Amanda Sefton is a recent transplant from Europe who has turned her experience in the airline industry into a successful boutique travel and events company. She's also a witch with a penchant for healing, teleportation, and defensive spells -- though that doesn't mean she can't dish it out, too, should occasion demand. Regardless, she's usually friendly and upbeat, more than willing to help a friend... or even a stranger in need.

Timeline

Timeline:
* 1993 - 2nd born child (only daughter) of Margali Szardos, a powerful Romani sorceress living in Bavaria. Named Jimaine Szardos. One older brother: Stefan.
* 1995 - Margali adopts a strange, fuzzy, blue infant with a demonic countenance, naming him Kurt and adding him to the small family.
* 1997 - Margali joins a circus travelling across Europe, bringing her children with her.
* 1999 - Jimaine begins learning to be a circus acrobat and performer. She also begins learning the (non-spellcasting, age-appropriate) fundamentals of magic at her mother's knee.
* 2005 - Jimaine performs in her first circus show. She also casts her first spell -- a healing cantrip.
* 2008 - Kurt joins her in the circus performances. Jimaine (now 15) begins experimenting with her magic away from her mother's supervision.
* 2010 - Stefan leaves the circus.
* 2011 - Jimaine takes an intermittent leave of absence from the circus to attend college in London. Secretly, the move to Britain is partly an attempt to escape the consequences of some magic gone awry on the Continent (and a somewhat tenacious and dangerous magical enemy made in the process). To that end, she changes her appearance from a dark-haired, dark-eyed "gypsy" witch to a blond-haired, blue-eyed English woman, and changes her name to Amanda Sefton. She does, however, risk returning home to her family and the circus in between semesters -- i.e. at the height of performance season.
* 2012 - She solves her "magic gone awry" issue and placates (or otherwise pacifies) her erstwhile magical enemy, but decides to keep the Amanda Sefton persona when away from the circus. At the very least, she needs it to finish out her degree. Meanwhile, the circus changes management, precipitating Kurt's departure.
* 2013 - After a falling out with the new circus management, Amanda takes up permanent residence in England and works on both finishing her degree and increasing her mystical knowledge.
* 2014 - Amanda completes her degree and graduates with honours. She adopts the Amanda Sefton persona as "permanent", rather than go through the hassle of magicking her credentials back onto her original identity. She picks up odd jobs for the next several months, traveling the British and Irish countryside (chasing magical lore).
* 2015 - On a lark, Amanda applies for a British Airways flight attendant position. Surprisingly, the airline interviews and hires her, subsequently both providing and funding her certification as an accredited flight attendant.
* 2018 - Kurt turns up in Great Britain. Amanda joins him as a part of Excalibur, leveling up substantially as a sorceress and superhero in the process.
* 2020 - Amanda relocates to NYC when she senses a serious disruption in global mystical forces that seems to be centered on the US east coast. With the help of local contacts both inside and out of the airline industry, she resigns from Britsih Airways and launches a boutique travel and events company that caters to a prestigious and discrete high-end clientele.

Personality

Anyfriend:
Amanda holds familial bonds, as well as the bonds of friendship, sacrosanct. She will (quite literally) go to Hell and back for her friends and family. For her, a promise made must be a promise kept. So, when she promises a friend she'll be there, somehow, some way, (barring acts of gods or demons) she'll be there... even if she has to move Heaven and Earth to do it.

Determined:
Thanks to the focus and discipline becoming a sorceress has demanded of her, Amanda has developed tremendous inner strength and an iron will that often manifests as staunch determination or, occasionally, bullheaded stubborness. She's not inflexible, mind... but once she sets her mind to something she usually sees it through. What she doesn't do, however, is make a big show of it -- unless her back's against a wall or she's pushed to defend her principles.

Extroverted Introvert:
Like many performers, Amanda displays a great deal of outgoing confidence and dynamic energy. However, she still needs time alone, away from people or with only a couple of close friends, to meditate and recharge her emotional batteries. Thus, while she is often friendly and gregarious, it's not at all out of character for her to slip into a more laidback, lowkey frame of mind.

Kind & Compassionate:
Amanda has the heart of a healer and a helper. She doesn't like to see others suffer. So, if there's something she can do to help them along the way, she almost certainly will. What she won't do, however, is help them to the point where she may end up harming them, instead, by not allowing them to grow and develop strength of their own. Some lessons have to be learned the hard way.

Performer:
In some ways, Amanda lives for the spotlight, though not in an attention whore sort of way. But she loves the rush of performance, the thrill of astounding the crowd, and the satisfaction of a job well done.

