Shot by an unknown assailant during a riot and left paralyzed, Dr. Miles Hawkins turned his genius towards a means of restoring his mobility, and to that end created the Mechanically-Augmented Neuro-Transmitter Interaction System. In so doing however, he discovered a calling to fight for those who could not fight for themselves, and as the M.A.N.T.I.S. strikes back against those who would prey on the helpless.

Timeline

Timeline:
*2009: A young genius in the field of biology, Miles Hawkins starts Hawkins Biotechnologies in Gotham City, a research and development company focusing on the creation of new technologies that focus on medical application and improvements in quality of life.
*2010: After a struggling first year, Hawkins enters into a partnership with industrialist Solomon Box who promises a turnaround for Hawkins Biotech. As part of the revamp, Hawkins' college classmate John Stonebrake is also brought on board, providing additional technical expertise for the company.
*2010: A rider in Box's partnership contact allows him disposition rights to any technology developed at Hawkins Biotech. Box uses this rider to sell some of Hawkins' inventions to the military as well as acquire formal contracts with them. Both Hawkins and Stonebrake object to this, however Box convinces them to proceed on this course as the additional funding allows Hawkins Biotech to continue operation, and also with the idea that the nature of their biotechnologies means fewer lives will lost than with use of conventional weaponry.
*2011: A massive tidal wave devestates Gotham City. Hawkins Biotech survives the worst of the damage, but in the ensuing riots and lootings, Miles Hawkins is shot by an unknown assailant. With local hospitals rapidly filling up, John Stonebrake has Hawkins airlifted out of Gotham before the borders are closed, seeking medical help elsewhere.
*2011: Prior to his own evacuation, Solomon Box liquidates his holdings in Hawkins Biotech before stock in the Gotham-based property crashes completely, turning one last profit. Hawkins survives the shooting and subsequent surgery, but is left permanently paralyzed from the waist down.
*2011: Gotham reopens thanks to the efforts of Bruce Wayne. Investigation into the Hawkins shooting begins, but given the difficulties surrounding rebuilding the GCPD infrastructure as well as forensic recovery and the length of time passed since the incident, the outlook is not promising. Hawkins himself begins undergoing physical therapy, and eventually recovers enough of his health to return to a semblance of daily life.
*2012: Hawkins and Stonebreak buy up the outstanding shares of Hawkins Biotech and rebrand as 'Hawkins Technologies, Inc' to reflect a broader area of application, as well as incorporation of Stonebrake's privately-owned technology properties. With Stonebrake and Hawkins as equal partners in the rebranded company, they officially sever ties with the military in order to focus on technological application towards the public good, as opposed to warfare. To make up for the missing funding, HawkinsTech outsources its laboratory space and resoures to local scientific groups and pharmacology companies, further contributing to redevelopment efforts.

Timeline2:
*2012 - 2021: Over the next several years, each man begins work on their own private projects along with their public works. Hawkins begins development of an experimental neural network aimed at restoring his mobility. Stonebrake, recalling the difficulties with transit and rescue in the devestated Gotham, begins work on a personal vehicle with both aerial and underwater capabilities. Hawkins becomes more and more obsessed with his own project, leaving Stonebrake to oversee the day-to-day affairs of HawkinsTech.
*2022: Hawkins incorporates his neural network into an exoskeleton, and an exasperated discussion with his partner leads to realization of Stonebrake's vehicular interface being the final piece of the puzzle. After a night's work, the Mechanically Augmented Neuro-Transmitter Interaction System comes online, allowing Hawkins to take his first steps in nearly ten years.
*2022: An informal field test sees Hawkins stopping a mugging, but nearly kills him as power imbalances threaten to overload his nervous system. Off-duty bike courier Taylor Savage comes to their aid, assisting Stonebrake with getting Hawkins to safety.
*2022: Savage tracks Stonebrake's van back to HawkinsTech and confronts the duo, proposing a continuance of stopping incidents like the one of the previous night, and offering his assistance. Stonebrake is resistant to the idea but Hawkins, deeply affected by the experience as well as GCPD's inability to make any leeway on his own attack, agrees. Experimental nonlethal ordinance is incorporated into the exoskeleton's design, and Stonebrake's prototype vehicle along with a private staging area are repurposed towards the birth of a new crimefighter in Gotham City.

Personality

Compassionate:
Some may be of the opinion that talent and success can lead to one forgetting about the "little people" as they advance in life, but that has never been the case for Hawkins. To him, the creation of his own technologies company was the strongest expression of using his mind and his talents to help ease the suffering of others, whether by the simplicty of creating jobs for those who needed them, or by spearheading new technologies to use for the benefit of all. This motivation has continued his work as the M.A.N.T.I.S., allowing him to lend his aid directly to those who need it most.

