Laura Kinney Laura Kinney, sometimes known as X-23, has not really been around Xavier's much since her sister graduated and moved on to new things. But recently events with Jubilation Lee have made her wonder if perhaps there isn't more she could be doing for her fellow mutants. Something a little more constructive than simply roaming like a lone wolf dealing with situations by herself.

Which is how she comes to be in the school Workout Room. A veritable excess of gym equipment set up to her exacting requirements. Dressed in simple black yoga pants and a matching yoga top.

Has she sought out permission from anyone? Probably not. Will her lessons count towards classes? Not a chance. Thankfully today at least she's seemingly free from any deadly weapons. Aside from those which come as standard. So whoever pays for the schools insurance can at least rest easy....
Yukio Does Yukio need to work out? Not ... not exactly. She keeps herself in pretty good shape, all things considered. She's young, plus she has electricity powers. The calories largely burn themselves. No, she's here because Laura is an excellent fighter, and she's feeling a little rusty in her combat arts. A...test of them to see how far she's fallen behind and how much she'll have to work to catch up.

Likely to Laura's consternation, Yuki arrives in non-standard (to the west) workout attires. She's wearing a white t-shirt with the hem of the sleeves and neck a bright cherry pink. Around her hips are the standard bloomer style bottoms that are ubiquitous in Japan. Her socks go up to her knees and she's not wearing shoes.

She bounces in, beaming ever cheerfully at Laura. "Can this be a Fight Workout? I'm feeling rusty and I know you won't hold back."

She sounds way too cheerful for those words.
Laura Kinney Laura gives a nod of greeting when Yukio arrives. It's hard to say if the outfit confuses her though. Her expression blank at the best of times. And with her fashion sense having recently been challenged. Well who is she to judge what's considered fashionable?

Her eyes flick to some of the equipment she'd set up. To anyone with even a basic knowledge of the equipment it's all things for testing speed, strength, endurance and flexibility. Ideal to gauge where someone's ability levels might be.

When Yukio asks if they can do a fight workout her head turns. For the briefest of moments as if to consider the preparation. And then her arm snaps around suddenly hurling a trio of rubber training kunai.

No warnings, at least not that a typical Human might pick out, just the barest of hints at an incoming attack that a trained eye might become aware of from the subtle shifts in her balance that suggest at a change in stance.

Laura not holding back is it seems. Very unsporting...
Yukio The thing about Yukio that nearly everyone forgets is that she is a fully trained and incredibly deadly fighter. She's been taught to kill since she could walk. She could hold a weapon before she could run. Her whole life before Xaviers was ment to forge her into a weapon. It's only fate, the emergence of her powers, that turned the tide of her life, that let her become what she wanted to be.

Which is heckin' adorable.

Unlike most people, she can read Laura's movements, the little twitches, the flickers of her eye. Yuki is moving in sync with the throw, darting forwards into the trio of training kunai. The first, she ducks, the rubber blade skimming through her hair. The second, she strafes, the blade brushing the sleeve of her t-shirt enough that, were it real, blood would have been drawn. The third, she catches, hand flickering out to grab the handle as it closes.

Grinning, she darts up on Laura, skittering close before she wheels out to the side, pink-tipped hair streaming as she flings the knife back at Laura. Of course it's not going to hit her, which is why Yuki follows it, jumping and throwing a punch!
Laura Kinney Also raised from birth to be a killing machine, Laura probably understands that urge to make yourself into something different. To be who you want to be rather than someone else's weapon better than most. Even if she's done a far worse job of rising above it than Yukio seems to have managed. It's a rare thing to get any sort of an expression out of Laura, especially when she's in the X-23 mindset, but there's a touch of professional respect at the way the younger mutant responds to her attack.

She might even have smiled for a fraction of a second.

Laura springs backwards in response, somersaulting to keep the distance for now, one foot claw springing out with a SNIKT and cutting the kunai in half. While the other traces a gleaming silver arc that'll force that punch to be pulled.

The somersault chains into a series of  backward leaps. Clearly with a destination in mind when she vaults back and up to land on a (admittedly not all that high) high wire. Her hand comes up and she does a little Bruce Lee inspired wave and a shrug of her head that seems to say 'on the ground is too easy'.
Yukio Unlike the reserved Laura, Yukio wears her heart on her sleeve. When she's happy, everyone knows it. When she's sad, everyone knows it. Right now? She's energized. She makes a face as Laura cuts the knife. She wasn't aware -powers- were allowed! She does pull the punch, because she likes her hand where it is. She kicks at the floor with her leading foot, skidding backwards on the mat on her backfoot. Ninjas can backdash, it's in the rules.

