2011 - 2014 - Kate begins a wastrel life as a socialite, drowning her depression in alcohol and other substances. After beating a mugger into submission while still in a drunken stupor, Kate is kept from killing her assailant by the sudden appearance of Batman. She is inspired to follow his example.

Personality

Controlling:
"Even if your mom and sister hadn't died, you would've driven them away ... you control freak." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #3

The other side of Kate's disciplined and iron-willed nature is a desire to do things her way. As a mentor, she brooks no dissent or questioning of her methods. As an ally, she has no qualms about pointing out perceived flaws and attempting to push a plan of her own design. Her base of operations is meticulously organised, with everything in its place and woe betide any who seek to do some rearranging or spring cleaning. Kate has difficulty letting herself go with the flow, preferring to redirect the flow as she sees fit.

Disciplined:
"There are monsters in this world. I have seen them. They don't all have sharp fangs and long limbs. I have spent every moment since I was eight years old training myself to fight them." - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #949

Kate was raised as a military brat by parents who were both soldiers. Though they were not unloving, she was raised to refer to her father as 'sir' and her formative years were highly regimented. The deaths of her mother and twin sister gave her greater focus, and she has developed the iron strength of will required to be a masked vigilante in Gotham City. Though she's not beyond having fun and letting her hair down, she has the unparalleled ability to focus absolutely on her mission. This allows her to pick up new skills, conduct in-depth research, and spend weeks on surveillance without flagging or losing her motivation.

Driven:
"Her training is excellent, and she has all the right instincts. More importantly, she has the one thing I can't teach. That hole inside her that can't ever be filled, no matter how many criminals she takes down ... it gives her the drive to do this. It's time she and I have a serious discussion about the future." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #0

The loss of Kate's mother and twin sister affected her deeply. She has not fully recovered from it, and it is likely that no amount of therapy or time will help her truly get over this. Rather than become despondent or broken, however, she has dedicated herself to her mission. She approaches the insurmountable task of fighting a war on Gotham's criminal element unflinchingly, continuing to move forward. She is always motivated in what she does, able to put aside the nagging questions such as 'why do I do this?' and 'what am I achieving?' Once she has set her eyes on her objective, there is next to nothing that will sway her.

Honor the Bat:
"The symbol of the Bat saved my life. Saved my soul." - Batwoman (vol. 3) #6

Kate was not brought into the fold of Batman's disciples in the same way others were. She was not a broken child or teenager taught to hone her grief and rage into a razor's edge. She did not discover the Symbol of the Bat and the meaning behind it until she was an adult, and she sought out her training on her own. But she has always understood that the Symbol of the Bat represents something important to the people of Gotham, and she strives to abide by that. Though she is not beholden to Batman's rules, she chooses to abide by them and honor them in her own way. She may have her differences with the man sometimes, but she has nothing but respect for what he represents.

Independent:
"My dad was so afraid that if I got close to you, your mission would consume me. That I'd lose sight of what was important to us and become an extension of you. But the second I knew it was my cousin Bruce under the mask, that was never a risk. I knew why you fought, and I understood it ... but most of all I knew I needed to find my own, separate path. This fight was mine." - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #949

Unlike the others in the Batman's orbit, Kate is not blinded by his way of doing things. She admires the symbol he has made and uses it to her own ends, but she is fiercely independent about it. Rarely does she ask herself the question 'what would Batman do?', instead trying to decide what Batmoman does. While she admires and respects the Bat Family and their capabilities, she is determined to maintain her own operation separate from theirs. She will be a happy ally and confidante, but the war she is fighting is her own and stems from a grief not shared by the Disciples of the Bat.

Indominable:
"I left Gotham thinking I knew how to hold my own in a fight. In a boxing ring in Serbia, I had that overconfidence beaten out of me. I learned how to fight with a concussion, blind and deaf, even standing in a puddle of my own blood." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #0

Kate is that rare breed that can take a beating and keep coming. Her military discipline and dedication to her mission give her a strength of will almost unparalleled amongst the superhero set. This can sometimes manifest as a stubborn streak, wherein Kate picks a course of action and stubbornly refuses to back down from it without some serious convincing. It also tends to convince her that her own way is the correct way, preventing her from hearing advice and different perspectives when she may need them most.

Pride:
"Tell me this is a misunderstanding, Kane. And that it will never happen again."

