A major figure in Starling City, known humanitarian Malcolm Merlyn is CEO of Merlyn Global Group. He is charming, gracious and debonair. However, like most people, Malcolm has another side. He is calculating. He is shrewd. He is driven. And he will take whatever steps necessary to get what he wants. The path he walks can lead to some very dark paths. Just don't stand in his way when he sets his sights.

Timeline

Timeline:
*1966 - Malcolm was born to a wealthy family. His father was a collector and made his fortune in antiquities. Though the family did move around somewhat, a residence was maintained in Starling City.

*1985 - Having spent the last couple of years in the Starling City residence, Malcolm takes over the Starling City residence as his primary home on his 18th birthday. Soon after, he meets a philanthropist named Rebecca, falls in love with her and marries her. They soon have their first child, a son.

*1990 - Through Rebecca's philanthropy work, Malcolm meets the Queens. He becomes good friends with Robert.

*1992 - Rebecca is murdered in a mugging in a crime-ridden section of Starling City. Mad with grief, Malcolm grows distant from his son, leaving him with caretakers as Malcolm seeks solace from his sorrow. Some time later, with the sorrow corrupting into anger at the world at large for allowing an innocent such as Rebecca to be killed, Malcolm finds the League of Assassins and petitions to become a member. Malcolm's training as a LoA member begins in earnest.

*1995 - Malcolm fully returns to Starling City. With newfound purpose, coupled by strength of will acquired via years of training, Malcolm sets out to save Starling City, initially starting by leveraging benefactors to his cause via blackmail, recording their names and illegal activities to coerce them. Using similar tactics coupled with his skills as a master tactician/businessman, Malcolm expands Merlyn Global Group to become a financial powerhouse.

*1997 - In an effort to expand his contacts to further his goals of a better Starling City, Malcolm applies for a VIP membership at the Hellfire Club. The membership is approved and Malcolm comes into more direct contact with people that can not only help him with his plans to improve Starling City, but also to set his sights on a more wide-sweeping change for the world.

*2000 - With the endorsement of Robert Queen, already a member of the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle, Malcolm Merlyn is inducted into the Inner Circle as the Black Knight.

Timeline 2:
*2004 - Realizing that the current leadership of the Inner Circle was inhibiting so much potential for power, coupled with the fact that Malcolm saw Robert Queen as a roadblock for his own plans for Starling City, Malcolm arraigned for Robert's yacht to sink in the south China seas, inadvertently leaving Oliver Queen as the only survivor.

*2008 - Oliver's return to Starling City puts him at odds with Malcolm Merlyn. Indirectly, the public persona of Malcolm Merlyn remains cordial to Oliver, in order to keep an eye upon him. Directly, Malcolm's alter ego of the Dark Archer clashes with the Arrow, always in the shadows and seemingly one step ahead.

*2010 - 2012 - As Oliver evolves and develops his alter ego the Green Arrow, Malcolm shifts to operate in a more background role, less of a hands on approach. This allows Malcolm to refine his public persona, presenting himself in a positive light, while ordering underworld happenings indirectly for his own personal agendas, effectively keeping the two aspects of his existence as separate as possible to avoid implications.

*2013 - After Sebastian Shaw and Lex Luthor are established in their roles of Black King and White King respectively, the pair discover that Merlyn may have been involved in the 'accidental' death of Robert Queen nine years earlier. However, rather than report Merlyn to the authorities (since the connection was tedious at best) the two saw Merlyn as a person with similar interests and drives. As such, they approached Merlyn and offered the position of White Bishop, which Merlyn gladly accepted.

*2014 - 2020 - Through connections both legitimate and illicit, Merlyn Global Group grows steadily to join the ranks of the truly elite. This growth, seen as a more organic development than anything apparently aggressive, establishes Merlyn as a major humanitarian and a magnanimous individual, with comparisons to his fellow Hellfire Club member Lex Luthor. This is all by design, to expand the Hellfire Club's influences and public appearances, all to keep the inner workings a secret.

Personality

Apathetic:
Malcolm Merlyn was once a loving individual. But then his wife was taken from him. In seeking solace from the pain of loss, Malcolm learned to be emotionless. To not feel. This was taught by the League to help him be a better assassin. Malcolm now uses it to help him get past the trifle concerns of human life to do what he feels is the best for the world...which usually is best for him.

Charismatic:
Malcolm certainly knows how to work a room. He is a very charismatic individual, able to use his innate charm to convey his personal views and ideology in a convincing manner. It is one of the ways that he has built his business...and one of the many tools Malcolm has to get what he wants.

Egotistical:
One needs to be a little full of himself if he intends on ruling. Malcolm is no different. He has been stated to have a god complex, to the point where he believes in his own infallibility. It is both a help and a hindrance, as Malcolm has no fear of super-powered individuals, thinking himself to be equal, due to his League training. This helps for facing enemies...but can be unhealthy when attempting to take down those very individuals.

Loving:
While Malcolm may be uncaring to the human race in general, he was a very loving of his wife. Also, that love does carry onward to his children. However, this love may become twisted with his own ambitions as he is not above using his loved ones in order to advance his own personal worldviews.

Shrewd:
To be a successful businessman, one must be calculating. To be a successful assassin, one must know tactics. To be able to be both at the same time takes cunning. It is surprising how the mind of an assassin and the mind of a businessman can be so similar. It takes the same sort of discerning mind to do both.

Powers

Peak of Conditioning:
Malcolm is in excellent physical condition for a man of his age due to his training with the League of Assassins. Malcolm's reflexes are fast enough to catch or deflect an incoming arrow from a skilled archer. While he is certainly showing a bit of his age, he is still in top physical shape, providing an edge to those that would judge him because of it.

