Clara Jennings     Somewhere in the dwindling hours of daylight, Clara finds herself in New York. She is dressed smartly in her typical ankle length black dress and one of those poofy, white jackets that helps keep out the chill in the air. She completes her look with a knit stockingcap, complete with one of those almost disgustingly adorable little poofballs at the top.

She is not going anywhere in particular. She clearly has a few hours to kill, and is pausing to admire (?) Star Tower. She has that tourist appearance, with her her head craned back to look waaaaaay up.
Tomie Kawakami Ah, Midtown. Manhattan. The center of the universe, according to some, though the people at the actual center of the universe have probably never heard of it. Depending on who you believe, the gibbering entity that dwells there *definitely* doesn't know about New York City.

But it takes all kinds here, that's for sure, and amongst their number is one Tomie Kawakami.

... actually, several Tomie Kawakamis. But right now, there's *one* trying to do what Tomie's never do: avoid attention. Dressed up in heavy and stylish winter clothes with a hoodie over her face, she still seems to draw the eye. There's just something about her, a twinge of curiousity to most, given the current weather being 'windy, cold as hell, and rainy'.
Minoke Minoke might be even more attention-drawing for two simple reasons. One - Minoke is a young green-skinned woman with pink hair and a glowing 'eye' in the middle of her forehead, perhaps vaguely resembling an entity that attacked Earth recently - the other is that her clothing is... completely inappropriate. She is wearing a gray sundress and simple boots. She is just looking around curiously, her gaze drawn to a jewelry shop as she studies the intricate pieces, then looks at the tower as well - the power coursing through this whole city is dizzying.
Clara Jennings     Clara is, well, not odd in appearance at all. Her oddities are really relegated to boring things like having poor social skills and a job that is demanding with a rather gruff employer. Not really that different from many other girls her age, there.

However, she has this great way of seeing someone so obviously not want to be noticed and notices them. Why would want try to cover their face if not for conversation, right?

She focuses her attention first on Tomie. "Oh! Ummm, sorry, I did not notice you there. Rough weather, huh?" And just as she tries to think of another way to continue this conversation, she catches sight of Minoke. A lady does not stare, but... Clara does anyway.

"Wow, and hello to you as well," she offers to the very unusual woman. A pause for thought. She has now greeted two people in breathless fashion. She has to look through the thousands of social scripts she has memorized, which takes a bit of time.

She dips into a curtsey, based on these, and says, "May name is Clara Jennings. It is a pleasure to meet both of you." A pause to look at Minoke, "Um. Welcome to Terra?" Or is it Gaia? Or Earth? She gets lost trying to recall which is technically the most correct.
Tomie Kawakami There's a squeak from Tomie when Clara addresses her first. See, she was busy staring at Minoke too, and when someone actually speaks to her, her hand flies up to her already-covered-mouth out of instinct to stifle it.

One can feel the dirty look she's giving before her eyes come into focus at all, deep and brown on Clara.

"...yes," she answers after a moment. See, she was busy staring at the profoundly alien person as *well*.

"New York," she says with a sigh, distracted from her original mission.

Whatever that was.
Minoke Minoke blinks as she rises, trying to emulate the curtsy and wobbles, almost falling over. "That is a tricky maneuver," she states softly, tilting her head. "My name is Minoke. And I have heard this world referred to as Earth. I'm not even sure why I'm here - it's a long story. I'm far from home... wherever home is..."
Clara Jennings     "It is New York. The weather can be... a trial."

Clara does not seem all that bothered though. If anything, she is upbeat. She directs her attention to Minoke for a moment. Her head tilts in curiousity. "Oh, yes, we often call it Earth, which is a bit confusing, when you think of it. After all, earth is also the word for soil or dirt. But... that is neither here nor there, is it?" Pause. Breath. "And yes, looking up can make me dizzy, too! But... hmm. Are you lost?"

She meets Tomie's eyes again, then looks down. Eye contact is hard. "There are a lot of really interesting people I have met since coming to the United States," she says. She does have a very clear British accent.
Tomie Kawakami She's still staring at Minoke, Tomie, though she hears Clara's words and it's enough for her to tear her gaze away so briefly from her.