"'A cadet shall not lie, cheat, or steal, nor suffer others to do so.' I'm sorry, sir. I can't. I'm gay." - Batwoman: Rebirth

Kate sacrificed a promising military career on the altar of truth. She refused to be dishonest about who she was for the sake of staying at West Point, and as such was discharged with all her hopes of a promising career dashed. Kate is gay and proud of it, having no qualms about public displays of affection or saying as much when asked. She attends pride marches whenever she can and donates liberally to LGBTQI+ causes. Beyond this, Kate is proud of her whole identity. She was raised Jewish and although she is not as practicing as she might or should be, she makes a point of observing all the religious holidays. Kate Kane knows who she is and refuses to make any apologies or excuses for it.

True Soldier:
"Batman had plenty of chances to find another way. I saw what was going to happen. I determined the action that would save the most lives, and I took it. Any police officer or soldier would make the same call and they would be commended. I was taught the rules of engagement. And it was time to engage." - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #974

Kate follows what she calls the 'Batman Rule' - which essentially boils down to no guns, no killing. However, unlike others who follow this rule it is not out of a sense of slavish, dogmatic devotion to an ideal. Instead, Kate does it out of respect. She wears the Batman's symbol, and as such she honors it. But at heart she has the pragmatism of a soldier and had dedicated herself foremost to completing her mission objective and doing so with as little loss of life. If this means having to kill one monsters to save a hundred people, she will do it. If this means having to use a firearm, she will use it. She respects the Batman Rule, but she is a soldier and not a cultist.

Violent:
"Even now, I sometimes hear her voice, trying to imitate your bark, but always with a hint of mom's Boston accent. She's in my head, telling me when it's enough ... when I've fought enough, bled enough, punished someone enough ... " - Batwoman (vol. 2) #0

Ever since Kate was a child, she's had a violent streak. When she was young, she would win fights but had to rely on her sister to let her know when the fight was one - often not letting up until Beth had begged her to stop. With Beth no longer around, Kate has to be that voice of reason for herself. Typically, she is able to keep herself in check, but when something truly raises her ire, she is known to go beyond what might be deemed entirely 'necessary' for a fight. Her strong will and disciplined attitude prevent her from ever killing in a passion, but that doesn't prevent her from breaking bones, shedding blood, and enjoying herself while she's at it.

Physical Conditioning:
"In a torture chamber beneath Paris, I had all that ignorance stripped away. I learned what it felt like to run thirty-six miles with four broken ribs and lungs burned by tear gas, to climb six stories with a dislocated arm and a ruptured Achilles, to endure seven days of nonstop electro-interrogation and sleep deprivation and water boarding." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #0

It takes an extraordinary physicality to go out night after night and tangle with armed foes using little more than your fists, cunning, and some technological toys. Kate keeps herself in tremendous physical shape and has been keeping up with an exacting workout routine for several years now. She is able to persevere even when stabbed, shot, burnt, electrocuted - she soldiers on through the pain, often hiding injuries sustained as Batwoman by simply gritting her teeth through the pain.

Her reaction times have been recorded at speeds roughly seven times faster than the human eye can blink and her physical strength is as such that she's even able to stand toe to toe with opponents on the low end of the super strength spectrum and make them feel her attacks and throw full grown men around bodily. She can hold her breath for several minutes and has the endurance to run for hours without flagging. While there is nothing superhuman about her physical capabilities, she is certainly at the very upper levels of what a human being is capable of.

Willpower:
"Scarecrow's fear toxin - Colony Prime and I both got a dose - he seems some video game, I see whatever fresh Hell this is. But none of this is real, Kate. You have to deny it! Deny it!" - Batwoman (vol. 3) #9

Kate has an incredible strength of will. The sort of tenacity required to work through pain, fear, doubt, exhaustion and all the other crap that being a masked vigilante can throw at her. She has the sort of willpower necessary to force her way through the vivid, incapacitating hallucinations brought on by the likes of the Scarecrow's fear toxin and has even been able to fight off an armed mugger with ease while drunk to the point of being unable to see straight. Psychic attacks have to work all the harder to break through her mental conditioning, making her mind difficult to read and influence.