Intelligent:
Once known as a young prodigy in terms of intellect, Miles Hawkins was able to graduate from university and earn a doctorate at a far younger age than others in his field. This intellect applies not only to academic learning, but also towards deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, and innovation, as these skills are what has allowed him to stay at the forefront of heading his own technologies company.

No Faith In System:
While Hawkins carries a genuine belief in working for the good of people, his experiences in life have colored his willingness to believe in the institutions created by those people. Greedy corporate heads, the inability of police to protect the public, and his own personal experiences with both, have left their mark. Hawkins' ability to understand the factors behind such things -- such as desperation or lack of resources, rather than inherent malace or ineptitude -- has not lessened his distrust towards these institutions' ability to achieve the goals they claim. This distrust is what inspired him to create his own company, and eventually pursue his crimefighting activities as well.

Personable:
While most laboratory workers are not suited to public relations, necessity as much as desire has allowed Miles Hawkins to cultivate skill in such. From presenting the thesis for his doctorate to announcing his company to the public, Hawkins has found the need to convey ideas in an appealing manner as a necessity, and to be receptive to crticism in order to hone his understanding of subjects he feels strongly about. As such, even when strongly disagreeing with the ideals or methods of others, Hawkins does his best to remain engaging and communicative, encouraging an open flow of dialogue.

Recovering Embittered:
Although Miles Hawkins would never have considered himself a bright-eyed idealist, his willingless to help those in need stemmed from the idea that people were worth helping, an idea he kept to with eagerness at first. The various drastic events in his life have tarnished that idealism however, and for a long period left him with a deep bitterness regarding his personal sitatuation and the misuse of his company. With the creation of Hawkins Technologies and the recovery of his mobility through use of his exoskeleton, Hawkins is beginning to recover some of the positive outlook of his early days. The scars left by dark days and dark thoughts are not easily healed however, and there are still times when Hawkins will find himself falling back towards cynisicm in regards to others.

Resolute:
Even before his shooting, Miles Hawkins was a person of considerable will, seeing himself through years of schooling, study, and development in matters of both science and business. With the loss of his mobility, that will was turned towards regaining control of his life, and eventually lead to the creation of the M.A.N.T.I.S. itself. Although his associates may simply regard this as stubborness, for Hawkins it is a driving force that sees him through to his goals regardless of the adversities he faces.

Athletics:
A sound mind is diminished without a sound body to carry it. Prior to his shooting, Hawkins maintained a regimen of regular exercise as well as recreational athletics, with basketball being his favorite. After his shooting, that energy was turned towards physical therapy and reconditioning himself for life as a paraplegic, with emphasis placed on upper-body strength training. In this regard he carries an above-average leverage of ability, which has helped him transition back to full mobility with a minimum of effort while wearing his exoskeleton.

Invention:
While the world of full of scientists and academics, the ability to turn concepts into concerete products and applications is a different set of skills entirely. Although not as technically skilled as his partner John Stonebrake, Hawkins is familiar with the process of turning scientific concepts towards practical application, and the particulars of the various fabrication and testing stages. This is most evident in his creation of the neural network that is the core of the M.A.N.T.I.S. exoskeleton, whose inception and creation over the course of several years was one solely of his own effort.

Sciences:
Although biology is Hawkins' strongest forte, his research into humanitarian technologies has expanded into other related fields as well. As such, while Hawkins has a doctorate level of knowledge in biology, he also possesses an expert level of knowledge in the fields of biochemistry and biotechnology, and an above-average level of expertise in pharmacology and marine pharmacology.

Chrysalid:
In witnessing the disaster left in the wake of the Gotham tsunami, John Stonebrake took particular notice of the difficulty rescue vehicles had in reaching and evacuating victims due to the broken terrain. He began work on an experimental vehicle capable of aerial transport, but also carrying underwater capability for cases where local airspace would be too crowded for access. Code-named "Chrysalid" as the first stage of something better to come, the vehicle has become one of the key tools of the M.A.N.T.I.S.' operations.
The Chrystalid is a wheeless two-person vehicle capable of seamless transition between flight, hover, and underwater transport modes. The front half carries the form factor of a concept car, with the back half branching into a pair of contoured nacelles connected by a spoiler arch. A steering yoke on the driver's side, combined with a limited neural interface in the M.A.N.T.I.S.' headset, allows Hawkins to operate the vehicle efficiently without being formally trained in flight. The vehicle is a working prototype that has yet to reach the stress-testing phase, and as such its top speed has yet to be charted. As it was intended for civilian use and not miliitary however, it is not capable of supersonic flight.
Very much an experimental vehicle, the cockpit of the Chrysalid only carries basic pilot controls, with the bulk of its operations -- such as systems management and radar support -- being handled via secure data link to the Seapod. The pilot also has the option to turn flight control over to the Seapod completely for remote operation, allowing himself freedom of action while the Seapod's operator keeps the vehicle in the air.
The nature of the Chrysalid's interface with the exoskeleton also allows it a limited induction charging ability, allowing the Seapod's operator to restore and stabilize power to the exoskeleton in the event of a power drain or imbalance.
As several stages of the Chrysalid's development are a matter of public record, on paper the project has been scrapped due to unresolvable issues with the pilot interface. In reality, the Chrysalid was secretly moved from the Hawkins Technology testing area to the Seapod undersea facility, where it remains when not in operation.