"...yes," she tells her. "A trial. That is a way to put it."

There's something almost halting about the way she's talking, even if her voice is rich and warm. Like she hasn't actually *spoken* in a while. A level of discomfort radiating off her before she gets it under control once more.

"...not lost," she offers, thoughtfully. "Just ..." She trails off, losing the thought.
Minoke Minoke just murmurs, "Sorry... this city is so distracting... I have to turn my sensors down... too much electricity, too much metal... how do people survive in all this cacophony?" she whines, shaking her head. "I... have to adjust myuself..." She shakes her head and finds a subway entrance and flees towards it, going underground. She glances back at Clara and Tomie, waving shyly as she enters the subway tunnel - it's less overstimulating.
Clara Jennings     "Oh. Oh she is gone. Drat."

Clara then is just talking to Tomie. Mentally she starts shuffling through all those scripts again to settle on something better for one-on-one conversation.

"Sorry? I did not hear what you said after 'just'. It can be a bit hard to hear in the weather, and I'm prone to miss things here and there."

She shifts slightly on her feet. Clara is either excited or nervous. Or both. And that is when New York treats her like New York is wont to do. Someone walks right into her, nearly knocking her clear off her feet.

"Watch out! Stupid tourist!" the man calls back over his shoulder, not even breaking stride. He's out of sigh in short order, leaving a shocked Clara behind.
Tomie Kawakami A furtive glance behind her, briefly, as if she's expecting someone to be there any moment and then back as someone knocks Clara off her feet. A brief scowl. That could have been /her/.

But it wasn't, so that makes it not her problem. Still, a distant memory tells her she should do something about the other woman on the ground and she leans forwrd and extends her hand to her to help her to her feet.

"New York," she muses, "Someone will deal with that one soon enough." Her accent becomes more apparent, now, as well. The great melting pot that is New York City takes aliens of all kind, not to mention the occasional eldritch horror.
Clara Jennings     Clara accepts the hand with a smile. "Thank you! That is most kind." She moves a bit out of the main flow of traffic. She is rather short, so getting out of the way is truly for the best. The next person might do worse!

"Oh, and I am sure they just had a bad day. Most people are like that, it seems. They walk around, a kettle boiling, until someone innocent sets off all the pressure. Men lead lives of quiet desperation at times."

She focuses more on Tomie. "Are you new to the area? I live in Gotham, myself. Just moved there in November."
Tomie Kawakami "Please. Men are more often worthless than not... when they're not trash altogether," muses Tomie.

"Don't make excuses for them. You can do better than that." She looks after him, clearly contemplating something before letting the cruel impulse go.

She sags slightly with the tension that it built within her dismissed.

"I move around a lot," she offers after a moment.
Clara Jennings     "Oh, well, I suppose that may be, too. I just.." Clara sighs, looking thoughtful again. The gears are turning. "I would fear to be put to that kind of measure. I have done some things I am not proud of."

But this is not about her!

Instead, she focuses on Tomie again. That is safer. "Oh, so you have lived in many places? Is that related to your job?"
Tomie Kawakami Isn't it, though? Tomie's big eyes are on her, now, like she's the most important person in the whole world to her right in this instant.

"... a number of places. Mostly Japan -- obviously," she says, indicating her accent. "But here too. You can find me all along the east coast."

... it's true, too. She's here, she's there, she's everywhere. Or at least she can be.
Clara Jennings     Clara was about to ask for some clarity on that point. All along the east coast? That is a curious thing to say! But she is interrupted by the onerous of things: a vibration indicative of a phone call or message or... something.

"Drat. I apologize. I am about to be drawn off on some manner of thrilling adventure, no doubt, but it is disappointing to be taken away from conversation that was just about to get interesting!"

Fortunately, Clara has a remedy. She pulls out a business card, which she shields from the rain with care and hands over. It shows her title as 'Lecturer'. The usual contact information is all there.

"I you would like to continue, please send me a message sometime. It was lovely to meet you!"

In a few moments she is off. Not in a rush exactly, but at a reasonable pace. She will not race about the streets in this weather!
