Dex is an intelligent young man and talented tinkerer, working out of his apartment in New York as a gizmo repairman. Outside of this, however, the unassuming, plain Dex has developed a special weapon: the Proto-Shot. Combining his love of archery and the wonders of hardlight technology, he's developed a bow that can fire construct arrows, though it's called the Proto-Shot for a reason and has a tendency to fail. He's quite proud and touchy about his pet project, though he's also very shy and tends to keep to himself unless engaged first. He wants nothing more than to be a hero and help the world, spoken of in the same breath as the greats, but he's still working on that, working on perfecting the tech he's developed to gain the respect of those he looks up to so much.

Timeline:
* 2000: Born to Martin and Vanessa Alruin in a small town in central Missouri.
* 2008: Dex finds himself thirsting for knowledge outside of what his school can offer, seeks out reading material from nearby high schools at his parents' request. He begins to experience backlash from his peers because he's not 'normal'.
* 2010: Dex builds a small projector from spare parts. He's able to display his name on the device before it falls apart. He begins to try and find parts to see what he can build.
* 2013: Dex, on his parents' urgings for him to get some form of exercise, takes up archery. He finds he truly enjoys the feel of drawing a bowstring, even if he struggles with it. The idea of a projected-light bow is sketched.
* 2015: Dex manages the first prototype of a hardlight projection device, firing a construct arrow from a small disc-shaped projecter before the device fries its circuitry. He keeps this a secret.
* 2017: Dex graduates from his hometown high school, tells his parents he's moving to New York City to seek out a better hub for his hunger for tech knowledge. His parents are supportive of this, and aid him with enough money to get him there and settled. He begins doing small repairs to maintain rent and food as he salvages parts for a true follow-up to his hardlight bow schematic.
* 2019: Dex finally manages a stable prototype hardlight bow, manages to fire three arrows into a trashcan before he runs out of power. He calls his device the Proto-Shot and begins to formulate a plan to further develop the weapon and use it to help the world as a hero.
* 2020: Dex develops a solar pack to strap to his back and connect to the Proto-Shot, giving him a whopping seven shots when everything performs optimally. However, there are still glitches in the system, much to his frustration. He hatches a plan to try and fight a villain and see if there might be interest in the tech he's developed, and perhaps even find further funding or aid.

Personality

Ambitious:
Dex has high aspirations. He wants to eventually be accepted among the pantheon of self-made heroes, and this constantly pushes him to develop more and more on his Proto-Shot and the hardlight tech under the hood.

Cool Under Pressure:
A side effect of his shyness is that he doesn't get flustered under pressure. He can keep his head straight and see a project through to the end without losing his composure, even if said end is a negative one.

Introverted:
Dex finds himself most comfortable in the presense of the quiet hum of electronics than being around other people. Despite his desire to become a hero and be accepted in that community, he has a low threshold for social activity, needing to excuse himself after even short bursts of talking to others.

Kind:
Though he is shy and introverted, Dex is also kind to a fault, willing to help people whenever he finds himself able. While not quite selfless, he's also nowhere near selfish either, willing to give with no expectation of return.

Proud:
Dex is proud of the progress he's made on his Proto-Shot and the hardlight technology running it. He's managed it mostly from scrap parts and small donations from his parents when they could, and though he's hit a wall here or there (and is currently against one), he's still incredibly touchy about it being mocked.

Shy:
Dex is shy, keeping his head down around others for the most part and seemingly unwilling or unable to initiate conversation. He can carry on a conversation easily enough, especially when the topic interests him, but he will rarely be the one to start things up.

Archery:
Dex has studied and practiced archery from the age of thirteen. He has a good eye and steady aim, able to hit a mark the size of a pool ball from roughly thirty-five meters.

Tech Tinkering:
Dex has an aptitude for repairing gizmos and building his own, even if the ones he builds tend to not last very long outside of his Proto-Shot. He can repair small electronics with relative ease, and he can usually disassemble and reassemble simple machines with relatively little effort.

Proto-Shot:
Dex's hardlight bow, it looks like a metal recurve without a string. He is able to deploy a string on command, and when fully drawn it is able to construct a hardlight arrow. The metal bow glows red when in use, the constructs sharing the same coloration.

Am I Good Enough?:
Dex has very poor self-esteem. It's not usually outwardly apparent, but he always wonders if he's good enough to do what he wants to do. He's always striving to be better, but he has a negative internal voice that can sometimes push him into dangerous situations in order to try and prove himself.

Normal:
Dex is absurdly normal. He has no superpowers, and he even lacks basic armor, combat training, and sometimes even common sense. His ambition often outstrips his abilities, outside of mental gymnastics, and this can lead him to taking risks he's really underequipped to handle.

Proud:
Dex's pride can sometimes blind and frustrate him if his work is attacked. He is very defensive in particular about his repair work and the Proto-Shot, and will lash out verbally if he percieves a slight. It's the one surefire way to break his composure.

You're My Idol!:
If an actual hero, especially one that either uses a bow themselves or has used technology to make themselves a hero, is around, Dex has a tendency to become somewhat starstruck. Whether this means freezing up or throwing himself into the fray to prove himself in front of them, he can often get himself into situations way outside of his abilities to deal with.
