Victor Stone It can be tough to work with speedsters in the physically confined space of the Danger Room -- the floor can only move so quickly, after all, and you don't want them smacking into a wall that has been holographically disguised to look like open air. Well, except as a hilarious prank that Victor has /definitely/ never pulled on any of his previous teammates. In this case, though, he's coaching one of the new prospects, so he wistfully decided to set the pranks aside and set up a course that works with the limitations of the simulation systems.

That's why, when Kyani arrives, he's going to find himself inside a plastic box with the floor coated in huge wood shavings. Round portals on various walls of the box lead to a warren of colored plastic tubes, like the most elaborate McDonald's playplace on Earth. There's even a windmill-sized wheel on one wall, and a tray of water a good 40 feet across. To wit, the Danger Room is simulating what it would be like to be shrunk down to rodent size and dropped into a hamster cage. Running through the holographic tubes will actually involve running across the room's hidden walls and carefully positioned physical barriers.

Vic himself is seated on a low, crudely constructed hut that would give a real hamster a cozy place to sleep. He's attending to a computer tablet, and has a mug with "World's Best Bot" printed on one side in the other hand, which he casually refills from a big simulated sippy tank of water as the younger Titan enters.
Kyani Kohanna     Kyani walks into the Danger Room and sees that everything is very big around him. He looks at his new kicks that were provided to him, and he's wearing his black basketball shorts and a blue long t-shirt. He looks around, "Uh...what are we doing?" he asks as he looks around and sees where Cyborg is sitting. "Is this supposed to help train me?" he asks looking at the course, "How fast do you want me to go?" yeah there is a lot of questions as he looks around again and walks over to the starting line.

There are butterflies in his stomach, he lets out a breath and tries to focus, "This is only training, not an audition, or is it?" He looks over to Cyborg, "If I fail this, do I not get on the team? I know I'm a Prospect, does that mean that if I fail I'm out or something?" he asks.
Victor Stone Victor raises his eyebrows as Kyani peppers him with questions. The younger man seems a bit anxious, but sometimes speedsters can come off that way if they don't make an effort to slow their speech, so he tries not to read too much into it. He flicks his eyes back to the tablet, takes a sip from the mug -- whose contents seem to have transmogrified into coffee when the liquid was poured -- and says with a smile, "It's OK, man, take it easy. This isn't for a grade."

He gestures at their surroundings with the tablet and continues, "I figured you could just mess around at first, loosen up, establish which of the speedster basics you're good on." He indicates various features and suggests their applications. First the tubes -- "Wall runs" -- then the pool -- "surface skipping" -- next the wheel -- "flat-out speed" -- finally the shavings-strewn floor -- "rough terrain."

With a quick upnod, he continues, "We can bring in holographic enemies or whatever if you want more of a challenge after that, but mainly I just want to know where you currently are before I start pushing you to new places."
Kyani Kohanna     Hearing Cyborg tell him to chill out and relax, visibly Kyani does do that. He looks at the course again, taking in everything, he wasn't one who just rushed into things, he learned a lot during his time in Juvie, and when he was learning parkour. He had to analyze where he was running, jumping and flipping over things, or sliding underneath things. Since he's gotten his speed, this to him seemed like forever, which was something he enjoyed.

He looks to the spinning wheel, "How about the wheel first?" he says as he jogs over to it. He moves back and forth for a moment, he begins running and pushing himself. Lightning is starting to spark all over him as he runs. The wheel is doing whatever it's supposed and Kyani is moving at about 425mph currently as he runs, there are spurts where he starts to move faster but the speed drops but to him it looks like he's pushing himself.
Victor Stone Sure, it's kind of ridiculous, but a giant hamster wheel works for a treadmill, and doesn't have nearly as many moving parts to burn out. Vic's tablet keeps him apprised of Kyani's speed, even digesting it into a nice easy-to-read graph. The lightning, Cyborg takes in stride -- so to speak -- he's certainly seen it before, and so long as Kyani doesn't launch it at him, it shouldn't be too much danger to his systems.

After a little while, he flips the tablet around to show to Kyani, pointing to the spikes in speed, followed by the little dips. "When you get those bursts, are you just pushing harder and then tiring out, or is there something else going on?" he asks. It could just be normal variance in running speed -- as an athlete, Vic is certainly familiar with that -- but it could also be Nitro teetering on the edge of hitting a new tier of his power. Worth wondering.
Kyani Kohanna     "Huh?" he turns his head to look at the tablet, he shrugs, "I'm just trying to push myself really." he says as he looks to forward as he felt himself teeter a bit. He could feel himself wanting to move faster, but he wasn't sure if that is a feeling or something or not. "What do you want me to do." he says as he looks like he's trying to push but his speed still teeters and he is exerting himself to do just that, he just can't figure out why he can't do just that.
Victor Stone "Hmm," Victor says, tucking his tablet under one metal arm and running his fingers along his jawline. "If you want to keep messing with speed, here's a thought: maybe try /not/ pushing so much. Speedsters aren't all fast-twitch leg-day beasts. A lot of them are powered by an external energy source. Consider getting up to that threshold and then letting that energy take over for your muscles. Like shifting gears, basically."

