Until recently, Alex thought he was just another graduate student, heading for a moderate rewarding academic career in geophysics and archeology. His recent discovery of his mutant power has changed all of that; now, instead of the soft and easy life he hoped for, he has been thrown into a world of mutants and their enemies, and above all, a power that is horrifically destructive he must learn to control.

Timeline

Timeline:
* 1996: Born to Air Force officer Christopher Summers and his wife Kate in Honolulu, Hawaii as the younger of two brothers.
* 2002: While flying with his family in their private plane, their aircraft is shot down by a Shi'ar scout craft. His parents push himself and his brother Scott out the door before it explodes. Both brothers survive but his older brother Scott is in a coma for a year from a head injury.
*: 2003: Alex is separated from his brother and adopted by the Blanding family who attempt to remake Alex in the image of their biological son Todd who died in a car accident. This is done through the machinations of Dr. Nathaniel Milbury, aka Mr. Sinister, who keeps tabs on the boy but believes his older brother will carry the stronger mutant gift.
*: 2010: Alex and his adopted sister Haley are kidnapped by the boy responsible for Todd Blanding's death. When the kidnapper attacks Alex, his powers manifest and he vaporized the other boy with a blast of plasma. Sinister wipes these memories from Alex and Haley and genetically locks his powers, but begins taking a more active interest in Alex as well as his brother. Alex harbors an unconscious fear of his power regardless.
* 2011-2018: Unaware of his mutant heritage, Alex lives a normal life, as captain of his swim team, and goes on to study geology in college, then dual majoring in archeology and geophysics.
* 2019: Unbeknownst to Alex as he prepares to graduate, his archeology professor, Dr. Ahmet Abdol, is also a mutant who also derives power from absorbing cosmic radiation. During schizophrenic episode to where he believed himself to be a living Pharaoh, Abdol attacks Alex, believing he is deliberately stealing his power. The battle breaks the genetic lock placed on Alex's powers, revealing him as a mutant as his power erupts once more, drawing the attention of Professor Xavier and the X-Men.
* 2019-2020: Confronted with the reality of his mutant powers, Alex struggles to complete his masters degree and come to terms with the new life he's been pulled into, both in learning to control his destructive power and encountering his long-lost brother Scott once more.
* 2021: Since his powers re-manifested, the plight of mutantkind has been brought drastically into focus for Alex. He starts to struggle about whether Xavier's Dream can ever succeed.

Personality

Anger:
Alex has been frustrated and depressed much of his life, and forced to bury the anger that sense of unfairness created deep down. First, he lost his parents and brother; then he was given to parents who didn't really want him, just to replace their son; then on the cusp of what should have been a promising career, he discovered he has an incredible dangerous and powerful mutant ability he must now learn to control. It can push him into black moods, and even cause him to lash out when his temper finally breaks under one too many irritations.

Confidence:
Alex has confidence issues he has spent much of his life trying to overcome. In particular, he struggles with an inferiority complex, the idea that he lacks value in some way. Much of this is due to his life growing up, where he knew full well he was just a replacement for his parents' biological son and felt like he himself lacked value save as a stand in. This can make him push people away out of a subconscious fear when they get close that they'll somehow reject him. In particular, his subconscious fear of his own powers causes him to sometimes hesistate in using his powers, for fear they'll go wild when he fails to maintain control.

Laid Back:
Alex strives not to get too worked up about things, especially things he can't change, and given a choice will try not to think about his problems at all, preferring to procrastinate on facing them. This can make him seem shallow, but in truth it's a way he uses to keep his temper under control when frustrated or irritated, preferring to laugh it off with a dry humored joke than show it gets under his skin. This can go too far the other way though, where he represses his emotions rather than letting them out, especially his anger.

Loyal:
To those he comes to trust, Alex is a loyal and honest (if often blunt) friends to those in his close circle, who will do whatever he can to help them. However, he expects this loyalty to go both ways; if he feels he's being mistreated or worse, someone betrays him, he will lose any trust he had in that person. Part of this is a secret fear that he isn't "good enough" in some way, which makes him expect that people will discard him from friendships or relationships. But for those who win their way past those worries, he is a unyielding friend and protector.

Reluctant Hero:
While Alex has an extremely powerful mutant gift, he would prefer to live a soft and easy life over a heroic one, with the people he loves safe from harm. This can make him seem a bit selfish at times, or at least self-absorbed. Alas, given the recent Mutant Massacre in New York and the rise of anti-mutant feelings, fate seems determined to push him to where he cannot turn away from those in need. He knows, deep down, that he can't run from what he is, and that the perfect life he imagined is not going to happen the way he thought.

Righteous:
Alex strives to be a good man, though his temper doesn't always let him set the example he'd prefer. When confronted with evil, he responds with a righteous wrath to save those in danger, in particular innocents. This same tendency can get him into trouble, however, as when he believes his cause is righteous when it is not, as it can be difficult to change his mind once he's set on his path. Because of this, he can fall into an ends justify the means mentality.

Energy Absorption:
While Alex normally passively absorbs ambient cosmic energies, but he can also choose to deliberately absorb, store, and re-process other types of radiant energies with concentration and willpower. This makes him virtually immune to the effects of most forms of radiation and heat.

Flight:
Alex is capable of using his stored energy for flight by expelling plasma downward and from his hands and feet, allowing him to fly at the speeds of a civilian aircraft. This is easier when he is already at full energy, but gets progressively more difficult the less "fuel" he has available.