Skills

Aviation:
"Alice's bats are gone, incinerated - take the Sequoia airship, get airborne -" Batwoman (vol. 3) #16

During her years abroad training with her father's allies, Kate learned how to pilot a number of fixed wing and rotor aircraft. She specializes in smaller and more maneuverable craft but has enough experience and basic understanding of the instrumentation to get behind the stick of almost anything. She's not going to be performing tricks or stunts, but she knows how to fly from point A to point B and is even capable enough to survive a dogfight or two.

Business:
"I need to be at the office early tomorrow. Big, important meeting." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #2

Kate never attended business school, preferring not to return to college after her discharge from West Point. Nevertheless, she came from an incredibly wealthy family and it's said that the Kanes have always had a nose for business. Kate understands the intricacies of the market and economics, especially in finance where she works as the manager of a large, Gotham-based hedge fund. Kate's qualifications as a businesswoman are not in paper but in her experience, and many intrinsically trust the Kane Family name on sight.

Chemistry:
"Tests on its composition tell me it's some sort of an epoxy bonded with part kaolin, calcium, oxide, phosphorus pentoxide and - wait, why does that all sound familiar?" - Batwoman (vol. 3) #11

At first blush, Kate possesses a college-level understanding of chemistry. She understands the table of elements, the interactions of atoms, and their various reactions, compositions, and properties. In the realm of applying this scientific discipline to criminal investigation, however, Kate's knowledge is far more advanced. Not only is she able to use her knowledge and forensic skills to determine the chemical composition of certain compounds using even the most portable and barebones of tools. She can also apply this knowledge towards homebrewing compounds of her own such as flashbang grenades, smoke pellets, and other gasses or explosives.

Demolitions:
"And the explosives weren't any more complex than the ones I learned to disarm in Belfast." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #0

Kate has spent time studying at the feet of veteran demolition experts, a status one does not attain without a healthy respect and understanding of explosives. She is able to mentally perform the calculations and physical equations necessary to determined just how much explosive may be required to achieve the desired result, often on the fly while doing something equally taxing. She has acquired knowledge of the chemistry behind manufacturing more basic explosives and can concoct her own when necessary, although she still ventures onto the black market for more advanced and robust formulas. Finally, she can apply her knowledge in reverse to determine what kind of explosives caused a specific kind of damage or even defuse them if she has enough time.

Disguise:
"But I'm more an armor gal than ruffles and bodices, so keep your eyes where I can see 'em." - Batwoman Annual (vol. 2) #2

Gathering intel can't always be done lurking in the shadows in high heels and a batsuit. Likewise, it can't always be done as billionaire heiress Kate Kane. To that end, Kate has gotten into the practice of developing disguises. She's already very adept at purchasing and maintaining wigs that allow for her hair to look drastically different and can adopt a different sort of demeanor that would make few people think Kate Kane and Batwoman are one and the same. She could theoretically develop a few different personas, wearing a different wig and putting on clothes that she might not normally wear just to make her look different. She can only really look like a woman with her build and coloration, but that still leaves a lot of room to work with.

Driving:
"No I wasn't, I was not, I was doing forty, tops." - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #859

Kate is a skilled driver, on par with professional race drivers in terms of reflexes and response time. Her primary mode of transport as Batwoman is a modified motorcycle which she is skilled enough with to maneuver off-road and even across rooftops if she's able to get it up there. She's can also drive a car, although her maneuverability tends to be more limited given that most cars are not suped-up crotch rockets like her Ducati. Nevertheless, she's capable of high-energy, high-speed chases through busy urban streets without running the risk of crashing.

Electronics:
"You're smarter than you give yourself credit for, Kate." - Batwoman Annual (vol. 2) #1

Much of Kate's Batwoman gear contains fine electronics that inevitably get damaged and need repairing or replacing. More rarely, Kate will come up with an idea or spot a deficit in her arsenal that she cannot fulfill through a purchase on the black market. She's developed a number of skills in electronics and engineering, allowing her to repair and modify her equipment as well as constructing new devices outright as she has a need for them. She is not a genius on the super-heroic level, and most of her creations could be recreated in a professional-grade workshop by someone with the skills to do so, but they are enough to allow her to be self-sufficient.

Escapology:
"You shall not ... escape ... "

"If I had a dollar for every time I've heard that ... " - Batwoman Annual (vol. 2) #2

Though Kate would prefer not to get caught at all, sometimes it happens. She finds herself bound in ropes, or handcuffs, or chains, or some bizarre death trap concocted by a fractured psyche. Regardless of what it is, Kate has developed the skills necessary to get out of it. She knows how to dislocate most of her joints at will without causing permanent damage and has practiced working knots with her hands tied and while under varying degrees of duress. Even though there are likely constraints and confinements that could hold her for a time, it is unlikely that any could hold her indefinitely.

