Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson is currently making her way through the dojo. She's wielding a pair of twin batons with rubber tips along them. The batons have a core of wood underneath and are meant for training -without- leaving any kind of marks behind. Mary Jane is twirling them rather aggressively, the girl seemingly irritated by something or other.
Richard Stadler Another quick visit, it seemed... he'd been doing a lot of these 'quick visits' lately. Just for a day, just for a few hours. At least hear he wasn't shooting anyone. Just a quick train ride up toward Yonkers into the massive spy base because some general he had dealings with at NMC needed a critical eye on something. Not that he was going to complain; Army still paid for a couple of hours, and he always got steps in when wandering places like this. At least the badge he had was 'genveral access' this time (he was certain that was an oversight), and it wouldn't hurt to...

He paused for a moment, opening the door to the dojo itself, and peeking his head in. He certainly wasn't dressed for the area, the off-the-rack suit, dress shirt, and tie certainly selling more bureacrat than anything else. Worn, polished dress shoes clack aganaist the concrete floor as he steps in, gingerly, whistling lowly to himself. "Pentagon just has a couple of machines. Not a goddamn dojo."
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would take a moment to twirl the batons around over then as she would turn to face the man entering over and give a wave. "Oh, don't be silly. The difference is that the Pentagon puts most of the money into subcontracting and SHIELD puts it into things internally." She would deadpan over at him. "And consultants, I guess. They tend to get paid better though."

She would twirl the two training batons, and then go to put them over on her back. "Agent Watson." Offering a hand.
Richard Stadler Richard moves to step back toward the door apologetically. "Oh, sorry. Was just looking around. Didn't mean to interrupt a sparring session." He said. He reversed course once it seems Mary wasn't the type to be distrubed bt the interupption, moving to grasp her offered hand in his own with two firm pumps. "Dr. Stadler. And I'd say you're right; there's a lot of money swimming around, so I suppose it has to go somewhere. Not that I've been more than a visitor over here. Though I will say SHIELD pays consultants quite well. Really helps pad out the pension."

A pause, as he scans the area with less of a precursory air. "I'll say, though, I can understand it. Headquarters, a lot of combatants, you do need facilities for training. Can't just do a run around a park, I suppose."
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would shake her head, "No, you're not. I haven't found someone to partner up with." She would shake the hand over. "And yes, SHIELD does tend to make sure they have the right people on-hand for things that they need to. And that suit doesn't exactly scream 'upper middle class lifestyle'." She would deadpan over.
"Yeah, things can be.. Chaotic in the field. Just around here.." She would gesture about vaguely. "There's the shooting gallery, the survival training venue, the pool.. Few other areas as well that I'm not cleared to access.."
Richard Stadler Richard Stadler looks down at his suit as he's called out on it. "Hey, I know a place that does okay tailoring, and it's not like I'm trawling through the second hand stores. I got this from one of the higher end departmnet stores." He notes, before clearing his throat slightly. "It was on the clearance rack. Really good price, and who needs to spend a grand on a label, anyway?" He mutters, before taking a step back, and slowly pacing a bit around the room. "Good amenities, though... survival training? Here? They don't just drop you somewhere in Quebec and have you find your way back?" He notes, giving a chuckle aat his own rather bad joke. "Ahh. Sorry. Still, I'm sure you have more clearance than I do in this case. Think they gave me the wrong badge. Though I'm suprised you haven't found a sparring partner yet. Just a bad time of the day?"
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would glance over at Richard, chuckling, "It's fine. The outfit works and more importantly you can afford to replace it. The worst about really expensive things is that you can never get them fixed in time. Those you can just buy a half dozen of and you should be good for a few months." She would shake her head over.

"And Quebec's fairly tame. I think they occasionally do drops in Siberia and the Amazon. Those are more for the specialists. I'm jus ta general field agent. And I just go there late and most folks were alreayd engaged."
Richard Stadler Richard Stadler grimaces when Siberia is mentioned. "Oh, Lord, I don't think they could pay me to go to Russia. No infrastructure, now that's dangerous. At least in Canadaa you don't have to worry too much about internal security." He noted, arms folded. "Though I wouldn't mind the Amazon. Can't say I've been around that area, and it does sound like it'd be an interesting place to see once. Bucket list, you know?" He states, before grimacing again. His suit jacket comes off, flipping it over to check the label. "Yeah, this one... no, this one's one of the better ones. Couldn't afford a dozen of them like this. YOu know how much a teacher makes? I'm just lucky I'm not commuting from Poughkeepsie with the way housing prices are set here."

