Dyani Zitkala Dyani Zitkala has in fact been flying into things all over the mansion, not that she seems to mind, but it has meant more bees needing to be out and about so she can figure out where it is safe to fly and walk, and where the walls will jump out of no where and slam into her. For most, it might not seem like a big deal, I mean her eyes are huge after all, and large things are easier to see, but for Dyani, she'd rather be outside because you don't run into walls and ceilings out there.
Clarice Ferguson     "Dyani!" Clarice calls to her airborne friend - mentee? ... whatever they were to each other. The purple skinned teleporter had arrived a little while ago - strangely, not via her own purple-hued portal, but one generated by another mutant. After a few words with Hank, she's headed outside to find the diminuative flying mutant. "Doctor McCoy wants to work on those goggles!" she explains, linking arms with the girl once she lands nearby, so she can better help guide the girl through the halls. "He might even have a prototype. That would be nice, wouldn't it?" There's something tight in the smile Clarice directs towards Dyani, even as she tries to encourage the girl, as the pair make their way towards the computer lab. Stopping outside, Clarice lifts her hand to rap on the door, even as she wonders if this was the sort of room where you're supposed to knock - or just walk on in. Well, either way, it's better to err on the side of polite.
Dyani Zitkala Clarice's voice is all Dyani needs to hear and she is flying full speed toward the purple mutant... full speed may not be the best, it looks like she's going to slam into Clarice when she suddenly pulls up and lands in front of her and hugs her.

She hooks her arm in Clarice's to walk with her, used to being guided and it made it /so/ much easier.

"Prototype? I might be able to see?!" She adds her own knocks to the door, and they are not light.
Henry McCoy Henry had set up some equipment in the computer lab - plenty of testing and analytical gear to narrow down and hone the effectiveness of the goggles he'd prepared. In fact, the prototype goggles sit on an over-sized mousepad. While not initially stylish, they certanly look hi-tech.

As the two ladies enter the computer lab, Henry offers a wave and a grin. "Hello there! Ready for science?" He beams, chuckling just a bit. "I think I have something setup that can help - we can dial it in, but we'll need Dyani's input."
Clarice Ferguson     "That's the hope, Dyani," Clarice confirms as she opens the door and the pair step inside together.
"Definitely ready." Clarice flashes Hank a smile as she brings Dyani over to a chair next to the goggles - and perches herself on the edge of the table, trying to take a relaxed posture. Though perhaps the jiggling of her foot gives away the nervous energy she's trying to supress. "So how do they work?"
Dyani Zitkala There is a proper order to things. First the bees rush over to fly around Hank, happily buzzing and looking him over until Dyani herself shoots over there to hug a leg... yeah, she's short. At that time the bees all land on her and wait for their next chance to buzz at something.

"We are happy to see you Dr Hank!" She never gets that right. Sometimes he's Mister Hank, sometimes Mister Dr... she's just not real good there. "You need my... " she spots the thing on the mouse pad. "Whoa... what is /that/?"
Henry McCoy The hug is returned, his smile never leaving his face - no fear of bees on him! "Well, going by the standard understanding of how compound eyes work..." Henry taps his chin. "It will help Dyani focus on the eyes facing forward. That way her mind only has to parse out that data - as opposed to making the calculations and summations needed to take from her full perception. Wearing these and having them powered on would limit her overall awareness of areas she could normally see, for the sake of being able to focus on the area in front of her." In theory, it should allow for her to focus on print, computer screens, all the things directly in front of her in a binocular field of vision."

A look to the goggles, picking the up carefully. "It's still a theory - only Dyani can let us know it works for her. I've got some visual acuity tests to run while she wears them."
Clarice Ferguson     "So, basically, less is more?" Clarice replies in a dry tone, as she watches Dyani enthusiastically greet Hank. The smile that crosses her features then is more relaxed and genuine as she somehow allows herself to simply enjoy the girl's enthusiasm.
It made a pleasant distraction from the worries on her mind at the moment.
"Well, I hope it works - but I'm sure you'll find a solution one way or another. I don't understand how you science-types pull off the things you do, but..." They always seem to figure it out in the end.
Dyani Zitkala Dyani stares at the goggle things, turning her head in several directions to try and get a good look at them. Finally it requires bees, and off they go to look at the googles. "We see so many things at once," she comments. "From many angles. That is why we use the bees, their range of view is smaller, much smaller... so we can see a little easier with them."

