The Kree Empire is the government that oversees many worlds settled by the Kree and their descendants. Their Empire is nearly a million years old and has grown to encompass significant portions of the Magellanic Cloud and the Andromeda Galaxy. The seat of government is the planet Hala and their government is administrated by a synthetic intelligence called the Supreme Intelligence.

The Kree Empire is violently militaristic and expansionist. The government is a fascist authoritarian state with little distinction between the military and civil service, and military personnel serve at the highest echelons of government.

The origins of the Kree Empire are well documented. Skrull merchant-explorers came to Hala to investigate if any of the primitives were suitable candidates for trade missions. A contest was proposed between the Kree and the other indigenous life forms, the Cotati. When the Kree lost the contest they massacred the Cotati, killed the Skrulls, and reverse-engineered their technology. In the space of a few centuries they expanded by orders of magnitude. It was not until they ran afoul of Oa that the Kree Empire found their expansion checked; their empire stabilized in its current size approximately 100,000 BCE. Since then expansion has been fitful and largely a product of on-and-off-again skirmishes with Skrulls, the Brood, Xandar, the Kryptonian Hegemony, and periodically the women of Almerac.

On Earth

A covert Kree research team, operating outside the authority of the Great Intelligence, visited Earth approximately 50,000 BCE shortly after the Demiurge was uplifted to sentience. They landed their research vessel, the Omrut Beacon, in Siberia and started experimentation on humans to try and find a way to create new Eternals (due to the effect of one of the Infinity Stones). Their solution was a gaseous admixture called the Terrigen Mists. While on Earth, the Kree became aware of the Demiurge and created a stable duplicate of its neural pathways. The product of their work was the Cosmic Cube.

The Nova Corps of Xandar became aware of their experimentation on the 'lesser' life-forms of humans and lodged formal complaints with the galactic community. Supported by Oa, the Great Intelligence disavowed the teams as being renegades operating outside Kree authority. As the Nova Corps approached, a battle erupted between researchers and military supervisors. The power core was ejected and exploded dozens of miles away, creating the Siberian Exclusion Zone. The Kree vessel survived but the fallout left no living matter for a hundred miles in any direction. With all parties assuming the ship was destroyed, the Omrut Beacon was swallowed by the endless winter. It would be a full century before a caveman named Vandal Arg would stumble on the vessel.