At the mention of MJ's position, he looks a bit curious, cocking his head. "Now, I didn't know there were many differences in rank here. Oh, well, the standard Directors, Deputy Directors, but I'm not exactly sure how the agents work beyond anything general."
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would shrug, "Well, you can always drop by the Themysciran Embassy. They're pretty open on that. I got to spar with one of them once. I think I sitll have bruises from it and it was like a year ago. She even slowed down to show me how she did it." Mary Jane would go to rise up her shoulder in an exaggerated 'ow' motion. Yes, she knew he meant the river. "Well, it works. And I suppose that commuting is a hell o fit's own. I'd rather take the subway than have to drive everywhere. I can't fathom how people don't go insane when they're stuck in traffic for hours on end every day. Guess LA is outof the question for me."
Richard Stadler "Oh!" He says, shaking his head. "Not... that Amazon. South America, you know? Haven't been that far in country, and I am simply /not/ prepared to go over ot Themyscria. Or fight anyone from there. I'm 47. I feel sometimes it's a fight jogging around the park." He notes, before moving to fold his jacket over his arm. "So really, I'll leave the combatatives to the younger generation. For the most part." He muses. "Well. Maybe not for the most part, but... Lord, I really should stop having minor epihanies at random times. You still looking for a sparring partner?" He asks, looking around the room for some bench to place his jacket on, loosening his tie just a bit. "And the commutes not that bad. Just take the subway down here, a couple of stops. You can even get a nap if it's been a bit of an exhausting day. Note safely, but it's possible. Though I can't say much about LA. Only been to California a few times, and never thaat close to Hollywood."
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would grin, "Oh? You want to be somewhere with -nearly- as many things trying ot kill you as Australia? For a thousand miles in every direction?" She says this with total sincerity that Australia is far, far worse.

It probably -is-.

"LA's not necessarily bad, just.. Congested. Everything takes more time. You spend half your life in the car waiting to go somewhere and get off at a ramp. I can't really believe how anyone goes through it."

She would grin over at Rick, "And yes, I am looking for a sparring partner." Seh would go to offer him the two batons.
Richard Stadler "Honestly, no. I want to exist on a comfortable boat for most of it, absorb the sounds ashore for 15 minutes, then get right back on the boat. That's be preferable. Adventures are for people with little sense and more money for hiking boots." He notes, before his tie is loosened, and he walks over to Mary Jane. "Oh, I'm used to that sort of traffic. Or I've seen it before at least. Ever try the beltway at rush hour? I swear, half the reason to move to New York is you just get on the cross town express and go where you need to go."

The batons are looked at with a bit of confusion. "Oh, ahh.., sorry. Not a lot of experience with those. Is there a..." He says, looking around. "Maybe a staff, of some kind? I feel like that could translate...."
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would nod, "All right." She would go to jog over towards the wall. "There's a variety of things here. Use whatever you're familiar with." There's a wide varietyof various melee weapons. Nothing quite too exotic - all of them wooden and foam, to make sure no one would be crippling anyone with them. The sorts of things Agents did in their spare time.

