To some, he's a cold and impersonal individual with a very alien appearance. To others, he's a respected friend that is always available when you need him most, no matter what that need requires. Most importantly, he works with the members of the Justice League to bring Peace, Harmony, and Prosperity to this World so it doesn't suffer the same fate as his own.

History:
For a long time, the Martian ( Ma'aleca'andran) race existed as a malevolent, insular species with phenomenal pyrokinetic abilities, know as the Burning. Crippled by constant internal wars, they never developed particularly advanced technology, or posed any great threat to the Galaxy at large, but races that came across them knew that they were a species to be avoided. This changed during the war between the Celestials and the Demiurge, where the presence of the Burning Martians became an issue. The Guardians of the Universe, deciding that the race was too dangerous to be left to its own devices in case either side tried to harness their frightening potential released a programmed virus that changed the species forever. Firstly, the virus instilled an overpowering fear of fire into the psychic race-memory of the Martians, disabling their fearsome pyrokinetic ability. Secondly, the virus triggered a genetic divergence that caused the race to split into the White and Green Martian subspecies.

For a long time the two races of Martians fought in a bloody civil war. Eventually though the White Martians attempted a conquest of Earth (Thu'ulc'andra), and came into conflict with the Attilans. The combined Green Martian and Attilan forces defeated the White Martian invasion, and the Green Martians became the masters of Mars, the Whites mostly extinct outside their colonies on other worlds.

Under the dominance of the Green Martians, Mars became a planet of peace and learning. Though their pyrokinetic abilities were gone, the species retained formidable psychic power, and as the species grew in numbers and in wisdom, the collective subconscious of the psychic species developed into a semi-sentient race-memory, the Great Voice. Mars remained an insular world, but now due to the contemplative and pacifistic nature of this race of philosophers.

Some centuries ago a pair of twin brothers were born on Mars - J'onn J'onnz and Ma'alefa'ak. One a Martian of great psychic potential, the other a Martian with none. J'onn (who's name means 'Light to the light') became a Martian Manhunter, one of the Martian 'police', though in the context of that society the Manhunters also took the place of the Martian military. Ma'alefa'ak ('Darkness in the heart') became a scientist and grew ever more resentful of the culture of Mars, from which he was so isolated by his psychic disability. J'onn married a woman named M'yri'ah, and had two daughters; K'hym and T'ania.

A few hundred years ago, the forces of Apokalips found Mars. At this time Darkseid was not widely known, and he was able to present himself to the Martians as a friend and ally as he tried to find out more about this race. There he discovered amongst the philosophies of the Martians a secret that changed the course of the galaxy. The Martians had concluded that all value judgements must necessarily derive from consciousness, and therefore that life was the source of all good. The proof of this could be expressed mathematically, and in studying this concept, Martian philosophers had stumbled across a key part of the Life Equation. Darkseid realized that the existence of this equation implied the existence of an Anti-Life Equation. Determined to discover the secret, he kidnapped a number of Martians and took them to Apokalips to experiment on them in the hopes that by dissecting their minds he could uncover the equation.

History 2:
J'onn was part of a team of Manhunters who travelled to Apokalips to rescue the kidnapped Martians. The success of the Martians enraged Darkseid, who plotted his revenge in collaboration with J'onn's brother Ma'alefa'ak. The disaffected scientist, with the help from Apokalips, developed a psychic program that would trigger the genetic mechanisms of the ancient Oan virus - H'ronmeer's Curse. Infecting any Martian who communed psychically with another infected Martian, this virus caused their long-latent pyrokinetic abilities to trigger in an uncontrolled conflagration. Through the shared race-mind of the Great Voice, the virus spread around the planet in hours, virtually wiping out the entire Martian race. J'onn uncovered Ma'alefa'ak's plan too late to stop it, but in time to shut himself off from the Great Voice and survive the Martian Holocaust.

For three centuries, J'onn lived on Mars in isolation His few fellow survivors avoided each other for fear of the Curse, and the Great Voice fell silent. J'onn was almost broken by the tragedy that had befallen his world.

In 1941, a human scientist called Saul Erdel located a peculiar, intermittent signal originating from somewhere in central America -- the ancient remains of a White Martian portal device. In attempting to piggy-back this signal as a means of learning more about Mars, he opened a short-lived portal to Mars and brought J'onn to Earth. Erdel helped J'onn rebuild his sanity, and J'onn took the identity of a private detective, John Jones, to live on this new world.

