A half-blood Black/Blue submariner brought up in the surface world, Aspen is a bubbly, vivacious marine biologist with a set of water and energy powers she is only beginning to explore, all while being forced to navigate the treacherous world of undersea politics. And holding down her beloved job at Metropolis University's Oceanographic Institute.
Timeline
Timeline:
* 1993: Born to Rahger of the Black (father) and Eilah of the Blue (mother, now deceased)
*
2004: Together with her brother Finn, stumbled over the assassination of her mother and (to her not
yet known) stepfather by a group of dissident led by Killian.
* 2004: Her brother Finn and Aspen
escape in a stolen ship that explodes, apparently killing Finn in the process.
* 2004: Aspen
found on the missing passenger ship Paradise which showed up at its destination 10 years later ...
with none of the people aboard knowing that it had been missing.
* 2004: Aspen adopted by US Navy
officer, Captain Matthews, a passenger on that ill-fated ship.
* 2008: Aspen, at the age of 15,
wins Olympic Gold in swimming, breaking the world record by 30 seconds in her competition.
*
2008: Gold medal stripped after the mandatory blood test mistakenly indicates she'd performed
Erythrocythemia (blood doping), misinterpreting what turns out to have been her natural
metabolism.
* 2008: Banned in perpetuity from Olympic events and banned for eight years from
competitive swimming for US organizations because of her "disgracing the nation".
* 2010:
Attended California State University at Long Beach to study Marine Biology and to be close to her
beloved seas.
* 2014: Graduated Magna Cum Laude. Continued in a postgraduate program at
University of California San Diego.
* 2018: Earned her Ph.D. in Marine Biology.
* 2018:
Invited to join the Deep Marine Discovery, a joint Japan/US program studying an unknown undersea
vehicle, meeting Cannon Hawke, Chance Calloway, and Killian.
* 2018: Calloway's firing of a
torpedo at a vehicle similar to the one under study causes a chain of events that results in the
DSD's destruction, Killian's escape, and Aspen's discovery of her powers. Subsequently questioned by
an AWOL Calloway, Aspen admits she has no idea what her powers are or why she has them.
* 2019:
Kidnapped by government agents and returned to the DMD, she is introduced to her heritage as a
member of the Blue by Killian and begins training under his tutelage.
* 2020: Even by the
standards of the Blue, Aspen proves to have powers beyond the norm. Killian seduces her into his
movement for his Blue Sun project.
* 2020: In starting up one of three stations needed for Blue
Sun, Aspen kills her first person: a Japanese soldier whose blood she causes to exit his body in a
single, gory jump.
* 2021: A new friend, Kyla, proves to work for Hawke, who is trying to prevent
Aspen's use for Blue Sun. The pair convince her to escape Killian's influence.
* 2021: Aspen
starts work at Metropolis University's Oceanographic Institute as a part-time lecturer and worker in
the institute's aquarium.

Personality
Aquatic:
Aspen is deeply in love with anything related to water. She deeply loves boating, water skiing,
surfing, swimming, diving (especially now that she doesn't need protective equipment), not to
mention the study of underwater ecosystems, undersea life, and generally everything to do with
water.
Bubbly:
Despite the horrors of her past, both the parts she doesn't remember and the one horror she
herself perpetrated, Aspen is generally a bouncy, bubbly, positive person who tends to light up any
social situation she's in.
Intelligent:
She may look like a beach bimbo. She may even act like one when in social situations (c.f.
Bubbly). She isn't. Aspen is both smart and extremely well-educated in the sciences (with an obvious
focus on marine life).
Loyal:
Aspen will not abandon loved ones, friends, or perceived allies, often taking risky (and even
potentially life-ending) actions to try and save them.
Resolute:
Aspen has a very strong moral compass (of which her loyalty is merely an expression). She will
not be taken from a path she considers virtuous, not without very persuasive evidence of its
perfidy. (This has equal chance of being a meritorious trait as it does of being a deep flaw as her
work on Killian's Blue Sun showed.)