"Grab whatever you want." She goes out, not having any weapons with her as she would wait for him.
Richard Stadler Richard Stadler turned around briefly, looking over toward the wall itself, frowning a bit. "I don't suppose we could just do the whole 'punching' thing- Ahh." He says, gingerly picking up a foam rubber staff. It wasn't that long, perhaps a quarter staff, but he hefted it a bit, nodding slightly, before gripping it with two hands. "So, just... this is the..." He says to himself, tapping one end. "Tip, and the butt." Tapping the other. "It has been a /while/, but I do have some time; might save me on some cardio-" He notes, turning and seeing that MJ is going barehanded. "Ahh, well, that settles that." He looks a bit sheepish as he takes the staff with him, leaning it close by just in case there was a change in plans. "I'm good with just being traditionaal pugalists if you are. Up to you! Did you want to start?"
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would shrug, "That's fine. Take your time. This is just to get some exercise in. And sure." She would go to move over to grab some gloves. "If you're rusty take some time to warmup." Her tone is gentle. "Stretch a bit and get ready." Mary Jane goes to take a stance that's neutral - something that would be standard to any sort of martial arts style. The quick and basic CQC everyone went through.
Richard Stadler "Oh." Stadler, noted, before jogging off to get a set of gloves himself. "Shows how long it's been." called back, moving to strap the gloves on and... bring one of his arms over his chest, holding it for a goood half minute. "Sorry, that's a rather good suggestion." Another arm, another thirty seconds, a quick move to strech his back forward to the ground. "Right." He said, before falling into a similar stance as Mary, his hands up, leaning slightly forward... his eyes focused on her hands and feet. "I'm feeling a bit reactive today; whenever you'd like?"
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would nod, "All right." She would wait for a few moments to let him finish stretching and gesture for her to come attack. "All right." She goes in for a series of quick jabs over at him, advancing. Her strikes are quick, without much power to them. She's trying to get an idea for how he handles himself when it comes to a spar.
Richard Stadler The first few jabs come toward Rick, and it does seem like he's the type to avoid being hurt in the first place if he can help it. He draws back, arms up to do his best at blocking, wincing once as a jab connects at his stomach. "Gah, never used to that-" He starts, before stopping and pressing forward quickly. Attempting to take the initative with a few harder jabs to keep from being pressed into the wrong position.
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would be driven back over, and go to comment, "YOu're not doing a great job at anticipating where I'm going and you're letting me control where you're defending yourself. You're taking a bit too long to react." That's what the pads are for. She goes back several feet as she has to go defensive as his blows drive her away!
Richard Stadler Richard Stadler gives a tiny shake of his head, before drawing back, giving her some open space to come forwaard again. "Told you I was a bit out of practice aat this sort of thing. Not usually done these sorts of thing for longer than a minute or two. Normally. Besides, it's about sharpening skills, right? Getting some exercise?" He says, his arms up and watching for her next axis of advance.
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would grin, "Well, bit of both. Because CQC happens." Unfortunately often. She goes to circle, and then attacks. This time, she's being more aggressive. Having given him some time to warmup and get a bit smoother. Now her strikes are a bit quicker, even as she tries to draw his guard up and away to go for quick blows to him.
Richard Stadler Stadler grimaces as she presses forward, but this time doesn't give as much ground up. Instead, he moves to evade the blows to her side, and attempt to come at her from another angle. He's not young, but he seems to know where to press to put on some pressure at the attack ot keep her moving. "Yeah. Yeah, it happens. Never as long as this in my opinion. It's a few points of positioning and then someone has their arm out too far and it get's broken. Or they catch a buttstock in the throat. Hard enough and they don't think about fighting."
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would go to let him drive her back over. "Yes, you rarely stay with fists for long. At hte point you've lost your gun, you've lost your belt, you've lost your knife, you've lost your backup gun, you've lost your bludgeon, and you can't get a rock.. Then things really, really suck. And just as much for the other SOB that's in the same state as you are." SHe would deapdan over. He's able to hit her, blunting her attacks on him.
Richard Stadler Richard Stadler grunts slightly, before coming back again. "Press at me a bit harder." He asks. "You're quick, Quicker than I am; use that." He notes, before resetting. He wasn't going to make it /easy/ though. "But fists themselves aren't bad. Just you wouldn't use them long, either. You need to get a disabler in. Early, if you want, and certainly first. Take someone's arm out of it, hobble their leg, and you've got the advantage. First one to hit is often the first one to win. Though it's still a good passtime."
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would nod over and smile, "Well, I know. If I really wanted to take this fight, I'd be going to try and strike the back of your knee. Break or dislocate it. Then go in behind you to try and snap your arm. Break acouple bones and you're neutralized as a threat." They're following the fighting eqiuvalent of Robert's Rules of ORder here after all.
"But since you asked.." Then she's going to counterattack. her attacks quicker - now she's moving to maneuver more. Instead of taking him on straight on as she had, now she's moving to try and flank him, going in if possible from the side!
Richard Stadler Richard Stadler pauses briefly, and seems to be caught a little by suprise with that statement. This is, of course, a very bad time to lose focus, and he's almost yelping as the counterattack starts. It would have been enough to get by him normally, so he's scrambling to get in the right positon to counter. He's certaainly looking as if he'll have some bruises tomorrow, before he's able to find his footing again, this time coming out and pressing into the flank, getting in close with some quick jabs to try and force some distance.

