River Banks     There had been a call earlier on the police blotters -- citizen had seen an unknown costumed person, jumping from rooftop to rooftop. Didn't look like a Bat -- they thought maybe it was an alien. Had a weird glow around it!

And weirdly the last sighting? Across from a Gotham Banking location. Figure in blue wearing an alien-like mask could be someone new that the other bats could investigate -- or it could be River about to fall off the train.

Meanwhile, it is true. River was out and running rooftops. Enjoying feeling the drizzle on her skin, the wet air in her too-dry lungs. She was wearing a blue leather-like jacket tonight, its hood pulled up over her hair, paintball armor in blue to give her body a different definition, to make her less recognizable.

And t the end of the block, she was up and crouched on an access shed, fingerless gloves soaked through, head tilted back, feeling the rain on her face.
Jason Todd "I didn't know they were shooting a new cover of 'We Don't Need Another Hero'."

Red Hood stands in the shadows, water droplets streaking down his mask and darkening his shoulders. He doesn't move toward her. Perhaps it is more important that his guns are still holstered given her less than positive experiences when he's had them in hand.

"Police report there is an unknown suspect near the 3rd National branch down the block."

He studies her, obviously not seeing any backpack or sack to suggest she actually had done anything 'bad' yet.

"Know anything about that?"
River Banks     "Mister, I ain't no Tina Turner." Riptide states, and she lowers her facemask down, turning to look at Hood. The lenses are all scratched from their last encounter when she was in her work clothes. The mask is actually broken, and held with superglue.

She gives a moment for her heart to stop the freak out mode.

"Mighta seen me, but I ain't up to any bad business. You gave me a chance, intend not to waste your good graces..." she states, but now she's uneasy. She regards Red Hood from her perch on the access shed, and then turns to simply sit comfortably in the water. Of course she's not bothered by a little wetness.

    "Or your friendship."
Jason Todd "That's why it's called a 'cover'" he notes.

"That's good. I didn't think you would. But I'd be careless to not at least check up on you."

Walking over to stands nearer to her. "Though most would be quick to say I lack grace. And I'm confident in saying you should be careful who you claim I'm a friend to. It might lead you into a psych eval for mental stabilitiy." His tone is dry, attempting to joke.
River Banks     "Ooh. Last time I hade one a' those, I got a lollipop at the end. But I mean, I was fourteen an' my step dad *had* jus' been arrested for 'take yer kid to work day'." Riptide replies, little more casual, and then she kicks her boots a moment. "Good to see you regardless. Even if it's in your work clothes." she's a little hurt he thought she'd be stirring up trouble, but shoves it down where the feeling can drown.

"I'll settle for 'not gettin' shot at again' then." she replies, and then she taps her fingers against the courigated metal of the shanty at the top.

    "So. How's your night goin'?"
Jason Todd Red Hood nods. "You'll have to settle for gum." He pulls out a piece of Blam! Pop bubble gum, the sort individually wrapped like a piece of taffy. "And no eval. Sorry to disappoint."

"Glad to know you're doing okay. Riptide." It's a pause before he says the name, as if deciding whether to give legitimacy to her codename. It's better than Red Hood he has to admit.

"I was out in the area. Heard the reports. Thought I'd stop and see how you're doing. It makes me happy to see that you're just enjoying the rain."
River Banks     "Well, it's one of the two things I do enjoy 'bout Gotham City. The rain an' the company." She pauses a moment, and she leans forward, bringing her arms to set her elbows on her knees as she looks down in his direction.

"... does it bother you 'cause that's what I used as a bank robber? Not as catchy as Captain Cold or y'know, The Penguin." she lets that sink in "... but if it's a bother to say it, Ah'm open to suggestions. Long as it's not 'Red' in the title. I'm more a Winter complexion." she jokes, and flicks some water off her hand in Jason's direction.
Jason Todd He doesn't flinch from the water. That's the benefit of having a whole mask with optics rather than eye slits. The droplets strike true then dribble downward and off his armor.

"That doesn't bother me. When I first came back to Gotham and took the name Red Hood I broke just about every law trying to kill the Batman and Joker." That'll be a new bit of knowledge he's just dropped on her.