Firearms:
"When he shrinks back to his normal size ... we might be able to neutralize him. My father gave me a weapon, a kind of gun- " - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #973

Unlike others of the Bat Family, Kate Kane has no moral aversion to the use of firearms. In her mind, they are simply another weapon to be employed when needed. As such, Kate continues to train with firearms ranging from sidearms to rifles and even keeps some on hand should she needs them. She's a deft shot, able to hit her mark from the maximum effective range with most weapons provided they are not too unlike the sort of firearms she drills with. While only less-than-lethal weapons see common use in her arsenal as Batwoman, she makes certain to keep her skills sharp. As well as being a crack shot, she knows how to clean, strip, repair, and modify most firearms and possesses the tools to do so.

First Aid:
"No! It's not a kill shot, it's not - !" - Batwoman (vol. 3) #6

An important skill for the modern soldier is the ability to apply first aid. Kate learned this early on in her studies at West Point and has made sure to keep herself apprised of modern techniques and methods as they are developed and more widely implemented. She is able to tend to cuts, bullet wounds and other trauma in a way that will allow the victim (be it herself or someone else) to survive long enough for proper medical care to be given. This understanding also allows her to quickly determine by sight just how life-threatening an injury may be with all the precision and accuracy of a veteran EMT.

Forensics:
"No footprints?"

"Only those left by the Gotham P.D. But this is my crime scene now." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #1

The art of understanding and interpreting the crime scene. Kate keeps herself up to date with every cutting-edge advancement in this field, allowing herself to do the work of an entire CSI team by herself and often in the handful of minutes she has before police arrive on the scene. She has broad and detailed knowledge in a wide range of fields from anthropometry and ballistics to fingerprinting and DNA analysis. Kate has also employed this knowledge of forensic science in creating her own crime scene kit in her utility belt, allowing her to make sure she brings the exact tool needed to complete her investigation.

Gymnastics:
"Just because you survived Beast at the Point and you were senior elite in gymnastics doesn't mean you're a damn crimefighter." - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #860

Kate possesses the strength, balance, flexibility, and agility of a competition-level gymnast. She can move through the air and tumble just as comfortably as she might walk and possesses the upper body strength to hold herself aloft by one hand (which can be very useful when dangling from ledges high above Gotham's streets). Rather than compete, Kate has chosen to adopt these skills into her martial arts style and overall crimefighting skillset, making her difficult to hit and capable of swinging out over the streets of Gotham without any trouble at all. She's also developed skills in parkour, able to freerun across the most difficult terrain and treat the sometimes sloping and crumbling rooftops of Gotham City as though they were a sidewalk.

Interrogation:
"Where is he? ... one of you will tell me ... " - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #861

Sometimes, the criminals just don't want to tell you what they know. As Batwoman, Kate has learned to let her reputation (such as it is) precede her and to let the promise of violence influence people to talk where otherwise they might be more inclined towards silence. When the mere threat of violence doesn't work, Kate is more than capable of inflicting pain and injury to get what she's looking for. As well as knowing how to ask, Kate is also adept at finding out just which weak point to exploit. She can look at a crowd and spot the one individual who would rather blab about his boss than go home with broken fingers.

Investigation:
"Dammit! How long has this been going on? How long have you been running around playing vigilante?!"

"Six months on intel give or take, about that long again on operations. And I'm not playing at anything. Sir." - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #860

Believe it or not, there is more to crimefighting than simply waiting on rooftops for muggings to happen. Sure, that is part of it, but to make a real difference one needs to go to the source. Kate's time in the military taught her that good intel was just as important as physical skill, and she's taken these teachings with her into her career as Batwoman. She possesses the agile and lateral-thinking mind required to piece complex clues together in order to create a larger, logical picture. She is adept at laying down surveillance, able to create robust profiles on individuals who may not even be aware that anyone is watching them. She has also learned to keep case files and logs of all her activities, making sure she can always draw two disparate threads together if they happen to emerge even months apart.

