Sunstone

A sunstone is a naturally-occurring Z-point crystal. One of the densest centers for these crystals was the (now destroyed) planet of Krypton.

Primitive Kryptonians worshipped sunstones, believing these crystals contained the souls of their dead ancestors. They provided a source of near-limitless, abundant energy for Kryptonian society. Kryptonians used sunstones for everything from communications devices to material science to heating and light sources. Not only were they commonplace, but the organic minerals could be encouraged to propagate themselves or replicate nearby matter. Sunstone farming was a common practice for all Kryptonians and they used the stones to create shelters, raw materials, and other useful items.

When Krypton emerged onto the galactic scene, another property was discovered: sunstones could be supercharged by the same energies that fueled Kryptonian mitochondria. With a limitless supply of power from Hyperspace, Kryptonians could carry a sunstone around their neck as a portable fuel source.

Sunstones also made for formidable warships. A single sunstone cruiser could obliterate entire armadas and travel through space with no need for fuel or energy. They were self-repairing and easily adapted to a VI awareness module. Sunstone ships amplified the powers of the Kryptonians aboard, notably turning their potent eye-beams into energy cannons capable of shattering asteroids.

With Kryptonite flooding the upper atmosphere of Krypton, the power of the sunstones dimmed and flickered into nothing. Only a few crystals survived the explosion of Krypton's star.
