how does someone like her stop them?"

Sara Pezzini has posed:
The coffee pot beeps to announce the magic brown liquid is ready, so Sara heads back to the kitchen to get herself a cup. Sugar and a splash of cream go into the cup and she walks back down the hall stirring.

"To be honest, we don't keep them all safe all the time," she answers plainly with a sigh. "We try, but there's no way it's possible with so many out there. Parents are expected to teach their children to follow the laws, respect the police, that sort of thing, but even the police force is formed of normal human beings who are rarely trained properly... it's a huge mess."

Back onto the couch with her coffee, Sara continues. "The truth, we do the best we can but we fail more times than succeed. Regarding powers..." she takes a small sip of the coffee before the cup gets to rest on her leg. "I don't know enough about you to give you the details of myself, but I can tell you that I am more than I appear and yes, I have access to certain power. The majority of the country here is normal humans, and as such the majority of law enforcers are also normal humans. When someone with powers acts against humanity, or even just humans, there are organizations with super powered people that step up to deal with them. The Justice League, the Avengers, and SHIELD are three I can name off the top of my head. Most cities have some kind of group, usually small, for such things, and those that don't rely on the larger organizations for aid. The Justice League and Avengers are more world wide to be honest, but they will help out in cities if they can."

Artemis has posed:
Nodding, Artemis takes another bite of the pizza before saying, "I see. I can certainly understand parents teaching their children, but it does sound like there are a great many of those children who do not listen as well as they should. I imagine it is a problem that comes of having so very many people around. Where I come from, if someone is a problem, it is obvious and dealt with quickly, but here it would be impossible to know and keep an eye on everyone."

Chewing pensively, she seems to think about it for a moment, then swallows the bite she was working on. "I would offer to help, but I have my own mission to try and fulfill. Not that I have any good ideas on where to start, but I still must try."

Sara Pezzini has posed:
Now that she has the coffee, Sara can truly get comfortable, so the shoes come off and she folds her legs up onto the couch. There were probably special units in SHIELD or even someone among the Avengers who were better suited to explaining all this to a new arrival like Artemis, but it was late and she wasn't waking anyone up for it.

"We all have our own missions, even I have one that has nothing to do with being a cop or part of SHIELD," she shrugs a little. "That doesn't mean you have to help, or even consider helping, but I'm afraid I can't let you go wandering around New York until you have a better understanding of the way things are done here."

Leaning forward, she sets the cup on the coffee table. Too hot to drink right now, and though she can heal the burns rather quickly, they just aren't worth it. "The system broke down a /long/ time ago," she then says. "Kids with only one parent, that parent working two jobs and thus never home, so the kids are left to their own devices. Homelessness, where you have to beg, borrow or steal to survive, and a few hundred other things that make it impossible for the system to work. Trust me when I say I wish it worked, I wish people didn't turn on each other, but I think it's also part of human nature."

Artemis has posed:
Artemis shakes her head, saying "The world of men is truly incomprehensible sometimes. So many people just out for themselves, no pride or sense of community. It is no wonder they need so many people to enforce the laws, which can also vary from place to place. I would like nothing better than to be home, but that is impossible, so I must learn how to live here and by your rules, it seems."

Looking as Sara, she asks, "Where would be the best place to learn such things? I cannot impose on you for very long, so I must learn the ways of this place as quickly as I can. I have things I must do, and I will not get them done if I am constantly butting heads with your laws."

Sara Pezzini has posed:
For a moment Sara has to consider the answer to that question. The honest truth is that SHIELD likely has all the necessary tools, equipment and people to educate Artemis the quickest and most thoroughly, but she had no idea if that was something they would even do.

"I need to make some phone calls, see who among the allies I know of that might be able to lend a hand," she explains. "In the mean time, I can set you up in my room with a laptop and you can start reading some files on law, American culture, social standards, that sort of thing. It might take me a couple of days, but you're welcome to stay here in the mean time. I don't think there's just a place I can go, 'Sure blah can do that!' so we'll see what I can find, but by no means are you imposing on me. If I can't find anyone or anywhere, then I'm more than willing to assist."

Artemis has posed:
"Thank you. I appreciate your assistance, which is certainly not something you are required to do on top of your other duties. I will do my best to learn quickly so that I do not cause you more problems than I already have. If you would like to explain this laptop thing to me, I would be happy to begin right away. I do not require much rest, so I may as well get started as soon as possible.

Sara Pezzini has posed:
Sara has a quick moment of panic over the idea of explaining a laptop, but really she just needs to explain how to find information on the internet for Artemis to read... and that she can do. Standing up, she gestures for Artemis to follow and sets the woman up in her bedroom, at the desk, with the laptop. It takes her a little time to explain everything, but before she returns to the living room, Artemis can access the world wide web and all the glorious information out there. She also makes sure to explain that not /everything/ out there is real, so if there is something she has questions about, she can ask Sara any time.
