Candace Hill Its an Early day for Candace Hill. Her last Protest didn't go so well so its not like she was out late last night. Instead she is driving around with her Uber light on. Its not a bad gig. She makes a fair amount of money around the city. Of course that means dealing with other drivers but, she's used to it. Her 2020 Tahoe rolls down the Manhattan streets. Her destination happens to be a Seven Eleven to get a coffee.

As she rolls into the convenience store, she gets notified of a customer. "Guess the coffee will wait." So she turns out and heads off in the direction said customer.

The sun is hanging delightfully in the eastern sky making this a pretty good day for working the gig. Many people are just walking but quite a few prefer to ride. Already she has made some money and she's only been going for about an hour so it all balances out.
Ted Kord Ted Kord is fuming. He stands in corporate casual in front of his building. The fuming is from a suspended Driver's license. He's really considering buying a island somewhere to drive his car open all the way. He doesn't feel like flying or piloting the Bug. He wanted to take a drive to reset his brain and do some more work on wearable tech, which has made several military people look at KordCo.

He might drive anyway and keep it down but someone let the damned shareholders know and they said they were bailing if he had one more ticket, fine or jail time. Bailing would dump a non-trivial amount of stock on the market. He still had 51 percent but people could buy it up, exert leverage and make KordCo a very unhealthy company. So he waits and fumes and this must be his driver.

In a final act of rebellion, he triggers a hidden control and his Blue Beetle costume slides into place. The corporate casual is breakaway. It gets broken and stowed.

The Blue Beetle gets the door, holding his phone up to indicate he is the caller and smiles. "High there, Candace. Don't mind the uniform. I'm a bonafide superhero." He leaves the goggles off and the cowl down.
Candace Hill Patty blinks! She wasn't expecting to be driving a super hero today. Its kinda cool! "Hello. Happy to drive you today. This is a rather unique Job. It didn't give me a destination. Where are we headed?" She asks the Blue Beetle. The girl pulls out into traffic to the usual melody of horns blowing with the occasional shout of profanity. Yup. Its still New York!

"So how are you today?" She asks making a little small talk and being as pleasant as possible. She doesn't pry of course and should he want quiet she is more than happy to put a clamp on it and just drive. "You look familiar. I think I saw you on the news a few times." She smiles and glances in her rearview mirror to the man.
Ted Kord Ted Kord laughs, "Well, I could make your day interesting by saying it's a secret meeting of the Justice League to save the WORLD! It isn't. I needed to get away from my drawing board so I managed to hire you for the day. Spoke to your manager said I wanted someone who was bright and cheerful. But there was no metric for that so I settled on you because you had green eyes. You can drive... uhm... you want to get coffee somewhere? I'll pay. Oh in hero circles I'm the Blue Beetle. Not the kid with the fancy armor though. I'm the older model."
Candace Hill Cadace smiles a little and lets out a laugh. "Well nice to meet you Blue Beetle. Where would you like coffee from? We can hit somewhere snazzy like Starbucks or we can go for the classic Seven Eleven special." She grins. "I have no preference. In fact, I was headed to Seven Eleven to get coffee right before I got the notification of your drive." She smiles again even if she isn't quite seen. "Well I try my best to be bright and cheerful. Usually. If I wouldn't be driving today I'd probably be at Central park drawing stuff. Thats my second job." She comments as she slows to a stop for a stoplight. "Traffic! Am I right?" She laughs and shakes her head.

"As far as hero stuff goes, I know of a few heroes but haven't met any til now. I don't have any special suits or super powers. I'm just a regular girl who does her best to help make the world a better place."
Ted Kord Ted Kordponders for a moment then says, "McDonalds. Drive thru or sit down, up to you. I like showing off the uniform. I mean it isn't up to Iron Man standards but what is? McDonalds coffee wins all the taste surveys. Bean of Doom comes in second but I can't give Dr. Doom the business. Also cheaper than Starbucks. And Starbucks is over priced and they target small businesses to devour. They actually license franchises super cheap in an area to overwhelm local businesses, knowing half the franchises will fail due to over saturation. I try to be ethical. Making the world a better place always benefits you. How do you make the world a better place?"
Candace Hill "McDonalds it is! We can dine in if you like." Candace smiles and changes lanes to make her way to McDonalds. She's driven enough to know where to go for most popular places. "I hear ya about starbucks. I only rarely go there because of how much it costs." She accelerates a little, trying to pass a guy who is taking up the right lane.

