Athena is a daughter of Zeus. Though the story is she sprang fully formed from Zeus' forehead, it's considered most likely that she's the daughter of Metis via unconventional means (gods are not subject to the norms of physical reproduction). She is the goddess of civilized warfare and wisdom, and is one of the most powerful of the Olympians.

In contrast to her half-brother Ares, the god of unrestrained warfare, Athena oversees warfare in its more positive aspects - in defense of the city, of home, of life. While Ares specializes in brutal power, Athena is the mistress of tactics and strategy - as befits a goddess of both wisdom and war. Warriors who follow her way would not see war as glorious so much as necessary, and her champions will excel at warfare but view it as a last resort.

Timeline:

c. 20k BC: Athena born to Zeus, and possibly to Metis.
c. 15k BC: Athena fights as part of the Olympian forces during Ragnarok.
c. 10k BC: Athena fights against Kronos in the Titanomachy. She's one of Zeus' most capable allies aiding him to take over the primarchy of Olympus.
c. 2k BC: Athena, with the help of Hestia, Aphrodite, Artemis, and Demeter (and to a lesser extent Hephaestus and Hermes), create the Amazons as a balancing force for Ares' growing power amongst the warlike kingdoms of the Mediterranean world.
c. 1350 BC: Ares tricks Hercules and Perseus into betraying and capturing the Amazons. Athena frees them with the condition that they do not seek to take revenge. Hippolyta intends to honor Athena's wishes, but her sisters and co-rulers disagree. In the resulting war the Amazons lay waste to the Mycenaean kingdoms. Athena banishes them to the Island of the Well of Souls, which they name Themyscira after the city they used to live in. There they are charged with the sacred duty of the defence of the Bronze Gate to Tartarus, which the Amazons call Doom's Doorway, to remind them what they were created for.
461-429 BC: The age of Pericles, the height of Athenian power and likewise the height of Athena's power.
c. 400 BC: Athena splits part of herself off to form Minerva, an avatar to represent the Greek colonies in Italy, and eventually the Roman empire.
c. 100 AD: Along with the other Olympians, Athena steps back from involvement in the mortal realms, relying more on indirect than direct worship from now on.

Personality

Athena Ergane:
Athena is a patron of craftspeople. Little makes her happier than to see the pursuit of intellect and beauty, of arts and science. In her view it is the capacity of mortals to invent and create that makes them worthwhile.

Athena Glaukopis:
Bright-eyed Athena is a personification of wisdom, and this will be foremost in any interactions with her. There is little that escapes her understanding and knowledge, and when she chooses to share that wisdom it will inevitably be profound.

Athena Pallas:
In her aspect as the Eternal Virgin, Athena is symbolic of purity. It should be understood that while this is most simply interpreted as chastity, it is much more to do with a purity of spirit. Athena is kind and loving to those who she deems good souls. She is a protector of pure-heartedness, but has little time for anything she perceives as vanity or corruption -- and she will know.

Athena Promachos:
Athena is the warrior and protector of the Olympians. Normally she will come across as gentle and calm, a being of wisdom -- but when roused, there are few beings in the universe as protectively fierce as Athena.

Athene He Theos:
Above all it should be remembered that Athena is a goddess. She is simply not like mortals. Her concerns are not mortal concerns, her limits are not mortal limits. When she appears to mortals, she will do so in a roughly mortal guise so as to be more understandable to them. However she is a being of far greater abstraction and subtlety than mortals, and her concerns and drives are simply beyond the understanding of most.

Powers

Divine:
First and foremost, it should be understood that Athena is an actual goddess, and one of the most powerful of the Olympians, amongst the most pure of the New Gods in terms of sustaining their link to the demiurge. She derives from, and is a fundamental part of the powers of creation themselves. She is a being of universal potency and almost unimaginable power.

Godly Aura:
As a god, Athena's mere presence is a potent force. You can't really meet her without knowing you're in the presence of someone of awesome power, and simply being near her will tend to inspire mortals towards her fields of divinity.