Now that she knows what the goggles look like, and what they are supposed to so, she sits down in the chair Clarice got for her. "What do you need us to do?" They really do look like something from Star Trek, but she's not going to say that.
Henry McCoy A grin to Clarice. "Math and determination." He winks to her. "Less is more in this instance, yes. I am sure there will be times when Dyani wants her full range of awareness - these are not a permanent fix." Henry explains. "I imagine it might cause quite a headache if she left them on all day." A slight shrug to that.

"You need to try them on, then I have some pictures for you to look at." A smile as he lifts the goggles and offers them to Dyani. "I want to make sure you can focus, and that your depth perception is on par with normal binocular vision."
Clarice Ferguson     Math. Clarice makes a face, but doesn't comment. She's working on math - really - but math is //hard//. She lets Dyani handle the goggles while she watches, though her gaze strays to Henry before she adds, "You know - we both really appreciate you putting the time and effort into this. And I think I can speak for her parents on this one, too. Thanks." Whether the prototype works or not.
Dyani Zitkala Closing her eyes while Hank puts the goggles on Dyani's head, she makes a slight adjustment, and only then does she actually open her eyes.

"Ahhhh! Wha... wha..." she screams then tries to scoot away from the goggles on her face, which clearly she can't, so she is just pushing backwards in the chair she's sitting in cause holy forty sheets to the wind, that's not what the world looks like.

It takes just a moment for her to settle a little, she almost remembers when the world looked like that, before her change. "Weird, weird, very weird...!"
Henry McCoy He was expecting the reaction, not holding her - but also making sure she doesn't trip or injure herself. "Indeed. Weird. It is likely a nostalgic sensation." A smile, not rushing or crowding her. "Just... breathe for a moment or two, and relax as best you can. Just need to let your mind adjust to the new reformation of your scope of view." Henry explains.

A look to Clarice and a grin. "I am always happy to help folks adjust to their gifts, and make things more livable for them."
Clarice Ferguson     Clarice, honestly, had //not// been expecting the reaction - and when Dyani screams, she jumps to her feet, looking around as if expecting trouble. One of her hands goes out at her side, palm turned up and partially closed - but no javelin appears in her hand. Shit. No, okay, calm down Clarice. There's no danger. It's just... Dyani.
    Shit.
After a deep breath, she manages to calm her own jitters, and positions herself in front of the be-goggled mutant. "Hey... Dyani. I'm right here, yeah?" she remarks in the most soothing voice she can muster.
Dyani Zitkala The bees all seem to fly in tiny little circles for a moment, causing Dyani to reach out and gather them up with her hands. This perspective changes how they see as well apparently, and that's just not a good thing. She'll have to work on that at another time, but for now she has them gathered up and safe.

Take a few deep breaths she nods to Hank, but she is looking at Clarice, "Are you okay, we are okay, you are okay?" She sounds concerned, and for the moment the goggles and all that are unimportant.
Henry McCoy There's no concern on Henry's face as Clarice reacts - his focus is on Dyani. The bees are noticed, however - the man scratching at his chin. "Do they see what you see, Dyani? Or vice versa?" He wonders, watching as the insects react to the change in vision of the young woman. "How do they look to you?" He asks.

A look to Clarice, and a smile. "I am hoping the symbiotic link between her and the hive is not going to be affected with this change of vision."
Clarice Ferguson     "I'm fine, Dyani. We're both fine," Clarice reassures the girl - feeling the thud of her heart starting to slow again. She felt so jumpy - and she hated it, but everything was fine. Right?
"Let's scoot your chair back up - yeah?" she asks - moving towards Dyani to help her with the chair, and looking to Hank uncertainly. "Well. I guess this also gives us the chance to experiment more on her connection with them. I- I never thought that how //she// sees would have anything to do with how //they// see..."
Dyani Zitkala Dyani adjusts herself in the chair a little more, watching Clarice because she can see her more clearly now and that's an amazing thing. "How we see effects the hive, because we are the hive. They see through our eyes and we see through theirs, but we can stop that when we need to. They are just not used to not seeing what we see."

