Emma Frost It's not often that Frost Enterprises takes on interns. But, the highly qualified ones are an exception - also Emma's learned throughout the years that the ones that think they can make a difference or make the world better can be milked for every idea they have and then be put to a profit. And be sent along with a strong letter of recommendation as compensation. She normally doesn't handle these sorts of things herself but a recent board meeting on employee morale has her looking to get out and about. Idly pulling thoughts from her personnel going about and making some tweaks to help improve efficiency. So she sits over in a small interview room with a small tablet in front of her, reviewing the resume that had been sent.
Jaime Reyes The resume in front of Emma is not the kind she usually sees. No Ivy-League MBA; no college at all in fact. Just a lot of hard, thankless jobs - burger-slinging, roofing, automotive work... not really the sort of person who walks into Frost International and asks for an internship. The young latino boy sitting on the other side of the table from Emma is putting on a brave face.

He is also doing an excellent job of concealing the fact that there's something else talking to him in his head. Jaime's thoughts are normal. Khaji Da's thoughts are cool, electric blue; a distinct second train of thought in his mind.

"I didn't expect to actually be interviewed by Emma Frost. This is an honor, ma'am." Jaime says, sitting politely; he's dressed up for the occasion, in a neat white shirt and tie, crisp black slacks, black shiny shoes. No suit coat. His hair has been neatly combed back, exposing his somewhat stern face.

"...Before we begin, I know that my resume should get me laughed out of the building; it has at a dozen other places in New York." He clears his throat. "But I think it tells a different story. My family is not rich, Ms. Frost. I know to get to where you are you can't be moved by sob stories... but this isn't a sob story. I have busted my hump every day of my life since I was fifteen years old to contribute to my family and lighten the load at home. That resume is the story of hard work. But as much as I loved roofing with my tios and working in the automotive shop with my dad..." Jaime shrugs. "I wanted to see if I could take what I learned from them and shoot a little higher. He who dares, wins. That's basically why I sent my resume in. It would be cool to work for guys like Tony Stark and Reed Richards--"

"But I specifically asked someone what businessperson in New York could teach me how to *win* at whatever I did. I asked a bunch of people. And they always came back with the same name: Emma Frost. If you want to learn how to win, work for Emma Frost. So that's why I'm here."
Emma Frost Well, now this is interesting. That's part of why Emma has gone to interact personally. Every now and then you find someone that stands out.. Or in the case of the conversation going in, someones. This will make for a far more interesting afternoon than she had been expecting. "Please, Mister Reyes, do relax." Emma says that over in the tone that it was some sort of a trap. To see if he would stay formal or relax at the phrase. An easy way to see how someone responded. A good way to take a quick gauge of character.

"We all start somewhere, Mister Reyes. I understand, even though I haven't shared your experiences." She does a flawless job of lying at this point. But lying comes very easily to a telepath after all. You learn to pass muster with everyone no matter the circumstances. "And that is why you stand out. And those two will teach you how to experiment and tinker, but they will not teach you how to run a business. They have other people do that for them." She would smile over.

"And I am more than happy to help you learn how, Mister Reyes. You've come in with just the right kind of attitude." Flattery wil lget you everywhere.
Jaime Reyes //You're doing very well, Jaime. My analysis of Ms. Frost indicates that she's very interested in you.//

(Great.) Jaime thinks. (I just wish I'd had a chance to nap off this headache from when the Green Goblin dropped that shipping container on me. Tylenol and a cup of coffee is not enough.)

Jaime's shoulders untense slightly at the admonition to relax, but he remains sitting fairly formally; he's taking this interview very seriously. "I come from a family born to the hustle and grind, ma'am. People out there working for their dollars every day in the Texas sun. I will bring that with me. Even though I'm not... being paid. Also, while this may be facetious, you will not *find* a person in New York who makes better, more authentic cafe de olla than I do. My abuela taught me." He clears his throat.

"My family is in El Paso, but I've relocated to Metropolis for right now; I take the train in to New York every day. Right now I'm waiting tables and working as a barista at a coffee shop in the village; if you take me on I can adjust my hours to give Frost International priority."

//Remember Jaime, you have to make time to sleep. While I can reduce the amount of sleep you need, my systems have no ability to compensate if you burn yourself out.//

(Quit fussing, Khaji Da. This woman needs to know I can hustle.)
Emma Frost Oh well, if she does find out who he's affiliated with she'll have to pass along that he thinks too loud and he makes it rather blatant. But, useful to know up front what she's dealing iwth as she files away the conversational monologue. It's still far simpler to keep up with than the Cuckoos after all.