Comms Monitoring:
Development of the Chrysalid required John Stonebrake to gain familiarity with the practical applications of flight-testing an experimental aircraft, such as gaining airspace clearance for testing and the use of air traffic maps, and satellite access for GPS tracking. Combinining his familiarity with some homemade security and anonymity software, Stonebrake is able to gain limited access to communications satellites for the Gotham area, whose information can be relayed to Hawkins in the course of his work as the M.A.N.T.I.S. This includes the local communications used by the Gotham City Police department, with Stonebrake able to pick up on them in the same manner as a police scanner.

Descender:
One of John Stonebrake's side projects, the "personal ascension/descension device" was created after seeing the efforts of rescue and relief workers navigating Gotham's broken landscape in the wake of the tsunami. Essentially a motorized winch and rappel line housed within a squarish grip, it's capable of swiftly lowering or raising the weight of a full-grown body while being operated with one hand, and was added to the M.A.N.T.I.S.' arsenal as a means to quickly enter or leave an area.
Because there is no firing mechanism it is not a proper launcher, and requires a fixed anchor point to operate, usually an overhead structure or a brace inside the Chrysalid. A remote function toggled through the exoskeleton's headset can allow the device to retract up out of the way after being deployed, and lower back down when needed.

Exoskeleton:
The core of Hawkins' crimefighting technologies and his crowning achievement as an inventor, the Mechanically Augmented Neuro-Transmitter Interaction System is a neural network incoporated into an exoskeletal frame, headset, and bodysuit. When activated, signals are transmitted from the brain throughout the rest of the body via the exoskeleton, bypassing the damaged section of Hawkins' spine. This allows him full mobility for as long as the exoskeleton is active. Still very much an experimental technology, the maximum operating time has yet to be determined due to various limiting factors, such as power imbalances creating stress on the user's nervous system. In general, it is not capable of operating for more than two or three hours at a time, potentialy less the more the user exerts themselves.
A side effect of the exoskeleton's operations is the boosting of the wearer's physical abilities above normal levels while in operation. The upper limits are difficult to chart due to the aforementioned stress factors, with the potential for permanent damage if pressed. In the course of regular use however, Hawkins has demonstrated enough strength to lift and hurl a full-grown man, to jump a 30-plus-foot gap, and enough reflexive ability to match a martial artist's pace in hand-to-hand combat without formal training of his own.
The headset of the exoskeleton is a repurposed navigational aid, and carrries low-light vision capabilities as well as a heads-up display with targeting reticle. The headset itself does not have a voice distortion function, but due to a unique interaction between the exoskeleton's signal-transmitting abilities and the user's vocal cords, a bass distortion effect occurs whenever the system is active.
The bodysuit's weave has demonstrated itself able to withstand the impact from a rifle bullet, protecting the user from small- to mid-grade arms fire. As it is not battlefield-grade technology however, impacts run the risk of affecting the exoskeleton's functionality, reducing or disrupting its power distribution, and even moreso if the exoskeletal components themselves are struck.

Finances:
Born into a moderately wealthy family, Miles Hawkins was able to expand on his personal fortune with a combination of sound investment, government incentives, and contracts. The bulk of his finances has gone back into the formation of his own company, but enough has remained to allow him his own seafront residence, as well as some items of personal luxury. Financially speaking, Hawkins can be regarded as being at the entry level of Gotham's upper class, faring better than a middle class family but without enough disposable income to be considered truly wealthy.