Linguistics:
"Where the Hell are all the low-lifes when I need someone to punch? I mean, it's Gotham, for God's sake. Our flag should say 'Liberte, Egalite, Criminalite.'" - Batwoman (vol. 2) #32

Kate moved around a great deal as a child and picked up a number of different languages in the process. She speaks fluent English, French, and Hebrew as a result of her upbringing. She is also conversant in Yiddish, Portuguese, and Pashto. She also has the basic knowledge of syntax, grammar, and linguistic rules required to pick up new languages fairly easily when the need arises.

Martial Arts:
"That move she uses doesn't exist in any fighting styles I've studied. It's something she invented herself. Almost got the best of me." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #0

As a teenager, Kate was taught to box by her father and became good enough to compete for and win the women's boxing club championship at West Point. From there, Kate's understanding of martial arts bloomed outward into an ever-increasing web of new disciplines and techniques. During her military training she mastered the Modern Army Combatives (MAC), an admixture of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, judo, Eskrima and wrestling. From there, she mastered the aggressive Kyokushin school of Karate and travelled abroad to learn Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do, and Wing Chun Kung fu.

While Kate could likely qualify as a master of all these forms of combat, she has combined them all into a style that is uniquely her own. She is not limited solely to the techniques taught in these disciplines, either, able to apply concepts she has learned to develop new moves of her own. Her combative style is constantly evolving as she learns from experience and observation of other skilled fighters, meaning she is only ever improving.

Medicine:
"Then I found myself somewhere in Africa, learning how to administer vaccines and treat gangrene and feed starving kids without killing them." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #0

Although Kate is far from a doctor, she has a basic understanding of medicine, anatomy, and psychology. She knows how to administer vaccines, take pathology samples, and even perform basic examinations to determine obvious ailments. She lacks the necessary training and experience to put this knowledge to serious, practical use but her understanding of the theory aids her greatly in her investigations. She is adept at performing post-mortem examinations to determine cause of death and other contributing factors. She'd make a poor doctor, but a fair coroner or army medic.

Occultism:
"Maria, you'll never escape. You will be dispelled. Do you understand me?" - Batwoman (vol. 2) #5

Oddly enough, Kate's career as Batwoman has seen her run across some strange foes - some of whom are of a mystical nature. While she got into the game to bust criminal heads, Kate has taken the occasional appearances of ghosts, cultists, and other, weirder things in stride. She's not the foremost expert on the subject, but she owns numerous texts on these metaphysical subjects and has even learned a few techniques for dispelling less powerful spirits. She won't be running for Sorceress Supreme of Gotham anytime soon, but her acceptance that such things exist has allowed her to get a jump on them by studying their weaknesses.

Stealth:
"The guards are of no concern. They believe that five defensive runes, two fingerprint access doors and three laser tripwires will do the job." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #9

Stealth is the bread and butter of the urban masked vigilante. Batwoman frequently deals with armed opponents who outnumber her, so charging at them in a full-frontal assault is a good way to get shot. She has instead mastered the art of moving silently, able to disappear into shadows and find cover even in brightly lit rooms (though she avoids such places as the myth of Batwoman tends to wilt under fluorescent light). As well as being able to move quietly, Kate is able to move quickly with the use of distractions to disappear even when people are looking right at her. Further to this, she has a robust understanding of security systems that allows her to avoid or disable security cameras to avoid getting her image caught on tape.

Streetwise:
"Good. I'm impressed by your progress, Ka - Batwoman. I think I'll let you stay in Gotham. Care to join me on patrol?"

"Yeah. I think I will." - Batwoman Annual (vol. 2) #1

Running around Gotham's rooftops as a vigilante doesn't work well if you're constantly consulting Google Maps. Kate has made a point of studying the city down to the subterranean levels, knowing the location of every important landmark, able to identify most streets at a glance and even able to tell when she's in Gotham just by the smell in the air. As well as the layout, Kate knows the major players in town and many of the criminal caste by reputation or name. She knows how to get information out of the City, and is very much at home working there.

Survival:
"I left Gotham believing I knew how to survive. And then I crossed the Sahara on foot, living off insects and snakes and a teaspoon of morning dew." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #0

Kate learned the basic survival skills taught at the United States Military Academy, as well as more advanced and robust techniques at the Airborne and Air Assault Schools. Then she was dropped in the Sahara and forced to cross it with only her wits to keep her alive. As a result, Kate has developed a broad array of survival skills that allow her to function comfortably in any setting from the deepest wilderness to the most developed urban jungle. She can find shelter, food, and water - all the necessities of life. What's more, she intrinsically understands the limits of her own body and knows how far she can push it in such situations before it will begin to fatigue or break down entirely.