Leave it to Vic to trot out a car metaphor.

"But if you want to move on to something else, that's cool, too. This is kind of a self-directed assessment, so we can figure out where you want to improve."
Kyani Kohanna     He thinks on that and he quirks a brow, "Huh, that oddly makes sense." he chuckles but he slows down from the wheel and he jumps out of the wheel and goes over to the tubes. "What does the tubes do?" he asks as he looks towards them and then to the wall run. "Also how fast do I need to run on the walls?" he asks. "I've done that before strangely enough, but never knew what speeds I needed to run them." he says as he begins stretching, he feels his body having been warmed up and now he's ready to do some more work.

Looking over to Victor to get his input. He looks at the new kicks and is surprised they still look good on his feet, "Hey what did you make these kicks out of, they aren't burnt out or anything." he laughs as he starts to hop from foot to foot.
Victor Stone Vic laughs and answers, "If I told you, I'd have to kill you." He pauses a second, for effect, then finishes, "By which I mean the whole answer would bore you to death. Basically, it's a weave of polymers and lightweight alloys that rivals space shuttle tiles for temperature resistance and can take an insane amount of wear and tear."

Gesturing at the tubes, he answers, "Those don't really do anything, they're just a course to run that will let you try wall running in combination with going around the full range of possible corners in 3D space."

As for the rest of the question: "There's not an exact speed, it depends on how grippy the wall and your shoes are. Also, a big part of it is getting a good bit of momentum going as you run toward the wall -- that momentum is preserved when you turn upward, so it keeps pressing you into the wall like a substitute gravity, so you maintain traction for a while. It's the same principle that pulls something you're swinging around on the end of a string away from your hand, or lets roller coasters do loop-de-loops without people falling out. Some people call it centrifugal force, but technically that's kind of a misnomer."
Kyani Kohanna     Kyani nods his head, "Actually that sounds pretty cool Vic." he says as he looks at tubes, then to the wall past it. He begins bouncing on the balls of his feet, getting the feel for the shoes and he rolls his shoulders as he looks to be getting ready, and off like a shot he goes. His arms and legs pumping as he runs through the tubes. Everything slows down around him and he's able to take in everything he sees as if things are standing still. A sigh is audibly heard through the mic, as if the world has come off his shoulders.

He is just run back and forth through the tubes, "So the shoes give me extra grip as I move, the faster I go, the more they grip as I adjust pressure within the shoes?" he asks. "Is that right?" he begins skipping certain tubes, if there is enough gaps to run through, he will do that, or going through the tubes and long jumping to skip a tube to get to the other side.

"Let me make a few more passes and I will go towards the wall." he says. He isn't ready yet, wanting to keep his legs stretched but at the same time using his body differently so he can begin some new tricks.
Victor Stone "That's part of it, but it's mostly just physics," Vic answers with a nod. "When you're running, you're building up a crazy amount of momentum, and figuring out the right way to direct that momentum will let you do all kinds of impossible things." He watches the blurred, electric streak that is the Titan prospect zip around the tubes above and around him. "Keep in mind that every footstep is pushing you away from what you're stepping on, just a little bit, so balancing your momentum against that is how you can stick to walls or even ceilings at speed."

He grins and adds, "It's also that momentum that can make you a physical threat to someone much bigger and tougher than you are. When you throw something or run into something at speed, that momentum is transferred into it as an absolutely enormous force."
Kyani Kohanna     "I've honestly never thought about that." he tells Cyborg, "Man there is so much I don't know and never even thought about." he says as he continues running. He takes the time to listen to Cyborg as he instructs him. "I will focus on that, I will focus on what I can do with my powers and how they truly work." he says to him. "You saiid you worked with another speedster, is this how you trained him or diid he just find his own way?" he asks.

"I'm sorry if I"m asking a lot of questions, I've only had my powers for about a year and a half two years tops." he says. "I've only been working and using my speed to deliver packages and such, it wasn't until I met some pro heroes who told me I need to do something more with my abilities." he says to Victor.
Victor Stone "Don't be sorry, questions are good. That's how we all gotta learn." Vic quirks his eyebrows upward at the idea of him training Kid Flash, and he laughs and shakes his head. "Man, I appreciate the vote of confidence, but Wally and I were just kids, learning the whole hero thing together. I might have come up with some ideas for ways he could use his powers, usually in the middle of some intense super-battle, but no way in a million years could I say I /trained/ him. I was just figuring out what /I/ could do, most of the time."