Principled:
Amanda has a strong moral compass, if an occasionally unconventional way of looking at it. She believes in defending the weak, helping those that can't easily help themselves, and keeping the forces of chaos and destruction in check. However, thanks to the influence of The Winding Way, she also believes there are few absolutes and that balance is found in the natural ebb and flow of Light and Dark, Order and Chaos, Creation and Destruction. Things traditionally perceived of as Good can become evil when taken to extremes. Similarly, things traditionally perceived of as Evil can actually be good, when they clear the way for new growth or inspire positive change. She doesn't see the world as black and white, but rather as infinite shades of grey, constantly shifting back and forth along the way.

Risk Taker:
Amanda is not afraid to take risks. She grew up soaring dozens of feet above the ground, swinging on the trapeze and peforming stunning feats of acrobatics -- often without a net. She's not an adrenaline junky, however, and won't take stupid risks. Rather, she plans meticulously, practices until she's sure she can hit the mark every time, and executes with precision. This mentality spills over into most areas of her life, including her business and personal life. She is not without spontineity, however. The more confident she is about the fundamentals and the people she's partnered with, the more likely she is to improvise along the way.

Powers

Healing Touch:
Though technically a part of her magical legacy, Amanda's healing magic is far more innate and less subject to the fluctuations of The Winding Way than her other mystical abilities. Often, when she cannot cast or control any other mystical force, she can still heal. She cannot bring back the dead -- that's necromancy, not healing -- but she can heal all but the most severe wounds even when her other powers are at their low ebb.
However, the healing comes at a cost both to her and to the people and environment around her. Thus, she is reluctant to use it needlessly, when other, less costly methods will do. Firstly, she must lay hands on (or within at least 6 inches of) whomever she seeks to heal. (Laying hands on is the most reliable method; every inch of distance increases the likelihood of poorer results. Beyond 6 inches there's no effect whatsoever.) She then draws on her personal life energy and the life energy of everyone and everything around her to complete the healing by channeling those energies into the patient -- potentially causing a different sort of harm in the process.
The transfer of life energy is draining on both her and on those she draws from, typically manifesting as a lingering fatigue (proportional to the amount of energy transferred) in people and animals the size of a German Shepherd or greater, but may ultimately result in a shortened life expectancy as well (though there's no reliable way to know for sure; life energy can be replenished over time, after all). Smaller animals and plants or insects, etc., in the environment can suffer far more pronounced effects, up to and including withering and death. (Consequently, Amanda is adamant about keeping children away whenever she heals anything worse than a simple fracture -- though that's the sort of injury she'd likely refer to a less dangerous healing method if circumstances don't demand otherwise.)
This is somewhat mitigated by her ability to focus and control how much energy she draws from which source and by the fact it is often easier to draw from sympathetic bodies than disinterested, unsympathetic, or openly hostile ones. To that end, she will typically sacrifice her own energy before that of others, meaning the draining effects are usually worse for her than anyone else -- mitigated by the fact she magically replenishes faster than them with an appropriate amount of rest and meditation.
Nevertheless, there are only so many times she can heal the same person. How often that may be depends on the severity and frequency of the injuries she heals on that person (i.e. the greater the injury or more frequently she heals someone, the sooner she'll eventually be unable to help them), her personal affinity for the person being healed (i.e. how close they are as freinds or how similar they are in nature), and the vagaries of Fate (i.e. story needs). A shift in any or all of these factors can decrease or increase her ability to heal any given person over time.
Further, once she has attempted to heal an injury, if it didn't work or only partially worked, no further attempts will succeed -- though more traditional spellcraft methods (i.e. previously prepared healing potions, etc.) may still help. Moreover, she may be able to heal new or different injuries on that person in the future (or she may not, if she's reached that unpredictable limit).
However, she cannot heal herself in this way; she is limited to more traditional methods to heal her own injuries (i.e. potions, poltices, tinctures, magical herbal remedies, etc... or good, old-fashioned, natural, non-magical healing treatments). And any magical means of healing that doesn't rely on her healing touch is subject to whatever vagaries and fluctuations The Winding Way may introduce both in terms of strength/effect and shelf life (both of which are fixed at the time of creation, not the time of use).

