Dr. Raymond Palmer is secretly the superhero called the Atom. Ray is becoming well known as a cutting edge researcher in physics, as the Atom begins to gain ground after defeating several colorful supervillains. The Atom is seeking a position on a team. Ironically Dr. Palmer is already known to several teams for research work.

Timeline

Timeline:
* 1992 - Raymond Palmer born in Ivy Town Connecticut.
* 2010 - Graduates High School and wins a scholarship to Hudson University.
* 2016 - Graduates from Hudson with honros, earing his Masters in Physics. Begins his post-graduate work.
* 2017 - Ray is hired by SHIELD to be part of a team investigating a newly-discovered extra-planetary mineral. Ray jokingly calls it 'white dwarf matter'. Working in secret, he develops an emitter array for the metamaterial that allows him to shrink objects. He discovers that without special preparation, shrunk objects will explode in roughly one hour. Exposing himself to the energy emission triggers a metagene reaction that allows Ray to negate many of the hazards of size-changing.
* 2018 - Ray is awarded his PhD. He works on the white dwarf matter in his spare time. He scales his emitter down into a portable belt device.
* 2018 - Ray is caught in a cave-in with friends and uses his belt to shrink small enough to escape through a small fissure and bring help. He is spurred to further research and continually improves his size-changing technology, creating a portable ray and a functional uniform that allow him to change his size and density at will.
* 2019 - Ray makes his debut as the Atom and soon racks up a bizarre list of local minor league villains: the Bug Eyed Bandit, the Floronic Man and Chronos, the Clock Themed Criminal.
* 2021 - Dr. Palmer joins the faculty of Empire State University. The Atom comes to New York.
* 2021-present - Ray has been mostly working on refining his control of his powers, and refining his costume while fighting crime. He has also been training his hand to hand skills since fisticuffs, regretably, is a part of hero work.

Personality

Action Oriented:
The Atom seeks adventure and opportunities to flex his muscles, in a positive way. He enjoys excitement and a good brawl as well as using his small size to prank the bad guys.

Compassionate:
Ray has a strong streak of empathy. He works well with his students, sensing when they're troubled or struggling. He always will help a person in trouble. His combat style evolved to confuse and subdue with minimal force. As a physicist, Ray knows his to make the best use of the least force.

Curious:
Ray is a scientist at heart. He can't resist a new mystery or exploring some new Micro-world. In spite of his successes against some minor villains he considers himself an explorer and not primarily a crimefighter.

Powers

Density Control:
The Atom can control his density as well as volume, storing mass extra dimensionally. He can access extra mass briefly, raising his strength to class 5 briefly at normal size. (This is fatiguing if done for more than two poses). He can also reduce his mass enough to glide on minute air currents, rising on a thermal from a candle, or just leaping several feet up and letting air resistance slow his fall as though he was a feather. He can reduce his mass to enable gliding even at full size. Drifting over a target, then returning to his full weight to air drop attack them is a favorite stunt.

Finder's Keepers:
Ray can sense the location of any deposit of 'white dwarf matter'. He can determine the rough distance and size of the deposit, up to a few dozen kilometers. This is a passive and instinctual knowledge, like knowing magnetic north. It can be blocked by strong electromagnetic interference or Faraday cages.

Genius:
Dr. Palmer is one of the top minds in the world.

Phasing:
By reaching atomic size, the Atom can work his way through the molecules of an object, like a wall or door. This is very tiring and usually it is easier to gain entry through cracks and other imperfections in a door or hatch.

Shrinking:
This is the basis for all the Atom's other powers and stunts. His default height is 15 centimeters (but he can operate up to 1 centimeter in the larger world). At this height he is fairly stealthy, but still can move about (largely by jumping/gliding). At one centimeter in height it is difficult for the Atom to understand speech or communicate. Mind control requiring verbal commands becomes impossible.

Shrinking to a micron or less, the Atom can enter a human body to perform medical procedures or make truly hurtful attacks: short circuiting nerves, cutting off blood flow or doing a jig on an ear drum or medulla are all possible. At this size only area attacks like an explosion or electrical pulse can target him.