Skills

Archery:
Malcolm is a highly skilled archer, due to both his training with the League as well as his own personal efforts, preferring the bow and arrow over all other weapons. Malcolm?s skills with archery place him on the same tier as others such as Hawkeye (both of them) and Green Arrow.

Infiltration:
There is more than one reason that Malcolm was named ?The Magician? within the League of Assassins. Even amongst their order, Malcolm is a consummate master in the art of stealth and infiltration, with his ability to break into buildings and disappear without any evidence of his passing. These skills hold true to Malcolm?s ability to escape, as well. After all, if there is no place that can keep him out, why would there be any place that can hold him in?

Interrogation:
Partly based on his own skills in the corporate world, as well as skills developed with the League of Assassins, Malcolm is extremely skilled with interrogation...and the less-than-pleasant ways to extract a confession. However, Malcolm does tend to prefer using his charisma and diplomacy to gain information, although he isn?t above torture if absolutely necessary.

Manipulation:
Malcolm is talented in the art of deception. This is certainly apparent in not only his sleight of hand skills, but also his dealings with the public at large as well as his successfully hiding his criminal actions. However, once his duplicitous nature is known, this skill will make it difficult for people to ever believe him.

Marksmanship:
Malcolm has honed his skills and aim for not only archery, but also for thrown weapons and firearms. He is just as deadly with a throwing dagger as he is a rifle, though his preferred ranged weapon is the bow and arrow.

Martial Arts:
Malcolm is a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant and martial artist, with at least 20 years of combat experience. Malcolm has gone through the same training that all League members do and was considered one of its finest members. Malcolm's skills are to the level where he can hold his own with some of the best martial artists in the world.

Part of what makes Malcolm a dangerous martial artist is his knowledge in various forms. Among these include escrima (stick fighting), kenjutsu (Japanese sword-fighting), fencing, knife fighting, jujitsu, kung fu, aikido, and various others.

Stage Magician:
Skills developed almost as a lark, Malcolm has since become highly adept in the art of stage magic. This includes sleight-of-hand, escape artistry, and hypnotism. It was Malcolm's skills in these areas that earned him the name "The Magician" by the League of Assassins.

Strong Will:
Due partly to natural talent and partly to training and experience, Malcolm has a very strong will. This equates to an extremely high tolerance for pain. For example, Malcolm is able to handle having boiling water poured on his hand and resist any temptation to alleviate the pain. This threshold for pain makes it difficult to torture him.

Tactics:
An incredibly cunning and intelligent man, Malcolm founded and has managed to run Merlyn Global Group as its CEO very successfully for many years, up to the present day. Due to his tactical mindset, he was able to effectively run the business in absentee while he was abroad and still promote his corporation to one of most well-known businesses in the world. This calculating mind also serves him when plotting efforts of a less humanitarian nature, ensuring that such dastardly plans always have an escape plan, keeping Malcolm almost always ahead in the game.

Toxicology:
Due to League training, Malcolm is very familiar with poisons. He is adept at using them both for offensive purposes as well as to make individuals more pliable for his purposes.

Resources

Compound Bow:
Malcolm uses a customized PSE X-Force Super Short Short Draw LF Compound bow. While it is similar to most bows the League of Shadows uses, Malcolm?s personal bow is modified to fit his particular tastes.

Dark Archer Suit:
As his villain alter-ego of the Dark Archer, Malcolm wears a suit to hide his identity from his victims. It is similar to the suits used by members of the League of Assassins with some minor differences. It is unknown to the public as to what materials the suit is comprised of, but kevlar is one of the main components, to allow to resist small arms fire.

Hunting Arrows:
Malcolm creates and designs his arrows himself. The arrows he uses have arrowheads with three Teflon-coated titanium blades, serrated for splitting bones, and the shaft itself is made of a specialized material stronger than typical carbon fiber. These arrows can be modified with trick arrowheads, such as explosive heads.

Network:
Malcolm has a dense network of resources and connections all over Starling City, and the world in general. It allows him to be able to arrange events and procure items relatively easily, either through his connections via the business world with Merlyn Global, or via his underworld connections developed via his time with the League of Shadows.

Swords:
Malcolm uses a wide variety of swords from different cultures. These swords are part of his personal collection and include such swords as scimitars, japanese katanas, and other assorted bladed weapons.

Weaknesses

Daughter:
As Malcolm?s biological daughter, Thea Queen poses a threat to him. Malcolm may be more susceptible to manipulation should his daughter come to harm. Simply put, Malcolm may take actions that are otherwise contrary to him, all for the sake to protect his daughter, whether she knows it or not.

Human Frailty:
Malcolm is not a meta. There is no special power attributed to him. It is just determination, physical conditioning, and financial wealth that powers him...not some genetic mutation, cosmic radiation, or anything of the like. Therefore, Malcolm has to be careful. He is good at what he does...but he is fragile. As fragile as any normal human is within this super-powered world.

League of Assassins:
As much as they are a resource, the League of Assassins are also a threat to Malcolm. Should the League desires become contrary to Malcolm?s own, the League would have no qualms in re-educating Malcolm in the proper viewpoint...the League?s own.

Secret Identity:
When trying to balance a rather public front with the particular wants and desires only excursions into the criminal underworld can provide, it is necessary to keep secrets. Should the public at large discover that the CEO of Merlyn Global Group is also an assassin and criminal known at the Dark Archer, Malcolm would be ruined. He takes careful steps to keep the two separate...but the fact that he is both is a tool that can be used to pry him, should the need arise.
