Alan Scott was a founding member of the Great Lakes Defenders during World War II.

He notably wielded the power of the ancient mystical intelligence known as the Starheart. A fragment of the meteor crashed to Earth and was fashioned into a lamp in the 1300s. In the late 19th century, an insane blacksmith rebuilt it into a classical train lantern. Alan Scott was a locomotive engineer working in the area and found the lantern after the crafter was killed in a train accident. The lantern gave him a ring of pure emerald, allowing him to channel immense mystical forces.

This was in 1938. His first use of these powers came when cultists of the Thule Society descended on his home of Chicago, seeking the very relic Scott now possessed. He fended off the agents of the Third Reich and captured their lieutenant.

Scott was introduced later to Thomas Wayne Sr., Dinah Drake Lance, and Jay Garrick. The four of them assembled as the Great Lakes Defenders to defeat Axis spies and saboteurs present in the United States. The four remained friends for many years after the GLD disbanded.

Alan Scott allegedly died in 1988, at the time well into his 80s but barely looking over 30. In fact a few friends gathered to bid him farewell and buried an empty coffin in the Chicago graveyard. Too many years of channeling the power of the Starheart had whittled away his corporeal form and was starting to affect his humanity as well. Fearing the worst, Alan elected to return his magic to the Starheart and finally seek peace on his own terms.
