Daniel Ketch It has been a few years since some weird gravedigger told Daniel her real mother was Naomi Kale.

Which was true, he managed to track down his birth certificate. But... Naomi Kale? She is a ghost. It has taken Daniel years to find out some bits of info about her. Why? Because the Ghost Rider once or twice has mentioned his name is 'Noble Kale'. So there is something there, something that can give him clues about the 'curse' of the Ghost Rider(s) and how to manage it. Some clues pointed to New England, but...

He had a breakthrough about a year ago, thanks to the vast databanks of the Justice League. A Naomi Kale, from Florida, in some documents. It fit the description and age. In his spare time, Daniel has been tracking down all the Kale's from Florida he has found. All false leads so far. Probably because the Kales are cultists and lived in odd places, with little or no property at their names and like most mystics, minimal paper trail.

Which leads him here, to an apartment rented under the name 'Jennifer Kale', probably from Florida. Probably false lead #120, but who knows? Maybe his incredible bad luck will give him a break. Although chances are high this Kale will either be a psychopath and stab him, or would have moved out 'just last week' leaving no way to contact her.

Daniel is rarely optimistic about anything. But he knocks at the door anyway.
Jennifer Kale "Jes' a minute!" There's some thumping, some muttering, "Ow, goddammit!" A bit more thumping, the sound of someone hopping around on one foot, one last thump, and then...

"Hey, sorry 'bout that, je's ogt off work, found th' shoes jes' in time t' stumble over 'em," Jennifer straightens, pulling a tall, clear heel from where it tangled around her ankle and tossing it aside. She's average height, with long blonde hair that has a little curl to it, blue eyes, and an accent that's unmistakably southern. Currently, she's in a crop top and a pair of low-slung cargo pants.

She offers an easygoing smile towards him, holding a hand out, "Jennifer Kale, what can I do ya for?" Looks like Daniel's streak of bad luck has broken! She's not only still at the apartment, she's home!
Daniel Ketch Daniel blinks slowly at the unexpected friendliness. Clearly not a New Yorker, not that the accent wasn't also a big clue. "Daniel Ketch," he replies automatically, talking the woman's hand for a shake.

"This is going to sound a bit strange," he starts, "I am looking for information on a woman called Naomi Kale, originally from Florida, so... I am searching for her relatives and your name showed up in the data banks."
Jennifer Kale Jennifer flashes a grin, "Nice to meetcha, Daniel," she shakes his hand and steps back to motion him inside. "C'mon in. Anythin' I can getcha?" She'll close the door behind him and move towards the kitchen.

It's a studio, so small, but the kitchen is fully stocked and there's room for a small sofa in front of a small tv hung on the wall. No sign of a bed, so she either has a clever way to hide it, or she hasn't gotten one. But it has good windows, a great view of the city, and a small patio off the back!

"Naomi Kale... yeah, she was my aunt. Didn't know much about her, she took off young.. but she kept to the old ways from what I remember. Dad used t' talk bout her now an' then. She, uh, took off with a family heirloom.. started a family..." Jennifer grabs a bottle of bourbon and pours herself a few fingers, "Y'all drink, or wouldja prefer water?"
Daniel Ketch Daniel pales visibly when Jeniffer says 'my aunt' so casually. It has been a long time following faint trails even with the resources of the Justice League (Dark). "I... yes, I need a drink," he sighs, leaning against the door.

He pauses a few seconds, "Naomi was my mother, I guess we are cousins. I... I never knew her, she gave me up in adoption to friends when I was very young. But I need to know about her."
Jennifer Kale "Bourbon all 'round, then," Jennifer pours out a few fingers for Daniel into another glass, then carries both over to the sofa. She holds one out to him and smiles, "Here, a bit of brace fo yer back." Tipping the glass against his, she takes a swallow and shifts to face him.

