Kara Danvers The spacious rooftop of the Titan's Tower not only serves as a nice place to take in the sun or the view, but an exceptional place for experimentation. Sure, there's the labs downstairs and advanced facilities beyond human imagination within the Fortress of Solitude but sometimes the open air is the thing. For all the problems she's solved with incredible strength and speed, Kara was born to be a scientist and that approach to problem solving is still the most rewarding in her mind.

Dressed in a new form of her Supergirl costume that features a whole bodysuit emblazoned with the House of El's emblem across the chest and a wind-buffeted red cape, she stands with a semi-translucent crystal in one hand. She holds it aloft, letting the sunlight catch it for a moment as she does. All the while she murmurs thoughtfully to herself in a language that, despite an almost Nordic lilt, sounds like nothing on Earth.
Bart Allen Bart Allen is coming by to check on things with the titans, as he nears the tower a glint catches his attention and for Bart it is a bit of an "Squirrel" moment, so instead of the front door, he runs up the side of the building up to the roof, to see whats going on. He sees Kara and a brow raises watching her study her rock.
Donna Troy     "Okay, what about the time Aqualad showed up with an octopus on his head? That's got to be right up there." The voices rise up from the stairway to the roof before Donna and Caitlin show up, but the context alas does not accompany them. It's probably one of those discussions of the old days, given that Aqualad is barely around any more, and when he is, he's called Tempest these days.

The door swings open and Donna steps out onto the roof, holding the door for Caitlin as she looks around to peer curiously at Kara. "/,kara, ehrosh :bem/" Donna calls out with a smile. "Those aren't the crystals we recovered from Zod's ship are they? Because you're not supposed to be experimenting with those without someone else present." Apparently Donna and Caitlin had spied what Kara was up to on the Tower security systems and had come to investigate. "Hey Impulse!" Donna adds with a wave. "How are you doing?"
Caitlin Fairchild "I'm still pretty sure he was pulling our chain on that one," Caitlin agrees with Donna. She's dressed in her comfortably casual way; calf-length grey leggings, a blue hoodie, and well-maintained athletic trainers. Her hair's pulled back into a single thick braid that hangs between her shoulderblades, a few loose wisps of hair framing her face. "I don't think it was any kind of Atlantean fashion statement."

She beams a smile at Kara and sluuuuurps on the straw that's jabbed into the protein shake in her left hand. Bart's flickering presence is always a surprise, but once she recognizes the fast-moving blur, she wiggles fingers in greeting to him as well. "Hey Bart. You coming to dinner Sunday night?"
Kara Danvers "Hello, Bart," Kara says to the speedster with no small amount of enthusiasm and sunshine in her voice, "You are just in time. Hold this, please."

The Kryptonian gives no further warning as she tosses what looks like a laptop that has been thoroughly gutted, butchered, and reinvented with all manner of strange equipment. It is open as she throws it, though she seems to have no concern for its safety when she does.

"/:bezhgamodh rrip!/" she calls to Donna in the same language, and it flows forth with greater fluidity than her English. She's polite enough to switch back to the more understood tongue soon after, though.

"No. This is a /muhnehl/ - a sunstone. They are normally used for building, but they have a sort of ... extradimensional sensitivity. They can pick up on signals the satellites and antennae up here cannot. Bart, please tell me if the raozrhynj makes a sound. Uh ... the computer, I mean."
Bart Allen Bart Allen will catch the laptop with pretty much ease. He turns it over looking it over, and examine it out of curiosity. He looks over and says "Hello ladies, and I think I can make it, if no missions come up or what not." He informs Caitlin. At the ladies speaking what he assumes is kryptonian, he mutters "Another reason I need a Legion flight ring."
Donna Troy     "I'm not saying it wasn't /on purpose/ Cait, just that..." Donna snaps her attention back to the present with a broad grin in Caitlin's direction before she returns her attention to Kara's crystral. "Ah yes, a sunstone... so that's basically what Zod's ship was constructed from before we messed around with it. Are you comparing it to the corrupted sample? Or trying to use it to tune into some kind of extra-dimensional signals?"