How does she make the world a better place... That is a fun question. "Well I do a lot of protesting. Always peaceful. I don't like when things get violent. I also usually have first aid on hand during those protest to help in case things go south." She smiles. "The big protests I attend are for basic rights for like Mutants and other people who are having their rights stripped away. No one deserves that. We all gotta be on the same side in this world right?" She smiles.
Ted Kord Ted Kord says, "I'll send you a copy of my Employee Rights and responsibilities if you like. Basically, your mutation is none of my business unless 1) it will endanger you or others (no incendiary powers in the labs please), or 2) it involves a medical condition we need to know about to treat you. Otherwise, I have all the people with Mutation's in paper files, locked in my desk. No hacking those. If you lie and cause a problem with your power, you're out." He gets serious, "You leave your cell phone home for the protests, I hope. Also use a Mac or one of my phones -Kordless. The government will not crack those unless it's SHIELD say."
Candace Hill Candace smiles, "I have 2 Phones. One is my main phone that I keep all the personal information on and that one stays at home. The other one is just an old Motorola that I use for video when things get a little hot." She shudders thinking about that. "Not a fan when things turn. I've been on the receiving end of pepper spray before. So I always have milk on hand when I go protesting now. These days I stay at the back of the crowd with a little table I set up for first aid and such." She makes a turn into the McDonalds. The drive through line is thoroughly swamped with cars so she pulls into a parking spot. "Okay in we go it seems." She unbuckles her seatbelt and exits the car.

Walking in, she orders a medium sized coffee. Nothing flashy for her. She does however put like 6 sugar packets into the coffee and adds some creamer to it. "Sorry. I've got a bit of a sweet tooth. Usually have a bag of jelly beans or something on me so I can graze on em." She laughs a little.
Ted Kord Ted Kord orders a large coffee. But he does outweigh her by a non-trivial amount. He orders several sticky buns and when they sit, pushes them between him and Candace. "Geeze you're skinny. You have any idea how much of a workout I do to look good in this outfit? I don't know how Batman does it but he's Batman. If you want some breakfast besides the raw sugar ask away. I am enjoying your company."

It being New York, there are only a couple of second glances at Ted.
Candace Hill Candace laughs a little. "I'm good. Thank you for the offer. I have always been athletic. I just do a lot of jogging and such. Plus when I do go out protesting, there is often parking problems so I end up walking for blocks and blocks. I think the longest I've had to walk for a protest was a mile. Thankfully I wasn't doing the table at that time or I'd have been making multiple trips." She smiles and finds seat to settle in. "Batman is a mystery to everyone. I mean how in the world does he handle Gotham. That place is messed up."

She takes a long sip of her heavily sweetened coffee. "Ah Thats good joe." She laughs. Taking a look around she makes note of the number of people looking at Ted and her. She shrugs, "No worries. I'm used to the looks." She smiles. "Usually its more angry looks but it is what it is." She smiles again. "So you're a hero, What's it like to save the day? When I am out Protesting, I don't get to see immediate results. Most of the time I don't see any results what so ever but people gotta be able use their voice to make the government listen. Sadly there is a lot of politicians who get a lot of backing from sponsorships and such."
Ted Kord Ted Kord smiles and takes a sip. "Heroing sounds a lot like protesting. I make a citizen's arrest, usually catching them in the act and half the time they get released because the victim won't come forward. Saving the world... I was there when Doomsday killed Superman. The monster caught me too and I'm lucky to be alive. And Supes did die. So I'm not a world saver in the traditional sense. I do more good running KordCo. We sponsor worthy causes. We give people a hand up. Charity... I'm not into charity. I rather make people independent and able to work, not expecting handouts."

"I was just at a block party to benefit a firehouse company and some drunken loudmouth who worked for me for maybe a month comes up to me and says, "Why don't you just pay the firehouse's bills, moneybags?"