Lifting both brows, she gives a nod, "Well Hell! There's a celebration, cousin." Taking another swallow, she gives a nod, "Alright.. well.. uhhhhhh, since yer technically a Kale... I guess.. whatcha need to know? I didn't really know her personally."
Daniel Ketch Daniel shakes his head, "she died almost twenty years ago, I think," as most things about Noemi, he can't confirm anything. The grave in the Cypress Hill Cemetery had no dates. He sips the Bourbon, thoughtful.

How much would Jennifer know about Naomi's life anyway? She seems happily normal. "I would like to talk to someone that knew her. Also, I need to know more about my ancestors. I had some hints they came from New England, but I might be completely wrong."
Jennifer Kale Nodding, Jennifer muses, "I woulda been... six. She mighta swung by once ore twice in that time. Everglades was always home fer us Kale's. Gotta protect th' Nexus an' all. Hell, kinda surprised none of th' cult coulda told ya bout her. We're a pretty big deal amongst 'em." She smiles at him, "Should swing by, see what records we got on her."

Tipping the glass back for a swallow, she glances at him, "She was.. diff'rent. We all are. Kales're a diff'rent breed. She had th' Amulet of Zhered-Na. My side got th' Tome."
Daniel Ketch "The Nexus?" Daniel blinks slowly, letting Jennifer finish her statement. A cult? He is not that surprised, but apparently Jennifer is also mixed in supernatural messes. "I know she was a sorceress," offers Daniel. "Which I guess wouldn't surprise you. I know nothing about a cult or this Zhered. Never been in the Everglades, I grew up in Brooklyn."
Jennifer Kale "Well... yeah. Th' Nexus of All Things? Our family guards it... keep th' balance b'tween good 'n evil?" Jennifer cants her head at him and quirks a smile, "Zhered-Na was a priestess with th' power of prophecy. She got kicked outta Atlantis for foretellin' th' sinkin' of Atlantis. She had a whole gaggle of followers, though... taught them. Her greatest follower was Dakimh, she gifted him with extreme life. Got to meet him once, it were pretty darned cool."

Then she pauses and grins, embarrassed, "Sorry, kinda ramblin', ain't I? Well. Anyways. There's still a buncha us left, spread out across th' world. We should have records of Aunt Naomi... I know she took th' Amulet of Zhered-Na when she left."
Daniel Ketch Daniel gives the blonde a rather blank look. But he mentally notes the names. Zhared-Na, maybe from Atlantis. Book and amulet. Dakimh. Nettie would know about those. "None of those names rings a bell, sorry. My mother was involved in supernatural events involved the Ghost Rider. Maybe more than one Ghost Rider. And probably some kind of curse."
Jennifer Kale "Here, hang on..." She pushes up to her feet and sets the glass on the table, moving towards a small study desk crammed in near the kitchen. She rifles through some of the papers on her desk, pulling out a sheet and heading back over to hand it to him. "Here. Here's the numbers I got for all the cultists of Zhered-Na in the New England area. Be happy to provide introductions. But they should have more information bout Naomi... aaaaaaaaand... this."

Jennifer drops a small medallion on a chain. It's a small 'replica' of the Medallion of Power. What she's calling the Amulet of Zhered-Na. "Everyone in th' family's got one. Think Naomi had th' real thing, though. Or she used hers as a focus, a way t' tie whatever she was doin' to the real thing." Settling back in, she smiles at him, "I guess ya could call me a sorceres... I prefer 'witch' myself. Still waitin' for th' broom, though."
Daniel Ketch Daniel takes the note looking grateful, then peers at the replica and frowns. "I have seen that symbol somewhere, but... I can't remember where." Because it is set on the 'gas tank' of the Ghost Rider motorcycle, and probably it is the power source of the machine when it looks mundane.

"Oh," he blinks, remembering, "this symbol is graved in my motorcycle. I am pretty sure Naomi built it."
Jennifer Kale Jennifer flashes a grin towards Daniel and gives a nod, "Yeah, no problem. We're family, Daniel, gotta look out for one another." She finishes off her bourbon and goes to rinse out the glass, filling it from the tap and carrying it back to the sofa. "Cool! Aunt Naomi sounds like a badass, kinda wish I'da met her... or... remembered it if I did."