She swings her eyes back to look at Hank now and a huge grin spreads across her face. No head tilting, no shifting, just bam, there he is. "I can see you!"
Henry McCoy Of course, the man looks pleased when she starts focusing. "It might be that if you need to focus on the hive, you take off the goggles." Henry explains. "How many fingers am I holding up." His hand moves up, showing three fingers - likely hard to sort out when she was without the goggles.

"How do we look, Dyani?" He looks to Clarice, then back to Dyani. "I am thinking it is working."
Clarice Ferguson     "Seems like it might be," Clarice agrees - a little hopefulness leaking into her tone. Her smile is more relaxed as she retakes her perch on the edge of the table - she's even stopped jiggling her foot as she focuses her attention on Dyani, and her actions and reactions. "Maybe if all the testing in here goes well - we can set up an obstacle course for you," she suggests in a lightly teasing voice.
Dyani Zitkala Dyani starts to tilt her head, out of habit, but she stops, "Three, you have three fingers up!" She looks over at Clarice again, then back to Hank, "I can see you both so clearly! I didn't know there was such detail to your faces, or your fur!" She reaches out and caresses Hank's arm. "This is so much more than we thought could happen! We have not seen like the bees since our change, thank you so much!"

She looks like she's about to spring out of the chair. "We can do the obstacle course! You will see!"
Henry McCoy The Beast beams when she gets the number right. "We want to make sure your depth perception is aligned." He smiles. "But yes, an obstacle course would be on the list once we have everything dialed in properly." A smile. "Dyani, can you go get me that folder?" He motions to a desk across the room.

"I want to take it a bit slow until she's used to the new perception - but yes, a walking and eventual flying obstacle course is something I had planned." He explains to Clarice.
Clarice Ferguson     "We'll have to film some of this for her parents," Clarice suggests. In fact - she reaches into her pocket, pulling out her cellphone so she can access the camera - flicking her thumb over record so she can capture the girl's attempt to follow the instruction. Hopefully her depth perception isn't too badly affected? Or perhaps it would take practice.
Dyani Zitkala Dyani normally doesn't do slow, but as she does to stand the whole world looks so differently, she wobbles a little. "Whoa... that's so trippy." She manages to keep herself from falling and takes a tentative step, but like everything else she does, there is no backing down.

Each step toward the folder gets a little quicker until she picks it up and brings it back, walking like a normal person by the time she gets back. "We got a little dizzy, but we figured it out."
Henry McCoy A smile as Clarice begins recording. "There may be some updates needed to magnification settings - to help with the vertigo feeling." A smile to Dyani as she does retrieve the folder. "Well done. I think I should be able to dial it in in a day or two. The onboard computer for the goggles records her body biorythms and behaviors, to better understand what she's seeing. It will eventually offer a good deal of stabilization on its own, once it has analyzed her profile." Henry beams. "I'm glad it was such a good first test run, though."
Clarice Ferguson     "Should we try having her read something?" Clarice asks curiously. "I mean - she hasn't done any reading in a while. So... something simple?" She keeps the phone on and aimed towards Dyani and Hank. "Dyani - do you want to try reading something? If that's too much for one day, that's fine..." She smiles encouragingly at the girl from her position still perched on the edge of one of the tables.
Dyani Zitkala Dyani waves to the camera because she can /see/ it. "Hello mother, hello father! We can see!" She chimes, then looks back to Hank. "Mister Hank made us these goggles, they are still being worked on, but we can see." She waves to Hank, "Clarice, show them Mister Hank!"

She is all smiles and completely excited, and will do what is requested. "We have not read since we were ten, unless it was huge billboards, those are much easier to read then things in books."
Henry McCoy If the camera is turned on Henry, he offers a wave. "Afternoon." The man smiles. The folder is opened, a few pages in within. "Give it a try. There are some easier papers in there in terms of subject. I wasn't certain when the last time you had read was, so I have all ranges." A nod to Dyani.

