River Banks     Summer storms, River has learned, are a weird norm for the Eastern seaboard. The air coming off the mountains to the far west mixes with the Atlantic air, warmer and wetter thanks to the world getting warmer, and the rumbles of thunder and promise of rain in violent, but brief, regularity matched the moods of some of the people she knew.

Today though? The blonde young woman was checking her phone, flipping through profiles of men because that one lady in her apartment building had told her she should be dating, and she was friendly enough that she'd 'think about it'.

"Ugh. Who announces that they have Superman Underoos on their dating profiles?" River asks in a mutter to herelf, beneath the cover of a cheap, navy blue umbrella.

She pushes off the BUS STOP sign she was leaning against, and checks the times, checks her phone, and gives a soft mutter before she turns to step off towards the Subway entrance -- when a scream echoes through the street.

-- and though she'd be the first to say she doesn't suffer from clinical altruism -- she grits her teeth, curses under her breath, and pulls a scarf up from under her shirt to help hide her face as she turns and rushes towards the sound of the scream!
Miguel O'Hara It's certainly a challenge.

"We're 'SLINGING in the rain...we're SLINNGING in the RAIIN..."
Especially since Lyla has discovered Broadway musicals.
"C'MON, Lyla...!"
"Well, I can't help it. It's PERFECT."
"What would be PERFECT would be you scanning the police channels for news of any crimes. It's not like they're going to announce THEMSELVES, Lyla..."

And then the shriek cut through the rainy afternoon.
Lyla said wryly, "...You were saying?"
"STOP SMIRKING and help me find where that came from!"
Caleb Dykstra Now, there are people who are not looking for trouble, either to cause them or stop them. Some people are just caught in the middle of the action, right in ground zero.

Meet Caleb, teen who just happened to be passing by with his kid sister. Meet Sheila, the kid sister, who has moved behind Caleb with a trained mild touch on her shoulder. Both are at just three yards away from the event - a man holding a woman at gunpoint, threatening to shoot her for her purse.

"Crap...", he begins to move back, pushing Sheila away.
River Banks     There is indeed a man nine feet into the alleyway, holding a woman captive for her puse. Skidding up from one side of Caleb there is a blonde woman wearing a grungy blue tank top with a bandana wrapped around her face to hide her identity, brown eyes narrowing as she tries to put herself between the robbery, and Caleb and Shiela.

"Y'all with the lady?" she asks of Caleb, not looking at him as she raises an arm, focusing on the water around them --

And that's when the lady's purse opens up.

Its opening yawns almost comically wide, and with TEETH it attempts to take the guy's wrist off while snarling like a bear on a coccaine high!

"... well, THAT'S new." River mutters under her breath.

And now the robber is screaming for help!
Miguel O'Hara Welp, I guess I'd better get the crook away from th-SHOCK ME RIGID!

Suddenly, apprehension becomes a RESCUE!
Before the Purse Mimic gets a good grip, the mugger is suddenly YANKED upward to the fire escape 30 feet up. The man is summarily webbed to the railing as Cyber-Spider looks at him. "Count yourself LUCKY chiphead!"

He looked back down at the woman. "Never seen a case of Prada Dentata before."
Caleb Dykstra Now, when the lady's purse grows teeth, Caleb just... Freezes in place, watching the scene unfold. Sheila is the one who instinctively reacts, trying to pull away her big brother.

"Laser... Guided... Karma!"

"Caleb... Let's go!"

And that's when he snaps back to reality, and it dawns on him: just what is that apparently gone rogue purse? And that lady, is she in on this? And more importantly, now that the robber is out of range, is that thing gonna gun for whoever's nearest - as in, the Dykstra siblings?

Caleb is not sticking around to find out, so he quickly jumps behind.
River Banks     Yes. Shocked Rigid.

The purse snaps a couple times, in and out, the lady giving another scream -- it may be theonly sound she makes, it's very much the same scream that brought everyone to the alley! The woman's eyes are empty, her expression going from terrified to nonpulsed quite easily as she regards the Dykstras and the woman standing in front of them, and begins her approach!

"Git kids! Ain't a good place to be at!"

And River moves too. She brings her hand up, snapping two icy spikes into place as she looks up.