Looking back to him, she shrugs, "I can help out with magical stuff, or a family reunion... but uh.. most of my youth was spent in trainin'..."
Daniel Ketch "I... yeah," Daniel is not as trusting as Jennifer, even if they are family. "I am going to need, well, access to the family's tree information. And it might be nice to meet others," he finishes his bourbon himself. Better alcohol than the cheap stuff he usually drinks, and it did help to get through the shock.

"I know a few folks with the magical stuff," he comments, "they tend to be the less friendly shorts, though. Things get bloody and gloomy at that side of the world."
Jennifer Kale "Family tree... well, that's.. hm. Dunno how much of a tree we keep. It's more... th' cult. Lore handed down. Scrolls, tomes, stories..." Jennifer lifts a shrug and offers a lopsided smile. She takes another drink from her glass, then sets it aside, "So. What sorta stories are ya lookin' for?"

She pulls her feet up to sit cross-legged on the couch, facing Daniel and flashing a grin, "Well, I ain't one for doom'n'gloom. Enough of that goin' round in th' normal world. D'ya know what sort of magics Naomi was workin'?"
Daniel Ketch "If I can access the documentation, like birth certificates, that kind of thing," Daniel is not really sure how to proceed, just he knows it is important. He shakes his head about the question on Naomi. "I barely know anything about her," he has to admit, "just a little my step-mother told me before dying, and the Caretaker's hints, which are usually scarce on details, when not cryptic. And that guy is hard to find unless there is some kind of supernatural emergency."
Jennifer Kale "Well.. I mean, birth certificates are usually somethin' people keep for themselves, not that th' family holds onto... but ya could probably order it online," Jennifer pauses briefly, then grins brightly. "Oh! We could ask Granddad! He'd prob'ly have more information than anyone. Might mean a trip down to Florida, he don't really leave th' homestead anymore, but he was her pa, he'd know more'n most. I c'n call 'im, let 'im know we'd be stoppin' in."
Daniel Ketch Daniel is surprised he might have a grandfather. Because that is something that sounds so normal. "Your grandfather is also my grandfather or does he come from the other branch of the family?"

In any case, he should talk with him, he supposes. And with anyone that has known Noemi, even if it was twenty or thirty years ago. Oh... he needs some days off work. His boss is going to kill him.
Jennifer Kale "Nah, Joshua Kale was father to yer ma an' my pa. Makes him both our granddad. We're a big family, though, sure granddad's got lots of siblings. Hell, kinda surprised my parents only had th' two kids. Most Kale's have three or more. Spreads things out better, yannow?" Jennifer flashes a grin at him and lifts a shrug. "Me, I'm still lookin' fer Mr. Don't-Run-Away-From-Magic-Or-Bults."

She nods at him, "So yeah, let me know when'll work, we can head out. I'll get one of the girls t' cover my shifts, tell my boss I gotta take care of a family emergency. He's used to it. Long as I don't leave shifts uncovered."
Daniel Ketch Danny nods at Jennifer's words, and then she mentions work. "Oh, I also have to go to work in a couple hours. But let me give you my cell number," he scribbles it on a blank card. "Definitely will call you soon, I just need to do some research and arrange things so I can go to Florida for a few days, to talk with the rest of the family," which is going to be strange, buuuuut... he has done stranger things. And this is the first time in a year he feels he is advancing his investigation on Noble's origins. He should be more excited, but he suspects he is about to find some dark deeds and darker truths. That is how magic tends to work with him.
Jennifer Kale "Oh! Yeah, sure, no problem," Jennifer grins broadly and gives a nod. Taking the card, she pulls out her cellphone and enters the number under 'Cousin Dan' and saves it, then turns back to him, "Okay! Get yerself set, let me know. I can prob'ly help make th' trip a lil faster if ya don't mind th' magic." Rising up, she sends him a quick text saying 'Hi! Cousin Jennifer!' to his phone. "Fair warnin', Granddad can be kinda intense... but he knows more bout our family than anyone. Well.. cept maybe Dakimh... but he don't really jes' 'show up' anymore."