J'onn came to realize that the White Martians had not entirely eliminated the meta-capabilities of the human race, and in this species was an opportunity to grow into something wonderful. Here on Earth, he believed, it would be possible for the Great Voice to awaken once more, and through that to resurrect the racial soul of Mars.

J'onn naturally gravitated towards Earth's growing metahuman community. He tried to mentor the burgeoning metahuman population from behind the scenes, adopting roles that could help propel his mission forwards. In 2012 during the Alien Alliance invasion he 'came out' as a Martian, and in the aftermath of that battle, he became a founding member of the Justice League.

Timeline:
1428 AD - J'onn J'onz and Ma'alefa'ak born on Mars.

1499 AD - J'onn becomes a Manhunter.

1576 AD - J'onn marries M'yri'ah, K'hym is born to them.

1581 AD - T'ania is born.

1646 AD - Agents of Darkseid appear on Mars; M'yri'ah is amongst those kidnapped and then rescued from Apokalips

1653 AD - H'ronmeer's Curse -- the Martian Holocaust and the end of the Martian Race.

1941 AD - J'onn accidentally teleported to Earth and takes the identity of John Jones, private detective.

1912 AD - J'onn reveals himself as a Martian and helps defend Earth from the Alien Alliance invasion. Becomes a founding member of the JLA.

Personality

Determined:
To have come through centuries of grief and attempt to rebuild a new life on a new world took great stores of will power and determination. Here on Earth he has a new mission that fires him: to protect it, as he had protected Mars as a Manhunter, and to help the world reach the potential he sees in it.

Humor:
Common to his species, J'onn's sense of humor is subtle. He delights in incongruities and paradoxes, and tends to express his delight in a fashion that's rather restrained by human standards. He may come across as cold by human standards if you don't know him, but those who do know him come to realize he can actually be surprisingly light-hearted.

Private:
J'onn is quite a private person. He feels a degree of isolation on Earth from even his closest friends, because he can not share with them the communion of the Great Voice that was so important to his people. His tragedy is something he prefers to leave in the past, and this makes him reluctant to tell much about himself to all but his closest friends.

Wise and Kind:
J'onn was born into a culture of altruistic philosophers, and it shows. He is kind and generous to friends and strangers alike, and will never shy away from doing a favor to those who need his help, or talking to those who need his advice. As with most Martians he has a very logical mind, but this logic is tempered with the warmth and emotional sensitivity of a species of telepaths - Martians are no Vulcans.

Flight:
The Martian Manhunter can fly at great speed and with little or no fatigue by manipulating magnetic fields, his own molecular structure as well as gravitons which are a subatomic particle associated with gravity itself. Flight for him is possible in space as well moving at speeds approaching lightspeed.

Genius Intellect:
The Martian Manhunter possesses highly advanced reasoning and logic capabilities as well as immense information retention, and uses them to great effect. His mental acuity allows him to learn languages, subjects and perform research with amazing speed. His mental speed is on par with his physical one, allowing him to think quickly and react just as quickly. Said mental capabilities also give him an edge when dealing with diverse cultures, or quickly adapt to new situations.

Invisibility:
By causing his skin to lose the ability to reflect light, the Manhunter can quickly become completely invisible to human sight. With a little added concentration and more alterations to his body, he can become invisible on the electromagnetic spectrum as well, including infrared and ultraviolet. This, however, doesn't affect other senses so that he could still be detected by them unless the right precautions are taken.

Martian Physiology:
The Martian's physiology would seem to be composed of a complex molecular chain that resembles polymer bonds but with the ability to be altered at will. The biopolymer is extremely flexible, durable, incredibly strong for a biological material and apparently self-sustaining. That basically means that J'onn doesn't need to eat, sleep, breathe, and his physical attributes are easily modifiable by him.

Martian Senses:
J'onn possesses nine different senses from his Martian physiology. He has increased standard senses of Smell, Sight, Touch, Hearing, and Taste. One of his addition senses function as a type of precognitive ability, warning him of danger or the intent of danger on him. He is capable of sensing motion in an area around him out to half a mile. He is able to sense the emotional state of individuals via a form of empathy. He can sense the presence of various radiations out to a mile.

Martian Vision:
J'onn has the ability to see into other spectrums of light, including electro-magnetic, infrared, ultraviolet, and thermal. He also has the ability not just to telescope his vision for long range, but to see down to the sub-atomic level, and see past illusions and various forms of invisibility.

