Emily was born in New Zealand to a Kiwi Father and an American Mother, and since their deaths in early 2021 has moved to live with her Maternal Grandparents in NYC.

For most of her life her lack of motivation effectively hid the extent of her intellect, however in recent years her passion and enthusiasm for physics has made her genius evident (and annoyed family and teachers alike as they question why Emily never bothered to apply herself before).

A recent mishap with an attempt at a home-made particle accelerator has left her with super-powers and a metaphorical ticking timebomb in her chest. Not the best way to prepare for starting her senior year at Happy Harbor, but Emily does her best to live without regrets.

Timeline

Timeline:
* 2003: Emily Marie Roberts is born in Auckland, New Zealand to Brian and Evelyn Roberts.

* 2017: Emily surprises everyone when the seemingly average-at-best student shows a deep passion for and easy understanding of her High School science classes. While she continues to show little interest in most of her subjects, she achieves a perfect score in her science exam revealing an amazing intellect that has been hidden by her equally impressive lack of motivation.

* 2019: While her inconsistent grades prevent her from enrolling early in University, the University of Auckland's College of Science welcomes Emily to sit in on any of their lectures she wishes to. Physics gets the bulk of her focus while chemistry also gets some attention; biology is largely ignored.

* 2020: Emily's growing passion for physics seems to take whatever motivation she had to spare for her High School classes, and her grades begin to nosedive. While she excells in her Physics and Chemistry classes; she struggles to even achieve passing grades in her other classes as the content becomes more complex and her general knowledge isn't quite sufficient for her to coast on anymore.

* Jan 2021: Emily's Parents die in a car crash shortly before the beginning of her final year of High School and not long after an argument over her grades. Her closest living relatives are her maternal Grandparents in New York, and instead of a return to school Emily finds herself moving to the United States to live with them.

* Feb 2021: With the school year starting much later in the year in the northern hemisphere Emily's Grandparents decide not to enroll her in Happy Harbor immediately; both to give their now sullen and withdrawn Granddaughter time to grieve and avoid needlessly having her repeat part of her junior year.

* May 2021: With the imminent arrival of summer and a Granddaughter who is doing much better emotionally now Emily's Grandparents begin the process of enrolling her in Happy Harbor for the next school year. Emily herself, meanwhile, has taken over her Grandfather's garage and entertains herself studying physics, performing experiments, and building what she tells her Grandparents is a 'science fair project'.

* Jun 2021: Emily's 'science fair project' malfunctions. The aftermath is a hemispherical crater where her Grandfather's garage used to be and a teenage girl's life forever changed.

Personality

Confident:
Emily doesn't believe in second-guessing herself. She believes that if you simply make the best decision you can with the information you have available then worrying about whether it's the right decision or not is a waste of time. The problem being, of course, that teenagers don't always make the best decisions no matter how much information they have. She'll never be caught doubting herself though, and prefers to act rather than hesitate.

Independent:
Emily is a strong-willed and independent young woman. While she isn't specifically *against* relying on someone else, she tends to prefer to just handle everything on her own and will refuse anything she sees as charity. Fortunately for her, between her brains and her attitude she's usually able to manage just fine.

Protective:
Emily has always been protective of those around her, especially those she cares for. Never one to turn a blind-eye to the suffering of others; when she sees bullying, maliciousness, or cruelty she tends to lose her cool far more easily than normal and it's not uncommon for fists to start flying soon afterwards.

Powers

Flight:
Emily may not be able to fly at supersonic speeds, but with a maximum speed of around 300km/h she certainly has no reason to complain. Typically she flies at far more sedate speeds however, as maintaining her maximum speed for long periods can be incredibly exhausting.

Genius:
Emily is a genius, even if she doesn't tend to put much effort into expanding her horizons beyond physics. She doesn't have an incredibly broad existing general knowledge, but she learns quickly and understands easily when she manages to dredge up the motivation to do either.

Photon Blasts:
Emily can channel the cosmic energy within herself into energy projectiles fired from her hands. The blasts themselves are hardly stronger than her empowered punches, and she typically considers them an inefficient use of her power. But when something is too far away to punch and she can't or won't close the distance, it's a backup she's prepared to use.

Supernatural Durability:
With cosmic energy constantly radiating throughout her body, Emily is far more durable than a normal human. Regular firearms don't phase her, while she can actively channel her energy to ensure mundane explosives and high-calibur bullets are more likely to only bruise rather than break her; anti-tank weaponry, reasonable supernatural strength, or prolonged battles are generally required to cause her real trouble. She's far from invulnerable though; energy weapons tend to bypass her durability a little better than more conventional ones, with electricity bypassing it completely; and she's light enough that hits tend to throw her around a bit even if they don't exactly damage her.

Supernatural Strength:
While not as strong as many other superheroes with super strength, Emily can still throw a hell of a punch. The cosmic energy infusing her muscles enables her to lift 5 tons with a bit of effort, and up to 8 if she's pushing herself to the limit. Putting that force behind a punch with the appropriate leverage gives her fists that shouldn't be underestimated.

Skills

Brawling:
Though she's never had formal training, Emily's been in her fair share of schoolyard fights. While her form is no-doubt far from perfect she knows how to throw a solid punch and how to take a hit. After all it's all just applied physics in the end.

Physics:
Her one true love and only passion. Emily already has an astounding understanding of the field (especially high energy/particle physics) and lives for learning even more.

Resources

Inheritence:
The procedes from the sale of her Parents' house (after paying off the mortgage) is being held in trust by Emily's Grandparents, and the majority of their belongings are held in a storage unit in New Zealand. Her Grandfather is willing to make some or all of the money available to her for advancing her education or putting a deposit on a house, otherwise she will receive it on her 25th birthday.

Weaknesses

Electricity:
Eletric shocks ignore her superpowered durability and disrupt her powers for a time proportional to the strength of the shock. Even something as small as a static jolt from a car door can leave her defenseless for a good half-minute.

Encroachment:
The source of Emily's power is a mass of cosmic energy that has somehow replaced her heart and its functions without actually killing her. The seemingly benign phenomena has one major detriment however: it's growing. Every little use of her powers pushes it to take over more of her body; and while the parts of her converted into energy still seem to function and interact with the rest of her body normally Emily is not eager to discover what happens when she has no physical body left to be replaced.

Unmotivated:
A lack of motivation is something almost all of Emily's teachers have brought up in meetings and in reports, and it is just as apparent outside of school. If she doesn't find something particularly interesting or exciting, she will struggle with the desire to spend any effort at all on it. Emily herself would say there's nothing wrong with this, and that she simply prefers not to waste her time on things that don't matter. Her family and her schools tend to disagree.