Her gaze swings up as Laura jumps on the wire, and she grins, darting forward and leaping upwards to land on it. She makes it seem so easy. Her step is so light. She fans her hands, and sparks start to dance between her fingers. She would prefer a weapon, but this will have to do. She skims across the wire, half sliding towards Laura. One hand flicks forward, loosing annoying, but largely harmless (to Laura anyway) sparks of electricity at her eyes.

Meanwhile, she tries to get into melee range to swing a bodyblow at one of the few -soft- parts of Laura. Where there's no bones. The solar plexus.
Laura Kinney Laura seems just as comfortable on the high wire as anywhere else. Moving back to roughly the middle to give her opponent plenty of room to join her and launch her follow up attacks. She practically bounces up and down. The motion most exaggerated in the middle of the wire. Trying to make it as difficult for Yukio as possible. Not that it seems to phase her. Another mark in her favour.

X-23 doesn't just bounce meekly waiting to be struck though. Once it's clear a fall won't call things short she advances herself. A quick rush of short steps, never losing her footing even for a moment, as she counter-charges. Passing through the sparks without concern. Trusting in her healing ability to allow her to shrug off burns and the occasional zap.

Generally against a skilled opponent kicks are a high risk attack. Powerful but much slower than punches. But when your reactions allow you to cut bullets out of the air it's another matter entirely. Sweeping low strikes chain seamlessly with high kicks. Constantly in motion Laura twists and bends, making clean strikes tough to land.
Yukio Yuki's eyes gleam, she loves the challenge. The exertion. The chance to test her skills against another trained killer in an environment where noone will die. Someone might bleed, though. Probably her, honestly. Yuki can already tell that Laura is, in general, a better fighter than she is. Stronger and tougher, with a healing factor that means she can go for days. Yukio is definitely faster, but this is a war of attrition that Laura will win handily. After all, Yukio's an assassin, trained to end fights before they start. She's still very good, but she can't keep up in the long term.

It doesn't stop her from trying, though.

The kicks come, and Yuki bounces on the wire. She slides backwards, ducking and even leaping over some. She's doing fine, until she gets cheeky. Laura's leg snaps out, and Yuki jumps, landing on the other Mutant's foot in a crouch. She grins, wiggling her fingers, but pays for it when that leg is pulled out from underneath her and Laura's other foot plows her in the ribs.

The ninja goes flying off the wire and hits the mats below. Hard. She even bounces. She groans, shifting up to her hands and knees, breathing heavily as the wind was knocked from her. Adamantium bones -hurt-.

"Urgh...You...you win, Laura," she says as she gets to her feet. "You were going to win anyway, because I can't beat you in a war of attrition." She bows towards the other woman with respect. She's at least gracious in loss.
Laura Kinney As far as mutations go the Healing Factor is prized for a reason. Providing enhancements to just about every physical ability and the ability to recover from just about any injury. Without her powers X-23 would have probably killed herself with her own training regime. Learning to cut bullets from the air is a skill you rarely obtain without getting shot a few times.

Her own fighting style began as that of an assassin. Striking quickly and silently with overwhelming force. But in a world of superpowered threats it pays to have options. The storm of kicks giving her a reach advantage. Up until Yukio tries to land on her. Both fighters skilled enough that it was as much about who made the first mistake as anything else.

"It's been a while since I had a work out like that," she notes with a nod. "Tightrope lines are often made from a steel cable. You probably could have discharged your power into the line without risking the leap."

She leaps down. Landing catlike and rising up, rolling her shoulders. Despite all the leaping and whirling her breathing is steady. Like she's just getting warmed up. "You made a good showing considering you've been focusing on.. a music career I believe?"
Yukio Yukio straightens, smiling slightly. "You're too kind, Laura. I'm ... out of practice, though given what I was raised to do, it wasn't going to work for many reasons." Still, she's smiling brightly, a light sheen of sweat on her forehead. "For many reasons, a single death strike was not in the cards for this. Without that, it's just ... attrition, and you can recover from mistakes much better than I can."

She waves a hand a little bit. "I wouldn't say focusing. Ali is ... humoring me. She's very kind. It's fun, and I like hanging out with her, but I'll never be a star like she is."

She doesn't even really look sad about that, just a little resigned to it. "But that's fine. I'll help her out, be her friend. I think...being famous has to be just about as lonely as being raised only to kill is," she says, looking up at Laura. "I think you know that as well as I do."
Laura Kinney Laura Kinney seems to study Yukio as she gets up. Taking note of how she moves. Signs she's injured herself but is too proud to admit it. She even sniffs the air. More from force of habit than any belief it'll reveal any critical information. There are unlikely to be Purifiers hiding behind the weight lifting equipment after all!