Magic:
Gods are essentially beings of magic of the purest form, and as a part of the fundamental nature of reality, her closeness to the underlying nature of the universe grants her an understanding of and capability with magic to an extraordinary degree. While magic is not one of her specialities as a god, she is nevertheless capable of reality-altering magics, and able to achieve magical effects of immense potency without apparent effort. All but the most powerful mortals sorcerers could find their most potent spells nullified with a wave of her hand, and even the most powerful would have to put considerable work into a spell that could have any effect on her.

Olympian Form:
The Gods are not physical beings in the normal sense of the word. Their physical forms are manifestations of their will. While she favors the form of a Greek warrior maiden, she can as with all true Olympians take any form she chooses. In material form her body is somewhat subject to the laws of physics, but this is largely a matter of the form she has chosen. An Olympian is entirely indestructible by any conventional physical assault, and can only be genuinely harmed by magical means of the most cosmically potent order.

Strength:
Athena granted a tiny fraction of her physical prowess to Wonder Woman, and that is enough to put her on par with Kryptonians. Think about it.

Tactics and Warfare:
Athena's grasp of the tactics of war should be understood not simply as a skill but as a power, because it's a fundamental part of what she is. There is in effect no limit to her ability to strategize, and she is said to be unbeatable in a fair fight by any being, capable of outwitting even Ares.

Skill:
Athena IS skill. She can pretty much do whatever she decides she can do.

Resources

Aegis and the Cloak:
Athena's cloak and the shield Aegis are objects of immense magical power that protect the wearer from all harm. There seems to be little limit to the power of these items; she has been known to tear strips from her cloak to give her champions protection in battle, and part of the metal of Aegis has been given to the Amazons to blend into the alloy they use to make the unbreakable bracers given to every single Amazon.

Olympus:
The greatest resource of any Olympian is Olympus itself. She is innately tied to the Olympian realm, and her will is secondary only to the will of the primarch Zeus when it comes to Olympus. Her power is wrapped in Olympus itself and for any not of Olympus to challenge her when in Olympus would be virtually impossible.

The Amazons:
Although the Amazons are equally beholden to Hestia, Demeter, Aphrodite and Artemis it was under Athena's leadership that they were created, and it is after Athena that they most closely model themselves. There is little the Amazons would not do for Athena if asked.

The Spear of Athena:
The reason she rarely uses the Thunderbolts is her signature weapon, her spear. This magical weapon will hit whoever it is thrown at, wherever they are in the universe, unless countered by a defense of equal divine potency.

Theophontos:
The God-Killer sword is Hephaestus' most powerful creation, a sword capable of (and specifically designed for) killing divine beings with a single blow. She does not normally carry this sword -- it is normally kept in the most secure armory in Themyscira, where it is intended as a balancing force, granting the Amazons the possibility of challenging the gods themselves should something go disastrously wrong with the world. She could claim it back whenever she wants though.

Thunderbolts:
Other than Zeus, Athena is the only other being capable of wielding the Thunderbolt weapon created by the Cyclopes to aid Zeus during the Titanomachy. This is a weapon powerful enough to harm gods.

Weaknesses

Divinity:
While being a god means Athena is a being of immense power, it also makes her subject to complicated rules. She simply cannot go against her nature without significantly compromising what she is. Being too close to mortals, taking too direct a role in mortal affairs etc. has the effect of slowly eroding a god's divine nature. Failing to act in terms of her 'harmony' erodes it even faster. In short there are a lot of things that Athena will simply not do.

Worship:
Divine beings derive their power from the universe itself, but the primary way this power is focused into divine beings is worship. This doesn't have to be the direct worship of mortals with temples and sacrifices and so on, though that clearly helps. More indirectly mortals empower any gods of a given type through their actions -warfare, crafts and learning all empower Athena, along with any other gods that share those spheres of power. However her overall power as a god is subject to the degree of worship, direct and indirect. With fewer people worshipping her, she becomes less powerful. She has less power on a planet of uncreative pacifists than a planet of wise warriors, for example.
