Sentinels are humanoid robots specifically designed to combat and detain metahuman threats.

Sentinels are 20' tall and weigh 10 tons. They sport cutting edge armor that is resistant to small arms fire and energy weapons. They are powered with a variant of the Tesla Tokamak Reactor and a proprietary operating system. Sentinels can lift approximately 20 tons and are capable of tearing into armored vehicles with their bare fingers. However, they are relatively slow moving and lacking agility. Rocket systems allow them to accomplish sustained overland flight.

Primary weapons include wide-spectrum energy weapons in their palms and precision lasers in their eyes. Sonic discharge weapons are concealed in the vox box. Prehensile steel cables are stored in their forearms and used to restrain metahumans or electrocute them.

Sentinels sport a complex onboard computer with a proto-sapient VI learning system. Not truly self-aware, they are still extremely intelligent learning machines. They each contain a master list of known registered metahumans and their unique talents and known weaknesses. Sentinels share information with one another and can communicate via shortwave encrypted radio as well as acoustic relay.

So-called "Wild Sentinels" are combat units that are constructed from field-expedient materiel on a titanic scale. They are fully autonomous robots that self-repair with whatever scrap or material is available, and can end up being ten or more stories tall.

History

The first Sentinels were designed by Bolivar Trask in 1990. Clumsy and under-powered, they were inefficient albeit deadly. It took several attempts for Trask to design a more efficient machine, and ultimately required access to proprietary reactor technology owned by Stark Industries.

The Mk III Sentinels were the final iteration activated, and were operational as early as 2007. In 2012, the Sentinels were deployed under DEO authority to suppress and detain violent metahumans.

In 2018, the Sokovian Accords were signed barring the manufacture or employment of Sentinels, following the deaths of many civilians during the Sentinel Uprising. At this time the X-Men destroyed a rogue enclave on a moon of Saturn where an autonomous AI was mass-producing new Sentinel units. Several nations quit the treaty, while others newly added to the United Nations agreed to abide by those terms. The G20 provided universal support for this amendment. Sentinels are now largely barred from formal deployment by NATO members. Those Sentinels still at large are operating unlawfully or have somehow evaded their return/shutdown protocols.
