Claire Temple Helped by a fair amount of 'merciful' pain medication and blood loss, Peggy remained unconscious through the whole evening and night of the incident. There were lots of nurses and doctors in and out the whole night, making certain she remained stable. He was shooed out of the room a few times and told he should go home, but a few phone calls and SHIELD strings pulled and he probably was able to get himself back in. Never the less, it's well after 10 the next morning and Peggy's still been asleep through sunlight and another morning round of vitals.

She looks almost normal. Still a bit pale, but not deathly like yesterday. Some of the soft curl has fallen out of her hair and it's unnerving to see her so utterly unmoving, but minus the hospital gown, she mostly looks like she could be at home asleep in their bed.
Daniel Sousa It was all the usually calm and professional Daniel could do not to physically fight to stay in the room when they tried to kick him out. He definitely yelled some, and then got on the phone to Howard asking the man to pull some strings or buy the hospital a new wing, whatever it took to stay next to Peggy. In the end it was Phillips pulling some defense strings that got him to stay as Peggy's bodyguard, being as Peggy was a director of a vital intelligence agency injured by as yet unidentified foreign agents security was required. By the look on the hospital administrator's face as he spoke with the General, Daniel guessed the man was his usual blunt and forceful self in explaining things.

In all as infuriating as it was to deal with, Daniel almost welcomed the distraction of almost being kicked out, once that had been settled all there was to do to wait. Well, wait and write. So as the morning ligh comes, Daniel is sitting beside the bed in a chair a borrowed clipboard on his lap scrawling away on a bit of hospital stationary, pausing in his work every few moments to look at Peggy, or gently put his hand on hers. All of it was better than thinking of how stupid they had been and how much it had cost them.
Claire Temple The next time he looks up, her head is ever so slightly moving. The quiet sound of his scratching pen calling to her in the otherwise uncomfortably sterile and quiet room. Then his hand is on hers and her fingertips slightly twitch, curling against his, still half asleep but wanting to reach out for that touch. Her dark eyes flutter open a moment later, trying to claw her way out of sleep and drugs but it's mussy going at first.

"...Daniel?" Her voice cracks out softly, the dryness of the hospital air and medications enough to make her tone little more than a rasp. She tries to focus on his eyes, to get herself a little more awake.
Daniel Sousa At the sound of his name Daniel's pen is put down and he stands leaning on the railing of Peggy's bed to do it, with his cane off on the far side of him. "Yeah, Peggy, I'm here," he says looking down at her eyes brimming with concern. "It's Sunday morning around ten, you're okay?" he says but the way that he trails off like that eyes turning away suggests there's more to that story than he's telling. He turns his head back and squeezes her hand, "Just glad you're awake."
Peggy Carter Seeing that look in his eyes and, more so, just hearing that tone of his voice? It tells her much of what she needs to know. Peggy draws a slow breath in, wrapping her hand a little tighter around his palm and hugging it into her chest. She gives him a flickering, faint smile as he tells her exactly the things she always asks, the time and, if she's been unconscious a long time, what day it is. Only one day gone, that's probably a good sign.

"From... the tone of your voice and that look on your face, I suspect not. But I feel... alright. Mussy, mainly. Strange." She admits softly, trying to piece together the heaviness in her limbs and the otherwise awkward, faint lightness in her body otherwise.
Daniel Sousa Daniel returns that smile but it's a weak thing that does not linger long before replaced by that worried look again. He lets his hand be taken and drawn against Peggy's chest, glad of the contact, the reassurance that she at least is still with him. Though that doesn't make what he has to say any easier. "Peg," he begins before he loses his words, pausing them to gather them again before he continues. "Peg, they say you're going to be okay, and up on your feet in no time, but-" another pause and the desolated look that had claimed his face while she slept returns briefly before he pushes it down replaced with the confident, in control mask he wears when things get bad, "But," another pause, and he squeezes her hand tighter. "I'm sorry, we lost the baby."
Claire Temple Her hand tightens around his against her chest, like she could hug his whole body against her that way but she knows his hand is about all she has the strength to reach for. But Peggy is trying, doing her very best to give him the support through the words she already expects him to say. As much as she wants to look away from that destroyed glance in his eyes, she doesn't let herself. She stares drowsily over to him, her throat tightening as she finally heards the news.

She gives him the faintest nod afterwards. Dark eyes finally blink away, pushing back the sudden glassiness she didn't expect to be there but has still come. She pulls his hand up to her lips, pressing a gentle kiss against his knuckles. "N-no...I'm sorry. I got... sloppy, and... God, Daniel. I'm sorry." She whispers against his skin, not quite able to meet his eyes again now.
Daniel Sousa The press of his hand against her does give him some strength to say what needs to be said, though he looks away too when the words are done before Peggy apologizes, which brings his eyes back to her again, even if she's still looking away. "Peg, it's on us both, we both knew the risks and we went ahead and did what we did anyhow... " he finds his words failing him as his emotions threaten to overwhelm him, his eyes glassing over too. "And we all," all three of them. "Paid the price." His hand grips tighter. "I wish to god we could take it back, but, I know we can't."
Peggy Carter There's silence from her again, Peggy's throat too tight to properly find words. While it certainly hurts, she can't help herself but slowly pull into curling up on her side, facing him, both her arms coming up now to just hug his hand and forearm in against her chest. "...I know." She finally manages to rasp out. They knew the risks and took them anyway. Once she's settled, fully curled on her side as much as her injury will allow, her head presses a bit tighter against the pillow. She's half trying to hide her face, she doesn't *want* him to see her cry. But she can't stop either. The tears are coming now in fast, hot waves as she slightly shakes against him, holding his hand so tightly it might be slightly numb. "I-I...love you..."
Daniel Sousa Daniel doesn't turn away from her tears, his own falling slow down his cheeks, the angry torrent having come and gone during his vigil when the news was still as fresh as it was for Peggy.