Subatomic size allows the Atom to access the Micro Worlds as well as use his teleport and phasing stunts.

In practice it takes one pose to shrink to each stage, so three poses to o from normal size to subatomic. The Atom can take other actions while he is shrinking. He doesn't merely stand there shrinking.

Singularity Field:
What do you breathe when you're smaller than an oxygen molecule? The Atom automatically creates a singularity field that links him to Earth, and brings shrunken oxygen and nitrogen molecules to him. As an added benefit, below 15 centimeters in height the Atom is invulnerable to gas attacks as the field is attuned to oxygen and nitrogen.

Technology:
Technology- The Atom's powers are all a result of his technology using white dwarf matter (WDM). Ray eventually internalized most of these effects in his uniform. At present, there is no way to separate Ray forcefully from his uniform short of disintegration and reintegration of the exotic matter. Ray had always had a degree of resistance to the physiological effects of shrinking and does not suffer from medical issues as a result.

Teleportation:
By reaching sub atomic size, the Atom can teleport through phone system. Landlines are easy. Cell phones may cause Ray to be disoriented for a few moments or leave him fatigued.

Skills

Acrobatics:
In his small, light form the Atom is adept at gliding on wind currents or making huge leaps. He uses acrobatics and his small size to dodge attacks and set people up for an air drop attack.

Brawling:
The Atom is a midlevel fighter, able to hold his own against a couple of thugs. In his miniature form he can tie up a half dozen men easily and even defeat metahumans.

Engineering:
Ray is competent in building and maintaining his equipment and most physics related lab equipment.

Medicine:
The Atom has a firm grasp of anatomy and microbiology. You never know when you need to enter a human brain or wrestle a paramecium.

Physicist:
Dr. Raymond Palmer is one of the foremost physicists in the world. While he lacks the multi-disciplinary background of a Richards or Pym, he knows a /lot/ about physics, especially the wild cutting edge subatomic stuff. He has seen it with his wn eyes.

Resources

Lab:
Empire State has given Dr. Palmer a fully equipped lab. He has a number of research grants and a salary and manages well.

Uniform:
The Atom's uniform is composed of white star matter and unstable molecules. Together these substances allow it to expand or shrink with Ray. Originally, he controlled these changes with with a dial on his belt. After getting his hands tied by criminals he duplicated the controls in his gloves. The uniform shields Ray further from temporal and spacial effects. Normally the uniform is invisible and intangible at normal size and only becomes visible when Ray shrinks to 15 centimeters. Ray has a size control on his belt and in his gloves.

White Dwarf Matter (Wdm):
Okay it is not really white dwarf star matter. That stuff is only stable under millions of Earth gravities. What ray found was some exotic matter that was extremely dense, A small meteor Ray held in his hand was nearly his weight.

WDM allows the projection of the singularity field that lets Ray shrink and store mass extra dimensionally. It works similar to Pym particles but with more discretion over shunting mass. While Pym particles reduce the space between atoms initially, WSM reduces the size of atoms. The two processes do not stack and actually may be harmful taken together.

Ray has a shrinking beam in his lab and a hand held version. Both produce unstable effects. After an hour inanimate objects tend to explode. No living beings were subjected to the effect for more than one hour.

Weaknesses

Gullible:
Ray is a compassionate soul and basically a sucker for a sob story. He isn't stupid and will quickly spot flaws in such lies. At that point he is far less compassionate.

Shrinkage:
If Ray doesn't set his density controls right, he strength and mass will be reduced corresponding to his new size. In addition at 1 cm he has trouble communicating.

Size Control Belt:
If the belt of his uniform is removed o damaged, the Atom is stuck as his current size and mass. The controls in his gloves require him to wear the belt. Total paralysis will keep him from using his powers.

Work Schedule:
Dr. Palmer is always engaged in cutting edge research and often has trouble finding free time. Unlike some others he does go home at night and eat regularly.