"Well, /Impulse/," Donna says, putting a stress on the codename for Caitlin's benefit, a milder version of shaking the codenames jar in her direction, "To be honest 'if no missions come up' is implied. Cait's used to Sunday dinners getting interrupted, it has happened often enough over the years. There was a time when villains in Metropolis were careful to avoid committing any major crimes on Sundays because the rumor got around that Caitlin punched twice as hard if you interrupted one of her meals."
Caitlin Fairchild Caitlin cranes her neck to look over Bart's shoulder at the readout on the laptop. She wrinkles her nose at Donna over the sidebar about cooking. "Hey, I spent all day slaving over the oven making that lasagna. No one likes cold Italian food. Can you blame me for being mad?"

Her eyes flicker over the readouts on the laptop screen. Caitlin's not a physicist, but she understands enough as an engineer to be able to make useful contributions. "What exactly are you looking for, Kar-- Supergirl?" Caitlin catches herself. "Or are you just experimenting for the fun of it?"
Kara Danvers "The latter," Kara explains, holding the sunstone high in the air before she begins to simply float as though she's not even aware she's doing it. A moment later she's ten feet in the air, gently drifting from side to side as though trying to catch some invisible beam of light within the facets of the crystal.

"There are ? others. Trapped. Some should not come back from the /vrrosh :dokhahsh/ but there are some who do not belong there. I thought I had picked up ... something. But I have not been able to find it since. Bart, is there anything on the screen?"

The screen of the laptop contains little more than a screed of geometric shaped symbols that might be recognizable as the Kryptonian alphabet. Despite the confusing mass of symbols, the feed almost seems calm.
Bart Allen Bart Allen will look at the screen seems calm, it has a squiggely Q, followed by an asterisk, with a tail, and and then two explanation marks, and a square with a thick right side, and extra line on it." He looks over to Caitlin and says "Italian can be good cold, midnight lasagna yumm."
Donna Troy     Donna nods her head, her expression sobering at Kara's explanation. "Alura," she says, though she's not in any hurry to explain who or what that is - that's something for Kara to share with others, if she choses to.

Donna joins Caitlin and Bart at studying the laptop screen; she can read Kryptonian moderately well by now, but she has no idea what she's actually looking for. "/vrrosh :dokhahsh/ translates as 'the dimension of unfriendly ghosts'", she explains to her fellow non-Kryptonians. "Superman calls it the Phantom Zone. It's an extra-dimensional space the Kryptonians in the past used to imprison dangerous villains. Kind of the Kryptonian equivalent of Tartarus, but that's a long story."

She tilts her head questioningly to Kara. "You're attempting to pick up a signal from within the phantom zone, then? Like... trying to get some cross-dimensional co-ordinates you can fix onto? Perhaps it would be easier to do this from within the Phantom Zone itself."
Caitlin Fairchild "Uh..." Caitlin trails off, looking to Bart, then Donna and Kara, then Donna again.

"Why is it we're looking for someone the Kryptonians imprisoned inside a super-scary-sounding extra-dimensional prison?" The question hangs in the air and the fingers of her free hand splay, plaintive.

"I've heard Superman mention the Phantom Zone once or twice, but never in a positive context. Wasn't that where he had Zod locked away? And then Zod got out? Zod and his goon squad of evil Kryptonians? I'm not sure it's a good idea to go poking around in a supermax jail so hard that it can keep even -Zod- under lock-and-key."
Kara Danvers "That is - " Supergirl begins, descending back to the ground again to peer over Bart's shoulder at the screen, "That is ... 'te' ... aaaaand ... 'vo'." She offers a friendly, encouraging smile before glancing back up at Donna and Caitlin.