Tactics:
"With your background, you understand how to work as a unit. You are frankly better suited to the task than I am. And I know I can trust you with the job." - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #934

Kate is a consummate tactician. She understands the intricacies of working as unit, as well as making the split-second decisions that are the difference between success and failure. She has studied strategy and military treatises from a wide array of cultures, and is well-versed in small unit, offensive, defensive, and deception maneuvers. Not only does she understand how to employ these with groups, but she also knows how to best use them in her night-to-night work as Batwoman. This makes her a dangerous foe who often divines her enemies' weaknesses and uses them against them.

Throwing Weapons:
"That's not an arrowhead. It's a throwing dart. Made out of a slice of sentient tech. It's self-propelled, responds to voice commands, and even has a splash of classified alien A.I., making it smarter than half the people in this room." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #7

The hallmark skill of all vigilantes, the ability to throw small metal versions of your insignia is an absolute necessity when fighting crime. Kate is incredibly accurate with her 'thorns', able to throw multiple at once to hit precision targets from a distance, and even bank them off surfaces to make them ricochet around corners. This ability easily translates to other thrown weapons such as knives, small gel-encased explosives, baseballs (if you're into that) and just about anything else that can be hurled violently at someone's head.

Toxicology:
"... cyanogen chloride. It's a blood agent ... works through inhalation as well as skin absorption, it's not picky. Once in the body it gets broken town, turns into cyanide. Non-flammable. Blow it up, it just turns to a vapor that's heavier than air ... " - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #857

Many of Gotham's criminals enjoy using poisons of different varieties as part of their crimes. Kate learned quickly that one of the quickest way to track certain of these criminals was to be able to spot their calling card. Kate sent away for texts focusing on biology, chemistry, and pharmacology to get a better understanding of the field. She is able to easily identify most common (or common for Gotham) toxicants with the proper equipment and is even able to recognize their effects in individuals on sight in many cases.

Bat-Computer:
"It's been the 21st century for awhile now, red one, and if your little Bat-Computer was singing before I got here, she's trilling out arias now." - Batwoman (vol. 3) #1

While not the dizzying array of bleeding edge technology that its namesake is, Kate Kane's Bat-Computer is perhaps the best money can buy. It is hooked up to servants that reside in a secured area of her base of operations in the R. H. Kane Building, and is linked up to an array of laptops kept there and at secondary locations across Gotham City and beyond. She has 'acquired' a large amount of proprietary software used by crime scene investigators, as well as other software that she has deemed useful. There's always room for improvement, but the Bat-Computer makes Kate's life infinitely easier.

Batsuit:
"Red and black ... Gevurah, the Pillar of Severity ... the colors of war." - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #860

Batwoman's uniform is a marvel of modern engineering, designed and constructed with the help of her father using cutting edges processes and textiles. The whole outer surface is treated with what is known as a 'shear thickening compound' which allows it to be completely flexible but also stab resistant and bulletproof from medium range. The cape itself is woven from a nanotube composite which, though not as durable as pure carbon nanotubes, is incredibly durable and light with weights at the end to allow Kate to glide short distances with it.

There is also electronics built into the suit itself, such as bio-monitors that allow anyone at her Bat-Computer to monitor her condition. They also tie into a GPS relay, so she can pinpoint her own position if she is somehow lost. The radio built into the cowl is highly encrypted on a screech repeater back to her base of operations. The eyelets of the cowl itself are designed to cycle through the electromagnetic spectrum in response to the motion of her face muscles, allowing Batwoman to switch from low light, to infrared, and further with ease.

Disciples of the Bat:
"Before you even ask, I haven't decided to join your private army yet. The whole thing just sounds a little ... over-the-top. And I don't need a new uniform." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #2

Batwoman is a separate operation from the rest of the Bat Family. She was not mentored by Batman, she did not really have to struggle to earn the right to wear her uniform from him, and she doesn't get mad at him when he's a terrible father figure because he isn't that for her. Despite all that, however, Batwoman is still a known quantity amongst the Bat Family. She knows what they can do, and they know about her in turn. There's a form of respect there, and she's trusted to operate without oversight or handholding. She's also not against working with the Family from time to time, as they sometimes have skills or equipment that she is lacking.