Phasing:
By decreasing the density of his body J'onn can phase through solid matter, becoming intangible and passing through every substance effortlessly.

Regeneration:
The Martian Manhunter possesses truly amazing regenerative capabilities. No matter how severe the damage, J'onn will regenerate it within seconds, thanks to a combination between his mental powers and his shapeshifting. As long as there'll be a single part of him, no matter how small, he will be able to regenerate. It will take longer, of course, if he's scattered around the universe as little atomic particles! But other than that, cuts, bruises, severed limbs and even beheading are not really a problem.

Shapeshifting:
The Martians' powerful telekinesis provides them with the ability to rearrange their bodies on a molecular level. As is tradition, J'onn favors two body forms -- his public and private forms. His public form which is nowadays rather human-like in appearance is tall, muscular, green and beetle-browed. His private form, which he only adopts amongst family or close friends is taller and more slender, with a more insectivorous appearance.

He is however capable of taking on a wide variety of forms, the manipulation of density allowing him to vary his body volume dramatically in the process. With a little effort he can mimic virtually anyone's appearance and even voice if he takes the time to study them first.

Super Durability:
The natural biomorphic structure of his body grants the Manhunter a natural resistance to almost all forms of kinetic energy, however he is able to modify his density and structure to greatly enhance said resistance, becoming nearly invulnerable to most forms of damage. That, paired with his shapeshifting, phasing, and physiology, makes him very difficult to harm with nonmagical means, and hazardous environments do not affect him. Magic, by working in his own particular way, is however much more difficult to defend against using his durability, at least.

Super Speed:
Being able to manipulate not only his structure, but also magnetic field and gravitational particles, the Manhunter can move at truly great speeds. Be it running, flying, dodging or even catching bullets, his speed is great enough to allow him to fly around Earth in a matter of seconds. This isn't limited to physical speed both in wider or more precise movements, but applies to speed of thought as well.

Super Stamina:
The Manhunter's physiology grants him an extremely high stamina which, paired with the fact he doesn't need to breathe and his muscles work in a different way, allows him to operate with no fatigue for extremely long periods of time. Even if he needs rest from time to time, something he achieves via meditation, it is unknown for how long he could function without any rest and at top efficency.

Super Strength:
One of the strongest beings on the planet, the Manhunter can effortlessly lift over 100 tons while at a resting state. Due to the long and complex molecular chains forming his biomorphic structure, as well as his telekinetic skills, he can lift incredible weights and extremely large objects without them crumbling under the stress. His strength can however be further enhanced by modifying his structure and density, allowing him to easily surpass his limits and stalemate, and even draw blood with strength alone, from beings such as Kryptonians. Currently, the limits to his strength are unknown.

Telekinesis:
J'onn is capable of psychokinetically projecting force and manipulating matter, both in large quantities and in minute detail. He can manipulate over 100 tons of mass with almost no fatigue, and strike with similar levels of force without significant strain. His fine control aspect allows him to manipulate at the sub-atomic level. J'onn can also shield himself and others from attacks with the same level of power. However each individual he shields lowers the overall durability of each shield. J'onn also can propel others in flight, protecting them from the gravitational forces, and providing a safe environment for travel in extreme environments.

Telepathy:
The Martian Manhunter is an immensely powerful and highly skilled telepath. The full suite of psychic skills is available to him-- empathic reading, misdirection, thought-reading, psychic chirurgy, sending mental communiques, language constructs, astral projection and puppeteering foes. J'onn is capable of seeking out strong psychic presences at significant distances, even on the other side of the Earth. He can detect life forms by their empathic as well as telepathic signatures. With these powers Jonn can deteremine if a creature is intelligent or not through mental contact.

Fighting:
J'onn has been trained in martian martial arts, a form of hand to hand combat that blends his physical abilities, telekinetic powers and shapeshifting. He can efficently use sharp or blunt weapons that he can shift from his own body, in addition to unarmed fighting. To complement his skillset, he learned various fighting styles from Earth as well, even if he rarely has to use them.
His fighting prowess don't extend only to the physical sphere, his intellect allows him to be quite proficent in analyzing tactics and strategies, and said acuity can come in handy when learning the use of new weapons or styles.

Investigation:
J'onn has been trained and developed the ability to perform Investigation and Analysis. J'onn has the ability to use deductive reasoning to come to a conclusion. In most cases, this skill is applied to the arena of criminal investigation.