Hawkins Technologies:
Expanded from the original Hawkins Biotech building in the wake of the Gotham tsunami, the Hawkins Technologies building is a multi-story complex, fully staffed with administrative and technical personnel and guardid via gated access requiring an ID batch. Within its span are several laboratory and office spaces, accounting for several projects at once in any given time. Various areas of the building are restricted for secure access due to the sensitive or potentially hazardous nature of some of the projects. The access point to the Seapod facility is also within one of the restricted areas.
On the record, Hawkins Technologies is a completely legitimate enterprise promoting the expansion of various technologies and outsourcing its laboratory space to various scientific and medical agencies. Off the record, the various technological resoures required to operate as the M.A.N.T.I.S. can be appropriated and written off from the company's technology stores, usually as private research projects of varying success. Use of company vans with portable scientific equipment have also been lent towards this cause on occasion.

John Stonebrake:
A classmate from Hawkins' college days, John Stonebrake had journeyed from England to America in the course of his academia, with further studies in Japan and Metropolis before eventually being scouted by Hawkins, thus settling in Gotham. An expert in physics and engineering as well as software coding, Stonebrake oversees most of the projects at Hawkins Technologies, with the prototype flying vehicle "Chrysalid" being his crowning achievement.
Stonebrake also assists with the technical aspects of the M.A.N.T.I.S.' crimefighting activities, helping with maintenance and repair and creating specialty devices as the situation demands. His main role is to function as operator while Hawkins is in the field, helping to monitor and adjust the exoskeleton's power levels as well as provide remote support via encrypted voice communication.

Paralyzing Darts:
When the decision was made to take an active role in crimefighting, the question arose as to what arsenal the M.A.N.T.I.S. should bring to bear against those who sought to do harm. With Hawkins voicing a distinct dislike of guns thanks to the role one played in his loss of mobility, the decision was made to use an experimental anti-personnel device intended for non-lethal riot control: a series of cartridge-loaded needle darts, aimed using the headset's targeting display and fired from twin launchers mounted on the backs of the exoskeleton's wrists.
When fired, the darts inject a short-term nerve-deadening agent into the target's body on impact, spreading it through subcutaneous injection. At the same time, electronics inside the cartridge's housing emit an electrical pulse that specifically targets the synaptic responses governing voluntary movement, disrupting them. The combation of the two create a near-instant paralysis in its target, freezing them into a mannequin-like state. The duration varies according to the target's biological factors, but averages at roughly an hour; in cases where the targets have altered or unique biochemistry, the darts may prove less effective, or potentially not effective at all.
The nerve agent is an experimental local anesthetic that had passed Hawkins Technologies' safe testing phase but had yet to be submitted for formal consideration, and therefore the formula is not on public record; the electrical pulse also has the side-effect of destroying the components within the cartridge. As a result, the darts are almost impossible to trace back to Hawkins Technologies once fired.

Residence:
Hawkins owns a modestly-sized personal residence on the Gotham seafront. Though he had been content to live alone, the cirucmstances of his shooting has forced him to make changes such as remodeling much of it for limited mobility access, as well as making use of a housekeeping service (though none of them know of his secret identity).
Though decorated with various personal effects speaking to his overseas studies, the only feature of note is a hidden elevator system which connects to the Seapod. This actually was not created with the M.A.N.T.I.S. in mind, but with idea of ease of transit between his residence and the undersea lab, given his residence was already close to the waterfront. As with the entrance from Hawkins Technologies, the elevator can only be accessed with a combination of palmprint scan and voice match, although access can be granted from the Seapod as well.

Seapod:
Having objected to Solomon Box's contracting of Hawkins Biotechnology for military use, Miles Hawkins had begun steps to move his company away from biotechnology towards marine pharmacology, in a bit to break ties with the military to focus solely on medicine and environmental study. Towards that end he had an underwater facility built as an offshoot of the main laboratory building, with construction completed on the day the Gotham tsunami hit. With priorities shifting in the wake of the recovery and reclamation efforts, the facility remained undamaged and mostly forgotten, until the day came when it was realized the M.A.N.T.I.S. would need a base of operations for his work.
Dubbed "Seapod," there are only two access points to the underwater facility via secure elevators: within a restricted area of the Hawkins Technologies building, and Miles Hawkins' own home. Palmprint scan and voice match are required to gain access to either, although access can be granted from the inside as well. Meant to be both a fully-functioning laboratory and a long-term marine observation post, its span incorporates a modest living space as well as office and research spaces. A series of computers are linked to the Hawkins Technologies mainframe and various communication networks, and repair and maintenance resources for the M.A.N.T.I.S.' technologies are kept here along with a storage space for the exoskeleton itself. The Chrysalid is also housed here when not in operation, with an undersea exit tunnel providing access to the bay.