Drones:
"So much for old friends. At least the drones return my calls." - Batwoman (vol. 3) #3

The drones are military hardware that Kate has acquired and repurposed for her own use as Batwoman. They are small and maneuverable, able to take reconnaissance footage well as allow others using her Bat-Computer's network to observe her process. They have a wide enough range that she can operate them comfortably from almost anywhere in Gotham City provided there's nothing to block the signal, at which point they are automated to return to their docks at the R. H. Kane Building. They are lightly armored and can be used as battering rams in a pinch, but do not possess any actual weaponry.

Finances:
"It's my fault. I should never have gotten involved with anyone so privileged. You take everyone for granted." - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #854

As heiress to the Kane Family fortune, Kate is a billionaire several times over. She is part of one of Gotham's oldest, wealthiest families and has inherited the lion's share of that estate. Her non-liquid assets are legion, ranging from properties all over Gotham and beyond to a yacht (the Sequoia) and a number of fancy cars and artworks acquired over several lifetimes of having more dollars than sense. Kate's day job is as a hedge fund manager for Kane Capital, which itself nets her a very comfortable salary. Without surmising her wealth in terms of a pure figure, Kate has enough money to never want for anything and is likely one of the wealthiest women in the world.

Jacob Kane:
"Now you know better. You should trust your daughter, colonel." - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #856

Colonel Jacob Kane is a highly decorated soldier in the United States Army, having been serving for almost all of his adult life. He is extremely well-connected in intelligence circles and respected even in the highest echelons of government, where his advice is often sought. He is also Kate's father, having raised her as a single parent following the death of his wife and Kate's twin-sister. He has always been a generous and loving father, though strict and quick to instill military discipline in his daughter. He is aware of Kate's Batwoman persona and assists her in her operations, often serving to provide her with intel or cutting-edge military technology through back channels.

Non-Lethal Weaponry:
"Hell, aside from the smoke and CS, you've got just about every non-lethal we stock on-base in here." - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #860

Batwoman employs a wide variety of non-lethal weaponry, because sometimes kicking and punching just aren't enough (or would take too much time). Although the exact loadout and composition of this equipment varies widely as she expends them in the field and purchases new items on the black market, they typically range from batons capable of administering an electric shock to a handgun that fires pellets which explode into clouds of incapacitant gas on contact. She also has access to more mundane less-than-lethal equipment such as firearms with rubber bullets, though where's the fun in that?

R. H. Kane Building:
"It wasn't built to be a cage, it's a new frontline in the war on crime." - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #935

The Kane Family owns the R. H. Kane Building along with numerous other properties both in and out of Gotham. As the heiress to the Kane fortune, Kate owns it by extension. A wonderful example of modern architecture with a Sequoia tree growing through the heart of it, Kate resides in the penthouse and also serves as the landlord for the other tenants. As well as her lavishly appointed apartment, the R. H. Kane Building also contains facilities that don't show up on the blueprints. These are secure areas out of which Kate stages her operations as Batwoman. While not as extensive or equipped as the Batcave, she has ample room to store her equipment and uniform as well as somewhere to hide away from the outside world.

Red Knight One:
"Red Knight One. Rev up!" - Batwoman (vol. 2) #3

Red Knight One is a customized Ducati 1098 that has been modified to have a distinctive red, bat-shaped motif. The bike enjoys a top speed just north of 170 miles per hour and handles exceptionally well under Kate's care. She has not installed much in the way of gadgetry, preferring to use it as transportation rather than a weapon or mobile crime lab. She has, however, installed a voice-activated ignition switch.

Utility Belt:
"We could buy every developing nation in the world for what this stuff cost. You're not going to find anything more advanced anywhere else." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #7

No masked vigilante in Gotham would be worth their salt without a utility belt. This wonder of compartment technology fits snugly around Kate's hips while storing almost anything she could have need of. Smoke pellets, small throwing shurikens that Kate likes to call 'thorns', her lockpicking kit, a camera, a first aid kid, a portable crime lab - anything she needs. While she cannot store everything in the belt at once, Kate has learned to predict what she might need for a night's work and give herself the appropriate loadout. Like all bat-utility belts, it has pretty much any gadget or device that Batwoman needs (within reason).

Weaknesses

Batman Rule:
"Batman Rule in effect, Kate. Don't kill her."