"Do y'all just hang around the best places, Cyber-Spyder?" she calls out with familiarity, and slings two of the ice spikes forward, trying to ruin the finish on the bag and the woman's dress while playing interrupt for Caleb and Shiela!"
Miguel O'Hara Cyber-Spider drops to the street in front of the Dykstras, giving them a good look at the jagged spider motif across his broad back before his lifts both hands.
"Hungry? I've got a meal for you!"
And with that, he fires two long-duration high-tensile web spreads directly into the mouth of the purse, expanding like cotton candy in the mouth of the predatory purse...
Caleb Dykstra Caleb is not waiting around to see what's happening, here. He pulls back along with Sheila and they both jump behind a car over the hood, almost a la parkour. And behind the car they watch what happens.

"Shouldn't we go help...?", Sheila dares say.

"No!", Caleb replies sternly. "We're not super-heroes!"
River Banks     "He's right, kid -- give yourself a couple years. Like fifty maybe!" the woman calls back to the pair hiding behind the car. Her ice has slowed up the creature, and she's playing defense now as Cyber-Spider is in front of her and the Dykstras.

The purse roars, its mouth opens wider than it should be able to, showing jagged nail-file teeth and it attempts to leap up and come down on Miguel's head, its brand-name insignia sporting an angry eye that turns to look towards the car and the delicate morsals of not-super-heroes -- and its mouth gets filled up with the high tensile web!

It attempts to swallow it down, but it sticks!

It attempts to close its mouth, but it can't!

The lady gives another scream, before it turns and begins running!

"Not today --" River states from behind Cy-Spy, and water comes up from the ground around the weird mimic, and then slams down on top of it.

    And when that happens?

The entire construct splits apart. Dozens of wires and a weird polymer material begins to flex, an antenae sticking up and flickering once before the electric light dies.

"... uh... does... that mean it's some kinna sciency-monster?" Riptide asks, looking over her bandana-covered lower half towards Cyber-Spider, and then back to Caleb and Sheila.

    "Think you're OK now, kids."
Miguel O'Hara Cy-Spi is moving to one side and Riptide layeth the smacketh down on the purse. Right now, he's concerned about the woman wielding the weaponized fashion accessory.

But then both woman and purse are...forcibly deactivated. He blinks, startled, before relaxing.

"Son of a bitmap..." he breathes. He looks at the wreckage, the to River. "Nice work. Where DID they come from, though?"
Caleb Dykstra The kids come out from behind the car after the unfolding scene, and the green-chewer and the awkward owner are decomposed to fibers. "Seriously... What the ffffff....!"

Quiet, Caleb! There are kids here!

"...FFFFFFudge!?"

He nears what is now likely to be a mess of filaments, and gets about as close an observation as he can. "Okay, first a lady and her carnivorous purse, then poof into strings?" He closes his eyes for a second, "This is so above my paygrade..."

Pulling a pen, he touches those filaments, even tries to lift some of them. Maybe get a sample, who knows?
River Banks     "Ah dunno, Cyber-Spider, technology ain't my for-tay." the southern lady states, leaning back on her heel a moment, and then she looks at Caleb, and Sheila, and then back at Miguel in his costume.
"Ah gotta get back to the 'partment fore rent's due anyway. Thanks for the assist, buddy. Couldn't have done it without chu." she gives a smile from beneath her bandana-over-her-mouth, and then turns to start walking back to fetch her umbrella. "You keep an eye on that brother yours, shug. He looks like he's trouble." she comments to Sheila, and then walks off into the gray rain.

The filaments wriggle like possessed spaghetti. The mechanical antena flickers again, and then dies, and the rain picks up heavier to try and wash the remains of the strange construct away.

"Uh... does... that mean I can come down now?" comes a voice from up above. "I'm pretty sure it ate my gun..."
Miguel O'Hara Cyber-Spider looked up at the would-be mugger. "Complain, complain, COMPLAIN. Just be lucky you're headed for a jail cell, instead of getting eaten by a Monster Gavriel."
Caleb Dykstra The teen looks up, and tsks sarcastically. "One less gun in the hands of robbers..." He looks at the two heroes, "Any chances this is the work of someone crazy on gun control?" He looks about, "No?"

He sighs, "Fine. I'll leave the detective work to you, esteemed heroes." He waves, heading out along with Sheila, "See you on the next news."
