Dinah Drake Lance was the first woman to don the mantle of Black Canary. The daughter of a tough-as-nails cop named Richard Drake, Dinah's major aspiration was to join the Gotham City Police Force.

She was rejected multiple times, despite being trained by some of the best fighters in Gotham. In 1940, with war looming in Europe, Dinah thought she had her chance as the police departments emptied. Instead, she was rejected a third and final time.

With crime surging in Gotham, Dinah took to the streets and applied her formidable martial skill to protecting the innocent. She adopted the moniker 'Black Canary' and ended up becoming a founding member of the Great Lakes Defenders. She helped protect America and Gotham from Nazis, Harbingers, and the criminal elements.

In 1948, the Great Lakes Defenders formally disbanded. Dinah Drake married her longtime love Larry Lance, and became the reigning East Coast Metropolitan Police boxing champion for ten years running. In 1960 she was appointed as the first female Commissioner of Police for Gotham City.

Her granddaughter, Dinah Laurel Lance, would discover her grandmother's humble 'Canary Cave' under Sherwood Florist, and follow in her footsteps as the next Black Canary.

Dinah Drake Lance passed away in 2004.