"This is correct. Much easier. But Kal has predominantly negative experiences with our people. I do not think he would understand what I am doing. He is also very protective of Earth - and I am, too, of course - and may fear another Kryptonian being here. But ... it is as I said. He does not understand. I must find my own way into the Phantom Zone."

"Please do not think I am being reckless, Caitlin. This is very important."
Bart Allen Bart Allen hmms and says "Would it be better to do this somewhere away from other people, I mean like maybe on the moon, or mars or something? " He looks over to Donna, and says "Titans have space ships than can go to other planets right?" He remembers they are not as common in this time, but the titans were lost in space. "Or maybe call the talking racoon?"
Donna Troy     Donna nods her head in agreement with Kara. "Cait... SG has explained this to me already. This is kind of an Orpheus and Eurydike thing." She's not letting the Tartarus parallel go. "The point is that not everyone there is like Zod. Besides, Zod's already out."

"The T-Jet is capable of getting us around the solar system, but we don't have warp drives working quite yet," Donna replies to Bart with a nod. "So I'm not really sure it makes much difference. A Kryptonian can fly to Earth from Mars in a relatively short space of time. Some of them can break into hyperspace under their own power, so... yeah. Caution is wise, but I don't think that putting a few million miles between Earth and any potential Phantom Zone portals is going to make much difference.

Donna tilts her head thoughtfully to the side. "So, SG. You don't want to borrow any Phantom Zone projectors that might for example be in a hidden location that Superman likes to visit, I assume? But it would be easier to get a detection if you could access the Phantom Zone. Hmm. If you think you could modify one of our drones with some detection equipment so that it could theoretically be sent into the Phantom Zone and then retrieved to recover its readings, well..."

Donna glances briefly in Caitlin's direction before looking back to Kara. "I know magic doesn't exactly make you feel comfortable, but traversing dimensional boundaries is pretty much what Raven is all about. I'm confident she could send a drone into the Phantom Zone for you."
Caitlin Fairchild Caitlin's expression goes thoughtful at Donna's idea. "A probe could work," Caitlin mulls. "Depending on how Raven feels about it, we could hold a portal open and get live data flowing through it. Or I could load a scanner drone up with a bunch of active and passive sensor mechanisms, throw it through the portal, and retrieve it a minute or two later."

Her straw slurps and she sets the empty container aside to be taken downstairs and cleaned later. "I know you're being cautious, Kara, I really do," Caitlin assures the blonde. "I'm just wonderin what's so important about it all of a sudden. Can you at least tell us what you expect to find over there?"
Kara Danvers "Donna is correct, Bart. Opening the portal here would be better in a way ... the people best equipped to stop any aggressive Kryptonians are here already." She casts a glance into the distance, across the island of New Troy and the bridge that leads to the dark smudge of Gotham City on the distant horizon across the bay.

"But if I can track down the signal, this should not be an issue. We will need to open the portal eventually, but if it puts you at ease to avoid doing that for now then I can - "

Before Supergirl can finish talking, the laptop in Bart's hands begins to beep. Beeping and whirring, scrolling Kryptonian text across the screen. Text that indicates some sort of signal has been picked up, however faint it may be.
Bart Allen Bart Allen looks over and says "Ok, seems you found something. He holds it for Donna to read what ever it says and says "Well if you need any super speed help, I am here, course here of late, I think you might have speedsters coming out of your ears." He smiles a bit and says "And the Flash who taught Wally is back in action too." He knows Wally is open about his identity so using that name makes it less confusing.
Donna Troy     Donna nods her head slowly. "You're going to hate this suggestion even more, SG. I know how offended you were that we threatened Zod with Kryptonite, but if we're going to open a portal to the Phantom Zone... it might not be a bad idea having some around just in case, as a failsafe. That's your call, SG. But we can probably get our hands on some, and if the worst comes to the worst..."

