Dr. Kent Nelson was an archaeologist specializing in ancient Mesopotamia in 1920. A young man of 18 at the time, Kent and his father stumbled into an ancient zigguraut emplaced thousands of years prior.

It was there that Kent and his father unearthed the ancient sarcophogus of Nabu, dormant for many centuries. Upon being awakened, Nabu evaluated both men, and covertly killed Kent's father with a release of toxic gas. Nabu empowered Kent as an avatar of the Lords of Order, an ancient sect of ideologues from the ranks of the First Gods.

Under Nabu's tutelage, Dr. Nelson developed his sorcerous talents rapidly. With this guidance, he became the Sorcerer Supreme, defender of the Demiurge and humanity.

In 1936, Nelson became aware of the influence of Morgan le Fay with the nascent Harbingers. As the ideologuic avatar of Order, his ability to initiate action was limited; Nabu was mighty but like all ideologues, had limitations to the scope of what he could effect.

However, Fate guided him towards allies who could help. Kent met up with Jay Garrick, Dinah Drake Lance, and Alan Scott. The four of them formed an echelon of masked vigilantes defending America from incursions of Nazi spies and Harbinger Zealots. He and Scott proved a formidable team in particular when confronting Morgana's dark magics and the occultism of the Nazi party.

After the war, Nelson married his longtime girlfriend Inza Cramer. Fully expecting to leave Earth's affairs to mortals, he found himself brought back into the fold in the '60s as the DEO began sequestering magical relics in an attempt to add magic to their portfolio of responsibilities.

In 1981, Inza passed away. Wracked emotionally by her loss, Kent quit his station as Sorcerer Supreme and the mantle was inherited next by Giovanni Zatara. The Helm of Nabu was placed in Kent's sanctum, to be used only in the most dire of emergencies.

As of 2020, Kent is over a century old and sustained largely by a legacy of magical power. He is more than ready to move on to the next life with his beloved Inza, but Fate has decreed that the Helmet of Nabu-- and the title of Fate-- must be passed on before Kent Nelson can be allowed to die.