"HOw.. old are you?" He asks, sounding a bit wary. "Not... it's a tough question but you don't look like you've gotten that sort of training yet. Age wise."
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would shake her head, "Twenty. I've been with SHIELD about two years. And this is how we're trained. If you're going to have to fight hand to hand, do it effectively. Even someone armored is often going to have lighter stuff around the joints. If you hit it hard enough it can still buckle and give." He's able to drive her away again with a few hits, decorating her over with some bruises as well.

"Lot of the time it's safer to be in the middle of a lot of Hydra troopers than at range."
Richard Stadler Stadler moves back to reset, but there's a look in his eyes. It's unclear as to what it could mean, but it's a distraction, and it seems he's just noticed how hard he's breathing, the dripping sweat from his forehead, the same that might seek to ruin the dress shirt he still wears. It's a second later that he holds up his hands in surrender, moving to back off from the fight. "Sorry. That... took me by suprise, took my mind out of it, and it's... I'm sorry, I don't think it'll be getting back in the right headspace. Just-" He says, before taking a breath. "Give me a moment." He asks, before moving to sit down at the bench where his jacket is. "Nothing about SHIELD's training, though. That's the right way to do it..." He says, before shakaing his head. "Took me out of it. Don't know why, I'm sorry."
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would shake her head over, "Nothing to apologize for. You all right Sir?" She would inquire. "Why don't we stop here and you can get some water? You can breathe for a few and just rest and I'll get you something cool to drink." Presuming he signals her it's okay, she's going to rapidly get a cold bottled water and a damp cloth and some small fiber snakcs to take on over ot him.
Richard Stadler Richard Stadler grimaces, holding up his hand quickly. "Oh, God, that just makes it worse. No, no, I'm fine, reallly... okay, a little winded, but it's nothing I haven't been before. Granted when I was in my 20s it was a lot furthur along in the process..." He says. nevertheless, when she walks back over, he does take the bottle of water (free bottled water? Who wouldn't!) and uncaps, taking a bit of a swig. "Mental thing, mainly. Lord knows I've seen a lot of dangerous people at 20, but it's... tough. These days. Not sure if it's because you all look younger every year, or..." He says, trailing off, before waving his hand. "Just as well, not even sure I'm allowed in here in the first place."
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would nod and shrug, "I'm sure it's fine, Sir. They have plenty of very, very scary people here that greet people who aren't welcome rather nastily." The still being repaired hole in the upper levels a testament to that from the Svartelf invasion. "So I'd say you're fine. And I think that combat's always taken in the young. That goes very, very far back. For better or ill depending on your perspective. When did you start?"
Richard Stadler "Oh, I'm certain, but there's always room for oversight... that and I think if there's one I have it's enough strings to keep from getting /that/ bad/ of a welcome. But... yeah." He shakes his head. "Shouldn't be. Bit of a crime that we throw money at the poorest of us to go shoot people. I know it's not that simple but it feels like that's it sometimes. And... well, the basic stuff was way back in the 90s? Didn't start getting into the more dangerous stuff until... '04? That's what it felt like, anyway." He doesn't give his age, but with those dates it can't be young.
Mary Jane Watson Mary Jane Watson would nod, "I volunteered in the.. Circumstances that lead to me being recruited. I knew what I was in for." That's being very, very light on the details of circumstances and leaving out a lot, lot of things. "And speaking on it just looking back.. I don't have the perspective you do, seeing things escalate. Just way it always has been." Oh for Millenials. "ANyways, thank you for the spar, Sir. Take care."