He takes another sip of his coffee and continues, "What you're hearing from me is just my knowledge of physics, plus having worked with Kid Flash and seen him in action for a few years. I hope I'm helping you, but acting as a trainer or a coach? That's something I'm having to figure out as I go along, too." With a shrug, he concludes: "Titans basically started as a peer mentorship thing anyway. A place we could help each other figure ourselves out. Not that much has changed."
Kyani Kohanna     "Thanks." he says as he looks off in his direction, but he misses a step. He rolls forward and slides along the tube and lands on his back. "OUCH........!" he says as he lies there for a few moments, "Well I guess I have to go the same way." he tells Cyborg with a chuckle. "Thanks for helping me out today, though I have a lot of work to do adn I'm about da grind mah'dude." he chuckles as he looks at Cyborg.

"Alright, lets tackle this wall." he grins as lightning flickers through his eyes and Kyani races towards the wall, and this is when Cyborg will see his speed spike, he shifted as he's not moving at 525mph. To Kyani he does feel he's moving faster but as he nears the wall, he leaps at the wall and he begins running up the wall, if there was real windows they would shatter at the speed he's moving at, or would they as he races up the wall, and as he nears the top, he slides along the edge for a moment then he's running down the wall.
Victor Stone The Danger Room takes the titanic impact; its walls were designed to absorb all kinds of punishment, but from the way they shudder, it might have been a near thing. Cyborg leaps up and pumps a fist in the air, nearly spilling his coffee in his excitement, and shouts, "BOOM! That's what I'm TALKING 'bout!"

He sets the mug down and excitedly starts running over the scenario, pantomiming with his hands. "When you jumped into the wall, it took a bunch of that momentum, like it was hit by a freight train. Then what was left held you against the wall all the way until you got that little bit of drift at the top."

He continues, "Did you notice that big hit when you jumped and hit it feet-first? If you do a jump and kick like that into someone you're fighting, your speedster legs are used to taking those impacts, but his FACE won't be. That's a great go-to move for hitting a big dude. Here! Try it!" Vic settles into a balanced lineman crouch, lowering his center of gravity and planting his feet. Then, in front of him, he projects a shimmering blue-violet force field.
Kyani Kohanna     Hearing the exciting words of Cyborg, he chuckles a little bit and a well of pride flows through him. He feel something within him, he did feel the difference when he leapt onto the wall. "Yeah I did feel that change and the impact, also I feel something that I didn't notice is protecting me." he tells him.

When Cyborg tells him to come at him, Kyani is at the top of the building again as he has run back up and down again. Now he sees Cyborg and he runs focusing his power as he runs down the wall. He comes down and the lightning behind him streaks in a long streak. As he nears Cyborg, he leaps towards Cyborg, he does a spin kick. Utilizing his martial arts skills, the tornado kick whips out so damn fast. He feels his foot hit the shield and he feels that impact and he bounces back and as he bounces back, he tries to control it into a flip and he rolls backwards a little bit and he grunts. He looks towards Cyborg.
Victor Stone There's an epic electric crack as Kyani's new boot hits the shield, and Vic is propelled backward a good 15 meters, feet skidding across the floor as huge shavings fly up in airborne eddies around him. Because he had prepared carefully for the hit, he doesn't topple at the end of the skid, but the force and electric transference of the hit was enough to punch a big jagged hole in the middle of the projected shield. The edges of the breach shine a bright, piercing blue, and after a second, polygons of energy start to fold into the void, repairing it. Before the process can complete, Vic straightens up with a grin and dismisses the shield. "Niiiiiiiice," he drawls. "Now imagine how that would have worked if I weren't ready for you. THAT is how David takes down Goliath."
Kyani Kohanna     A smiles shows on his face, looking at his new kicks and he looks towards Cyborg, "Hell yeah!" he jumps up and runs over to Cyborg and fist bumps him, if he allows it. "Dude that was pretty kick ass, I will work on that and try to incorporate more of my fighting skills with my speed. It feels like when I channel my speed through all of me, I feel more at home and now more aware in a sense." he chuckles. "I'm tired, you think we can call it here for the day?" he asks, "I will be in here quite a bit."
Victor Stone Vic holds out his knuckles for the bump, then squints and shakes out his hand afterward, as though Kyani has injured his metal knuckles by simply being TOO POWERFUL. Let's all admit it: Vic can be a little bit of a cornball from time to time.

"That's awesome, man. I think that's gonna help you embrace the source of your speed, like we were talking about." He flashes a thumbs-up. "And yeah, get some rest -- you might find yourself getting kinda wiped out after you're stretching your abilities. The best thing to do is take a rest day, just like a bodybuilder, so that your body can recover and come back stronger. Take care of yourself, Nitro."
Kyani Kohanna     "Thanks for all of the help Vic." he says after the fistbump. "I think this is what I needed, I will take teh rest of the day off and get back to training tomorrow, I have this new speed I need to work on and get the hang of." he chuckles alittle bit. He yawns a bit and he covers his mouth as he feels his body growing a bit tired, he knows he needs to eat and rest. "Take it easy." he says as he heads out of the training room.