Plasma Generation:
Alex's body constantly absorbs ambient cosmic radiation (such as starlight, x-rays, or gamma radiation) and processes it into waves of energy that heat the air into extremely powerful bolts of plasma. These are expelled in the form of directed blasts (usually along his arms or from his chest) that manifest as concentric circles, or as an area discharge when uncontrolled. While it can appear that these blasts are imbued with concussive force, any shattering of material is due to the sudden jump in temperature from when the plasma strikes an object which causes even the toughest materials to disintegrate and/or melt. At full power, his blasts are capable of shattering tanks, destroying entire city blocks, or delivering extremely powerful blows to other superbeings. However, at its lowest power level, directing a plasma blast at a human will give them no worse than a headache. The more powerful the blast, the more deeply it draws on Alex's stored power reserves. There is a maximum amount of energy Alex can contain; exceeding this limit causes him to begin emitting plasma energies at very low levels, sufficient to raise the temperature in a room but not harmful. It takes Alex roughly 17 hours to fully restore his energy reserves from nothing from ambient energy, or more quickly if he's exposed to more focused energies. In addition, controling his power to emit in anything but an omni-directional blast is physically tiring for Alex for an extended period of time due to the effort needed to refine his power emission.

Summers Power Immunity:
Alex is immune to the powers of the other members of his family, such as his brother Scott. Likewise, they are immune to his power. In either case, side effects of the power itself still affect either, such as material being exploded or disintegrated nearby.

Skills

Academic:
Alex is intellectually gifted and a college graduate. He is well-educated in the geophysical sciences, with a Masters in Geophysics and a bachelor's degree in Archeology. He enjoys going on archeological digs as a hobby. He is an experienced researcher and writer when it comes to getting his ideas across. He also has a well-rounded education in a variety of subjects.

Athletic:
Alex possesses above average strength and endurance, and works out to maintain his musculature and flexibility. with intensive regular exercise. He could give the Rock a run for his money in an arm wrestling match, but maybe not in an actual wrestlign match.

Martial Arts:
Now that his eyes have been opened to the battle being fought for equality between mutants and humans, Alex has thrown himself head first into hand to hand combat training. He may not be Batman, but he could at least last a few rounds against him now. He's broadened his focus to a more mixed martial arts, but prefers the Korean styles. He's even begun learning Gungdo, although he hasn't nearly mastered the art of the reflex bow - it's more a hobby for now.

Singing:
While he might not win America's Got Talent, Alex kills it on Karaoke night.

Surfing:
Alex's favorite vacation past-time is finding the best surf he can.

Swimming:
Alex is an accomplished marathon swimmer who excelled in swim club in school and still swims for exercise and pleasure.

Resources

Costume:
Alex was gifted a costume that doubles as a containment suit that constantly measures his energy output, to help him learn to constain his powers. In addition to helping him control his powers, it is moderately good body armor, the equivalent of kevlar without the bulkiness, and can stop most low caliber small arms or melee weapons. It incorporates a jetpack that can channel his plasma energies to allow him to fly more easily and with less energy expended. The suit is very durable and relatively easy to repair.

Summers Family:
While not rich, Alex is comfortably well off thanks to a trust created for him by his airplane company CEO grandfather's will. In addition to his brother Scott, aka Cyclops of the X-Men, it turns out his father Christopher survived the explosion of their aircraft and became a space pirate and the leader of the Starjammers, Corsair. Either would likely intervene if he needed help, just as he would help them if they needed it. Family is family. Even if they annoy you sometimes.

X-Men:
While a reluctant member, Alex has worked with the X-Men and his brother in the past, though he is still unsure if he wants to completely embrace the lifestyle of the mutant secret adventurer team. Still, they've helped him when he needed it, and Scott is family, so he's well-disposed towards them. Not to mention they've been through discovering their powers and learning to live with them, much like he's trying to do now.

Weaknesses

Hothead:
While Alex projects the image of a laid back if slightly dour man, in truth the frustration and anger at the unfairness of his life is bubbling under the surface, ready to burst out as explosions of temper. This can make him act brashly or make him lash out at those around him when he loses his temper. He usually is aware that he doesn't have a good reason for losing his temper, that things that are annoying him and frustrating him are things that usually just aren't seriously enough to warrant his reactions. And he often regrets his bursts of anger after they happen, especially when they cause him to use his powers rashly. But it still happens regardless.

Insecure:
Alex's life has given him a sense of inadequacy, that he personally is somehow lacking. The parents who raised him made it clear by their behavior that he was just a replacement for their lost son; and having a massively destructive and dangerous power dropped on him unexpectedly isn't doing wonders for his confidence. The fact that his brother Scott is a respected leader who has had years of training in his powers only reinforces this. He desperately wants to prove himself worthy, but self-sabotages by believing he can't possibly reach those levels and not trying seriously as a result. He struggles to overcome this and push through, and to be fair when people really need him, he comes through. It's when it's not earthshattering or an emergency that he can and does fall short from time to time.

Overload:
Alex is continually absorbing energy, if he doesn't release some of what he's stored, he has the potential to go nuclear both emotionally and physically. Typically he tries to do this at least once a day, if he pushes 48 hours he's nearly impossible to deal with from an Anger Badger standpoint and at 36 hours, his tenuous control of his powers fails.

Uncontrolled Power:
Alex is still new to controlling his energy absorption and plasma conversion ability, which can make him a danger to those around him, especially when he's not wearing his customized containment costume. While he's not likely to randomly explode like a bomb, his plasma blasts can end up being a bit more energetic than he was intending.
