Owner Pose
River Banks     They had agreed. A Time. A place. Up on top of a storage building. The skies had cleared slightly, though stars didn't shine easily in Gotham City. Dark a city as it was, light pllution did its best to block out that cold blue of space.

There were some things that River missed, living out of city limits. That was one of them. Having to walk ten miles with fifty pounds of groceries wasn't one of them.

She's climbed up the fire escape, lacking some of the nifty gadgets the local vigilante organization had, and was wearing the latest in knock-off gear, brushing her arms off.

She's actually really hoping this isn't going to involve getting shot with taser rounds again.
Jason Todd On the agreed on rooftop, Red Hood is sitting on the corner of a dormant AC unit waiting for River.

When she arrives he looks to her, taking in her choice of attire. He hadn't told her what to wear and there wasn't a test, just some curiosity.

"Riptide." At least he's calling her by her chosen code name. "How're you feeling? Has everything healed up?" It wasn't that long ago she was reasonably injured. For his part, at least his guns are still holstered.
River Banks     "As healed up as Ah kin be." Riptide replies, and she gives an upnod to Hood.

"How's you then Red Hood? Nothin I need to be concerned with?" she questions, feeling the situation out. This was New. It was Strange. The only other person she'd ever trained with liked to belt hands for messing up a lock pick pattern.

"How's this gonna go? Just you wailin' on me until I learn how to put my arms up?"
Jason Todd Red Hood nods, "That's good." He means it.

"Doing alright. No complaints." Walking toward her he stops about two meters away. "No. There's nothing useful to be learned by getting beaten. You already know it hurts before I ever could bother to throw a punch."

"We'll start with you showing me what you already know." He adopts a stance. "Show me what you can do without your powers." he stands there, arms raised for defense. "Don't worry about hurting me. Just focus on your technique" he offers with quiet encouragement.

"When you're ready."
River Banks     She wasn't trained, but she's been in a couple of schoolyard scraps before. And that's exactly how she fights.

She reves up with a punch, telegraphing it like it was a Gotham News announcement stuck across a marquee, and she throws her weight behind it, looking to try and strike at Jason's chest. The biggest, most obvious target. Works fine in a fight in a bar against normal people.
Jason Todd Red Hood watches. He lets her hit him with the first punch. Mostly? Because he wants to see how much power is behind that strike. He nods, "Good." Then, however, he begins blocking her blows without making her look or (hopefully) feel foolish.

"Okay. Weapons down" he jokes lightly. "You've got good power. We need to focus it. Technique needs work. But you can get where you need to be. If you're willing to put in the effort."

"We'll start with footwork. You need a wider stance. Like this.." he moves, placing his feet for her to copy. "From here, you have the stability to defend or attack." He moves slowly through a number of punches, "Watch my feet. My hips" he directs her as he demonstrates how his stance helps affect his other movements. "Make sense?"
River Banks     River drops her gloved hands, and listens to Jason's assessment of her movements, and she gives a nod, looking at her feet, and then re-directs her attention to The Red Hood's hips. No lie. Her attention wanders just a bit, hearing the siren from a police car pass by, but she moves her feet to match his stance. She loosens how her hips were being held, making her center of gravity more stable and less likely to be knocked over with a single punch.

"HEy, if I'm not going to be doing the bad guy thing, the least I can learn to do is not get myself killed doing the not-a-bad-guy thing." she comments back, and she squares her stance better and brings her fists back up.

    "So, more like this then?"
Jason Todd Red Hood nods. "Much better, yes. We'll go through a series of basic motions for you begin practicing through on your own between sessions. It's important to build muscle memory so you can respond instinctively." Eventually. No one because Chuck Norris over night. If only.

"But you're right. Crime isn't going to give you the live you want for yourself or your brother. Not that being a vigilante will, but it is important to know how to defend yourself."

And so the next few hours go..