"I love you too, Peggy," he tells her quietly, leaning over to kiss her exposed cheek, free arm pressing against her back in something like a hug, "That's never going to change," he assures her in a whisper against her cheek as she kisses it again. "I am always going to love you." Lest she think this mistake would change any of that for him.
Peggy Carter "I...I just want to go home. I want our bed and... Our house. And just... you. To just hide... with you." Peggy admits softly, probably one of the most broken things she's ever said. It will pass. She'll piece herself back together. But even with her worst injuries, she never wanted to hide from the world. She was always fighting to get back out there. Now, she just sobs quietly, leaning into his warmth as much as the awkward nature of the bed would let them. A bit more of a sob cracks her breath for a few heartbeats, trying to fight her own tears under control but simply failing.
Daniel Sousa "You got it Peg," Daniel says still holding her awkwardly and letting her cry. The hug hides the concern in his eyes, Peggy's desire to hide away definitely did not go unnoticed, but he doesn't remark except to make that promise and to hold her that much tighter. "As soon as they will let you go, we'll get you home and I'll be there with you for as long as you need," he says, before he admits. "I just want you and home too. The world will have to survive without us for a bit."
Peggy Carter The tears last a good bit longer, Peggy not able to get them under control, it seems to get harder the more she's trying. But, eventually, the numbness takes over. Her breath evens out some and she dares to try and shift onto her back again. A slight hiss of pain escapes her lips, abdomen wounds always hurt horribly, but she does manage to settle back into the bed. "I'm sorry. I... hell. We knew... this... It's the work. Have you talked to the office? I... I can't keep both of us here. I know that." She's slowly trying to rebuild her wall as well, even as her voice is still ragged and raspy.
Daniel Sousa Daniel holds Peggy through the tears despite the ache in his leg and eventually his back, when she shifts to lay on her back he does his best to help ease her there before collapsing into his chair, with a grunt of discomfort.

Daniel keeps hold of her hand, listening to her words before he shakes his head, "They can manage without us for a couple of days, I've called the office, things are being taken care of, they even raided the ship before it left port. We're alright for awhile," he says. "I didn't tell them, but I think Lily knows from how she sounded when I talked to her, and probably Jarvis," he says, knowing she'd want to know how far things had spread. "Anyhow, I am sure even if I wanted to get back Lily would drag me back home, so it's going to be just the two of us for a bit, like it or not."
Peggy Carter Her free hand comes up, gently trying to brush away the streaks of tears from her face. There's a few hitches in her breath still, but Peggy's got herself put back together more. She's still holding his hand, her one lifeline to stability. She gives a weak, crackled sound which is an almost laugh as he admits that Lily might know, "Of course... Lily would. And just the two of sounds... nice."

A bittersweet smile crosses her lips, trying to see some sense in this. She dares turn her head to look up at his face again, dark eyes bloodshot with tears, but she's at least able to look at him, "We... barely had time to be just the two of us... before. I... wanted this. I still do... some day. But maybe time for us... we'll take it. We... need it."
Daniel Sousa There's a faint smile about Lily, an agreement that of course she'd know, then he nods, "It does, doesn't it?" he asks her of time just the two of them before he listens to the rest, wiping away the tears in his eyes before meeting her eyes letting that look be another lifeline for her.

"Time would be good, for us, and to be ready for more," he says. "I think everything happened so fast and without any warning, it didn't really set in that our lives were going to have to be different," he says.

He glances down at their hands, squeezing hers, "It doesn't make our screwing up right, but it does explain it," he says, before he draws her hand to his lips and kisses her knuckles. "We'll be careful when it's just the two of us," he says. "And when we're ready, we know things will need to be different, for awhile, for the both of us."

He kisses her hand again. "But I still want this too, I still want to meet our child, but on our terms, when we're ready to deal with everything that comes with it, before and after they're born."
Peggy Carter It wasn't really a comfort, though they were both trying to cling to it. But the sentiment made sense. They'd not even been married a year. Peggy takes in another deeper, uneven breath, but the tears seem to have mostly abated by now. She gives him a faint dip of her head in affirmation, "You're... right. It really did happen... so fast. Everything did." She pulls his fingertips up to her lips, eyes pressing tightly shut as she kisses his knuckles once more.

Then there is the nurse coming in for another round of checking up on the woman, especially now that Peggy is awake. They'll have to break holding hands again for the nurse to go about her business, but Peggy seems better able to pull herself together when there is someone else in the room. She answers the woman's questions quietly, but fully. It's like all her emotions have simply shut off. But that's easier than tears.