"I'm always on the Batman Rule, sir." - Detective Comics (vol. 1) #857

The Bat Family (with some notable, hooded exceptions) would likely not consider this a weakness, but it's something that Kate chafes against. The Batman Rule means no killing, no guns. If she's going to be Batwoman and wears the Symbol of the Bat, Kate's sense of honor dictates that she should abide by this rule. However, she does not have the aversion to this that others may feel. She believes killing should not be the go-to solution, but sometimes it is necessary for the good of the many. Likewise, in her eyes firearms are a tool and not some boogieman to flinch away from. It can be difficult for her to stick with the Batman Rule sometimes, as her soldier's brain insists that doing it her way would be more effective.

Beth:
"Once again, I was too paralyzed - this time by Pyg's mention of Beth - and I let that psycho and his doll army get away ... dammit, Kate." - Batwoman (vol. 3) #2017

Kate's twin sister, Elizabeth, was the person in the world who meant the most to her. She helped Kate decide what to wear in the mornings, kept Kate from fighting too rough, and was the overall sweet and calming influence in her life. Kate believes she saw Beth killed by terrorists when she was a child, and the trauma of losing her sister has scarred her deeply. In truth, Beth survived and was taken away by a cult known as the Many Arms of Death and psychologically tormented. Though Kate is unaware what happened to Beth, if she were to discover that her sister was not only alive but that her father knew she was alive and that she had become deranged and psychotic, it would throw her entire life into disarray.

Control:
"Haunting memories of failure like that always creep up on me when I feel like I'm losing control. That was years ago, but it still feels like yesterday. Stop it, Kate! Get up." - Batwoman (vol. 3) #11

Kate needs to have control. The only time she'll willingly sacrifice it is when she's in a downward spiral, and then she throws everything to the wind and becomes truly unhinged. When she's working, Kate likes to have control of her environment. There's always a sense of chaos when one wears a mask and fights crime, but for Kate it is controlled chaos. She knows the villain is going to try and shoot her or stab her, she knows she's going to break his jaw, she knows he's going to run when it becomes clear that things aren't working out. But when a spanner gets thrown into the works - when someone does something truly unexpected or outside of her control - Kate can lose her grip. She can freeze up, get lost in her own thoughts, or find herself plagued by demons she thought were buried.

Enemies:
"After all I've been through, all the demons I've battled, literal and not, you'd think I deserve a break. I guess karma is a myth." - Batwoman Annual (vol. 2) #2

A part of not killing her enemies mean Kate has a lot of repeat business. Sometimes these are costumed crazies who slip back out of Arkham to torment her, other times they're mobsters with an axe to grind, or just thugs who resent having their tibia broken in two places. For whatever reason, Batwoman has enemies that would like to see her dead or at least severely injured. She needs to always be on her guard, as there is likely always someone out to get her.

Secret Identity:
"Batwoman Assessment, Night 7: Proving my hypothesis is taking longer than expected ... I still haven't verified Batwoman is, in fact, Kate Kane." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #0

Kate has a day job as a hedge fund manager and an 'early evening job' as a socialite. There is likely no one that suspects that she is Batwoman and that the reason for her frequent injuries and late nights are not the result of stumbling home drunk but battles with Gotham's criminal caste. Kate wants to keep it this way, and as such she struggles maintaining the balance between her two identities. If it were revealed that Kate Kane and Batwoman were the same person, it may well spell the end of her career as it's much harder to be a masked vigilante when people know who is under it.

Substance Abuse:
"I can only admit this because I know you'll never hear this recording, but I loved being drunk. I loved being outside my body, not feeling a damn thing and just watching my hands fumble with car keys or a bra strap. I loved pretending that the spins were just a ride at the county fair. I even loved the feeling of cold porcelain against my forehead. I loved that it let me forget about the murders until morning. But most of all, I loved that it gave you a reason to take care of me again." - Batwoman (vol. 2) #0

When Kate is at her low points, she tends to turn towards alcohol. She partakes in large amounts, often not stopping until she's barely able to stand or see straight. Not just alcohol, but other drugs, too. Anything that can take the edge off her pain and make her forget about things. Since becoming Batwoman she's pulled herself out of this pit, and while she still drinks occasionally, she no longer feels the need to get blackout drunk or sample the fine selection of narcotics Gotham's nightlife has to offer. While she may have overcome this, it's a lingering specter that still haunts her and threatens to drag her back down whenever it can.