Linguistics:
His intellect, paired with telepathy, allows the Manhunter to learn languages extremely quickly so that, by now, he knows most if not all languages spoken on Earth, being able to speak them like a native and even learn specific dialects in a matter of moments. His communication skills, however, are not limited to spoken language, but experience taught him how to effectively read body language as well, in humans at least.

Identities:
Thanks to his shapeshifting, it is not difficult for J'onn to impersonate and maintain various identities. And indeed, there are several certified identities that he can assume, in several spheres and fields. Most of them are created to be easy to manage without always being seen around, some others require a bit more maintenance, task that he performs diligently.

Justice League:
As one of its founder members, J'onn can count on the Justice League's members and resources just as they can count on him. It is also publicly known that the Martian Manhunter is one of the lLeague's founders, and that relects on his public image.

Kuru Pendant:
A Kuru pendant represents a Martian's most intimate connection with his or her heritage. When a young Martian passes a rite of passage known as the Journey of Souls, a Martian elder awards them a Kuru pendant. The pendant maintains the genealogical memory of all who came before, and the recipient telepathically interacts with the medallion in order to develop a greater understanding of Martian lore and culture.

The Kuru pendant maintains comprehensive information relating to the longstanding oral Martian tradition. By using telepathy, a Martian can interface with the pendant and gain access to all of its store knowledge. As such, the Martian can also telepathically add information into the stored database. J'onn has been using this over the last two decades to help rebuild his knowledge of his Heritage, Species, and try to put together what happened to his Planet. Additionally, it is a great archive in which to store informations, and from which informations can be easily retrieved at a later time.

Alien:
J'onn lived on Earth for centuries, but he is still an alien. No matter how much he studied humans, his mind is still different and sometimes work in different ways. No matter the fact he can shapeshift into a human, his true form is still alien, and something many humans are not ready, or do not want to see.

Enemies:
With powerful friends comes just as powerful Enemies. J'onn has supported the Justice League as a founding member, and during that time has developed a friendship with the other founding members. Their enemies has become his enemies, and he never hesitates to come to their aid. He has crossed some of the most powerful people on the Earth and in the Universe, and some of them surely have a good memory.

Fire:
Like all Martians, J'onn has the psychosomatic fear of fire and a weakness to intense heat stemming from the Oan manipulation that split the Burning Martian race millennia ago. In J'onn's case it is exacerbated by of the trauma of being almost the lone survivor of H'ronmeer's curse, and witnessing his family go up in flames.

He has had time to get used to living on a world where there are often small fires in the environment, and small amounts of controlled flame in his general area he can cope with - even the presence of a fire burning in a fireplace, though it will make him feel uneasy. However getting close to even such fires takes an act of will, and even a match waved in his face is enough to make him momentarily flinch.

Basically, fire is J'onn's kryptonite. Although it won't normally harm him physically, significant amounts of flame, particularly if they are out of control or used against him, is enough to paralyze him with fear.

Normally this would be a purely psychological issue, but when you're a being who's mind controls their very physical makeup, phobias can be physical too. In the presence of particularly fierce flames J'onn is in danger of losing control of his body entirely, collapsing into an incoherent fluid-like state, and losing the telekinetic finessing of his molecules that makes him normally so invulnerable to harm.

Last of a Dying Race:
While not quite the last, J'onn's species is pretty much gone and J'onn is a lonely being. This would be hard enough on anyone, but on a Martian it's particularly hard because for millennia the Martians had defined themselves through their relationship with the Great Voice, the shared subconscious mind of their race. With Mars dead, the Great Voice has fallen silent, and this makes J'onn feel unutterably lonely. Before H'ronmeer's curse, Martians would find it hard to be distant from their homeworld for long, but J'onn has been cut off from it for centuries. The Great Voice is the racial soul of the Martians -- from J'onn's perspective, he is virtually cut off from his own soul.

J'onn needs a mission. He needs friends. Without these things to drive him, he is prone to falling back into despair. Equally, his sense of separation is something that can be manipulated - highlighting to him his losses and his isolation can drive him to set himself apart more from the very people who anchor him.

Oreos:
It has been suggested that something within J'onn's physiology makes him addicted to the chemicals used in the Earth snack, Oreos. Withdrawal symptoms include violent bursts of rage and loss of intellect. However, these claims have never been accurately substantiated, and may even be false. To be on the safe side, it's better to have some oreos at hand anyways!