"Well I can keep giving away money, sell KordCo, and give that away; but I'd be firing my employees or trusting them to who knows what corporation? I have very loyal employees. In the end, people have to do some things for themselves and unfortunately some are not worth the effort. They don't want help, they want to leech. So I am strategic about who I help to make things better. Ayn Rand said, 'You can't force the competent to be beholding to the incompetent.' Ayn was a bit of a jerk but... I made my money, I help people. As RuPaul says, 'Your opinion is none of my business.'"
Candace Hill "Thats Fair. A hand up is definitely not a hand out. Sometimes they can be the same but other times, A hand out would hinder a person from standing on their own. Give a homeless person money, they will spend it and poverty is expensive as all get out. Give a homeless person a home, they will have a place to get cleaned up, a place to prepare meals, and a place to step up and potentially find work to maintain that home. Nothing is cut and dry." Candace sips her coffee and smiles. "Its the difference between giving a person a fish and teaching them how to catch their own."

"Oh... That is really rough. I wouldn't have wanted to be there that day. To see that level of devastation would be a nightmare." She shakes her head trying not to think about it.

"I was at a 99% Rally yesterday. I don't expect the 1% to give up all their money. My issue is with the ones who store all the money in far off accounts so they don't have to pay taxes. When Trickle down economics doesn't trickle down, the rich get richer and the poor suffer."
Ted Kord Ted Kord says, "Some people get to the 1, get all the money they can possibly get and decide the only way to get even richer is to make the rest of the world poorer. I'm probably the upper 2. Wayne, Stark, Luthor are beyond me. I may get to the 1% but I don't care. More money than I can spend, enjoying the way I run my company. Love my people. A few get fired. I run a business. That drunk? My bot did a facial recognition scan on him. He was fired for doing lines of coke in the restroom. Two warnings. Screw him. I have rehab programs. He'd rather do coke. Buh-bye."

"Trickle down is bullshit. Not paying your share is bullshit. I'd prefer a flat tax myself. Or a Value Assessment Tax, though man I'd pay a lot for my toys... the Bug alone... Though I did build it... I don't know. Bad idea to bring up VAT to your accountants."
Candace Hill "See I don't make enough to actually hire an accountant though next year I may need to. I'm considered an independent contractor through Uber so I don't get w-2s from them. Instead I get hit with all the taxes but I have a few write offs I can do now. The suv itself is already paid for. It was left to me by a friend who passed. But Gas, tires, heck most auto repairs would be write offs because it is how I work. My other job, doing art, doesn't make as much."

She pulls out her phone and brings up a few pictures to show. "This is some of the stuff I do." The first picture is one of a night sky with an aurora lighting it up with a bunch of nature all around it. The next picture is one of an anime like character. "This one was someone's original character. They wanted some art done of them." She brings up one more. This one is clearly a protest piece where a human figure is being crushed by a large building. "Protesting is sort of a job in itself but it doesn't pay the bills. So I do art and drive Uber. I got 2 other roommates and we all gotta do our part if we wanna pay rent!"
Ted Kord Ted Kord looks at the art and smiles. "Very nice. Here take this," He puts a very blue business card on the table."

"I'm always looking for bright people. KordCo uses independents for a number of positions. Show that card and you'll get a job. I have a good feeling about you. Now I'm going to actually fly home now, but you're paid for the day and here... this is your tip. No arguments. Talking to you refreshed me. I'm going right back to the drawing board and that saves me way more money than this tip." He enters the value on his phone... which can sort most people's re ts and bills for a month.

"You are a delightful person, I hope to hear from you, even if it's just for a ride."
Candace Hill Candace smiles, "I might take you up on that! An actual job would definitely beat the inconsistency of Uber. Sometimes business isn't so good. But days like today make up for it. It all balances out.

Then she is tipped. Her eyes go wide and she is about to protest but... no arguments. "Thank you Very much Blue Beetle! I'm totally going to get rent paid with this. Then maybe go shopping!" She laughs a little. "You are as well, Mr. Beetle. It was nice talking with you and I can always work as a driver if you need one." She smiles and gives a wave. "Enjoy your flight. I think I am going to clock out a little early today and go to the park to draw." She smiles and waves to him. "It was a pleasure to meet you, Sir."