Situational Tech:
On its own the M.A.N.T.I.S. can be a formidable force, but realistically speaking there will be situations that neither Hawkins nor his allies will be able to anticipate in full. The limitations of the exoskeleton itself also prevent a large onboard loadout, as the bulk of its power supply is directed to the necessary systems that allow Hawkins his mobility. As a result, occasions will arise where specialty utility devices -- such as personal trackers or listening devices -- will need to be assembled on the fly. Fortunately, HawkinsTech has a sufficient store of parts allocated to side projects that pieces can be appropriated for most specialty needs as they arise.

Taylor Savage:
A Gotham native, Taylor Savage (no relation to Vandal) works as a bicycle courier, and initially encountered Hawkins and Stonebrake during their first outing with the M.A.N.T.I.S. exoskeleton, witnessing their stopping a mugging and assisting an overtaxed Hawkins with safetly getting back to their van. Later, he would use his connections to track the van's license plate back to Hawkins Technologies where he would confront the duo, seeing their potential to do good in a troubled neighborhood and volunteering his services in being part of it.
Savage is Hawkins and Stonebrake's street-level contact, not only having lived all his life in Gotham, but becoming familiar with various parts of it in the course of his work both before and after the tsunami, with his company providing support during a time when most electronic communications were down. Trading favors with his co-workers allows Savage to acquire news about most of the goings-on in the greater Gotham area, which he can then relay back to Hawkins and Stonebrake.
Savage can also act as a backup pilot for the Chrysalid's remote flight function, as Stonebrake had designed a simple analog control system for ease of use, something that Savage -- also an enthusiastic gamer -- has demonstrated a surprising level of skill with.

Weaknesses

Amateur:
Despite the combination of technical skills, genius, and streetwise smarts that the trio of Hawkins, Stonebrake, and Savage bring to their operation, the fact remains that these are scientists and everyday people who are turning their efforts towards crimefighting with no prior experience. A number of factors have allowed them to continue uninterrupted thus far, such as a bodysuit that hides fingerprints and features, experimental technology that cannot be traced, and a verifiable medical condition that prevents most people from associating the paraplegic Hawkins with the strong and agile M.A.N.T.I.S. Mistakes will inevitably be made however, and as their activities persist and more attention is drawn towards them, they have the potential to become costy ones.

Misappropriated Tech:
Although both Hawkins Biotech and Hawkins Technologies have their own security measures, Solomon Box was able to make away with at least one of Hawkins' secure projects before severing his ties with the company. Furthermore, in the chaos and disorder resulting from the Gotahm tsunami, a number of projects and their records were compromised or lost, possibly flat-out stolen by looters or unscrupulous employees. As such, there remains the possiblity that weapons or hazards of Hawkins' own creation may one day return to haunt him, causing harm where the scientist only intended good.

Paraplegic:
In the course of the rioting following the Gotham tsunami disaster, Miles Hawkins was shot in the back from an unknown quarter, damaging a section of his spine and leaving him paralyzed from the waist down, requiring the use of a wheelchair in his daily activities. Although he undergoes regular physical therapy and training, the damage is not repairable by current surgical techniques.

Prep Time:
While some costumed heroes have the luxury of wearing their uniform underneath their clothes, requiring only a convenient closet or phone booth to change and then leap into action, this is not the case for Hawkins. The M.A.N.T.I.S exoskeleton requires regular maintenance, with components and bodysuit kept seperate and then calibrated once assembled and powered. Although a Hawkins Technologies van can provide the equipment to do so away from the Seapod, the fact remains that Hawkins is unable to spring into action on the fly, and often finds himself helpless to affect situations around him if not already suited.

Solomon Box:
A cunning industrialist with hidden criminal dealings, Solomon Box was drawn to Hawkins Biotech for the potential profit in weaponizing Hawkins' inventions, brokering a contract with the military behind Hawkins' and Stonebrake's backs. When the Gotham tsunami struck, Box liquidated his holdings in Hawkins Biotech before fleeing the city, but also fled with stolen samples of an experimental bioweapon taken from the laboratory itself. This allowed Box an entry into the world of black market arms dealing, where a large percentage of his profits are made to this day.
While Box is not aware of Hawkins' dual identity as the M.A.N.T.I.S., he is aware that he has made an enemy of Hawkins, who in turn seeks to oppose Box wherever the opportunity arises. Although Box regards Hawkins as more of an annoyance -- a mere scientist and a bleeding heart -- rather than an actual threat, the cutthroat industrialist remains a potential danger. Box has both the will and the resources to pose a genuine threat to the M.A.N.T.I.S. as time goes on, and the mysterious crimefighter becomes more and more of an inconvenience to Box's enterprise.