Mistress of Magic:
Amanda has inherited her family's magical abilities and can control a wide range of mystical energies, allowing her a remarkably flexible arsenal of powers, spells, and eldritch skills. Among her most commonly manifested abilities are illusions, shapeshifting, teleportation, hypnotism, astral projection, and bolts pure mystical energy or shields made of the same stuff. However, she is also adept at various scryings, summonings, rituals, circle magicks, and more complex (read: less instantaneous/non-combat appropriate) spellcasting and magecrafting. Further, she has access to a wide range of mystical lore gleaned over a lifetime of study and focused research -- though it should be noted her loremastery is more equivalent to a masters degree than a doctorate; she's still got a lot to learn.
Regardless, her magical power level waxes and wanes (sometimes unpredictably) according to the shifting of The Winding Way, the mystical discipline that gives her abilities shape and form. It is also greatly affected by her environment -- she is much better at casting in urban environments or on mystical planes than she is in rural environments or natural landscapes. She is also better at controlling urban-related elements than natural ones (e.g. animating a golem using steel and concrete is much easier for her than animating a golem out of trees and forest plants). Spells cast outside of urban environments have a much higher chance of going awry (sometimes with devastating results).

Skills

Acrobat:
Amanda trained as an acrobat and tumbler from an early age and has had cause throughout her adulthood to maintain those skills and the flexibility and athleticism that comes with them. This gives her remarkable balance, dexterity, and reflexes, allowing her to dodge many attacks that don't exceed peak human reflexes or speeds.

Acting & Performance:
Amanda is a strong actress and charismatic performer, having grown up in and around the center ring and spent much of her adult life pretending to be someone else. She knows how to act, when to act, and how to read an audience so she can adjust her performance accordingly. She also understands just how much honesty goes into the best performances and isn't afraid of being honest in that way. Further, she knows when she's having a performance directed at her, and can usually pick the truth out of the spectacle.

Education & Training:
Amanda grew up on the stage, learning to give audiences what they want; survived a 4-year bachelor program at a decent British university, gaining skills in business, communications, PR, and marketting; and worked as a flight attendant for several years, training for emergencies as much as hospitality and air safety. She has a wide variety of practical skills that lend themselves very well to the new entrepreneurial journey she's currently navigating. She might not be a household name, yet, but she's off to a solid start.

Multi-Lingual:
Amanda speaks Romani, German, and English fluently, often able to adapt her accent and dialect to her audience. She speaks conversational French and is passable in Italian and Spanish. She also has command of a small handful of magical languages ranging from Latin and Ancient Greek to Sumerian and Ancient Hebrew. She can recognize and generally understand the gist of certain dialects of speech from specific Outer Planes -- mostly those Margali introduced her to -- but isn't remotely fluent in any of them.

Research & Investigation:
As a practitioner of the mystic arts, Amanda has had to learn both how to research exceedingly esoteric and obscure subject matter, and to investigate highly unusual happenings and occurances. She has a working understanding of fields as different and diverse as archeology and astrology, or history and mythology. She may not be the World's Greatest Detective, but she can handle herself competently in the stacks of old libraries or on the internet as well as in the back streets of a foreign city or at the scene of a magical mystery.

Street Savvy:
Amanda grew up in a circus, traveling throughout Europe -- and it wasn't a Cirque du Soliel show. It wasn't nearly that classy or slick. She's seen the mean side of most major cities across Western and Central Europe and a lot of towns in between. Her Romani heritage and nomadic existance also means she understands the realities of being part of a marginalized people, suffering the prejudice and powerlessness that can bring. However, it also means she's learned the fine art of grifting and misdirection, skills she's honed over time (and that are made a jolly sight easier by the rare and judicious application of magic). This means it's hard to pull the wool over her eyes. It also means she can haggle and bargain with the best of them. Because of her nature, she is disinclined to swindle innocents or intentionally harm others in this way, but she's very good at spotting trouble while it's still mostly avoidable... and spotting escape routes when it's not.

Resources

Business:
Amanda is a new entrepreneur with a small business that, right now, is doing well enough to keep her afloat. That comes with some benefits (especially in terms of tax breaks and write-offs -- not to mention contacts and references), but requires careful management to sustain and grow. She's not yet at the point where she'd consider hiring any other employees, though she will sub-contract to other independent contractors when appropriate. That said, a lot of her savings are tied up in the business, meaning she's still on a reasonably tight budget, personally.

Contacts:
Thanks to her eclectic background and adaptable personality, Amanda has contacts throughout both the mundane and magical worlds that can be called upon to provide information and, far more occasionally, outright support when she needs it. Her strongest and most extensive networks are, unsurprisingly, in Europe, but enough of them overlap with America to mean that she can often source rare (but not impossibly obscure) pieces of information or get her hands on otherwise hard-to-get materials. Her contacts range from knowledgable academics in the halls of higher learning to international business people criss-crossing the globe on a weekly basis. She also knows people in much lower and less savory places, given that a lot of magic shops don't exactly operate out in the open and obtaining even some of the more common spell components out there can require bending certain import regs.