"If you start getting a headache, then stop - and we'll see if we can adjust things."
Clarice Ferguson     Clarice does indeed get Hank in the shot - before focusing back in on Dyani as she's handed some papers - a hopeful look on her features. "You've got this, Dyani," she encourages the girl quietly.
Hell. Maybe she and Dyani can practice reading together - though Clarice wasn't entirely sure the girl wouldn't excitedly and innocently blab about Clarice's own reading problems in the most well-intentioned fashion.
....maybe they won't practice reading together.
Dyani Zitkala Accepting the papers, Dyani looks at them with that same huge smile on her face. She can see the letters clearly, perhaps too clearly, it sort of makes her stomach lurch to be looking at the black letters on the white page.

She reads the first sentence, though maybe a couple of words are said wrong, but she reads it out loud so they both can hear it and her parents can, "We do not know this word," she points to the word. "But the others we an see very clearly, it makes our stomach feel funny."
Henry McCoy As he listens, he nods. "The vertigo. Seeing things in binocular will have a bit of an affect on your equilibrium until we get it dialed in on the goggles, and you are used to it." Still, Henry smiles. "That was well done, Dyani. Top marks." A grin. There's a look to Clarice, to see what she thinks.
Clarice Ferguson     "We'll send you another update when we've worked on the goggles more. Bye!" Clarice chimes - letting Dyani chime in with a goodbye, before she sets down the phone - moves towards Dyani to wrap the girl into a tight hug. She makes sure to approach her so that Dyani can see her coming, however - rather than surprise her from her now greatly increased blind-spot. "That was marvelous!" she crows - before releasing the hug, and beaming at Hank. "You're a genius. Thank you - so much. Her parents are going to be thrilled."
Dyani Zitkala Dyani does in fact wave to her parents, "We will call you soon!"

She can see Clarice coming her way, and for a moment she turns her head, then turns is back to look at her. Yes, there is a blind spot, something she will have to get used to, it was odd that it was there so she turns her head again, then back again. When the hug arrives, she hugs right back with a giggle.

Once Clarice steps back however it is Hank who gets a hug from her, "Thank you Dr Hank! We can read with these... we are so excited!" She is vibrating all over now, including her wings fluttering behind her.
Henry McCoy After the hug, Henry motions to the goggles. "OK, that's enough for today. Close your eyes, take them off, then take a breath. Then you can open your eyes." The man explains, giving Dyani a pat on her shoulder. Once she takes off the goggles, he accepts them back.

"I'll run a few updates, tests, then we can get these back to you Dyani."
Clarice Ferguson     Clarice takes Dyani gently by the arm - in preparation for the goggles coming back off. The girl'd had such a dramatic reaction to putting the goggles on - she has no idea how she'll react to having them off. She gives the girl's arm a gentle, encouraging squeeze and a smile, as she waits supportively.
"Your parents are going to freak out when they see that video."
Dyani Zitkala A soft frown touches Dyani's lips for a moment, then she nods. They still needed work, but it was so cool getting to see. Closing her eyes she lifts the goggles off and offers them toward Hank, giving her head a minute before she opens her eyes to the blurry, constantly shifting world again.

"Us reading," she says softly. "That is all our human father has ever wanted, us to be able to read again."
Henry McCoy "He will get that soon enough, and you will too Dyani. I promise." He says, earnestly. "And see things like normal, and have the option to go back to your hive sight as you need to." A smile to her. "You'll be writing, reading and catching up. You've got a lot of homework ahead of you." A wry chuckle.

"Let me know how they react? We can arrange a meeting again if they want to see you in person with it?"
Clarice Ferguson     "Definitely," Clarice agrees, answering Hank with a smile and a nod. A smile that falters a moment later. "The, uhh, Brotherhood can always arrange their transport out here if necessary," she adds, quickly hurrying on to say, "Thank you again, Hank." She extends her hand to shake his, then looks down to Dyani as she remarks, "We should go - we don't want to take up too much of Dr. McCoy's time. I can send your parents the video - and I bet they'll call you as soon as they see it."
Dyani Zitkala The bees immediately take flight again, flying off around the room now that they can see correctly again. Dyani tilts her head a little, "They know they can come," she says softly. "They will when they can. There is much work at home, the farm still has to be farmed... until they give it back to the Council."

One of the bees lands on the goggles for a moment, then flies over and lands on Hank's nose, and finally lifts off to fly back to Dyani. "Thank you Mister Hank, for your work and your time. We do not want to keep you from other things, so we will go with Clarice."