Powers
Energy Control:
Although she has used this in anger only once, to charge up the first station for Killian's Blue
Sun, Aspen does have the ability to control the flow of some form of energy that can be used to
power Blue technology, heat, or, through its removal, chill. She is not experienced with this power
and is not aware of what limits it may have nor what applications it may have because she cut her
training with Killian short after finding out about his plan to destroy the surface world with Blue
Sun.
Underwater Breathing:
Aspen, because of her Black/Blue physiology, can breathe underwater as well as speak in it as if
it were air.
Water Control:
There are several aspects to Aspen's water control, each addressed below.
Water Body
-
Aspen can convert parts of her body up to and including the whole into water. The
water form can retain coherence, can be split up, and then reassemble, e.g. being used to enter a
drain and reform in a tank the drain empties into.
Liquid Manipulation
-------------------
In the small, Aspen can manipulate any water-based liquid, including the water of her own
body (whether in water body form or not), able to purify it, move it, compress it into a form of
ice, and other such actions. Note that this includes blood, not just hers but also the blood of
others (something she has used to kill by causing the blood of a soldier to exit his body
explosively).
In the large, while currently very limited, Aspen will some day, as she learns
more of her heritage and unlocks the secrets in her own mind, be able to cause tsunamis, cause
torrential rain to suddenly fall, stop enormous waves, and otherwise be, in effect, a goddess of
water. Currently, however, this power is only hinted at in minor abilities like being able to calm
rough seas in a small area, or generate waves (for surfing, naturally!), or shield people in a small
radius from rainfall not merely by redirection but by preventing actual rainfall.
Water
Attacks
-------------
Aside from the usual attacks that someone able to manipulate water
(down to the level of blood) can make, there are two extra attacks that Aspen can perform that
require more detailing.
The first of these is the high speed geyser. At need Aspen can cause
up to three geysers to spring up from any nearby water source of sufficient size to batter,
envelope, and otherwise harm a target. The force of these is considerable, and when creatively
combined with water compression (making needles of an ice form) or with her energy manipulation
power can be utterly devastating, slashing targets into ribbons or parboiling them.
The
second of these is her "living grenade" attack in which she takes her water form and then explodes
it outward with the force of a sizable bomb. Because it is her actual body, complete with the
control this implies, she can do this without harming friends and allies, even when mixed together
in a group. This attack takes a lot out of her, however, and she will be out of commission a while
as she tries to reassemble.
Skills
Diving:
In human form Aspen has five times the lung capacity of even an Olympic-grade swimmer. In water
form she can dive forever and feel no ill effects.
Hand-To-Hand:
She's taken classes and has a natural physique to make up for some of her lack of knowledge. She
can hold her own against even multiple low-grade fighters without difficulty but serious fighters
will casually swat her aside.
Marine Biology:
Aspen has a Ph.D. in the discipline combined with a lot of practical knowledge in the
field.
Scuba Diving:
She's taken a few classes but recent developments have rendered them pointless. At best she
knows, perhaps, enough to save someone else's life underwater with scuba equipment.
Snow-Boarding:
Likely borrowing some skills from surfing, she is creditable as a snow-boarder as well, though
not a natural.
Surfing:
She's practically lived on surfboards since she could walk. They are second nature to
her.
Swimming:
Aspen is a natural swimmer able to outswim any human.
Resources
Cannon Hawke:
Unbeknownst to her, Hawke is her defender from her childhood onward, dedicated to her
protection. He has intervened more than once in her life to save her and direct her and will likely
do so again.
Oceanographic Institute:
As a lecturer at Metropolis University's Oceanographic Institute, along with her work at the
institute's aquarium, Aspen has a steady income, access to expertise in the form of colleagues and
students, and limited access to equipment related to her work.
Weaknesses
Chance Callaway:
The pilot whose actions triggered her awakening as a Black/Blue hybrid is ... not quite a
romantic interest. Yet. She does have feeling for him, however, which if left to develop will likely
become romantic in nature. As such he is an achilles heel that could be used against her.
Dehydration:
She is a submariner. She needs water at a level that no human could understand. Removal from a
supply of water (like, say, in the middle of a desert without water rations) will have a
debilitating effect on her FAR more rapidly than it would have on a human. Similarly her powers rely
on the presence of water. Such environments will cripple her powers.