Donna leans over to look at the screen again when it starts beeping. "So many speedsters, Impulse. Original Flash back? I hadn't heard that. We've got you, Wally and Irie here already, that's a pretty fearsome speedster collection as it is... hmm." Donna's forehead creases as she studies the text scrolling across the laptop screen. That's... /well/ above the background noise level, but I don't understand what these readings are actually indicating. SG, you should take a look at this."
Caitlin Fairchild Caitlin is staring at the symbols too, but the combination of alien language and unfamiliar physics is putting it above her head. She gets no more of it than Donna does.

"What about the Faraday cage in the lab?" she suggests. "It's got really good radiation shielding and a ton of safety measures installed. I'm pretty confident we could collapse any kind of dimensional bridge with a targeted lepton burst."
Kara Danvers "Tch," Kara clicks her tongue at the mention of Kryptonite, already recalling the feeling of her very flesh burning under the mercifully rare substance's sickly green glow. She doesn't offer much more in response, gently (though urgently) taking the computer from Bart to look at the readings.

"We may well need all the help we can get."

"The signal is faint, but it is here," she holds the screen, as though the others may be able to decipher them too, "It is ... her. The trinary signature is too similar for her to be anyone else."

A quick glance at Caitlin, a newfound intensity in her eyes: "Yes. Yes! Good! We need to get to work. We will need to construct a projector of our own. I have the schematics ... "
Bart Allen Bart Allen looks over amd says "You need it done quickly?" He asks and asks "Can I see the plans?" He will offer the tablet to Caitlin, and says "Electronics aint my specialty but I have studied some, like the treadmill, and some of the other gadgets." He looks to Donna, and says "And yea, I went an had lunch with him"
Donna Troy     "Think about it Kara," Donna says quietly. "I know you find it... offensive. But we have to think of the safety of everyone on this planet. And you have my word that we would take every precaution with it."

Donna focuses on the display, trying her best to interpret the strings of characters scrolling merrily along the screen. It's one thing being able to read Kryptonian characters, it's quite another making out what the characters are actually indicating. As far as Donna is concerned, trinary is a numerical base system and she doesn't really see how one can have a signature, but she's willing to take Kara's word on it. She rests a hand on Kara's shoulder and gives her friend a smile. "Well... that's exciting news! I'm surprised you got a hit that quickly. I still think we should go with a probe at first, just to make sure you are seeing what you think you're seeing. But if it really is good news, let's get this thing built and go get her out!"

Well neither Kara nor Donna seem to be answering Caitlin's request for specifics, but apparently 'Alura' is a 'her'.

"I think this is one we should leave to Cait, Vic and Kara," Donna tells Impulse with a grin. "Something like this, I think it's really important that the projector works /exactly/ right. This is one of those situations where precision is more important than speed. Yes, I know, you're a speedster, you do not believe anything can be more important than speed. It's part of your nature." Donna's grin widens and she gives Bart a wink.
Caitlin Fairchild "It's more particle physics than electronics," Caitlin tells Bart. She smiles at him with appreciation. "But it's good to know we've got you on hand if we need to make some changes and the computers can't keep up."

Her gaze returns to Kara and Donna and the smile fades into something wary. "You know I'll help you with whatever," Caitlin reminds Kara. "But I would like to know -what- I'm helping with. You're looking for someone in the Phantom Zone? Were they exiled there, or are they just trapped and you're their ride home?"
Kara Danvers There is a long pause as Kara considers Donna's words. Finally, she closes her eyes and nods once, not taking her eyes off the screen: "Okay. But I will get it for you. I ... know where to find some."

There's another thoughtful moment before she glances up at the other gathered Titans.

"Alright. A probe first. I have a lock on her trinary helix signature. The Phantom Zone is predominantly empty, so biological matter is suspended in the vacuum without decaying. Hair. Skin flakes. Saliva. Things like this get held in the air like motes of dust. These belong to her; I have no doubt about it. But as you say, it is best to be sure."

After another long moment she takes a deep breath, lowering her head and looking at the sunstone in her hand. Finally, she speaks again, making eye contact with Caitlin as she does.

"We are going to rescue Alura. My ... mother."
