'Night Boy' from Philadelphia, miraculously cured from his debilitating 'allergy' to light (or was it a hoax?), who is now an engineering student in New York City. Of course, what most people don't know is that there never -was- an allergy, and he is actually the son of the 1940-50s hero 'The Ray', and is himself now 'The Ray' (yeah, he isn't great at naming, apparently). Moving to New York is to get away from his past and start his life over. Besides, maybe he can figure out more how to control his powers while he's at it?

Timeline

Timeline:
2002: Born to Happy (The Ray in the 40s/50s) and Nadine Terrill. Officially died within weeks as nameless Terrill boy. Raised by Thomas Terrill as Raymond 'Ray' Terrill.

2010: Dubbed the 'Night Boy' of Philadelphia by news and social media. Reported with a rare skin condition including fatal allergy to sunlight, without similar albino-like symptoms. Recurring story on local media over the next decade.

2020: Obtained G.E.D. via home schooling. 'Father' dies. News stories in Philadelphia report on various heroic activities, involving a bank robbery foiled by getaway truck being half-melted, and numerous rescues by a 'fast beam of light'. Written off as possibly being Superman or similar. Moved to New York City and enrolled as a freshman at NYU, majoring in Electrical Engineering.

Personality

Catholic:
Ray was homeschooled, partly with the help of Catohlic nuns. Since he almost never was allowed to leave his home, this included quite a bit of religion. While he isn't heavily devout, he does attend church regularly.

Courageous:
Ray grew up on tales of heroes from his 'dad' (really his uncle), likely spurred by the actual adventures of his father. When he realized he had powers -- it took a bit, but he realized that he had to do what he could where he could. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he somewhat-idolizes Superman. It may sometimes take him a second to kick his own butt into gear, but he's not unafraid to actually do the right thing and move towards danger.

Character Sheet

Powers

Energy Senses:
Ray can see certain flows of energy. Examples include the ability to tell direction by sensing the flow of EM energy around the planet, or sensing where something is when hidden by energy-based illusions.

Flight:
Ray has the ability to fly up to the speed of light (in energy form).

Hard Light Constructs:
Similar to how the various Lantern types can create constructs, Ray can also create constructs of hard light. His costume is usually created from a hard light construct around his normal clothing (since normal fabric would otherwise ... not survive). While his costume takes little thought or power, the more complex and intricate a construct is, the more concentration and power it would take to create and maintain it. The limit to this is primarily the amount of ambient or stored energy available and the ability to concentrate.

Light Absorption:
Ray has the ability to absorb light from any natural or artificial light source. The more 'pure' the light (i.e. closer to natural sunlight) the more power he can derive from it. He's able to store a limited amount of energy within his own body for those times when there's no available light.

Light Bending:
Ray has the ability to bend light around himself, rendering him invisible to the naked eye. He can also bend light around other objects to render them invisible. He's able to see things he's made invisible, more by sensing the light bending around the object rather than the light itself.

Light Blasts:
Ray can generate blasts or beams of destructive light energy (lasers) from his hands. He can vary the size and intensity of these for various purposes. This uses more energy than flight, but less concentration or power than light constructs. He can melt through hardened metal and can weld holes closed as well.

Light Form:
Ray has the ability to convert his body into pure light energy. In this form he is immune to most physical, is able to fly up to light speed, and does not need to eat, sleep or breathe. If wounded when he goes into this form, reverting to flesh and blood will effectively 'reset' him.

Skills

Computers:
Homeschooling allows for a lot of time to explore -- especially when you can't leave your house. Ray turned to computers and discovered that he just had a knack for designing both software and tweaking hardware. Customizing computers, in general, is not hard, but he can code in multiple languages and knows a fair amount about circuit design. It's no wonder he went into electrical engineering.

Resources

Family:
Ray knows about his parents, who his dad really was, the fact his mom isn't dead, and the fact that he has an older (younger) brother and cousins. That being said though, he is fairly estranged from the family as a whole, although he's reached out to his mom over the past few months. It's a tenuous connection at best, however.

Weaknesses

Distrustful:
Ray's been lied to his entire life. He was told his mom died. He saw his dad die when he was eighteen. He was told he was deathly allergic to light. None of this was the truth. He knows this now. While he might be willing to accept something at first glance, he's also expecting the other shoe to drop; the rug to be pulled out under his feet -- It'll take some work to actually get his full trust on some things.

Immature:
Ray's eighteen. This kind of goes without saying -- he's prone to being immature sometimes. Okay, more than sometimes. He usually regrets it afterward and reminds himself to grow up, but it doesn't stop him from periodically regressing.

Inexperience:
Ray doesn't have much experience with his powers. He doesn't have the best control over every aspect of his powers, is still learning everything he can do, and may not always think of the best thing to do with them at any given time. He also wasn't exactly trained in their use, and has figured out most of it on his own, with some tips from his father. This will change with time, training and experience.

Light Form:
When in Light Form, he's subject to the same weaknesses that light in general would be. He can be refracted, distorted or disrupted. His general reaction to this is to drop back to normal -- which can lead to its own set of issues.