Magical Accouterments:
When presenting herself as Daytripper (i.e. in costume) Amanda is specifically prepared for action. Her costume is bespelled to repel or at least resist many harmful magical effects as well as various elemental attacks (fire, cold, and electricity being chief among them). She may also carry specific focal objects or magical artifacts with her (crystals, wands, tools, healing potions, etc.), if she expects in advance that she will need to perform magic that requires such things. Such objects, however, are not part of her standard load-out and are limited in scope and utility. She is generally quite conservative in her equipment, partly due to a reluctance to rely too heavily on magic as a solution to every problem. (When all you use is a hammer, it's easy for everything to look like a nail.)

Spellcraftery:
As an experienced sorceress, Amanda keeps a good quantity of assorted and useful spell components and magical items on hand for practicing her craft. She does not generally carry them physically with her all (or even most of) the time, but leaves them in storage unless she knows she needs them. Nevertheless, they're certainly available to her when she needs them for conducting rituals or preparing magic in advance.

Weaknesses

Bindings:
Much of Amanda's magic is channeled through her hands. Therefore, one of the fastest ways to neutralize her is to bind her hands. (Ideally, you want to isolate and contain her hands, not just cuff her wrists. A pointed finger or lightly flexed hand can be enough leeway for her, especially if the spell isn't overly strong.) While there are powers she can do even while her hands are bound -- e.g. astral projection or hypnosis -- her most powerful magics will be useless without her hands to help direct and channel her will and intent (e.g. force bolts, teleportation, illusions, or healing). It's worth noting that Amanda is further hampered when gagged so that she cannot speak, but most of her instantaneous magic (i.e. the stuff she'd use in a fight, as opposed to prepared magic like a ritual or potion-making) doesn't require any sort of verbal component.

Conservation of Magic:
Amanda, for all her confidence and skill, is very careful about how and when she uses magic. She is disinclined to use it casually, which means she will sometimes (more often than she cares to admit!) do things "the hard way", rather than snap her fingers or wiggle her nose (metaphorically speaking). Partly, this is because she has seen the effects magic has had on her mother, whose ambition can make her reckless and decietful, and wishes to avoid a similar fate. Partly, this is because she's already suffered the consequences of poor impulse control where magic is concerned and has no desire to do so again. Too, she's very concretely aware of the hidden costs of magic -- stealing energy from one life to give to another -- thanks to the way her healing talents work. As far as she's concerned, that's karma at work... and pissing-off karma is a very, very bad idea.

Foreigner:
Amanda is technically a German citizen, though her passport is British thanks to the reinvention of herself in her early 20's. She has done the necessary paperwork to be allowed to work in the country, taking advantage of several of her contacts to do so, but is still in the process of getting any sort of permanent residency. Consequently, she does run the risk, however small, of running afoul of USCIS and Homeland Security -- especially if they discover and object to her superheroic or mystical activities.

Sensitive Attunement:
Amanda's magic is strongest, even subject to the vagaries of The Winding Way, in those environments to which she is best attuned. Generally, this means she's weaker when she's outside of a well-urbanized region. More specifically, however, it means she's weaker when she's outside the city to which she's most recently attuned herself -- a process that requires several hours of meditation, ideally spanning two or three days wherein she communes with the Soul of the City. The less familiar she is with a city, the longer it will take for her to properly attune (or re-attune) herself to it. She's very familiar with cities like New York and London, and thus can attune quickly to them (usually in about a day -- less when The Winding Way is strong), but less familiar with most other US cities and cities outside of Western and Central Europe (generally requiring 3 days of meditation). When not properly attuned to a city, her magic still works, but is a little more unpredictable, which can occasionally result in unexpected effects or unfortunate misfires.

Unpredictable Windings:
The discipline that allows Amanda to focus her magical energy is The Winding Way. Unfortunately, just as its name implies, the forces that govern The Winding Way and its practitioners are inconsistent, waxing and waning in strength unpredictably. Thus, the strength of Amanda's powers can fail at the most inopportune times, though only rarely is it so sudden as to catch her entirely off-guard.

Vulnerable Concentration:
Certain abilities and spells Amanda uses require an immense amount of concentration that can leave her vulnerable to external threats. For example, when she astral projects, her spirit leaves her physical body, leaving it vulnerable both to possession and to physical harm while unconscious. Consequently, she usually must prepare a protective circle about herself before she dares venture out into the Astral Plane. Similarly, illusions, particularly if they're complex, often require ongoing concentration that can cause her to ignore or completely miss immanent threats. Thus, any magic that requires significant effort to cast or maintain can severely compromise her situational awareness, which means she must always balance risk and reward when deciding on an action. The greater the required focus, the less multitasking (or multicasting) she can do.
