The white door opened up and Jovian stepped through. The warm desert air he breathed told him he was probably back in Nazca, Peru, and saw a lighted panel with darkness and floodlights showing three hooded figures. Jovian, who should have been impressed, managed to avoid giggling at the idea that this looked like a spooky set for the 64000 dollar question and some 13 year olds stole bathrobes and put flashlights up to their faces. But these guys had just made a magical door appear out of nowhere and conjured him literally thousands of miles in the blink of an eye. That, and if he pissed them off they'd give a gabillion dollars to a lunatic.
Sigh.
"Hi guys, I imagine you heard I am looking for an explanation of some weirdness that is going on with my powers?"
"The blackouts?" The man in the middle said and looked at Jovian's medical file,"Yes, we know about them."
Of course they did. Jovian didnt say anything.
There was an awkward silence. Eventually, the hooded guy on the right said, "We have a chamber that answers questions like the ones you have; but its never pretty."
The guy on the left said, "Seriously. The part where they say most men run screaming when confronted by their true selves means something. You shouldnt do this lightly."
The one in the middle looked really annoyed and muttered under his breath, "GUYS? Really?" He cleared his throat, "Understand that if we do this for you per our agreement you must perform two tasks for us."
Jovian sighed, "Sure. Fine."
They remained silent. Another awkward silence and Jovian eventually walked through the red door. Instantly, the air changed back to the rusty dusty air of New York and Metropolis. As he looked around, it was quite empty and he found that the other doors opened to an unending whiteness. After a few moments, he sat down in one of the chairs and the lights darkened. There was a crappy series of trailers and then the screen said, "Coming Attractions"
"Bolo: The Movie" It was clearly a trailer and showed some of the most embarrassing moments of his life, most of them as a hero. Then the trailer guy's voice started narrating, "In a world full of heroes, not all of them have equal choices." Jovian arched a brow. What the hell did this mean, "There are so many devices" it showed a box, a glove, a cube, a loom, a boom, "But at the end it always comes to the same choices. Sometimes, people make good choices all the time," the screen showed some of the most powerful heroes in the world, people who made the news every day, "and sometimes bad ones." And it showed a similar brief parade of every nightmare that anyone who didnt wear a costume dealt with every day in the world trying to never meet with; but then the trailer got weird, "But sometimes there are grey areas; people who make good or bad, but sometimes with mostly bad choices, there are weirdos" it showed his doppleganger doing...well, frankly AWFUL things, other versions of him in worlds he didnt recognize and one that looked an awful lot like the warehouse he had visited with Lara Croft that came across as...wrong, "And sometimes people just keep making these unexpected choices until they end up where they are least expected...an unexpected hero" the music turned to a background of Kazoos as it showed him flying all over the city with a jet pack and then blood and spider webs covered the screen, "until there are nothing but bad choices left....."
Jovian stood and looked at the screen, "No. No that's not possible. No way. You're lying!" He looked around the theater and screamed until the scream turned silent and never quite ended.