"Kind?" Her eyebrow raises. "Alison. I suspect behaves differently around you than with me." Perhaps this is obvious though. Yukio changed far more dramatically than Laura. Who has yet to shake off her past. Instead turning her training against those who created her. A weapon still but directed by her own sense of justice.

"Your first lesson I think," she starts taking a few steps closer. "Should probably be in attitude. No-one with talent becomes a star without work. And even I fight people who are tougher, faster and stronger than me. If you think you've lost before the fight has started. You are unlikely to achieve any other outcome."
Yukio Yuki shrugs a little. "I don't think she does, Laura. She acts mean and standoffish, but it's to protect herself." She looks at Laura, dark eyes twinking in a mixture of sympathy and amusement. "Kind of like you, I think." Yuki thinks she's a good judge of character, but then again, she could just be wrong.

"You're right, though. Were this real, you would have killed me because I surrendered early. Of course, we both knew this wasn't real, so neither of us were going all out." She reaches out and taps Laura's hand. "I wonder, is Adamantium conductive?" She shrugs. "But I do understand. Thank you for caring enough to ... try and teach me a lesson."
Laura Kinney "I do not think I am mean...." Laura wonders. She pauses for a long moment to look at Yukio. Then frowns. "Although this would explain why my sister no longer introduces me to her romantic partners. I am on a number of international watchlists though. I keep a distance from people for their safety not my own." Said every lone wolf hero & heroine ever.

"I have sworn not to kill anyone. So if it had been a serious fight you would have had an advantage in that respect." She sniffs the air again and blinks. "When I promised to give up killing I did not also include leaving people with long lasting injuries. So instead of fighting to kill you I'd have aimed to leave you incapable of every being a threat again."

The question about the adamantium gets another nod and, when Yukio taps her hand she pops the claws for inspection. "Yes, it's especially unpleasant because the current causes excess heat. It's distracting having your limbs cook from the inside out."
Yukio Yuki shakes her head a bit. "I never said you were mean. You are kind of...aloof, though," she says with a kind smile. "But in here," her hand moves to poke Laura in her chest, top left. "You are kind. You just ...aren't good at expressing it. I wasn't either, until the mission that got me sent here. I was what I was. A killer. A kunoichi. Life was missions and training. Feelings didn't matter." Then she discovered J-Pop and cute things and her powers showed up!

"And I know you heal quickly, but I didn't really want to hurt you, so I didn't...target your limbs with my powers. I can't imagine how much that hurts, and ... I don't like hurting people anymore. I don't want to kill anymore. I want to make people happy." She pauses, frowning. "I don't think I can ever go home."
Laura Kinney Laura Kinney laughs softly. "It's important for me to keep my emotions under control," she admits. "My training is so ingrained I'm constantly thinking of the most efficient way to kill. And the slightest loss in control could cause me to simply..." She gestures with the clawed arm. The razer thin blades retracting with another snikt. It doesn't take any real training to see how the motions, in a different order, could casually result in horrible violence.

"You needn't have worried about it," she notes. "I've been set on fire with a flame thrower. Shot with anti-material rounds. And I once consumed a deadly toxin to beat a man in a battle of wits." It's possible at least one of those is a reference to an Outsiders movie night. Then again. With Laura you never really know. "Home is an idea. Not a place. But if you mean Japan then of course you can go back. With the right fake documentation even I can travel anywhere in the world. But you might have to fight to stay there. And it sounds like you don't want to live that sort of life anymore..."
Yukio Yukio is very familiar with the motions of killing. She, honestly, sees them everywhere. She wasn't conditioned like Laura, but she was taught, and taught well. Even if she doesn't like to use them for that anymore, that knowledge of how fragile human life is will never leave her. She appreciates and hates it all at once.

"They'll want me back, but they can't have me. This place, all of you, are my home now. I'll miss Japan, but I like it -here-." She nods once in finality. Like it's gospel truth. In a way, it is. It's hers.
Laura Kinney Laura Kinney stands still for a long moment. "They always do," she agrees. "If they ever come here for you. Send word. I've evaded SHIELD for years. There isn't a ninja on the planet who'd be able to track you down if I hid you."

Because at the end of the day X-23 has places she keeps secret even from the ones she cares about the most. Lies upon lies. Not even blood thick enough to overrule her paranoia.

"Or stick by Alison. The thing about secret societies and evil corporations. Is they hate operating in the light."
Yukio "If I stay here, they should leave me alone," Yuki says with a shrug. "So I'll stay here. If they come for me? I'll fight." She looks determined. Focused, but happy. "Thank you for sparring with me, Laura. And being ... a friend."

She smiles brightly again, the clouds chased off. "I will stick with Ali. She's a good person, and I'm happy to be her friend. Secrets don't thrive in the light of day."