She would smile, "I might take you up on that sometime, Mister Reyes. However, using you for such tasks is against internship rules.. And a waste of your talents." She would settle in and steeple her fingers. "Good, if you're going to be interning here then this will be your first priority. I will make sure to give you a heads up on when I'll have you in here." She might otherwise take the time to mess with him for the sake of being an intern, but the conversation going on in his head was enough to make her go easy on him.

"Now, tell me how you formulate a business model to minimize friction when dealing with different subcontractors in the shipping industry. Frost Industries does a great deal of logistics, which means working with many intermediaries. Agencies, port authorities, different shipping companies.. Which means many, many subcontractors and layers of communication involved. And any single one of them can gum up the works simply out of pettiness."
Jaime Reyes Jaime thinks about that for a moment, casting back over his life and his experiences in order to formulate an answer. "I apologize in advance that I don't have a lot of corporate lingo down." He clears his throat, and then begins to launch into it.

"Okay. So. Every businessperson does things a little differently. They all want different things and even the same things they want, they want them just so. It's like, um." He gestures. "My cousin Diego. He runs a business importing food from Mexico for restaurants in El Paso. But that means he's got to have a working relationship with the FDA, the border guards, the people running the restaurants, the *suppliers* on the other side of the border..."

"The key word there is relationships. It's uh -- quid pro quo. One hand washes the other. He's not breaking any laws but if he can say, help his friend Danny whose brother works in customs get his wife into my tia's hair salon that's booked up six months in advance then that makes it way less likely his stuff's gonna get held up at the border. So I would develop a working relationship with all those parties. Let's be real. I absolutely guarantee you've gotten more than one shipment released from customs because you were able to make a phone call and get somebody tickets to Hamilton. There's nothing wrong with that; it's just the way the world is. Nobody's getting screwed; people are just getting what they want, which makes them more willing to help you get what you need."
Emma Frost Emma Frost would nod over and gesture. "Yes, there are a hundred different spikes, egos, and adjustments that need made. And these need to be done on the fly. If a single bit of the delivery system is off, there's a pile on. You know how major airlines operate out of hubs? this allows for efficiency. But when there is a delay in one, there's a pileover. With everything clustered in one spot, when there are issues they reverberate throughout the system. So we have to make things run as smoothly as possible because if we don't then we fail our jobs."

She would smile on. "Good, a personal touch is necessary. Knowing who to talk wtih, who to cajole, and who you have to intimidate. And also much of it is within the system. The large number of moving parts. Even if you're not familiar with it, this is something you can learn. And then we'll have to see if you sink or swim, Mister Reyes. You'll find whether you have the tolerance to keep up with things. This is not meant as a slight. But it means having to keep an extremely rapid handle on a great many different fields of data, put them together, and rapidly act on them and see how they will spiral down the rest of the system."
Jaime Reyes "Ma'am." Jaime says, "...I come from a massive extended Mexican-American family, which is perpetually at war with itself, and the sides are always shifting. If you said what you just said in Spanish it'd sound an awful lot like my mother talking about the Reyes family Christmas party. Those sort of contentious relationships between people is something I was born to." He clears his throat. "Not to be too stereotypical about it. I come from a very tight family."

"But 'a lot of moving parts'? Yeah. Yeah, I know how that works." He gives a small smile. "So does this mean I've landed the internship?"
Emma Frost Emma Frost would smile, "Yes, Mister Reyes. Make sure you have your identification ready. You'll have your paperwork filled out and you'll be setup in the system and you'll get a security ID on the way out. Expect to be in here Monday at eight am sharp until five pm. You'll be here for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and then we'll see how you're doing and if you're ready to have us expand your schedule. Welcome to Frost Enterprises." Why did it seem like she was saying 'minion' at the end?
Jaime Reyes Jaime stands up, and offers his hand to shake. He beams, which does make his face light up and reveals how handsome he really is - he's going to turn a few heads among the other interns. "You won't regret this ma'am. Naci para el ajetreo." He clears his throat, and says, "I'll see you Monday." In point of fact, he'll be early.

(I did it, Khaji Da! She hired me!)

//Excellent Jaime, I knew you could do it. Your family's going to go ape feces.//

(Ape... never mind.) Jaime gestures. "Well, I'm sure you've got more important stuff to do. I'll see myself out."
Emma Frost Emma Frost would mm-hmm, "Good, Mister Reyes. I likely won't be interacting with you for awhile again, but I'll ensure that whomever you're working with keeps me updated on your progress and I'll follow through on it. Good to have you wtih us." The hand is shaken, and a middle manager appears that will take him through the joy of filling out the paperwork for the internship.