"You're not the only one that has crime in their past." He shrugs. "I've come to learn that at some point what you did in the past doesn't matter even half as much as what you do in the present or the future. Mistakes happen. Hearts and minds can change. But a choice has to be made and a line drawn that you can point to and say 'That is where I changed'. Even if it's a philosophical line and not something physical."
River Banks     "Ah." River states, and she tilts her head back, feeling rain strike at the mask, dot the lenses that don't do anything fancy like feed her ID information. They protect her eyes. Sometimes.

"... I'd like ta think, if Beau had never come into our lives, Mama an' me woulda been happier. Maybe I coulda been one of them teen heroes you see sometimes on TV -- but Rio woulda never come 'round." she takes a deep breath, and taps her fingers.

"How do you know a change's been made. Maybe I'm just playin' you until you get comfy an' then Ah do somethin' terrible to you."
Jason Todd "Because you would never have let me near Rio if that was true."

Leave it to him to cut through the philosophy to the heart of the matter. The place where her heart matters.

"Being a hero. Teen or adult? It's not easy. It's harder than being a criminal. You could ask Superman. Wonder Woman. They'd tell you that doing the right thing can be difficult. Not because they want to be bad. It's just easier to not to do the whole of the right thing. But they'll also tell you anything worth doing is worth the effort involved. Being able to look yourself in the eye whenever you pass a mirror? That's worth a lot more than any fast money or easy mark that might tempt you."

The Gospel of Red Hood, Chapter 1, verses 1-9..
River Banks     "I was hopin' you'd say 'Like what, Riptide' and I'd crack about stealin' your tires or something... but uh.. yeah, nah. You're right about that." smooth set up River. She was trying to set up a flirt, and he punches right through to philosophy of being a hero, but she gives a nod.

"... find that's been a bit easier lately. So... thank you for that." she replies, and then rolls her fingers, tapping along the roof again.

"Hey, d'you think... maybe... y'know. Might be worth puttin' in time to... I dunno..." she taps her fingers again, and then she changes gears. Her voice comes up in tone as she skips over what she was going to ask and instead goes to: "work with me on bein' more likely to survive a fist fight?"

    Pause.

    "With ninjas?"
Jason Todd Red Hood. Terrible flirter. Add that to his resume.

"Not sure I did anything. You did all the work. But for what it's worth? I think you've done a good job so far. Not that it's easy. But like I said. The best things take the most work."

The tilt of his mask reflects the arch of his brow behind it. Train her to survive a fist fight against ninjas.

"Run into ninjas on the regular these days, do you?"

Considering it, he watches her while waiting for her reply.
River Banks     "No." Riptide admits, and her shoulders droop. "But for some reason it sounded a whole lot less stupid in my head than what I was gonna say." She shakes her head "I got worried about someone breakin' in and not having enough time to get them out. Tried to purchase a gun, but without current New Jersey ID, conceal and carry permit an' there ain't a way to bypass gettin' fingerprints done. I ain't going to always have a ready, *ethical* source of water 'bout. Jus' thought maybe might be useful to add to my repertoire."

Definitely wasn't going to try and inquire as to the possibilities of pursuing more than friendship. That'd be dumb. He's literally the only guy she knows other than her brother.
Jason Todd Considering the answer, Red Hood nods. "Knowing how to defend yourself is a good idea in Gotham." Or anywhere.

"I'll teach you."

It's quiet, affirmative, and it might be a surprise he agreed to quickly.

"Tomorrow night. Meet me on the roof of the old EZ-Stor building on Castille."
River Banks     There's an audable intake of breath from Riptide, like she'd been holding it as Red Hood considered. She lets out her breath, and gives a nod before she comes down to the rooftop from her perch.

"Tomorrow night. EZ-Stor on Castile. I'll be there." River gives a nod, and then glances to her watch.

"I should make my way back home and make sure the squrit's brushed his teeth and gone to bed." she breathes out.

"Always good running into you, Hood."
Jason Todd He nods as she drops down. "2 AM. We'll train for an hour." Then he nods again, "Probably a good idea." He pauses. "Want a ride? Or do you want to keep playing in the rain?"

That rain that has made a myriad of droplets on his mask and darkened the thick leather jacket he wears over his armor.
River Banks     "It'd be more fun if I had someone to play with -- but I think I'm full of water for the moment... an' honest?"

Riptide looks over to Red Hood.

    "I'm gettin' a little cold."
